...Learning Style: The Key to Success Desiree Little Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V March 3, 2014 Learning Style: The Key to Success What if one could find out his or hers way of learning? It’s possible by taking the VARK® (2011) assessment. Knowing ones learning style can help learners understand the presented information in a way that is easier for them. VARK is an acronym for visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic (VARK®, 2011). Knowing ones learning style can be the key to a successful learning experience. Read/Write The read/write learning style means that he or she prefers to learn by reading directions or material and by writing things down, such as note-taking. In my case, this is the style that the VARK® assessment identified me as. Read/write learners enjoy reading, often take excessive and verbatim notes, work best in quiet areas, prefer to work alone, won’t hesitate to look up a word in a dictionary, and love articulate teachers who put a lot of information into sentences and notes (The Study Gurus, 2013). The read/write learner is fairly common and may be missed as they’ll be in a corner writing notes! Preferred Learning Strategies Preferred learning strategies are ways that a learner likes their information presented to them. My preferred learning strategies are the following: * * Reading handouts * Reviewing lists * Taking notes * Re-writing notes * Listening to lecture * Using tape recorder The above strategies...

...with Learning Tactically March 8, 2015 Academic and Career Success Professor Richard Lorgus CTU Online When I was a child about the age of 9, I experienced my first lesson on electricity: electrocution. I had an old television, something that looked like it was from the 70’s that was sitting in my room but belonged to my grandfather. I decided to see if it works, not knowing what curiosity had in store for me, and something instantly ticked in my mind to plug it up. Upon inspection of the power cord, I discovered there wasn’t an adapter on the end, just bare wire. Like the unsuspecting child I was, I divided the cables and attempted to stuff them into the wall outlet and the next thing you know. Pop goes the socket! My mother and stepfather at the time heard the pop and rushed to my room, opened my door, and smelled the charred stench, and saw the black mark in the middle of my forehead from the electricity. That was my first tactical experience with electricity, and it paved the way for my curiosity today. Not everyone has the same experiences, but some are more connected than others. We have those that learn through sound whom are known as auditory learners. Also, those that learn by sight are visual learners. Lastly, you have those that would rather get their hands dirty, the tactile learners. I fit right in the tactile learner range since I prefer to do and learn as I go something of being efficient and getting more done in time. What’s your learning style? Assessment...

...HRDQ Research and Development Team You may be in charge of an entire organization, or you may oversee the work of one or two other people. You may be CEO, VP, district manager, director, supervisor, foreman, or coordinator. No matter what role you fill at work, one thing is true: If you need to influence others to work toward organizational goals, then you are a leader. We all have our own way of leading. What’s My Leadership Style? will provide you with some insight into your way of leading others — the first step in learning to lead effectively. Directions Think of a situation in which you needed to get others to work toward a goal. Now picture yourself in action. What do you see yourself doing to influence others to get the job done? Most likely, you influence others in a variety of ways. But some of the actions you take to influence people are more characteristic of you than others. On the Response Form, you will find 20 pairs of characteristic leadership actions. For each pair, assign a total of 5 points by dividing the points between both actions. The numbers you assign each action should capture the degree to which you tend to use a particular action when getting others to work toward a goal. Use any combination that adds up to 5 points (5-0; 4-1; 3-2), but do not use fractions. Example: a. 0 Offer support 5 Assume control b. 1 Offer support 4 Assume control c. 2 Offer support 3 Assume control © 2001 Organization...

...Metacognition, otherwise known as "thinking about thinking". During this lab assignment, we watched a couple of videos on YouTube and took a short learning styles assessment on Educationplanner.org. Through this, I quickly understood the concepts associated with metacognition as it pertains to psychology. In this essay, I will discuss metacognition in depth, as well my previous scores from earlier in the year, my newest scores as of July 2014 and how I apply metacognitive techniques in my own life. Metacognition is thinking about learning whilst consciously or even subconsciously controlling the learning process in your brain. Per Vanderbilt.edu, metacognition also "refers to the processes used to plan, monitor, and assess one's understanding and performance". This can be a difficult concept to grasp for some, but when broken down, it all becomes very simple. Ask yourself this: "How do you think"? For example, you're on a road trip and are close to your destination but are a little lost getting to a hotel. You stop and ask for directions. Would you personally benefit more from writing the directions down, listening to a GPS for street names or looking for certain landmarks? The fact that you are even thinking about how you should go about learning and remembering the directions is a metacognitive technique. I took the learning styles assessment on Educationplanner.org again and although it was informative, it only reiterated what I already knew about myself. My first batch...

...MI Inventory Paper PSYCH 538 MI Inventory Paper Kathiann Kowalski (2001) contends, “When it comes to describing people's learning styles, one thing is clear: Because everybody's brain is different, learning styles vary widely” (para.4). Learning styles are an important aspect to individual learning. The ability to recognize personal learning styles and identify strengths and weaknesses enables individuals to reach optimal success. Optimizing personal learning style leaves room for improvement. Learning styles vary and not everyone learns the same way. It is beneficial to evaluate learning styles in order to be productive in any learning or work environment. In 1983, Dr. Howard Gardner, a professor of neuroscience and psychologist at Harvard University developed the theory of Multiple Intelligences. Individuals have various make-ups, and according to Dr. Gardner each is a unique combination. Dr. Howard Gardner’s theory suggests that there are nine different intelligences. For Gardner, intelligence is: • the ability to create an effective product or offer a service that is valued in a culture; • a set of skills that make it possible for a person to solve problems in life; • the potential for finding or creating solutions for problems, which involves gathering new knowledge. According to the Multiple Intelligence Inventory the results that were strongly identified were Intrapersonal, Logical, and Verbal. Intrapersonal Intelligence...

...What Is Your Learning Style? What is a learning style? A learning style is the way an individuals learns. To understand a learning style, consider tasks you have learned to do well, and then consider other tasks that tend to be difficult for you. Everyone has a variety of learning styles, which is their unique approach to learning. To find out what learning styles you possess, take the “Learning-Style Questionnaire.” When I took the questionnaire, it identified different aspects of my learning styles, how I approached the processing and taking in of information and gave me a better insight into myself overall. The majority of the results from the questionnaire were refreshingly accurate. I related to the results not only in a classroom environment, but also as a lifestyle barometer following me throughout my daily interactions. The portions of the questionnaire that did not accurately describe me were based on different settings interacting with completely different mediums and under different circumstances. I agree with the spatial learner aspect of the results. I experience it first hand when I feel the need to buy construction paper, scissors, glue and markers to create tangible objects driving home the workings of networking devices. Or, I realize my propensity as a visual learner, when I go to the video library or attend workshops on the step by step process of how to create culinary dishes. In part five of the questionnaire, I disagree with my low creative score...

...7 Simple Ways to Clear Your Mind Do you ever feel like your brain is tied in knots? Do your thoughts resemble a massive ball of string, wound messily and tightly together? Are you unsure of what to do next? This feeling is all too common in a world of sensory overload and multiple responsibilities. The ultra busy person sometimes feels like thoughts don’t even get a chance to fully form. At times of high stress, where we are trying to satisfy multiple demands at once, it feels like our minds are being constricted with warring priorities. Let’s talk about some ways to untangle, unwind, and refocus. Here are seven simple tips to clear your mind and get your mental house in order. You can try any one of them, several or even all of them. They are listed here in no particular order: 1. Write madly to get some mental breathing room. Writing is a proven way to help organize your thoughts. Morning pages, as popularized by *Julia Cameron* in The Artist’s Way, are a way to adopt the habit of clearing your mind on paper. Three handwritten pages, done daily, can clear out your conscious thoughts and bring unconscious clutter to the surface. Some people write memoirs as a more in-depth way to clear their consciences, but we’re not trying to do that here. We’re just trying to open up some space for your thoughts to breathe. If you don’t have the time to devote to writing regular morning pages, consider a speedier approach. Try writing as quickly as possible with whatever time you have....

...having diversity in a collaborative learning environment? I feel the advantages of having diversity in a collaborative learning environment is interesting because everyone doesn’t have the same ideas so it would be good to incorporate others ideas and put them together. When working in a team is can be fun because many people come from different walks of life and also they are taught to learn and process information different. With that being stated, I feel that it is an advantage to work with diversity because everyone’s ideas are important and can be utilized. Many people have many different talents and have been brought up in different backgrounds which can make the most innovative people come together as one. How might factors such as diversity, attitude, learning, and work styles affect collaboration? Factors such diversity, attitude, learning, and work styles affect collaboration in both positive and negative ways. The positive way with diversity can affect collaboration is we share them and learn from each other. The negative trait would be we all have different understandings of different things and posts can be easily miscalculated especially via computer. Attitude can also affect collaboration because each person has different views and will see things in a different. A positive or negative attitude will affect a person’s performance and learning ability. Learning, everyone has different strengths and learning styles, when brought together it can make...
