...Soldiers who took part in the Vietnam War experienced that the conflict divided The United States of America. There were two groups, those who went to Vietnam and those who didn’t. It all depended on social class, many men who travelled to Vietnam to fight were the majority of working-class America. Their average age was less than twenty and most of them didn’t even graduate. These young men were not soldiers, but ordinary people. Because they were less privileged than the educated kids, they fought and died in Vietnam, opposite the well educated. For many stationed the war was without any purpose; “ There were no dramatic pushes to the Rhine, no larger missions, nothing to feel a part of” – William Broyles, Veteran from the Vietnam War. Broyles describe how the war seemed meaningless for the soldiers, how 365 days passed with a lot of suffering and lost, how you were leaving when your days were up, but the war went on. The frustrated feeling of powerlessness when new soldiers arrived and were forced to go through the same destructive experience. In this living hell the only thing the soldiers could count on was each other. The Vietnam combat veterans drew this lesson “You are alone, no one else shares your experience or cares about it – no one except your ‘buddies’. Only they matter”. These men’s identities were taking from them when they joined the army, they were putted in a uniform, ordered to remove their hair and many stationed were given new names. Therefore they developed...

... The Vietnam War really tested the emotions of the soldiers who deployed there. “The Things They Carried” explained from the physical items carried to the emotional burdens of soldiers fighting in Vietnam. Tim O’Brien, the author had also served time over in Vietnam. This story gives the reader a good understanding of the daily things that can occur. Even if it is abrupt and traumatic, the soldiers have to carry on to continue their mission. Tim O’Brien really writes with a simple style. The sentences themselves were not very long, but more so to the point. He had explained things in detail, but it was not overly done. I thought the style of writing went well with the soldiers mindsets of the checklist of events that go along with their lives over there. From getting one thing done to another, as simple as it is, the sentences complimented the events that played a long. The word choices were with good vocabulary, and they didn’t require anything higher than a high school education. He used several military abbreviations that one outside of the military may not understand (example: PFC stands for Private First Class). The tone of the story is sadness. Realizing the events that happen over in a war zone can be really sad. It is a shock to read about a man, an American Soldier just fall down and die. There was also emotional shock with some of the soldiers who had to just shrug it off, and even the shock of realizing that some of their mindsets were not in Vietnam. “One things...

...The Black Wall The Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., is a memorial to the dead and missing men and women who served in the Vietnam War in the late 1960’s and mid 1970’s. This war was hated by a majority of Americans and the returning soldiers bore a lot of the people’s bitter anger. Their memorial is a triumph of the veteran’s tribute to their fallen fellow soldier. Jan Scruggs served in this war and often had nightmares of the death of his comrades. He finally decided to build a memorial for them, listing all the names of those killed and missing. But how to get the necessary funds? And who would design it? Finally, why would Americans want to build a memorial anyway? Jan went ahead. He gave speeches, held meetings and...

...Is it possible for someone to be a coward if they simply stand up for what they believe in? Is it possible that the person calling another a “coward” is cowardice themselves? Yes, this is very possible. The Vietnam War was a long, hard, and conflicting war for not only Vietnam, but the entire world. American men began getting drafted around the 1970’s, but roughly 300,000 men resisted the draft. The term resisted is extremely different from dodged. The men who fled America were draft resistors, not draft dodgers. The novel The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien is a collection of stories about American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War. The narrator, Tim O’Brien, was in a platoon of soldiers based in Vietnam and survived through the war....

...giving the narrator his own name and naming the rest of his characters after the men he actually fought alongside in the Vietnam War, O’Brien blurs the distinction between fact and fiction. The reality is that Tim O’Brien is a real person and he is the author of The Things They Carried. O’ Brien did actually serve in the Vietnam War as a soldier. Unfortunately, it is impossible to know whether or not any given event in the stories truly happened to O’Brien. Through writing about his experiences in Vietnam, O’Brien’s character is able to sort through his emotions, since “by telling stories, you objectify your own experience. You separate it from yourself. You pin down the certain truths” (152). He doesn’t look upon his stories as a type of therapy; he recounts his stories since they are a part of his past, and who he is now is the direct result of them. O’Brien tries to explain the distinction of truth through “How to Tell a True War Story.” The narrator will introduce a character and undercut what he has previously lead the reader to believe, like in Norman Bowker’s suicide. A true war story is distinguishable “by the way it never seems to end. Not then, not ever” (72). In the case of O’Brien, his comments remind the reader that his stories are created. For example, before he starts talking about a gruesome story of the killing of a water buffalo, O’Brien writes, “This one does it for me. I’ve told it before—many times, many versions—but here’s what actually happened” (74). O’Brien...
