...Cynthia Draper EDU210 May 8, 2015 Katy Sell Observing Kids in Singing Time at Church I live in a small community of approx. 2000 people. There are not a lot of places that the kids congregate. The places they congregate are usually sporting activities. However, the sport season is over so there really wasn’t many places to observe. So I observed elementary kids at church in their combined singing and lesson activity. These kids were from the ages of 3 to 12. They were playing a game where the teacher would hide a clothes pin while a child was hiding right outside the room. As the child entered the room the rest of the kids would start singing. They would get louder as he/she got closer to the clothespin until they found it. It was very interesting to see how the kids reacted. Some of them had a really hard time resisting in telling them where the clothespin is. Some of them would just giggle and make fun of the child. It was all in good fun and there was no malicious intent on anyone. When the clothespin was found the child got to pick another child to go outside and find it while he/she hid it. As soon as the pin was found the children started raising their hands and shouting “pick me!” They even would stand up as tall as they could so that they would be noticed. The teacher kept reminding them that they had to sit down and only the quietest would be picked. However, that generally did not happen. They usually picked a best friend or a sibling. ...

...Plano Texas. By doing that, it made me realize that I wanted to pursue in teaching. But what was I going to do after senior year? Stay in Dallas so I could still work at my synagogue or venture out and see what else there was out there that could hopefully teach me new things and help me learn new things while in a classroom. I knew that if I wanted to pursue in teaching I needed to go out and learn new things in different communities. Growing up in Dallas Texas I was not in a diverse community. I went to a private Jewish day school from the age of 2 to 18. It was all I knew of because that was where I grew up. But when it came time to apply to college I decided to broaden my choices and go far away from home. I decided in the end that I did not want to leave my family because they were who took care of me. They were who helped me grow up to be who I am. So Boston was where I decided to go. Here I have my brother, grandmother, uncle, aunt, and three little cousins. So Boston is my home away from home. But what was I going to become a part of. Back home I knew what I was doing. I had a job that lasted 4 years, but what now? I wanted to make the most out of my time at Simmons but I did not know how. As a freshman in a new atmosphere I did not know whom to ask about what to get involved in so that I would get more experience with kids. As I stepped foot in my Simmons 101 class I did not know what to expect. One of the first things that my teacher told me was that there was going...

...After School Programs Helping Kids Succeed 1,565 Words Parents now-a-days spend a lot of time working, and when they’re kids get out of school they have nowhere to go but an empty, unsupervised house. A lot of the time when kids are left alone for a long period of time, they tend to get in some trouble; whether it’s with their friends outside of the house, or alone at home. Many parents may not have the time or money to send their kids to a day care program, so they can’t really do anything about it. But many schools have the choice whether or not to have after school programs but decide not to because they don’t want to keep their school open after hours. It isn’t just the school’s decision though; it also depends on whether the school has the money to keep them open or not. According to USA Today: “Tight local budgets and reduced federal funding for police, along with new anti-terrorism duties, have stretched police departments and led to cuts in community programs for youths.” All kids need a safe place to be after school, even if it’s for study hall or a quiet place where they could do their homework. After school programs can help children a lot and in many ways. They have an impact on kids because it gives them something to do and it provides them with positive role models. Some of the ways that after school programs can help children is by giving them a safe and supportive learning environment after school, opportunities to experience new activities in arts, culture...

...Childhood Should Be The Happiest Period In Our Life As kids, we tend lo learn what we see and hear. If kids see their older siblings doing something, regardless if it is bad or not, they will learn it and do the same things. Kids should be given a good education because our future depends on them. You gain what you give, and if you give your kid a good education and treat them well you will receive good result from them. The hard times that kids have in their childhood affect their character and their future as they grow up because sometimes they demonstrate the same towards their kids, live a very unhappy life, and can create hate towards those who are involved in them having hard times. Kids are just little people trying to learn their way towards what life is, and the process through their learning should be the best period of their lives. Fifth Initially, depending on the environment that you lived in, that is what you show in the future. Probably you live with parents who all they do is fight and they get you involved by also fighting with you or even punishing you, and not letting you go out or play. In some cases people like that, when they have their family they give all their loves to their kids and partner, but they could as well develop the same habits towards their kids and fight all the time with other couples. Hard Times, by Ron Rash, is a story about a hen’s eggs being stolen. Jacob was trying to find out who was taking them. They thought it was an animal or...

...SHORT STORY IFRAH ALI ERP: 09539 CLASS: 3111 The kids insisted on playing hide and seek while Peter didn’t want to since one of the kids had broken their legs while playing hide and seek last time. In the end on a lot of insisting by the kids Peter agreed but warned them not to do anything mischievous since the kids are very naughty and always end up doing some kind of prank. However, Peter began. “Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One” Hide and go seek was the order of the evening. The non-stop rain with no signs of stopping meant mud, mud and more mud. Peter already knew where the kids were. They always hid in the same place together just like twins stick together. “Where could they be?” he said talking to herself. She tip toed down the stairs and peeked into their room “Goodness, I will never find them!” “Maybe here they are” shouted Peter trying to increase curiosity. “Err… guess not” he murmured searching behind the bed, the curtains, and the washroom. “Where on earth have they gone?” He went downstairs hoping to find some clue or maybe a sign where the kids have hidden. “They’re not here even” he murmured. “John! Beth! Come on outside enough of the game, it’s time for dinner now”. “I am not playing anymore.” A minute passed and the panic set in. Peter was now petrified. He had no clue where to find them. He went downstairs fussing and murmuring “Where could they be? They never do this, how can they do this with me?” As he went downstairs...

...I have seen special needs kids out casted from society by other students. Despite the fact that they are just human beings like us no one dares to treat them equally or pay some attention to them. In 2012, three girls started Opportunity Smiles at Manvel High School. I did not know what the club was about but the name of the club attracted me to it so I made the choice to go and take a look. When I first entered the room I was greeted by very friendly people; however, they were different in a special way. Throughout the meeting I learned Opportunity Smiles...

...against fast food advertising in school campuses. “Our classroom should be healthy places where kids are not bombarded with ads for junk food”, where her exact words in the white house. School should be a place where kids study and interact with healthy and educational material and not a marketing place for junk food companies. “If you can’t sell it, you ought not to be able to market it”, said U.S. Agricultural Secretary Tom Vilsack. Vilsack mentions as well that there are hundreds of millions of dollars spend a year in just marketing foods and drinks to kids in school. I strongly believe that all this should be banned since advertising persuades kids to buy more junk food and that is unhealthy for kids especially since kids spend forty hours in school a week. Mrs. Obama does right in proposing that junk food advertising should be banned from school, as I grew up most kids around me in school were not overweight but this was in the early 2000’s. However now things are very different, as I drive by school I see many kids who are eagerly eating unhealthy food such as chips and the bad thing is as they’re coming out of school, most of these children seem overweight. ...due to the lack of positive outlets. They are all trying to discover who they are, what interests them, who to hang around with, and just discover life. But an issue people debate about is the actions of the bored and unsupervised children. Kids often hangout in groups at a variety of locations, such as houses, parks, and the mall, while to them it may not seem harmful in being out and about with friends, adults may think otherwise. Some parents may be worried where there kids are or what they're doing, other parents may just say, "let them be kids", and others may just be completely against kids being out in groups doing whatever they do. A possible solution would be to build a recreational center to make a difference for all kids within the community. Today our youth have factors that can give them a high risk of abusing drugs, alcohol, or even tobacco. These factors are the amount of money they have, stress at home and school, and boredom. A recreational center could easily help reduce or eliminate these factors. There could be snacks and drinks that kids could purchase. The activities and people will engage the kids to be more on a more positive setting. Aside from just having social activities to do, there could also be different sports teams that actually compete, tutor sessions, craft classes, trips, special events, and health programs. A recreational center would keep the youth occupied and away from the bad influences of the world, as well as give...

...goal is to determine what a child has learned, what the individual already know and how much more the child is prepared to learn by assessing the child. The purpose of assessment is used for an assortment of reasons “it helps the teacher to keeping track of learning, diagnosing reading and writing difficulties, determining eligibility for programs, evaluating programs, evaluating teaching, and reporting to others. Underlying all these purposes is a basic concern for improving teaching and learning. In the United States it is common to use testing for accountability, but the ultimate goal remains the improvement of teaching and learning. (IRA, n.d.) I know that it is the teacher’s responsibility to test her students so that she understands where each individual stand so I am able to determine placement for the child. My plan for including assessments when I am working with children is so that I am able to assess the whole child instead of bits and pieces of difficult areas that the child might have. If you look at the child as a whole then you are able to understand every need of the individual him/herself. One way that I can use assessment to document children’s work is through using the portfolio; “The portfolio is a record of the child's process of learning: what the child has learned and how she has...

...my wildest dreams would I have even begun to imagine that community service could be such a rewarding experience. As the oldest child I never had the opportunity of having someone that could help me with my homework, play with me and help me when I needed something. My parents once in a while could help me with homework, but once we moved to the United States I was definitely on my own considering my parents didn’t know enough English to help me. From this moment forward, I can say I’m very proud of myself for being where I am now without any help throughout my school years. Yet, I know I could have done better with the help of someone. I figured with the opportunity to do community service, I could take advantage of this situation and choose something that would help kids with whatever they needed and maybe even play with them if I had the chance. Looking through the long list of places to do community service, the YMCA Child Care Center caught my attention. I knew this was going to be a great choice but I didn’t think it could make such an impact in my life. This child care is an educational and fun place for kids after school to stay at while their parents get off of work. They have a certain schedule where they eat snacks, do their homework, go to a Sumba class, play outside and other activities. I had the pleasure of meeting a group of wonderful little kids. Within the first week of me being there as soon as they walked in they would...

...of children are spending less and less time outside than generations before them. Parents should not have to tell their kids to go outside. Kids should want to go outside. Sadly, in this day and age, indoor activities take precedence over playing outside. With developments in technology, many people (not just kids) only spend time outside getting in and out of their car. People are becoming more and more inactive and this could be from a habit of not being outside enough. The majority of human history has taken place outside. It is where wars are fought, children play, new discoveries...

Seeing that little kid out there looking for stuff is sad to see because I think it’s not right for a little kid to be living in those type of conditions. The houses are pretty much made out of recycled stuff that we never used and threw it out. These houses can also be stacked on top of each other which is really dangerous cause anytime that little piece of medal or whatever its made out of can break and all that stuff would fall people on the top would fall and hit the get injured or may even die. It is also for the people on the bottom all that garbage would land on top of them and kill them instantly if not die they would get really injured. I also see a lot of African American’s who live like this there is about 65% African American’s who live in these dangerous conditions....

...HOW TO PREVENT LOOSING OUR YOUTH TO GANGS To prevent youth from being involved in gangs or gang-related activities more states should implement programs similar to A&E’s “Beyond Scared Straight” to let kids see what the consequences of their actions could lead to. Gangs and crimes are increasing each year that it’s no wonder why kids fall susceptible to them. There are currently about 400,000 youth gang members and about 600,000 adult gang members in the United States. Out of all the youth gang members 360,000 of them are boys and 32,000 of them are girls. A lot of youths that join gangs end up committing crimes which land them in juvenile detention, according to research 15% of youth females and 85% of youth males are incarcerated in juvenile detention. Gangs also often lead to death and in 1994, 24% of youth deaths were gang-related and I’m sure the number has tripled by now. Some kids are born into gangs because it runs in their family and others choose to join but no good ever comes from them. Youths are easy targets for gang members to recruit for many reasons. Children aren’t very mature and do not yet fully understand the consequences of joining a gang so their easy to convince. Children also don’t know that gangs can be very difficult to get out of and sometimes the only way out is death. Some gangs let females get out if they become pregnant but the other options are to get jumped out. Children also see gangs as a way to make easy money to buy those things they...

...The Accident That Could Easily Be Solved. The theme to “The Man Who Was Almost A Man” can be interpreted in many different ways. Many may think that the theme is about how parents need to take more responsibility for what their kids do. Or some may say that parents need to be stricter with what their kids buy. I look at the theme of this story in a different way. What on earth was a parent thinking letting there 17 year old kid buy a gun? You never know what a teenager really wants a gun for. Dave could have been planning a murder or he could have been planning on hurting himself. Many kids in the world have very scary intentions now days. I know, back in the day the world wasn’t as scary and evil as it is today. But back in the day the police weren’t as strict either, so you could carry a gun and nothing would have really been done about it. If you carry a gun now days and don’t have a license, you will serve a minimum of five years in prison. And if you are under 18 you can also go to prison for that same offence. When Dave’s mother allows him to go buy the gun, I knew bad news was coming. She tells Dave to go to the corner and bring the gun right back for his father. When Dave gets home he hides the gun and tells his mother he hid it outside. If his mother was a responsible lady, she would have gone with Dave to get the gun right then. Then the accident happens where Dave went to work and decided to try out this weapon he had bought. He never once was taught how to...
