...English Composition I Professor Beth Riley October 23, 2013 Homelessness is More Appealing Many of us will never be homeless, and not everyone understands the benefit of having a wife, but after reading the essays’, Homeless (Quindlen, A. n.d.) and I Want a Wife (Brady, J. 1971), one can gain a better understanding of both. I am a wife. Therefore, I can certainly connect with the narrator’s story of I Want a Wife. This is a narrative essay, in which the narrator reflects on why she too would like to have a wife after a visit with a recently divorced male friend, who is looking for a new wife. The narrator gives a list of duties and activities she will and will not do if she had a wife, and she can visualize the benefits a wife could afford her with less responsibilities and more time for school or friends. My other essay of choice is quite different in theme, but it is still relatable. Anne Quindlen’s essay, Homeless (n.d.) is a short descriptive essay with the narrator retelling of an account when she met a woman, who she believes is homeless, at the bus terminal. It is during the encounter that the narrator reflects on homeless people in general, the homeless individual and about herself. Both of these essays’ are well written, however, I feel that Homeless (Quindlen, A. n.d.), is a more appealing essay than I Want a Wife (Brady, J. 1971), as it allows the reader to become more engaged in the descriptions and reflect on the details of the story. Whenever I first start reading...

...behaviour. Even after spontaneously and brutally killing an innocent homeless man, he still finds his evening anticlimactic and boring, and regrets not attending dinner with some colleagues at the Salvadorian bistro. In this chapter of the novel “American Psycho”(1991) by Bret Easton Ellis, Patrick Bateman, a successful and wealthy businessman, brutally murders an innocent homeless man. Bateman approaches the bum as a kind and caring person, willing to lend him a few dollars for food and shelter. “”You want some money?” I ask gently. “Some food””? (p. 135 l. 3.). At first Bateman reaches for a ten dollar bill, but reconsiders and finds a five dollar bill instead. But before handing the homeless man the money, Bateman begins to interrogate him. The questions escalate from questions of genuine curiosity such as: “is this (a five dollar bill) what you need?”(p. 135 l. 6) into rude questions:” If you’re so hungry, why don’t you get a job?” — “I lost my job” — “Why? .. Were you drinking? Is that why you lost it? Insider trading? Just joking. No, really. Were you drinking on the job?”. (p. 135 ll. 13-19). The homeless man keeps telling Bateman that he is hungry and cold, but instead of feeling empathy for his situation, Bateman finds his behaviour irritating. “I know that, I know that … Jeez you’re like a broken record. I’m trying to help you” (p. 135 ll. 31-32). Bateman then begins to feel annoyed by the homeless man, and insults him by telling him that he reeks of excreta and ends...

...Social Problem Paper Homelessness and Poverty in the Midwest Sarah Rose Conklin Social Problems Spring Semester, 2010 Defiance College Submitted to: Alesia Yakos-Brown Date of submission: 4/27/10 Mahatma Ghandi once stated “Poverty is the worst form of violence”, this was true when Ghandi first stated this and it is still true in society today. Worldwide there is estimated to be at least 3.5 billion people who are living in poverty daily (Mooney, Knox, & Schacht,2009, pp. 212). That is around 1/5 of the world’s population (Sachs, 2005, pp. 289) It is estimated that 2.5 billion of these people are living on less than two dollars a day and the other one billion are living on less than one dollar a day (Mooney,Knox, & Schacht,2009, pp. 212). It isn’t fair for any person or family to live on such a small amount of money; and because of the high poverty level at least 18% of the world’s population goes hungry daily, that is every one in five people who go hungry (Mooney,Knox, & Schacht,2009, pp. 212). In 2008 it was reported that there were 1.5 million Ohioans’[people from Ohio] living below the national poverty level (Toledo Blade, 2010). In 2009 the U.S. census bureau reported that the population of Ohio is at 11,542,645 people (U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division , 2010), therefore it would put the number of people living below the poverty threshold at about 8% of Ohio’s population. When looking a social problem it may be beneficial to look at the...

...the Homeless Kathi Chambliss May 14, 2012 BSHS/442 Anita Payne The population I choose was the homeless. I have a lot of compassion for the homeless because of how people perceive them as being lazy, drug addicts, or alcoholics. Because of the economic state of the nation today there is a significant rise in middle class homelessness. (Caldwell, 2012). Even though a large portion of the homeless suffer from psychological issues, lack of food, no job training making most of the homeless unemployable, no housing, no medical care, and have criminal backgrounds, they are still considered human beings, should be offered rehabilitation programs, and easier ways to obtain medications for psychological issues. A large percentage of the homeless suffer from psychological problems. Another problem is in most cities the center that treats indigent psychological problems is usually located in the downtown sections and the homeless cannot get transportation to and from the centers. This makes it hard to get treated for the psychological problems and this causes the person to be unemployable. The homeless need an interested party to negotiate in his or her behalf on matters of conflict or legal matters. Since there are so many areas that the homeless need help dealing with it takes a person who knows the system, where the resources are, and how to use them to advocate in their behalf. Another alarming issue concerning this population is more than 40% of the current homeless population...

...Although there is so many issues throughout the world that can be fixed, I would like to focus on the world issue homelessness. According to enotes.com there are two main reasons why homelessness is a problem. One is that homeless people are causing harm to themselves and the environment. The second one is that homeless people are more likely to encounter more problems than those who are not homeless. I agree with this source, because most of the people who are homeless tend to get into negative situations. These situations can be from stealing, doing drugs, breaking and entering, and the worst of them all murdering. With this going around it is difficult for people to try and help the homeless. Yes, do not get me wrong there are those that do nothing but help; but for some it just...

...day there are many homeless men, women, and children who wake up every morning on an empty stomach wondering whether or not when they are going to get their next meal that day, wondering where they’re going to sleep if the homeless shelter is out of room that night, wondering if everything will be ok and that things will work out. Homelessness is an issue in america that is getting bigger and bigger, there are 564,708 homeless people in the united states alone and over 100 million total in the world. Although many americans take time out of their day to care for the people who are in need and homeless, but for every american that does do this deed there are far more americans that do not. ...Welcome ladies and gentlemen. I would just like to thank each and every individual to night for supporting my dream on diminishing the amount of homeless people in the world. Now that we have change the amount of our fellow americans in the streets begging for food but i want to introduce a topic that ties into being homeless. This topic is the amount of people who go without eating everyday. I understand this will not be intractable process. I understand it will take time but if we can just take a little consideration for those who are not blessed with others may have and make their day by giving them a dollar or two. Sometimes people go through things others might not or don’t understand. People don't choose when they next meal is. In fact most people who don’t have enough food aren't just naive or disabled. In fact , studies show that those who go without a meal twenty percent of the time are children . It necessarily doesn't have to be money. It can be things such as old canned goods that we may not want or be using but don’t get me wrong money helps just as much as food....

...survive one day at a time. 17% of the world is homeless that means out of the 7.3 billion people recored in the world over a billion of them are homeless. that makes up more then half of the united state population. though some were never educated and some where just put in a hard spot they all ended up in the same place, on the street. I asked one man, on the corner of highland and sam cooper why he's out here. He told me with a smile,” i'm working so I can eat.” Which got me interested? I was curious, why he was smiling. To have nothing, and be begging for money how could someone be so happy, but then Tyrone (the man from the corner) and I got into a deeper conversation; Tyrone told me he was my age once ,and he thought, he could take on the world. He said,” school wasn't for me and I had a bad hand dealt when I was younger,” with his father out of the picture and him the oldest of five siblings he knew he had to take the reins. With no education and job back round you ask what did he do. He did what any man would do he provided any way he could which took him down some long dark road. He stated he was in and out of jail and eventually his mother didn't want anything to do with him till he got back to who Tyrone truly was. So hearing hard news like that he went back to what he knows best the hustle. Then it took one time he said. He had one near death experience that made him realize that he had to do something other then this if he wants to see his family. So he dropped the hustling...

...It has become the new normal in the Portland area to see homeless people’s tents, tarps, and other methods of shelters littering the area. This is an issue and people here obviously need to live somewhere but the city of Portland especially is being trashed. I decided to look further into how other people view the situation. After speaking with three different police officers, I can come to the conclusion that police are anti homeless. They have little sympathy for the homeless population and I am left to assume this response from them is formed because police are people who deal with homeless daily and how some of them just don't want help. It should be mentioned some people want to change and there are programs to help them if they want too....

...publicity so, they can became famous over the internet. In this picture of a homeless guy in Times Square New York, shows a homeless man with a police officer right next to him. By the police officer doing this deed, makes the law enforcement look better. Also for the police officer, people label him as a hero and not a person just trying to look good in the eyes of the public. In this visual it shows a cop doing a good deed to get publicity. In the picture the homeless man is wearing raggedy clothes because his pants are all ripped up at the bottom. It is winter time because he has a winter coat on and so does the police officer. People that are unhoused usually only have one pair of clothing and it’s the one they are wearing also, don’t have many possessions because everything that they have travels with them. Usually homeless people carry everything they own in a book bag or a shopping cart. In the picture a pair of boots is next to the homeless man and the police officer is kneeling down next to him. The officer is looking right at him with his hands in front of the homeless man, showing the man that he won’t hurt him. ...temporary or emergency basis. Persons whose primary nighttime place of abode is a supervised publicly or privately operated shelter designed to provide temporary living accommodations, including shelters for victims of domestic violence, welfare hotels, congregate shelters, and transitional housing. Why homelessness is a problem. No one really knows why but many factors can cause one to become homeless. Losing one’s job, becoming ill, and a lack of affordable housing can all play a major role in ones becoming homeless. What exactly does it mean to be homeless? Webster’s Dictionary defines the word homeless as having no home or permanent place of residence. To the conflict theorist social class is extremely important in this perspective for it defines your place in the pyramid of power. Resources are limited greatly in society and people are constantly in competition for these resources. Conflict theorists approach the issue of homelessness just like a master approaches his servants. They see the homeless as people that are too stupid and unable to climb up the social ladder to achieve higher social status. Conflict theorists see themselves as the elite class and think of the homeless as persons that roam around doing nothing because they are incapable of really doing anything. Basically the conflict theorists view themselves as the ones with all the power in political, economic and social resources. The higher...
