...Ivy Allshouse To Eat or Not to Eat PSY 240 November 17, 2012 Rebecca Gadza To Eat or Not to Eat Good Afternoon everyone, thank you for joining us today for our discussion on eating disorders. For those of you who have not been here before my name is Ivy, I am the counselor here at Healthy Mind, Healthy Weight Center for Eating Disorders. Today we will be talking about Obesity/Anorexia and the reasons we eat or don’t eat. First I would like to start today’s session off talking about some of the physiological aspects of eating and why we really eat. There are many different theories of what tells us we need to eat. We get the feeling of hunger to signal when we need to eat. As we all know we provide our self with food and that food is converted into energy. Once the food enters our body it starts what is called digestion. Digestion is a gastrointestinal process that breaks down food and absorbs the vitamins, minerals, and fats into the body. Once food is digested it is converted into energy and stored in three forms; fats, proteins, and glycogen. Energy is mostly stored as fat in the body for two reasons, one it holds more energy than glycogen and two glycogen holds more water, which would make the average person over 600 pounds. There are three phases that each person goes to through to metabolize energy (Pinel, 2009). The cephalic phase is the first phase. The cephalic phase begins with the sight, smell, or thought of food. The cephalic stage ends once the food compounds...

...longer lunch including students have more time to relax and a break from all the stress that school gives. If you have more time to eat then you have more time to talk, which helps kids relax. Attention spans are dropping among students, and short lunch periods may be part of the problem (Food Service Solutions). Wouldn't you be ready to learn after a 40 minute lunch break? The second reason why there should be longer lunches is that it is way healthier. For example if the lunch is longer then the lunch ladies have more time to prepare the food. Which means healthy lunch, more greens and more fruits. Also rushing to eat doesn't give students time to recognize things like signs of fullness or the way certain foods make them feel (¨Food Service Solutions¨). And the Journal of Academy of Nutrition conducted an experiment on an elementary school. They found out that students eat 13% less of their main...

...Why Are Americans So Fat? Walking into your local Walmart to grab a pack of batteries for the new camera you just bought can be quite disturbing. If you walk around and look at the majority of the people shopping there, probably more than half are considered to be obese. Most people do not realize how many overweight people there are, because we are just so used to seeing them. It is not a big surprise that Americans have become more overweight over the last couple decades. But what has happened in American society to create this crisis? Back in the “old days,” woman used to stay home while the man would go to work to support his family. The woman would clean the house, take care of the kids, and have a home cooked meal ready to eat at dinner time. Very few families in America follow this traditional way of living in today’s society. The economy is substandard with both parents needing to work to support their families and do not have time to come home and cook a decent, healthy meal. The easiest and fastest dinner consists of heating up some sort of processed food or stopping at a fast food restaurant on the way home to grab a few value meals. Stopping at a fast food place like McDonalds to get dinner for a family of four is a lot cheaper than buying fresh healthy food at the grocery store and preparing it. A person can buy four value meals at McDonalds for twenty dollars. In comparison to going to the grocery store to spend at least thirty five dollars on buying...

...Healthy is something no one seems to do anymore. Between fast food and television people are becoming more and more lazy and relying on cheap foods to satisfy them both mentally and hunger wise. In this essay I will explain the importance of eating right and how your eating habit can affect your health in the long run. There are many reasons to eat healthy; one of those reasons is to support your immune system. Our body’s blood cells decide what’s good and what’s bad for us. If you’re constantly eating fruits and vegetables yr body will extract all the nutrients inside the fruits and vegetables to help support your immune system and help it fight against any bacteria that can cause illness. Now if you’re mostly eating junk foods, your body will not have any natural nutrients to extract and will not be able to support your immune system to ward off any bacteria that can/will cause illness. By not feeding your body right, eventually your body will start to shut down. Most people don’t see it as a problem since they feel medication can basically fix any kind of illness they encounter, but in the long run medication winds up damaging your body and the only other solution to cure the body that relied on the medication that was suppose to cure it is give it either a stronger dosage of medication or something different that will eventually cause another side affect. Now personally I don’t think my health is worth going through all that when all you had to do was change your eating habits....

...within the animal kingdom is not as civilized as it should be. When looking at it from a moral and religious perspective, humans should treat all animals equally. Statistics have shown that in developed countries such as the United States, animals such as dogs are treated far better than other animals. The question then arises, why do dogs get treated more diligently while other animals with the same mental capacity get slaughtered and consumed? By looking at "Let Them Eat Dog" by Jonathon Foer, the perception of why one should not think of dogs as superior animals and why the idea of consuming a dog should not be looked down upon in society will be thoroughly analyzed and examined. People in the United States think it’s morally wrong to eat dogs since it is a household pet. The same people who don’t eat dogs, eat other animals such as pigs, chickens, and cows, which is questionable because they still devour animals that are necessary to the environment and society today. In "Let Them Eat Dog" by Jonathon Foer, the author gives logical reasons on why we should eat dog, and why it is not harmful to the society in any manner. It's legal in 44 states to eat dog, and dog meat poses no greater health risk than any other meat. The problem arises is that a dog is labeled as a "man's best friend". Therefore, it is merely wrong to even think of eating a dog in the United States. Because pets such as dogs and cats are considered to be valuable in an average American Household, statistics...

...To Eat or Not to Eat Good afternoon everyone. My name is Jennifer and I will be running the “To Eat or Not to Eat” group this afternoon. Again, my name is Jennifer, and I have worked here at Turning Point for seven years. I personally do not have any eating-related disorders, but I do have a twin sister who has suffered her entire life with a severe eating disorder which is why I decided to council others who have eating disorders. Please feel free, and do not hesitate to ask any questions that you may have. Today I would like to go over some of the physiological myths regarding hunger and satiety, as well as the physiological factors associated with hunger and satiety being. Satiety is the feeling of no longer being hungry, or what some people might refer to as full. Whether it be for comfort, or pleasure, or just out of habit, we all eat. Some people can eat a meal and think nothing of it. For others, eating could be detrimental to their physical and mental health. Most people do not take time to learn about the food they eat. There have been a number of theories in regards to hunger and eating. One of the theories is known as the set-point assumption theory, which gives the idea that after eating a meal our energy level would gradually decrease until it reached a certain point, alerting us to consume food for more energy, and when our energy level was brought back to the set-point we would be satiated. This may seem correct, however if hunger and eating is regulated...

Some teens take AP and honors classes so they could easily get into colleges. Taking those classes puts a lot of stress into students if they don’t have time to study or do their homework. If school starts at a later time. They would definitely have the time to do it and they’d be able to sleep more. According to a research, not having enough sleep can have a huge effect on a student’s concentration, focusness, and alertness. They will feel sleepy and have problems focusing in school. ...discussed in our world today. Why some choose for it to take over their lives in a question many wonder. What it can do long term is fatal. Through researching this topic, its important to look at different aspects and how its affecting individuals and the health risks involved. To first understand it we need to know what Obesity exactly is. Obesity is a medical condition in which a person is excessively overweight. When you are obese you have far exceeded the average amount of weight you should be for your height. Another way of looking at it is Dr. Brian Wansink’s way of looking at it. “Obesity can be a condition when we eat more than we think” (Mindless Eating, pg 5). A person who over indulges on food in enormous amounts is putting a massive toll on the body. An abnormally high proportion of body fat, and when a person reaches this level they are officially labeled obese. What could be the causes of massive over weight to occur? A number of things can be a cause. Over eating is the biggest cause. Instead of eating normal portions and three meals a day, obese people will exceed far past that. They will go above and beyond, and will stop at no cost. Types of food many choose to eat is another. Things like fast food is available for us to get which plays a big part. These high calorie places and over indulgence can make one become obese. Getting no exercise or not enough can be a cause as well. Exercise is important in our daily lives, over eating and not exercising is not...

...People of the United States are known worldwide for their ability to consume unhealthy foods with no hesitation, resulting in impact on their health. Americans should have the freedom to choose what food they eat and the lifestyles they choose regardless of the impact on their health. The government and groups are attempting to change this. The people of America are being questioned on their consumption now, because of recent food chains giving out thousands of calories practically for free. The people are allowed to eat what they want because thats a natural right of an American citizen. The people of america should be allowed to eat what they want because if they were not then our rights would be broken and the people would feel violated. New york put a soda ban out earlier last year, ” and it was quickly revolted,’The Bloomberg big-soda ban is officially dead’ ( MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM).They made the argument that doing this would save more people's lives because it would help stop arteries from clogging in turn saving people's lives. Court realizes the violation and so does fox “The push to legally prevent individuals from having a french fry "their way" is likely to prevail…if not in New York, then elsewhere — and soon…. ...Some of the Causes of Obesity Why is obesity spreading all over the U.S.? People cannot blame the food because the food doesn’t walk into our mouths. There are so many foods that are claimed to taste unbelievably good, they can’t be avoided. It is the foods that are unhealthy for our bodies that we choose to eat. Americans want to eat what we want then at the end of the day complain about how it made us gain weight or become obese. Obesity affects both adults and young children all over the U.S. and it’s become a huge problem over the years. People choose not to eat unhealthy after they find out they’re having heart trouble or breathing problems caused by obesity. Why wait until the last minute or until you’ve reached your last breath? To overcome obesity diet changes have to take place. Government data shows that in 2012 about 34.9% of the adults in the U.S. country were obese, which is about 35 pounds over a healthy weight. The obese percentage was about the same in 2010. Since 1960 the obesity rates are continuing to grow as decades go by. ...About 12,000 years ago, humans transitioned into a period of farming and agriculture. Humans were barely learning the basics in food preservation, as their ancestors had previously relied on hunting and gathering to obtain food. In Sean Hammond's article, he talks about how in the past, the lack of food preservation to transport food for long distances caused serious health issues to people. Some of the issues mentioned in the article include, "…bacteria and fungi rapidly colonize, increase in population, and produce toxic and distasteful chemicals" (Hammond). Soon enough, technological advances brought forth industrial food supplies that transported food all over the place. Because this was so new to people, no one bothered to take into account...
