...Eating Healthy Does Not Cost More People pay more for cell phones, cable tv, and clothes. People could afford to pay more for food if eating healthy was a priority. People can eat well and healthy for less if they take the time budgeting, planning, purchasing, and cooking their own meals. For example, a family of three can get a few meals out of a $6.99 package of frozen chicken breast from Trader Joe’s. Trader Joe’s also sells bags of frozen vegetables- peas, spinach, etc. for $1.19 - $1.39; and inexpensive bags of frozen fruit such as pineapple, and mango, etc. They also sell inexpensive sauces, i.e. their Thai sauce is $2.49. A few meals for a family of three can be prepared using the $6.99 bag of frozen chicken breast for meals such as: chicken alfredo with spinach or peas, Indian curry sauce w/ chicken over rice, grilled chicken caesar salad with pita bread, a stir-fry with chicken, pineapple, sliced onion and pepper w/ soy sauce or Thai sauce over rice. Ground turkey which is cheaper and healthier than beef can be used to make chilies, tacos or turkey burgers for inexpensive dinners. Or you can go to the farmers’ market for things like Italian turkey sausage made by the Amish for your pasta meals also. You can pick up your fresh produce there too. But, you really can’t beat Trader Joe’s fresh fruit and vegetable prices, unless, they are on sale somewhere else. And, than it will only be a few cents more. So why run around? Eggs are pretty inexpensive and can be...

...Fad Diets versus Healthy Life Style Changes Valerie Heintz Fad Diets versus Healthy Life Style Changes A commitment to a lifestyle change is needed to become healthy. The following essay will help give you a better understanding of why fad diets are not the answer for becoming healthy. Most fad diets and healthy lifestyle changes are both based on reducing the number calories that you take in every day. Unlike healthy lifestyle changes fad diets usually recommend severely reducing the number of calories below the recommend daily amount. According to the Medical New Today website http://www.medicalnewstoday.com, the average adult male should consume approximately 2,500 calories a day to maintain his weight and 2,000 calories for an average adult female. These numbers can change depending on age, gender and the amount of physical activity a person performs daily. In the past I have gone on several fad diets that were asking you to reduce your calorie intake to as low as 600 calories a day, way below the recommended amount. Yes you will reduce your weight quickly, but you will also be losing muscle tone as well and as soon as you increase your calorie intake the weight will come back on. Some fad diets have you eliminate certain foods from your diets. For instance the South Beach diet wants you to eliminate certain fruits like pineapples, watermelon, and raisins because they are higher in sugar. On the Medifast Diet they are asking you to eat 5 of their Medifast products...

...SCI/241 Sunday-April 1, 2012 Kerri Kislin Tracking food intakes is essential to determine if a person is consuming adequate nutrients over periods. Tracking intakes helps to get on track and stay on track with healthy nutritional diets. Keeping track helps to determine if adjustments made to the diet are sufficient to achieve optimal nutrient amounts. After making the adjustments a food intake tracker will help to determine if more adjustments need made later or if I am on the right track. A food diary is an excellent way to track food intakes and calorie intakes. I input my food intakes from Monday to Wednesday and compared them with a previous intake analysis from six weeks ago. The new analysis was encouraging, my nutritional intakes improved drastically especially in the area of protein which was a previous struggle. My vegetable intake has increased to a good level; my whole grain intake has increased to a good level, and my protein intake increased. The new analysis did still show a need for improvement in dairy and fruit. My weekly intake of dairy and fruit has improved however, my daily intakes are still lacking. I need to work to find alternates methods of receiving adequate dairy intakes such as supplements, purchasing soymilk, or yogurts. I also need to continue to work at including fruit in my daily diet, I can grab an apple or banana with my breakfast bar I take to work with me. I purchased kiwi for...

...Insects have almost the same amount of protein with a lower fat content. The author (Bobolts 2)explains, “Grasshoppers in particular are packed with about just as much protein as lean ground beef with less fat.” This means that you can have a similar amount of protein with a lot less fat. Bugs have healthier fats than traditional livestock. The author shared this statement, “Some caterpillars have more protein by weight than a turkey leg and more fat, too, but it’s a healthier monounsaturated kind.” This means you can have more healthy fats. There are several ways that insects can help with obesity. These are just a few of...

...Running Head: Change Project A COURSE PAPER SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTERS OF SCIENCE IN NURSING IN THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE TEXAS WOMAN’S UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NURSING BY Desiree McGee, RN, B.S.N HOUSTON, TEXAS June 23, 2013 Primary Target Behavior My primary target behavior is to increase my cardiovascular fitness with eating healthier and continue my exercise regimen. I chose this particular behavior to change due to my increased weight gain. I currently weigh 106 lbs at the start of this class. I was up to 110 lbs which may not sound overweight to many but at 5’0 tall and it going straight to my thighs and stomach I felt I needed to do better. Plus I had to squeeze into my clothes and others just would not fit, I went from a double zero in size to a size 1. When you are use to weighing a certain weight and your body looking a certain way it is hard to see it change. With exercise and eating healthier I know I can get my body back in shape and toned. Treatment Plan Goal: To improve my cardiovascular fitness by eating healthier and maintain an exercise regimen. Objective 1: Continue workout regimen of 3-4 days a week for 1-2 hours a day. Objective 2: To maintain a diet of increased fruits and vegetables and decrease consumption of unhealthy foods 5-10 Action Steps – Objective 1: 1. On off days continue going to the gym for 8 am group classes 2. Switch exercises to provide variety and continue motivation. Such as working...

...5 December, 2011 Factory Farms: Meatiocre Food When a person is eating a hamburger and thinks about where it came from, he or she probably imagines a healthy cow grazing in a luscious green pasture. Unfortunately, this is the present, and free-roaming animals used for their meat are a thing of the past. Today, a vast majority of the livestock and poultry purchased comes from animals that live in a small space their entire life, and never get to see the light of day. The places that house these tortured animals have come to be known as “factory farms”. In the 1920s, an astonishing discovery was made by a group of scientists – Vitamins A and D. Farmers eventually learned that if they put these two vitamins into the animals’ feed, then exercise and sunlight would not be required for these animals to grow. With factory farmers not having to let their livestock and poultry roam freely, they started to fill up the factory with as many animals as possible, and could keep their businesses running year round. However, with the tightly packed areas, diseases were plentiful. With science constantly managing to find new discoveries, scientists concocted antibiotics specifically for these diseases in the 1940s. Society is quick to jump on somebody when they treat somebody like a piece of garbage, but they simply turn their heads when this happens to animals. Farmers had found a way to increase productivity and lower operating costs and this was by using an assembly line. Basically,...

... And the only way that is possible is by losing water weight. Maybe you’ll lose a pound or two of fat by starving your body along the way. But the rest is water weight. And of course, as you re-hydrate, your weight will go right back up — but because you starved your body, your metabolism was reset! So the next time you eat food, your body will be ready to store any leftover calories as fat. And soon you’ve got more fat stored than when you started. Not good. to transform your body. 1 CONTROL your portions. Don’t eat until you are full, eat until you’re not hungry. 1 CONTROL your portions. In restaurant terms, generally, eat half what the chef serves you. An adequate portion of a meal is 3 ounces of protein (like chicken, tuna or lean ground beef) which is about the size of your palm. Don’t eat until you are full. Eat until you’re not hungry. Same goes for salad dressing; On a large salad, limit it to just enough for taste. You will be surprised how much less dressing you need to get the same flavor. Control Your Calorie Intake and Portion Size This is what we call the “Classic Calorie Equation.” Your daily exercise routine will increase the amount of calories you burn each day. If you also make sure that you eat fewer calories than you burn, “poof!”— you burn excess stored fat. It’s a simple, scientifically proven fact that never fails. And here’s how to do it: 2 QUESTION everything you eat. Fresh vegetables, skinless white meat,...

...Application of Community Health & Population-Focused Nursing Western Governors University A1. Description of Disease Avian Influenza, commonly referred to as the Bird Flu, is a highly contagious virus amongst birds (avian). These viruses occur naturally and can move quickly from wild aquatic birds to domesticated chickens, ducks and turkeys. Wild birds infected with the avian influenza virus usually do not get sick. The virus that normally infects the respiratory tract, affects wild birds intestines instead. However, our domesticated birds aren’t as fortunate and can become very ill and even die from the virus. There are two different strains of the virus: low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Poultry infected with LPAI viruses may not cause disease at, could cause mild illness or may not even be detected. On the hand, when HPAI viruses infect poultry it can cause severe disease and high mortality (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2015). According to the CDC, avian influenza outbreaks have been responsible for illness and death in humans in Asia, Africa, Europe, the Pacific and the Near East but between 1997 and 2014, the United States experienced only one incident of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry (CDC, 2015). The first bird flu case was reported in 1997 in Hong Kong and affected 18 humans, claiming the lives of six. A2. Epidemiological Determinants Although...
