...Why I Decided to Return Back To School 6/19/14 Kathy Davis Professor Nancy Segovia Returning back to school was a very natural decision for me. It seemed to be the next logical step in my personal and careers goals. My ultimate goal is to be healthy and happy and be a good role model for my family members. I am more mature with my decision to return back to school now. The initial thought I had about returning back to school was that of apprehension due to the fact that I struggled a great deal throughout junior and high schools and had a false belief for years that I would not be successful if I attempted to go to college. I let my twenties, thirties, and my forties pass me bye with this belief firmly in me in my thinking and there was no one or anything to convince me of anything else, because I allowed my fear of failure to rule me all these year. I wanted to do something that was really going to have a lasting impact to someone’s life. Immediately thought about my children, letting them know it’s never too late to get a degree from any college. Going back to school can be a tough decision but being positive and having confidence can lead to success. Now that I am stable in life than I was when I finished or even years ago when I was considering going to school again I am more mature with why I decided to return back to the decisions I made forward toward...

After high school, Hines started college and quickly decided against it. She wanted to get married and start a family, in which she did. Looking back now Hines would have preferred to get her degree before starting a family. Although, the love she has for her family is undeniable. She feels as though it would have been a lot easier. The guilt of not spending enough time with her family would not be a concern, as well as being able to take more classes. “As parents we should lead by example, it is important to stress education, but even better to prove the point being made”, said Hines....

...Why? Prepared by Eric Norwood They say that sometimes good things come to those that wait and great things come to those that work. I once heard this myth that I find fascinating; as we get older we get wiser. No matter what the age, I think that getting and education is a wise decision. For many reasons, including an unstable economy, people over 40 are returning back to college campuses. Being a Senior Admissions Advisor at a Career College, I have had the privilege of witnessing this on a daily basis. As a 40 year old myself, I too have decided to return to college. That’s right I am going back to school. It is never too late to finish what you started. Why I chose to go back to school? I would be shocked if my reasons were not the same as most people. I could probably think of many reasons why I decided to go back to school. In this essay, I will share a few reasons. One personal reason is to finish what I started. In June 1996, I graduated with a B.S. in Sociology at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. In September 1996, I entered into graduate school for M.A. in Sociology, specializing in Industrial Relation. I completed two years of studies, including an internship at United States Postal Service (USPS). Following that, I got hired for the USPS, and quickly promoted through the ranks to the Office of Inspector General. I spent the next 12 years working as an Internal Auditor for the government. Life got in front of me, had an auditing career...

...LIFE There are many reasons why I decided to return to school. Wanting a better education, money and most of all my sense of accomplishment are the reasons I am now in school. I decided to return to college after leaving school nearly 40 years ago. It has been a long road of getting here and have had many roadblocks in my way. I got married at the age of 17 and became a mother at the age of 18. My husband was very old fashioned and thought no one should attend school while they were pregnant. This reason caused me to drop out of high school only six weeks into my senior year of high school. I was not concerned with school at all. I was happy being a mom to my little boy. Nearly two years later I finally decided to get my GED. I passed the test so easily and again no further thoughts of school or an education. I was married and thought I would be a housewife forever. If that were true I wouldn’t need to further my education. Or at least that was my thinking. After watching my children grow up and go to school I felt something was missing. I couldn’t help my children with their homework because it was too advanced for me. This made me decide that I needed a better education. Years later I was very fortunate to find a job with a great company. A formal education wasn’t required and I have done just fine. I work with many educated people and those made me stop and take a long look at myself. I take phone calls all day long and want something more. I suddenly realized that to have...

...Brian Fansler MBA: Why I decided to get an MBA degree Receiving my Undergraduate degree was one of my most proud moments in my life, I felt a since of accomplishment, responsibility, and acceptance. I just knew I was going to now be able to provide better for my family. That is why everyone around me said goes to college. Finish and graduate. A college degree can only help you and not hurt you. Well that statement can be a bit misleading, while yes a college degree won’t hurt you, it didn’t help me much either. I got into a situation that I had the degree but lacked the experience. Why didn’t anybody tell me to work as well? Get an internship? A mentor? I guess everyone had the misconception that college degrees grantee a good paying job; however, sometimes it’s not the case. I have come to say continuing education, even well beyond an undergrad, will not only help your career situation, but set a standard for your family and or kids, to always continue learning. Objection: An MBA will not guarantee a good job. It won’t guarantee a job, but what does? Having an MBA has put me more marketable with employers. Bryan Cohen argues that “First-year accountants with an associate degree made an average of $33,300 per year, while those with an MBA earned $39,800 per year as of April 2011 (Cohen, 2001). MBA open a world of big possibilities in a career field., The reason I decided, why not get my degree, is because I know it will pay off in the long run, when I want to pursue positions...

...Jun 16, 2015 As a Retired Veteran with a distinguish career and living the American Dream, I am now an un-employed husband and a father of a 33 months old son. In May 2013, I moved from Middle Georgia to South Florida for better living and a good way of life for my new family. For over five and a half years, I was working for a major corporation that got their business from the Federal Government contracts by bidding and performing needed services at different locations around the world. Because of government cuts in Sept 2013, I lost my position due to the company's Workforce Reduction Policy and I became unemployed. Luckily, I had saved up a few month’s pay and the company gave me a severance package. From the time I received my official notice letter, I had been applying for different types of Information Technology jobs in the Miami area, attending job fairs, and attending interviews and it all comes down to... "I see you have a lot of experience in the IT field, but do you have this degree and certain certifications that’s required for this position?" I have to say no, but I am working to obtain the current certifications and attending classes toward my degree. Later, you get an email or a follow up call informing you of their non-selection for the position due to whatever reason or justification to fit their needs. Like any other man without a viable source of income, I have to do a new career paradigm and apply for jobs above my current education level. To get the...

...own comfort spot. By this, i simply mean a physical or emotional place where one identifies with his her self, and finds peace. There are infinite possible comfort spots, be it one's own bed, in a certain car, the memory of a past-time, etc. These periods of solace are a true necessity to maintaining an optimistic perspective on life. In times of stress or depressing moods, we rely on our comfort thoughts. It is because of this concept that I decided to examine these "happy places" not just in myself, but those closest to me as well. I have dissected the reasons for particular comfort spots and developed the thesis that it requires time away from these states or areas of solace to truly appreciate them as something they identify themselves most with. Before i began interviewing my family, I first asked my self the same question, pondering what my own comfort spot is. I quickly realized that this particular topic requires a decent bit of contemplating. Upon careful consideration, I decided my own comfort area to be my own room back at home, in Monroe, North Carolina. The secluding privacy of an area completely customized to fit my taste, for myself at least, is the best form of relaxation. During times when I am stressed, or when I just wish to think, or possibly just want to be alone, I have always, up until college, turned to the solitude of my room, giving myself time to calm down, or consider issues important to me. I think one of the reasons I have always turned to my...

...When I got my high school diploma at the age of 52, I was the luckiest and happiest person in the whole wide world I know the education is the key to my future. Ever since I got my diploma in 2011, I have been excited and planning for a way to go to college. Unfortunately, I was not able to obtain student loans due to a default on a prior loan about 30yrs ago. I was very disappointed by this, but I decided to focus on other areas to improve my life. When I became a PWG member, they gave me joy, inspiration and courage and I must say perseverance. In fact, I gained so much courage and perseverance from my experience with PWG that I went out and found my first job in quite a while at Walmart. During the time I have been working there, I realized that I am still striving for more in my life, and have decided to return to pursing my dream of attending college. Dress for success was something that enables me to get back on the right track. I was lost half of my life using and abusing drugs and I can’t undo what is already done. I do know I can change my future its not where I’ve been but where I am going that counts. I believe in miracles and I have faith, when I decided to get my life back on the right track I knew that education was one of the most important thing anyone should obtain in their lifetime, so by me receiving this scholarship I will be truly grateful. ...Peter Denney Professor Paterson English 112 29 Oct. 2013 Should College Athletes Make the Big Bucks? At what point does an athlete lose the true meaning behind playing a sport? When do they decide that making a hefty paycheck outweighs their actual desire to compete in the game they have grown to love? When reaching a certain skill level like that of college, athletes crave a greater reward than just success. I’m currently a collegiate athlete and I’ve often wondered why athletes like me don’t get paid. Collegiate athletes give all of their time in school and on sports and suggest that they deserve something in return other than just scholarship funds. College is very expensive and without some type of financial aid, most students would drown in debt acquired from student loans. Scholarships available to go to certain universities aid student-athletes during each semester, but do not cover most external costs. Players are presented with a choice when participating in a college sport. The decision to attend a school of preference and partake in a sport, all comes down to the individual. Paying college athletes is a difficulty because paying male athletes and female athletes equally would be a huge challenge. Though it may be a choice to play sports in college, I want to know the meaning behind athletes not getting paid. Being a college athlete can be directly translated as an occupation. When a player wakes up in the morning, they either have 8 A.M. classes or a workout...

...There is an ongoing debate whether associate-degree level curricula prepare the nursing student proficiently for a successful entry-level career in nursing. In fact, many studies have been conducted to determine the differentiation of competencies between an Associate of Science degree in Nursing (ASN) and a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree (BSN). Before I discuss about some of the literature findings, I would like to provide one Pennsylvania’s Nursing School ASN objectives which are for the student to gain nursing knowledge, develop clinical skills, and reaffirm care and compassion. Whereas, the BSN program objectives are to enhance nursing knowledge through advancing the student’s critical thinking skills, communication skills, theoretical knowledge, and professional education. (PCHS, 2014) As the reader can see, there is a direct correlation between education received and what the learner can be expected to demonstrate in their nursing career. In this paper, I hope to identify the differences of competencies between both degrees and describe how nursing care approach may differ. The American Association of College in Nursing (AACN) has provided a fact sheet on “The Impact of Education on Nursing Practice”, within in the document, it focuses on studies that report BSN prepared RN’s experience lower mortality rates and better patient outcomes compared to their counterparts. (AACN, 2014) According to AACN, the National Advisory Council on Nursing Education and Practice...

...project I will be presenting both the NPV and IRR calculations for a graduating senior in the B.S. Economics program at Lehigh University. However, before I start my discussion about my methodologies and findings, I think it is important to discuss why this study is so important. To so many people, myself included, college is really taken for granted and idea that education is an investment in the future isn’t recognized until its time to get a job. If I had been presented with more of this information regarding rates of return for different majors and disciplines, I may have had a different path through college. This data can be incredibly helpful to high school students who are on the edge between deciding to go to college and deciding not to go to college. This is especially relevant with all the financial aid programs today, most people can afford to go to school through loans, and from my findings most will benefit from it in the long run. If this data were more readily available to high school students, I believe we would see an increase in high school graduates attending college because they would more easily be able to see the benefits. To do this I will be using a breadth of sources including data from the National Association of Colleges and Employers and Lehigh’s own empirical data on its college graduates. Throughout the process of this assignment, I have run into several obstacles to calculating the returns to my specific degree. The first issue that I discovered...
