Timeline

Well we have to think again. Because you can never judge the the taste of the cake by just looking at the frosting on top. Norman Spencer (Harrison Ford) a high statused scientific researcher...

Ice Break

...Ice break by Astrid Blodgett At some point in your life you will have to make really hard choices and decisions, whether you like it or not. You cannot avoid being hurt, or being exposed to a life changing moment. Maybe you will even experience a situation when you are in a state between life and death. Not all people handle those kinds of things the same, it will not have the same effect on children because they might not understand the consequences. To be a child can be hard sometimes, but will it also be hard if you are in a good environment with a loving and caring family around you? In the shorty story “Ice Break” by Astrid Blodgett, we meet Dawn and her two sisters. We hear about Dawn, who goes ice fishing with her father and younger sister Janie like many times before. Their mother does not go because of the bad season for ice fishing. “After she and Aunt Helen had told Dad and Uncle Rick it was late in the season and the ice was rotten.” (L. 170) When they are out on the lake to look for their Uncle Rick, when the ice breaks. The truck goes right into the cold water and the father tries to help both of his daughters out of the truck. Only Dawn makes it out in time The text is written in a very untraditional way. Astrid Blodgett continuously switches between Dawns story about the accident on the lake, which is a flashback, and Dawns point of view on the atmosphere in the house, where she speaks her sister into coming to the lake with them. So we can divide the...

...Guanyin’s stillness as a whole shows concentration and deep thought. Elegance is what I saw with detailing in the goddesses’ crown. Looking more closely at Guanyin her clothing is loose fitted showing a sign of comfort as the robe drapes off the sides of her feet. Guanyin is wearing no shoes making her more like the common person and easier to understand. The posture of her hands and body gives a sign of meditation and gave me a feeling of harmony. Guanyin sits promptly on the lotus throne rising from mud. Extravagant designs of 3-D petals that surround the lotus flower in every direction you look at. The lotus flower evokes a sense of smell by giving an essence of being in a garden enriched with flowers. Standing in front of the lotus flower gives imaginary thoughts of being in a garden filled with flourishing flowers in every direction. Elements that forcefully grab my attention are the lotus flower. The whole base of the sculpture lies on the lotus flower. The petals are all symmetrical from one another, reflecting off each other, and giving an extravagant touch to detail. Guanyin is in deep thought while having the comfort of self-awareness sitting on the lotus flower. Times during my life when I felt stressed from certain situations I had...

Why Are the Philippines Considered to Be a Disaster Hotspot?

...June there was a second eruption and a dome on the side of the volcano collapsed causing a pyroclastic blast – a dense cloud of lava with bursting gas bubbles. 350 people died and others died in camps due to being exposed to disease whilst 80 000 hectares of farmland were buried underneath the ash. There was a huge economic loss of $ 710 million mainly due to agricultural and property damage. The Philippines is mainly considered a disaster hotspot due to the fact is lies across a major plate boundary, the Philippine and Eurasian, causing a frequent amount of volcanoes and earthquakes. The Eurasian plate is forced beneath the Philippine and these series of ‘jerks’ are what cause earthquakes. This is known as a destructive plate boundary because one plate is destroyed underneath another. 80% of the worlds volcanoes occur along destructive plate boundaries. Its northern and eastern coasts also face the Pacific Ocean which is the most tsunami prone which is highly affected as the Philippines lies...

Reader Response: the Lottery

...Reader Response #2: The Lottery “The Lottery” is a short story written by Shirley Jackson and published in 1948. The title of the story initially leads readers to believe the story is going to be about someone winning some kind of prize. Even the opening of the story seems to protest any foul play or cruel behavior. What the reader is introduced to is a seemingly friendly gathering of a small village community, members all gathered around anxiously awaiting their drawing for the lottery. The village members all chatter amongst one another in a tone that kind neighbors would take with one another. To the surprise of the reader, the story provides a shocking twist. The story is not about someone winning a prize. Instead the story reveals that the lottery is a barbaric and inhumane practice in which the person who is drawn is subsequently stoned to death by the member of the community. Upon first reading the story, I sat there shocked staring at the book, not fathoming what I had read. I ended up going back to the beginning and reading it again. It was after my second time reading the story that the dark, yet brilliant mind of the author finally mesmerized me. From what I gather, Jackson was obviously trying to portray humanity’s ability to be cruel toward their fellow man. The author also pointed out that we are drawn toward such graphic dramatizations because of the pointless inhumanity and violence that we are so inexplicably capable of. Although we do not go around stoning member...

The Great Gatsby Quest for Monetary Prize

...Gatsby’s Archetypal Quest for Daisy, the Monetary Prize In The Great Gatsby, the characterizations of Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby, particularly in the flashback of when they first met in Chapter VIII, expose the absence of love that lies beneath the glitz and glamour of wealthy living. When seen through an archetypal lens, Gatsby’s pursuit of Daisy can be seen as an Archetypal quest where the “golden girl” is a treasure, rather than a love interest (Fitzgerald, 120) (Delahoyde, 1). To Jay Gatsby, Daisy is materialistically the ultimate peak of wealth to be obtained, a metaphor best illustrated in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s choice of descriptive words that portray her in the same way that money might be defined. Daisy is a princess “high in a white palace the king’s daughter”, beautiful and comfortably assured a life of ease due to her wealthy place in society (Fitzgerald, 120). In this novel she is more a material, a monetary symbol, than a person, and this best proved in Chapter VIII (Delahoyde, 1). In a flashback of Gatsby’s to when he first knew and loved Daisy, his descriptions paint a picture of her “gleaming like silver, safe and proud above the hot struggles of the poor” (Fitzgerald, 150). In this glowing portrayal that showcases Daisy’s beauty and power, (both things that she was born with, that she did not earn) her appearance and social class is all that is focused on, she is merely an outward image. From the point of view of a man that supposedly loves her, there...

...cart derailing at any moment before the end of the track surging within me. How will our first days go? What problems will we face in the months to come? Will these unforeseen roadblocks be an obstacle in our path? But as they say, not all days are rainy days and thus our story begins. It’s day one here on the dusty cold red planet. After a long and cold three months trip in the sleeping chambers to Mars, we felt relieved to be on solid grounds. The search team is in search for a stable sector for us to occupy and as the leave no stone unturned, we glanced into the horizon and absorbed the strange beauty that lies before us. Walking about the planet, we find that gravity seems to favor us. Giving us a bit of a hassle but also making us feel like super humans in our space suits. We feel strange in this new world, like aliens invading foreign lands. The search team has found a sector, not far from our landing zone and soon we are on the move, moving like the breeze, swift and calmly. Night time approaches and time has seemed to pass us by. The camp site is all set up and securities are on patrol around the parameters. Who knew what dangers lurked within the darkness of the night. Six months down the road, so far everything seems fine. Our excavating machinery and hydro generators or as we call it here “The Rain Makers” had arrived three months ago. We are now located beneath the surface of the red planet, away from the intensity of the sun. Gravity is still taking some time to...

How Far Has the Eruption of Mount Pinatubo Helped Eliminate All Risks from Future Eruptions?

...How far has the eruption of Mount Pinatubo helped eliminate all risks from future eruptions? In many countries, eruptions have caused great loss of life, displaced large numbers of people and wildlife, induced short-term climate perturbations, and affected worldwide investments and international relations. Hazardous volcanic activity will continue to occur, and the threat to lives and property is increasing with the growth in population and development near volcanoes, and the increase in national and international air traffic over volcanic regions. However with the help of volcanologists and the profound use of technology it enables us to predict future eruptions which mimimises all damages. Mount Pinatubo is an example of an eruption which had been predicted and prepared for and thus helped eliminate some problems from developing and has helped other countires cope and prepare for forthcoming eruptions. Volcanic eruptions create hazardous conditions, which severely affect people and human infrastructure, near the volcano, in downstream valleys, and thousands of miles away. Evacuation of the population at risk had been the concern of local authorities as early as April 1991 when the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) declared a 6-mile-radius danger zone around the volcano. PHIVOLCS, jointly with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), had conducted intensive studies and monitoring of the volcano’s activity from which it forecast and declared an imminent...

Social Stereotypes

..."It is not what you look at that matters, but what you see." Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Ever since we were old enough to comprehend the complexities of human conversations, a lot of things have been etched into our clay minds. One such universal phrase that is taught and imbibed more than anything else is the idea of ‘not judging a book by its cover’. Although they have merits, many idioms become obsolete until applied to everyday life. More often than not, our perspective on and of things is curtained by social stereotype and this, as a result, shapes and molds our outlook in life. For instance, whilst it’s raining, a person may look at the mud, the dirt, and the drenched car covers and condemn the notion of the heavenly downpour...

Earth Science

...[Type the company name] | Written Assignment 3 | Earth Science | | | | | Written Assignment 3 1. Describe the bathymetry of the ocean seafloor and how the features relate to plate tectonics. The term “bathymetry” originally referred to the ocean’s depth relative to sea level, although it has come to mean “submarine topography,” or the depths and shapes of underwater terrain. In the same way that topographic maps represent the three-dimensional features of overland terrain, bathymetric maps illustrate the land that lies underwater. The ocean has mountain ranges, volcanoes, trenches, canyons, and other structures. The oldest rocks on the ocean floor are 180 million years old. This is young compared with the oldest continental rocks, which date from 3.8 billion years ago. While the continental crust has been steadily accumulating throughout Earth’s history, it seems the oceanic crust is created and destroyed rather quickly. It is created at the mid-ocean ridges from hot material rising in the mantle, and then spreads away from the ridges, before eventually being recycled into the mantle at subduction zones. Continental crust is always less dense and more buoyant than oceanic crust, so where they meet, it is the oceanic crust that gives way, sinking (subducting) back into the mantle The boundaries of a tectonic plate may be divergent, convergent, or transform. At divergent boundaries, the crust is extended, thinned, and fractured by the upwelling...

Plate Tectonics and the Pacific Northwest

...broken down into over a dozen different sized pieces of solid rock. The theory of plate tectonics was first discovered by Alfred Wegener in the 20th century. Wegener figured out that all of the continents seemed to have similar edges leading him to believe that the continents were once all connected. He called this a supercontinent and named it Pangaea. He believed that the continents of Pangaea started drifting apart about 300 million years ago and was later known as Continental Drift. ("Geography.about.com", 2016). The Pacific Northwest has a lot of tectonic activity causing many earthquakes. The three tectonic plates that influence these earthquakes are The North America, Juan De Fuca, and the Pacific plate. These three plates make up what is called the Cascadia Strain. The most common damaging earthquakes in Washington and Oregon are deep earthquakes from Juan De Fuca. These earthquakes occur when Juan De Fuca starts to bend and plunge underneath North America. Stresses cause faults in the down going crustal part of the plate causing it to rupture. The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a plate boundary that stretches from Vancouver Island to northern California. Cascadia’s deepest earthquakes are about 100km deep but many subduction zones have earthquakes extending to 600km deep. Cascadia has averaged an earthquake every 243 years over the last 10,000 years. There have been 41 monster quakes along the Cascadia Subduction Zone in that period. The last one was 314 years ago....

Online Classes, Beneficial?

...College online does not equal or surpass the educational value of a traditional campus learning experience. With a full time college schedule, doing 13.5 credit hours per semester is considered to be another full time job. Most people assume to just do this in their spare time. They assume to be able to still manage a family and have a job. Students have to have a huge amount of time management skills. “As with most things, if you don't manage your time properly, you will find yourself buried beneath a seeming insurmountable mountain of coursework.” (montgomery college, 2013) With a traditional college, there is an instructor explaining things and teaching. This allows for there to be questions at the point of not understanding. With online classes, there is no direct instruction besides the reading of the text. There are also no direct questions available. You have to type an email explaining your question and hope that the instructor understands what you are talking about and where your concern lies. “Research has shown over and over again that community college students who enroll in online courses are significantly more likely to fail” (NY Times, 2013). With online classes, it is way easier to get behind and even harder to gain the ground back again. They can take more time than normal classes usually do. This I believe is because you have to prove your knowledge with assignments versus actually being able to interact with an instructor face to face. References montgomery college...
