...1. Working in groups is often cited as an essential part of workplace but something students often either really like or loathe as part of their course assessment. Using the information from chapters 8 & 9 of the text as a starting point, how do you explain the differences between group work at university and in the workplace and how could university group work outcomes be improved? Working with groups of people at university can be quite diverse and troublesome at times, however, understanding how people function in these groups is essential in the workplace and can save us much hassle later. Many theories have been proposed to explain the benefits of working in groups and why it is crucial in the workplace. Although the literature covers a wide variety of such theories, this review will focus on four major themes, which emerge repeatedly throughout the literature reviewed and explains the difference between group work at university and in the workplace. These themes are: why should groups be formed, the stages groups tend to go through, how do groups function effectively, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of working in a group. Although the literature presents these themes in a variety of contexts, this paper will primarily focus on their application to working in groups at university. Andrew Carnegie, a famous businessman, once said “ Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward...

...right. Doing individual work allows one to have more freedom about doing certain things. All kinds of elements come in to play here. We have the time factor first off. If an individual is very pressed for time, as most are when working for an organization, projects can be done a day in advance. Although I wouldn’t recommend this, it most certainly happens day to day among individuals. With a group or team, deadlines must be met in order to collaborate with the group, adding more pressure upon a certain individual. For instance, I’m going to relate this to school, more precisely this semester. I have a “group” project coming up in roughly two weeks. With so many other tasks going on, due before this time I might add, I don’t have time to dedicate all of my focus on this project just yet. This doesn’t concern my group members. There is no communication amongst this group, and they tell me they want the power point slides in less than a week! Doing this adds all sorts of pressure to me. And let me add one more note. I didn’t have a say in when this power point was due. Saying this brings up another important point I believe is prevalent in organizational teams today. Many group members do not get the chance to voice their opinion when in groups. While working as an individual, this problem does not come in to play. As an individual trying to complete work, for instance a presentation, that individuals ideas can stand out. That isn’t to say you don’t want input from colleagues. It...

...I believe working in a group is beneficial because students can learn from one another, learn social skills, and benefit from making new friendships. Working in groups helps students learn from one another. Students learn better social skills by working together. Making new friends is another positive that comes from working together in groups. Students can better understand things by working in a group and getting help from other students. Students can be put in a situation where they do not know how to talk to people. Students could be put into a class with none of their friends. A student might be doing something a really complicated way and another student do the same thing just a shorter way. By working in a group, students are...

...Paper # 3 Groups When considering how to handle topics or problems, it is important to understand that there are different ways of reaching the end result and both must be evaluated equally. What are the benefits and shortfalls of working on it alone versus working on the situation with a group? After asking this question, it is important to take into consideration the time restrictions, the difficulty of the problem or issue, as well as the impacts of the result. Groups have both potential limitations as well as strengths. Objectives can vary drastically and those you are in a group with can quickly impact the group as a whole. To look at the potential limitations of a group, "there are two significant disadvantages of group discussions and it includes the time it takes for the group process as well as the potential of conformity pressures to interfere with high quality decision making." Operating in a solo manner can allow for thinking through ideas efficiently, where with a group each person is allowed to speak and others to respond. (page 235 Comm. 203 Wood) When you understand that each individual with get the opportunity to voice their thoughts, it is important to remember that some group members may have more to say than another individual. This may show that some group members are suppressing their thoughts or that the stronger opinions, may encourage conformity. This certainly would not be beneficial to the group and would not fall into the category of strength...

...Working in a group setting can be uncomfortable, and many people prefer the good ol “if you want anything done right, you have to do it yourself” attitude. But while there are comforts in working alone, and at your pace, there are many advantages to working in a group setting. Instead of the do it yourself attitude, have the “two minds are greater than one” attitude. If two minds are greater than one, imagine three minds, or four, or more. At one point in my life, I worked as the manager of an Information Technology Division. My job consisted of managing an IT team within a school district. Since my team and I did not work in the same office, I wanted to devise a plan where I could keep in touch with the members of my team, and what obstacles...

...Working in Groups and Teams 2015 Working in Groups and Teams Upon completing the self-assessment “Evaluate Team Members Effectiveness”, the results were as I expected and allow me to see where improvement of my team member effectiveness is needed. Though I am not bragging, I do have many strengths when it comes to working in a team, however, those strengths have been developed over many years of working in a team environment, and there are a few places that need improvement still. Although” social loafing” is not something I believe I have ever been guilty of, though that could be my perception of my actions, but I have always been one to push to meet the goals set in front of the team. This also allows us to put our best foot forward so to speak and allows us to work effectively in team environments, either on the job or in class. Team development in the work environment can give clear advantages to workers, especially if they are effective team members. Self-Assessment The completing of the “Evaluate Team Members Effectiveness” self-assessment yielded results that were not surprising to me. It is important to me to contribute as much as possible to my teams’ efforts to complete a job or assignment. In order to do this there has to be quality interaction with my teammates and that interaction must be quality interaction to help with the assignment and keep us on track. Seeing the results of the self-assessment did make me realize that I need to trust my teams’ abilities...

...A chain is just as strong as its weakest link. A group is just as strong as its weakest member. The negative of working in a team outweigh the positives of working in a group. Working alone is better than working in a team because it is easier to manage, also because you won’t need to compromise your own ideas for others. Working alone, rather than in a team allows for easy management of the group. One reason why management is easier is because you have only yourself to manage. You can control what you do, when you do it, and the effort you put in. For example, this removes the constant need to get updated on your group members whilst working on a project. Another reason why working alone is better than working with others is because you are...

...Do you like working in groups? I believe that working in groups is a good idea. It is a good idea because when you work in groups everyone can help everyone. Also, when someone is not doing what they are supposed to be, they have many people to help them out. Another reason is that when you are working in a group, you can get the work done way faster than if you were working alone. I think working in groups is a good idea because everyone can help everyone, when someone is not doing they are supposed to do, they have people to help them, and you can work faster when you work in a group than when you work by yourself. Associate pride and our “orangeblooded” entrepreneurial spirit are distinctive hallmarks of our culture. 1. Taking care of our people: The key to our success is treating people well. ...Compare social groups: (Example: differences between racial/ethnic minority groups, along with their comparison to whites). Does race and sex play a role in shaping the life chances of people entering into and working in your intended career path? In what ways may sex and race impact your life as a professional? What are the possible causes of these inequalities? The correlation of success with gender and ethnicity has always been and will always be a matter of debate. It is commonly claimed that differences exist among people belonging to different minority groups and when it come to gender, men are considered more privileged than women. In reality, statistics do support such assumptions; however, they do not explain the factors driving such preferential behaviors. In this essay, besides displaying some statistical data, I would go a bit further into analyzing the reasons of such patterns. The hiring process, although seemingly easy, is very complicated and entails several complex relationships. There are several perceived disadvantages of women or minority groups when it comes to employment. In the past 20 years, through affirmative action policies, men and women have been encouraged to enter non-traditional areas. However, the removal of legal barriers has not eliminated all obstacles faced by them. According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, there were 28,372 charges of sex-based discrimination in 2008. Also, data collected from the American Community...
