New Girl

...famous speech "I have a dream". Martin Luther King Jr. was a black man, who fought against both apartheid and segregation. His dream came true, as we live in a world where it is accepted by most to have different skin colour, a different culture and religion. The short story "The new girl" by Marc Mitchell, is a good example that children can be more accepting of others, but also how easily parents can affect their children's opinions. The story takes place in a suburb in Alabama around the 1970's, as the story is the narrators flashback from 20 years before the story was written, and the band 'Hall and Oates' was founded in the late 1960's, and it is mentioned that Allison has an interest in that specific band. In this story the narrator is also the protagonist as it is being told in a 1st person point of view. The narrator lived on a street by the name Prospect Street, in a "white lower-middle class neighborhood" (p. 22, l. 15.) In this story, there is the protagonist, Allison and the new girl, whose name we do not know. The protagonist was eight in the beginning of the story and was, together with Allison, one of the only children on the block, so they "were best friends by default." (p. 1, ll. 7-8). The two children spent a lot of time together, as it is written in the text "During summer we spent a lot of time riding our bikes, playing clue, and pretending to be married." (p.21-22, ll.1-2). The protagonist does not mind that the new girl has a different skin colour, as it is...

The Hero

...Critical Response: Construction of the Hero Cara O’Keefe The construction of the ‘Hero’ is one every writer should consider. The hero or protagonist is designed to keep the narrative moving and whose actions create progress for the plot (Morrow et al, 1997). Pearson (2001, p. 101) defines hero’s as “fearless protagonists who realise their own special power and go on to take great personal risks in order to change their reality. In day-to-day life, these powerful archetypes provide a structure that can release the ability of ordinary people to rise to challenges, take risks, break rules, and transform their lives”. There are many ways of defining what a hero is and what a protagonist is. A hero is usually the protagonist but this is not always the case and vice versa. For clarification purposes within this analysis a protagonist or hero is a character who drives the narrative and plot and who embarks upon a learning journey that changes them. Me Talk Pretty One Day

...the name of the protagonist, all we know about him is that he is at the age of forty-one, and has now moved from New York to Paris with hopes of learning the language. Our protagonist is forty-one years old and has moved from New York to Paris to learn the French language. He loves leafing through medical textbooks, and has a love for IBM typewriters, things he detest is blood sausage, intestinal pâtes and brain pudding. He is a sensitive person and seems that he is very young at heart, because of many of his statements throughout the essay, one of them would be: ‘’ Turn ons: Mom’s famous fire-alarm chili! Turnoffs: insecurity and guys who come too strong!!!!’’(Lines 43-44, p.7) On his first day in school he is feeling a bit uncomfortable, or ‘’nerve-racking’’ as he says himself. He did feel indisposed as all the other students were all young, attractive and well dressed, which makes him feel like Pa Kettle, who is a comic character, so we should presume that he is a comic fanatic, since he compares himself to a comic character. The first time he meet his teacher, he could only understand half of what she was saying. ‘If you have not meimslsxp or 1gpdmurct by this time, then you should not be in this room. Has everyone apzkiubjxow?’’(Lines 21-22, p.6), this sentence was an example of what he hears and understands when his French teacher is speaking. The French teacher is very offensive in her way of teaching and has a very high temperament, as our protagonist says’’...

Moreno is very effective in treating certain disorders such as depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, trauma survivors, and it has been used in marital counseling. In psychodrama a person is helped to gain insights through role playing. This helps the person to gain a better understanding of their problems and turn them into more realistic and meaningful thoughts. Psychodrama can be very effective when used correctly and it continues to offer therapists new ways to treat patients. Therapy Psychotherapy is a technique used to change a person’s behavior, thought process, assumptions, and even sometimes their personality. Therapy is a term often used to encompass all acts of psychotherapy under one common theme, to help the client. Therapy today consists of many different types and themes. Some such as Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck suggested that our cognitive processes are responsible for our behavior, thoughts, and emotions and this developed into the cognitive model (Comer, 2004). Others such as Carl Rogers believed in a more client-centered approach that is “non-directive and based in insights gained from conscious thoughts and feelings” (Coon, 2000). Well known therapies include Freudian psychoanalysis...

Where the Gods Fly

...finds great trouble when her daughter becomes imbedded in a Western culture, which is almost completely incomprehensible to the mother. The short story is told by a nameless first person, auto diegetic narrator, with limited and internal omniscience. The name of the protagonist is never told, but all of her thoughts and contemplations are depicted very thoroughly. This type of narration never describes the thoughts of any of the other characters. The story is written sort of as a memoir and therefore it is difficult to track the exact timeline of the story. The protagonist is a Chinese woman who has immigrated to America with her husband and little daughter. It is described that the main character is uneducated and that she was not allowed to study as young in China, and she only picked up a little bit from looking at her brothers’ books. (p. 4 l. 77-79) This means that se is very uneducated and therefore works at an industrial factory in America. Furthermore, she is also unable to speak English, which means that her young daughter has to translate for her; “For years it had been little Pearl who had gone everywhere with me to act as my ears and tongue.” (p. 4 l. 95-96) It is also seen that the protagonist is a Chinese Buddhist and that she therefore distance herself subconsciously from the Western...

Comparing The Protagonists In Godfather Death And A & P

...recorded, sequential human thought told for the purpose of entertainment to ever exist here on Earth. At its core, the art of storytelling contains many elements that make up a story. Such elements include characters: imagined individuals within a story, setting: where the story takes place- sequentially, and plot: the story being told chronologically. I shall be writing about two other ingredients of literature found within the stories “Godfather Death” by The Brothers Grimm and “A&P” by John Updike, universally identified as protagonist and antagonist. Primarily, I will be identifying and analyzing the protagonists and antagonists of both stories according to Kennedy’s and Gioia’s definition of the terms. According to them, the definition of a protagonist is: the principle person who thrives” and an antagonist is “a character who opposes and interferes with the protagonist as he seek his objectives”. In the first story, “Godfather Death”, the protagonist is the doctor. Even though the doctor is the protagonist, there were multiple actions taken by him,...

How Women Writers Use the Concept of Motherhood as a Gender-Divide to Explore the Themes of Entrapment and Escape in Literature.

...ENGL347: Women Writers: Assessed Essay “Becoming a mother will be the one thing that frees you as a woman. But it will also be the one thing that traps you...” – Anon. Discuss the way in which women writers use the concept of motherhood as a gender-divide to explore the themes of entrapment and escape in literature. Since the 19th century, the broader sense of literature as a ‘totality of written or printed works’, and the foundational means of communicating information or ideas, has given way to a range of more exclusive and specific definitions. The rapid growth of adult literacy, combined with economic, social and political developments have vastly increased the sheer spectrum and quantity of subject matter and forms which fall under this umbrella term, forcing the need for greater categorisation in order to make ‘literature’ more accessible to the general reader. The resulting categories which attempt to standardise this process may take many forms, including observation of the structure or literary genre of the text (for example, categorising the text as a novel, poem, report or article) or perhaps the particular literary period or movement, which will link all associated texts with underlying principles or stylistic traits, such as the Romantic era or Post-Colonial literature. However, due to a long-standing patriarchal tradition dominating the history of literature- a literary practice challenged and corrected by the rise of the Feminist movement, particularly following...

Many of her short stories share the same theme of female oppression and independence, as well as freedom from the oppression. They are trying to find a way out of the oppression placed on them by their husbands and use immoral ways to find freedom. In her stories the protagonists really...

Yellow Wall Paper

...Wallpaper" is the story of a woman's descent into madness as the result of being isolated as a form of "treatment" when suffering from post-partum depression. The author, who is believed to be narrator as well, talks about her personal travel in to the world where an illness has brought her. All her thought and feelings are written in a journal and as she goes down in to the world that she has created in the confines of the room where she was kept. The story line presents that the narrator's mental condition is getting worse, leading to psychosis. Gilman explains the complexities of woman nature as she uses symbolisms to define the psychological realms of the plot. “The Yellow Wallpaper” The unnamed woman in this story (believed to be the author herself) fantasies about the yellow wallpaper are driving her mad. The protagonist experienced hallucinations and persistent thoughts over things. Crawling women, colorful artwork and a moving pattern depict the narrator's increased anxiety and impaired judgment, "Through watching so much at night, when it changes so, I have finally found out" (Gilman 7). The developments happening in the Balogun 2 wallpaper greatly signifies the progress of the narrator's mental sickness. Evidently, the author is utilizing symbolism in the short story, whereas the protagonist watches herself completely free from inhibitions and...

Protagonists Desire for Change

...Protagonists’ Desire for change In “A&P” by John Updike and “Araby” by James Joyce the protagonists make important life decisions. Both stories are about young men, leading dull lives, who go through a major change, while trying to escape from their lives. In both stories this change takes place while trying to please a female who triggers something inside them, causing them to act. “Araby” is different from “A&P” because it has religious elements as well as a connection through alienation. In “Araby” the narrator is closely following the crush that he has on Mangan’s sister. The narrator makes a kind of gesture to take Mangan’s sister to the bazaar, but she turns it down because of previous plans. Sammy and the narrator are similar in the sense that they both follow their desire for change. ‘Araby’ and ‘A&P’ are stories of unsuccessful attempts to escape from ordinary lives, only in different ways. Both stories end in darkness to prove that alienation can change the way people react to different situations and both show how the characters react towards change. The fate of Sammy from “A&P” surrounds the ideas of self-identity, desire for change and emerging adulthood, whereas “Araby” outlines alienation, desire for change and the dangers of idealization. The reader gets caught by the setting first in both stories. The protagonists describe the neighborhoods and the daily life in the cities that they live in, in detail. Sammy is stuck in the daily routine of the policy...
