...Title: Who is the more effective leader? Executive Summary “Leadership is a complex phenomenon involving the leader, the followers and the situation” (Hughes, Ginnett and Curphy, 2012, p3). This paper will look at two leaders, one from the corporate sector and the other from the not-for-profit sector, Gail Kelly and Ian Cox. Both have developed styles of leadership to ensure they interact with their followers within particular environments and situation. Interactional framework needs to be taking into account, rather than looking at leaders, followers or situation in isolation, as this provides a complete view of the leadership process. The interactive nature of leader-followers-situation helps understand the changing nature of the leader-follower relationship and the increasingly greater complexity of situations leaders and followers face. An analysis of Gail Kelly’s and Ian Cox’s leadership styles exposes some similarities, within vastly different situations and followers. Daniel Goleman (2000) identified six different leadership styles, authoritative, affiliative, pace-setting, democratic, coaching and coercive. Both Kelly and Cox employ different styles in their attempt to gear the followers towards attainment of a goal, objectives and the fulfillment of a vision. The organisations that Ms Kelly and Mr Cox are employed have defined their leadership. Kelly heads and organisation who main goal is to make profits for its shareholders, whereas Cox’ role is...

...differences between ethical and unethical leadership, Craig Johnson uses the metaphor of casting light and shadow where leaders who cast light facilitate ethical processes and principles and leaders who cast shadow abuse power, manipulate and are deceitful. I have had an experience of being a group with a leader who cast shadow. It all occurred during my freshman year in JMU in one of my classes. The class was assigned into groups of six people and we were to pick the leader by ourselves within our group. Since no one wanted to be a leader in our group, we decided to draw lots and came up with the leader. The leaders of all the groups were responsible to submit any quizzes or assignments of their group members at the end of class throughout the semester. All the in class quizzes were to be done in groups and were to be checked by the group leaders and the leaders were responsible to submit the score of the quizzes of their group at the end of class on a card. Our group never got a 15 out of 15. The highest we had ever got was a 14. When professor posted all the grades on canvas a week before midterm, we were all surprised to see that none of our quizzes grades were lower than 14. They were all either 14 or 15. Our group leader texted in group me that the professor decided to bump all our grades because the class averages was low. That was how our group leader manipulated us to hide the fact that he changed our grades and submitted the grades we never got to the professor. Two...

...earned not given. To be a good leader you need to show that you will and can take care of the people you are leading. Everyone wants a leader that can take care of them and any problems that may arise. In the book Lord of the Flies there are three candidates to be leader; Piggy, Ralph and Jack. To me, the boy that would make the best leader in the book is Ralph. He has the background to be a great leader and he puts everyone else above him. He remains confident thought-out the entire book, and looks out for the wellbeing of the other boys. Qualities of a good leader are qualities that you are born with. Ralph would have made a great leader for the boys because he didn’t think about just food. He thought about things that they really needed, like shelter and fresh water. He also has the background to be a great leader. His father was a naval officer, and he knows what the boys need to survive on the island. In my own personal experiences I would be most likely to follow someone who has the background for leading and someone that is willing to be a leader....

...Anyone can be a leader. You can find a leader within your friends, family, authorities, or even your peers. Throughout life you come across many leaders, but what makes a good leader? A good leader has tolerance, dominance, passion, respect, confidence, clarity, empathy, sympathy, and many other traits, but most of all, a good leader is honest, listens to his people, and takes charge. In Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, the story begins in Rome with the celebration of Julius Caesar’s victory over Pompey, one of his enemies. Although Caesar was considered an outstanding general by many, not everyone supported him, and some even took down celebration decorations. Cassius was among those who were disapproving of Caesar, and he even plotted to kill him. For the success of his plot, Cassius acted as though Caesar’s death would be in Rome’s best interest, but he needs credibility, which is why he reached out to Brutus, a beloved and patriotic...

...Joseph Stalin showed characteristics of a totalitarian leader because he took advantage of his people and the resources of the country. Joseph Stalin had a secret police force, Created labor camps and, killed innocent people to protect his power. Joseph Stalin took advantage of people and made a secret police force to spy on his people. The police force was called the NKVD. His secret police had informers everywhere . An informer could be anyone in Russia at the time even your best friend could be a informant. His spies would listen to people's conversations and made sure they were not plotting anything against him. Stalin used the secret police to create fear in his people. He wanted his people to live in fear so they would put up walls and not talk to people so there would be no chance of a revolution breaking out against his tyranny. I think this shows Stalin had totalitarian traits because he used a secret police force to constantly watch his people and keep them scared and uneasy. He also showed Totalitarian traits because he would do anything to protect his power....

...Campus Universidad del Turabo Diciembre 16, 2013 MANA 450 Workshop V Effective Leadership Leadership is to guide a group of people to work together to reach goals. But do not confuse to convince and to force. Any manager can force their employees to work, but only a leader can convince them to work for a common good. When it comes to talk about leader, we have to talk about authoritarian leader, participative leader and delegative leader. All have leadership in common, but none seem between them. When you study them, you realize that they are as different between them as well as leaders by position are different from natural leaders. All leaders are leaders at the end of the road, but with different characteristics. What is a leader? A leader is a person who has the ability to convince a group of people working together to achieve set goals. Remember that a leader would not be a leader if he would not have people to follow him. There are two kinds of leaders, the leader by position and natural leader. The leader by position is leading only by the position you have in a company. That does not mean that manager or administrator knows how to be a leader and how to lead your workgroup. And the leader by nature is a person that without having a high position in the company, knows how to convince or reach their working group and help them succeed. This person could even be a seller. But that seller has the ability to manipulate the team and transmit what the manager or supervisor...

... 2 Abstract What comes to mind when the words leader or leadership are heard? Usually a president, a teacher, a C.E.O, a work supervisor or a prime minister comes to mind. Well these are people who are considered to be leaders because they work to achieve a positive change for a particular organization or community. Leadership is the process in which a particular individual influences others to achieve an objective or a common goal. This paper will explain what the term leadership means, the key factors that make up a true leader and the impact as well as the importance that leadership has in our lives. LEADERSHIP 3 Leadership describes the influence certain individuals have on others to carry out a specific objective or goal. According to authors Susan Komives, Nance Lucas, and Timothy McMahon (2007); “leadership is a relational and ethical process of people together attempting to accomplish positive change” (p. 2). This practically means that leadership is mostly about the kind of relationships a person has with others. Personal awareness and personal development are key to learning leadership, which at the end it focuses on the development of relationships with others. A leader is not someone who just tells someone else what to do, or someone who makes up rules, a true leader is someone who develops a good relationship with a group of people, and eventually...

...INTRODUCTION [pic] There is no leader without at least one follower. Yet the modern leadership industry, now a quarter-century old, is built on the proposition that leaders matter a great deal and followers hardly at all. Good leadership is the stuff of countless courses, workshops, books, and articles. Everyone wants to understand just what makes leaders tick—the charismatic ones, the retiring ones, and even the crooked ones. Good followership, by contrast, is the stuff of nearly nothing. Most of the limited research and writing on subordinates has tended to either explain their behavior in the context of leaders’ development rather than followers’ or mistakenly assume that followers are amorphous, all one and the same. As a result, we hardly notice, for example, that followers who tag along mindlessly are altogether different from those who are deeply devoted. In reality, the distinctions among followers in groups and organizations are every bit as consequential as those among leaders. This is particularly true in business: In an era of flatter, networked organizations and cross-cutting teams of knowledge workers, it’s not always obvious who exactly is following (or, for that matter, who exactly is leading) and how they are going about it. Reporting relationships are shifting, and new talent-management tools and approaches are constantly emerging. A confluence of changes—cultural and technological ones in particular—have influenced what subordinates want and how they...

...Goleman defines a leader as a person who identifies a human need and designs a solution to meet the need. Most leaders in our workplace are very competent when it comes to leadership roles but always lack the human aspect of leadership.Research have shown that mist outstanding leaders in organizations are those who can combine emotional intelligence and rational leadership. Many leaders who are excellent are denied promotion to senior positions because they lack the human aspect of leadership. ...relationships (Dachler 1988). Current theoretical approaches on leadership research is concern about a greater extent role of leadership research which describe and give some understanding and recommends for effective leader behaviour and normative models. They focus more on explanations of leadership processes, describing leader behaviours, and present why behaviours occur in certain situations. If there are behavioural recommendations are available it means this is usually done more carefully and rarely without any philosophy that anything is possible. Current leadership theories are accepting the limits which have leader influence. "The best leaders are those most interested in surrounding themselves with assistants and associates smarter than they are. They are frank in admitting this and are willing to pay for such talents."(Amos Parrish). Leader is a "person who rules or guides or inspires others"(Andrew, 2007).
