Users can share photos, play games, search for friends or old acquaintances, promote a business or cause, and communicate with people almost anywhere in the world. Amazingly, it’s all free. There are many reasons for individual people to enjoy the use of social media networks. Facebook’s popularity can be attributed to its unique capabilities to facilitate connections through the internet: by fulfilling a human need for us to connect with likeminded people, building genuine relationships, and making us feel good.
One of the best things about Facebook is that people have the opportunity to express themselves, be genuine, and reveal information about themselves others may not be aware of.
People share information online that they normally would not discuss with someone in person. Some people show more courage in putting themselves “out there” online, from the security of their homes, than they would face to face with someone for fear of being judged. On Facebook, the audience is not limited to just a few people gathered together having a discussion. Depending on your security settings, anyone in the world might be able to read your post, so you feel free to share what’s on your mind. Communication is part of human nature, we are

Myspace’s strategy was getting more profit by concentrate on a few developed markets, since it owned by a public company and had a hard pressure of profitability. However, Facebook was a private company at the beginning and get some investment from investment group, so it didn’t have the pressure to make a lot of profit and revenue. For this assignment I choose the 3 main social networking sites available today; Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn. Facebook - Facebook is a social networking site that was first launched in 2004. (Eldon, 2008) Facebook is definitely the number one site throughout the globe when it comes to social networking. Through the years Facebook has had some tough competition and has seen many ups and down’s from various lawsuits, but it is still arguably the most popular social networking site used today. (Facebook, 2012) Marketing Opportunity - This site would be an exceptional marketing opportunity to market clothing to college students across the globe or around the world. This would be achievable because of the popularity of Facebook. As we already know, Facebook is used by many if not most of these students, so I would suggest that they branch out and try to use this opportunity. Categorization of Opportunity - Home run Risk of Opportunity - The problem with this opportunity is that it is such a popular site that the students may just want to use it to talk and associate with current and new friends...

Social Network

...Amanda de Alwis “The Social Network” is director David Fincher’s fascinating look at the birth of Facebook, and the men responsible for its creation. It is a story of entrepreneurship and theft, and of friendship and betrayal. More than anything else, it is a study of Mark Zuckerberg – Facebook’s creator, and the world’s youngest billionaire. Thrown into the mix are some intriguing concepts of greed, integrity, and property rights, elevating “The Social Network” to a critique of our culture. After being dumped by his girlfriend, Mark, at the time a student at Harvard takes revenge by setting up “Facemash.com”. By hacking into the Harvard student image directories, Mark creates a website enabling guys to rank girls based on their “hotness.” His project is wildly successful. Impressed by his work, the two Winklevoss brothers, Cameron and Tyler contact him with an idea of their own: an elite, Harvard-only online social network. But Mark, along with his friend and roommate Eduardo Saverin are not interested in creating a MySpace imitation. He takes the Winklevosses’ idea and modifies it, creating a similar website but without using any of the brothers’ code. The resulting site TheFacebook.com, instantly becomes a massive success on campus. The fact that the website was created in an university allowed it grow and develop because of the many users. This also made it a popular site in record time. The site was created on February 4, 2004. Progressing in the film, Mark appoints...

Mergers and Acquisitions

...Acquisitions Carrie Steptoe Contemporary Business/508 May 18, 2014 Facebook is one the of the nations’ leading social network sites in the United States, accumulating over one billion members since its creation back in 2004. So it really wasn’t a surprise to learn that Facebook had interest in acquiring Instagram, In April of 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram for one billion dollars, for their photo sharing mobile app. Instagram is a social network site that is an online photo and video sharing and network service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, put on digital filter to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, like Facebook. The merge between Facebook and Instagram is considered one of the largest merging tech deals to date. Some would say it was a good move for Facebook to merge with the up and coming social networking sites, because it would increase users along as keeping their loyal users, by providing new features that Instagram offers. Others observing may say Facebook acquiring Instagram was clearly a defensive move, made in order for Facebook to keep its leading spot in social media network sites, and would probably say the merge is a bad business move because of its hastiness of spending one billion dollars for a startup company with no revenue at the time. However, the two companies merging was a historical moment in business history. One reason I feel Facebook decided to acquire Instagram, is because they saw an opportunity...

...exist between network of people” (Walter & Ribiere, 2004). Today, when we talk about social networking, we think of social networking websites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, which are the top three popular social networking sites in the United States (Alexa.com, 2010). These sites are defined as web-based platforms that allow individuals to build their own profiles and reflect social relations. The users of these sites are able to “articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system” (Boyd &Ellison, 2008). Within the system, the users are able to present themselves, articulate their social networks, and establish or maintain connections with others; moreover, these social networking websites can be oriented toward different fields like work-related, romantic relationship related, interest sharing related, or student community (Ellison, Steinfield & Lampe, 2008). Mostly, users participate in these sites for interaction with their friends or meet new people. With these sites, they provide various features such as profiles, comments, private messaging, photo-sharing, and video-sharing capabilities; moreover, with the improving technology, now users are capable of using mobile phones to achieve online interactions.
