Writing a Resume

Having a job has been a huge necessity in today’s economy. If you don’t have a job you can’t live, eat, or do anything you want with your life. There are several things you need to have before you can obtain a job in today’s economy. You have to have some type of schooling, job experience, know how, and a great resume. Without a resume you can’t get the job you want and should have. You might be asking yourself “How do I write a resume and why is it important to have one.” Well you need a resume to get that job of your dreams and I will show you how to get that job with an exceptional resume.

The type of resume I am going to teach you is called a functional resume. When you start your resume always start by changing the font to Times New Roman and the size should be 12. The first item you should time on your resume is your name, then your address, after that your phone number, and lastly an email address. The biggest no-no you must remember is to never write the word resume on the top of the page. You don’t need the word there because the interviewer already knows it’s your resume. Trust me I did this and the guy said have a nice day. Having just your name, address, number, and email establishes who you are and how you present yourself.

The next step is to write down your education history. You want to list your education in chronological order. Any time you list anything you start with the most recent. You must include all apprenticeship programs, college degrees, and any and all trade schools you ever attended. If you have graduated with a degree you must list the schools name were you received the degree from, the type of degree, and when you graduated, also if you finished with a GPA of 3.5 you must put it next to the degrees name. If you haven’t finished college then you list everything the same but instead put down how long you have been in the school and a projected time of graduation. Once you have finished listing your schooling next will be your awards and achievements. What I mean by this is like a president’s award or dean’s list. Also like for me I have letters from when I did tailgate galas and special events. These are the things you want to list here along with any other achievements. You must list the name of the award, date it was given, and what the award was for. This is your chance to show what you are made of and what you can do.

Once you have finished up with your awards and achievements you are half way done. The third section is a list of your special skills. Here you don’t want to say a lot. All this section is a few words about you. Words like team player, hard worker, and dedicated just to list a few. You don’t want to add a lot of words here. My suggestion is to list 5 to 6 and leave it at that because if you list too many then the interviewer may think you’re full of it. The last step of your resume is your employment history. Here it’s simple and easy. All you have to do is list the name of the company, your position, the address of the company, your boss’s name, date you were working there, a detailed description of what your responsibilities were, and why you left. I would add references after this but make sure they are people you worked with or did jobs with. Never list a family member as a reference. You must list their name, address, number, and what their job is so they can be contacted for questions about you and your performance.

Now you have a complete resume. Remember to be thorough and truthful and you should never go wrong. Always keep it to the point and never too much under your special skills part. I promise if you follow this to the T, maybe add a twist you should have no problem getting that job. Show your talents and they will prove your right for the job.

...Writing a Resume Your resume isn’t your autobiography. It’s a short document, meant to show an employer that you’re a desirable candidate for an available job. Writing an effective resume presents you as a well-qualified, interesting individual who is worthy of a face-to-face interview. Employers may receive over 100 resumes for a single job opening. While ideally each candidate would receive equal time, the fact is that employers typically sort through a pile and put the most appealing specimens at the top of the heap. Statistically, your resume has about ten to twenty seconds to either float to the top (for further analysis) or sink to the bottom (obscurity in the employer’s personnel files). Steps to Writing a Resume Gathering Information Whether you’re writing a resume for one employer or several, the job of writing a resume is much easier when you take the time to put all of your information in front of you. Besides that, putting all of your information in one place gives you a handy reference to make sure that each resume you write has all the information you want to disclose to prospective employers. It also makes updating and writing new resumes easier than starting from scratch. Resumes are divided into three sections: experience, skills, and education. Using these sections, brainstorm a list of all the data that might be pertinent to getting the job you want now and jobs you may consider in the future. If you’re writing a resume...

...The first three years of my post academic career were spent sourcing consultants for boutique agencies whose client lists were made up of fortune 500 companies; key players in their individual industries. Although many of the professionals that I placed in their positions were high level software engineers, web developers, or security analysts, one particular job description consistently caught my attention; Project Management. When I was faced with the opportunity to choose the Master’s program that I would like to pursue; I took my time considering the various options. After reviewing my day to day responsibilities, short and long term goals, and where my overall passions lie, it was clear to me that I was looking for a program that would develop my key competencies regardless of the circumstance, position, or industry that my future may hold. The Project Management Institute states, “PMI credentials certify your knowledge and experience in project management so you can be more confident at work and more competitive in the job market”, a statement that touches the core components that I am looking for in a Master’s program. My current position as an Admission’s Recruiter at Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies enables me to take on many Project Management responsibilities within our Admission’s team. I am expected to develop project plans and timelines while taking into consideration each program’s priorities, deadlines, and budget. Because my position...

How to Write a Resume

...! ! Andrea Sanchez Professor Peter Wegner English 301 12 August 2013 ! ! ! ! ! “How to Write A Resume”! Do you want a job but not sure where to start ? You will need to know how to write a resume that is effective and will give the results you want. Let’s start off with determining what the purpose of a resume is. The purpose is to obtain a interview and ultimately get a job or internship. It is very important to be selective in the information you place in your resume and include details that are only relevant to the employer and the position. Avoid using pronouns and articles (a, an, the) whenever possible. ! The formatting of a resume is important and provides the information needed in a logical, easy to read sequence. When using underlines, italics, bold, and all caps it helps guide the employer through the resume with ease. A key word is consistency which makes the information on the resume simple for the employers to read. Including personal information is a highlight in your resume. The employer wants to know your name, address, phone number, and email address on the top of the first page of your resume. Personal information such as religion, age, political affiliation, and martial status are not included on a resume. There are considered illegal questions for the employers to ask. ! ...By: Bryan Choong Kok Loon The career talk that I had attended is ‘Resume Writing and Interview Preparation’ by PWC. Based on my personal opinion, the career talk was quite knowledgeable and interesting as it helps me to prepare myself when I’m in the working industry. Resume is basically an introduction of myself to let the employer know about me. There’s a few pros and cons about the career talk that I had attended. First is the person giving the speech is very good and detailed. She gives every single detail about how to write a good and simple resume. She even showed a few example of good resumes and bad resumes so that we would get the rough idea of how to write a good resume. She guided and showed everyone step by step from writing a good resume to get our resume accepted by the company. Besides that, she showed us the formats of resume and other good information that we could use for writing a good resume. She also did a simple role-play with us, students, on how a normal interview would be and guided us on how to attract the employers attention. I’ve learnt a lot of good and interesting points that would help me in the future when I’m writing a resume and going for an interview. She even pointed out that we should always keep in mind to be friendly to anyone we see when we are going for an interview because we might not know if they are the employer that’s going to interview us. An interview is a step closer to getting a...

Writeing Errors Job Aplacation

...“Writing errors, such as those identified in the readings for this week, may influence the way a reader interprets your writing.  A résumé that is marred by grammatical errors, for example, may prevent a job candidate from progressing to the interview stage. Do you think it is appropriate for people to be judged based on their writing? Explain your answer.” In the case of a resume that is marred by grammatical errors, to a point it is appropriate to judge the individual as it can be considered an indication of his or her professionalism. However; if the resume is for a position that does not require any ability to communicate through writing it should considered only as it relates to the position. I believe this is not the way that most potential employers feel as I have written before that I believe that any resume that is written with grammatical errors will at the very least end up at the bottom of the pile. This is because most employers believe a resume that is marred by grammatical errors is not on an indication of unprofessional grammar; it is also an indication of the individual’s ability to communicate. Some may even believe it is an indication of the individual’s intelligence level. I have written before that I believe most individuals believe that if one has gremial errors in there writing , so too will there be errors in there speech. For example if one were to write “I am submitting my resume”. The reader may believe the individual that wrote the passage would...
