Reading reflection: Week 10 Seeking a Pedagogy of Difference: What Aboriginal Students and their Parents in North Queensland Say About Teaching and their Learning, written by Brian Ellis Lewthwaite, Barry Osborne, Natalie Lloyd, Helen Boon, Linda Llewellyn, Tammi Webber, Gail La n, Megan Harrison, Cathy Day, Codie Kemp, and Jennifer Wills, is a study that presents the outcomes of the first phase of a three phase research initiative where Aboriginal students and community members expressed their views of the characteristics of effective teachers and effective teaching. Considering that the national education discourse in Australia is monopolised by discussion on teaching and teacher quality, they problematize this discourse based upon what members of the local Aboriginal community assert as characteristics of effective teachers and their practice. The overall aim of this research was determined by the Diocese of Townsville Catholic Education’s aspiration to better inform their educators in seeing the realisation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait objectives for education in the practice of teachers within the district. The initial intent of this North Queensland Catholic Education initiative is to respond to the critical awareness of the possible injustice such as education, that historically and disputably, currently, marginalises Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander students through the classroom pedagogies influencing their learning (Dunn, 2001). The first project of importance to this particular study was conducted by Lewthwaite and colleagues. They engaged with numerous Northern Canadian Inuit and First Nations communities, including parents and students in discussions to identify the pedagogical actions that influence their learning. Through statistical methods, the researchers were able to identify influences of adjusted teacher behaviors on indigenous

White Privilege In Schools

...discrimination, disadvantages, worthless, and the list could go on with even more words that relate to racism. Jobs, acceptance, equality, benefits, this list is harder to label is it not? White Privilege is just as real as racism, but not as apparent. According the University of Dayton’s online dictionary, White Privilege is defined as, “a right, advantage, or immunity granted to or enjoyed by white persons beyond the common advantage of all others; an exemption in many particular cases from certain burdens or liabilities,” (“white privilege”). White Privilege is a subject rarely covered by educators due to the difficulty students’ have understanding it; therefore, resulting in a lack of awareness. White Privilege, unlike racism,...

Ruby Bridges: Segregation In All-White Schools

...Ruby Bridges was one of the first African American children to attend an all-white school after the Brown vs. Board of Education court case ruled unanimously that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The Brown vs. Board of Education case overturned the "separate but equal" doctrine of Plessy vs. Ferguson, deciding that the segregation law violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Bridges' family moved to New Orleans to improve their economic circumstances and she attended kindergarten at an African American school. Her entire class was tested to determine if they could attend a formerly white school that was a part of the school system's plan to integrate schools. Ruby was one of six African American children who passed the test in her class and were invited to enroll in one of the two all-white schools. Although her parents were divided about the dangerous decision to enroll her into a white school they wanted to give their...

High School Social Norms In Snow White

...People have been captivated by the “Disney magic” since 1937 when the first franchise movie, Snow White, was released. Over time Disney has continued to grow its audience as well as influence the lives of all ages. Often people ignore the negative effects that these movies can have on the self esteem of those who grew up watching them, especially females. The movies can mold the perceptions females have toward how they should look, act, and the people with whom they are interact. My group researched: To what extent do female high school social norms portrayed by Disney Channel movies from 2006-2010 impact their self esteem? Throughout our research, high school social norms were defined as the average daily experiences that high school students are believed...

World Religion Art Observation

...visited the Saint Petersburg College’s art gallery located at the Clearwater, Florida campus. While I was glazing at the many wonderful art pieces our student body created I could foresee how advanced humanity has become as a whole. Then I see this astounding painting reaching for some type of swords that were more like levitating from a pair of hands pointing up and down from left to right and standing with one leg while the other was lifted and reaching across the other leg in a trance posture. As I got closer, I realized I was looking at Franklin Fraze’s ‘Shiva’ painting. The Hindu influenced painting is mesmerizing and reminds you of the powerful influence the Hindu culture inhibits. The painting itself is made of black and white colors contradicting the color from each side its on. Here, Shiva is seen standing on top of another sphere resembling the female and male human body. This magnificent view inspires to the creation of...

My Best Day Ever

...how important family means to me.       On March 22, 1979, it was a warm, beautiful, breezy, summer day, and I could hear the chirping of baby birds in their nest. Upon my face shined the bright sun through my bedroom window. This day represented my birth right of turning fourteen years old, and I needed to figure out what to wear on this special occasion. As I walked toward my closet door, there was a breeze of warm spring sunflowers gathering in each corner of my bedroom. As I inhaled this delightful smell, I thought of my favorite sunflower dress to wear. The length went below my knees and it had two straps on each shoulder. The base color of my dress was pure white cotton material with medium sunflowers patterns around the bottom. I chose my flat flip-flop scandals and brushed my hair into a ponytail with a white ribbon tied in a bow. At that moment in my life, I felt like a beautiful young lady. As I stood in front of the mirror admiring myself, a loud knock rattle from the other side of my bedroom door. I opened the door, and there stood my sisters and brothers with the excitement of “Happy Birthday” roaring off their tongues. My eyes began to fill with tears just knowing that my family was as excited as I was about my special day. We all decided to run...

The Story Behind the Moon Cakes of Beijing

...the unique Beijing-style moon cakes have satisfied the taste buds(味蕾) of locals for generations. They may not look as fancy as Cantonese-style moon cakes, but the Beijing versions have their own unique features. The handmade, hard-crusted moon cakes are made of rock sugar, walnut kernels(核桃仁), pumpkin seeds(南瓜子) and qinghongsi(青红丝), or candied tangerine peel(陈皮) slices. "The most popular ones among Beijingers are zilaihong and zilaibai. Zilaihong uses red sugar in the dough, while zilaibai uses white sugar. The taste is simple but pure," said Chi Xiangdong, former Owner of Dao Xiang Cun. And there’s an interesting story behind zilaibai and zilaihong. Legend has that long ago a serious plague hit Beijing. To help the sick people, Chang’e the mythical Moon Goddess sent her servant the Jade Rabbit, which made two kinds of medicine, one red and one white. The medicine gradually evolved into zilaibai and zilaihong moon cakes, which preserved the red and white colors. Although it’s just a legend, ever since then, zilaibai and zilaihong moon cakes have always been linked to rabbits. "It’s actually a kind of toy for the kids, but it evokes memories from the past and definitely adds more fun to the festival," Chi Xiangdong said. Now, with more variations of moon cakes on the market, traditional Beijing moon cakes have begun to fade from public view. However, for some, the memories the cakes represent are the most precious. "When I was a boy, I always...

...very appealing to the eye, and marketing use this color’s attractiveness as an advantage. All of these ads have a strong use of pathos and ethos, they use stuff and persons with an important well known background, like the Einstein picture, who is famous for his energy theories and they took a good advantage of that, and by adding a little humor they can get more attention. The way they are fighting the war against France is pretty much as trying to make them look more important than France itself, like if France is lost and its dependant from Red Bull. By making war to France, they are getting more fame. All of these pictures contain black and white to make the viewer see the Red Bull drink better than the ad, that way they can know what is first, and then will focus their attention into the picture. Also, they are in black and white because they are telling you how boring everything is without Red Bull, and the drink Red Bull is in its colors blue, red, and silver, meaning that if you drink Red Bull your day will brighten up. In the picture with the old man is lifting into the air with his bicycle, there is other people in the background, and they are still in the ground, they cannot fly, because they don’t have Red Bull. So if you don’t get Red Bull you can’t fly and everyone loves flying, which is the background meaning for energy. They used an old man for this ad to represent that no matter what age you are, you can always get lots of energy. ...
