...For instance, the movie introduced the idea of a good lie while Mamare was in his class. In Huckleberry Finn, Finn lied about not seeing a slave, when he, in fact, did. Finn told that lie in order to protect his African American friend since if he told the truth, Finn’s friend would be hurt or killed. The movie progresses and sets up for a good lie of its own. Upon discovering the possibility of Theo being alive, Mamare returned to Kenya, to the refugee camp, in order to find his older brother. When Mamare was reunited with his older brother, he commenced his task of obtaining a visa for Theo from any embassy on good standings with the U.S. After 9/11, the U.S. cut the visa program with Muslim nations that could have ties with terrorist groups, one of which was Sudan even though the refugees from Sudan were mostly Christians fleeing persecution from Muslim attackers. Mamare was not having any luck with getting a visa for Theo, but when Theo asked, Mamare said that he obtained one. This is a good lie, if Mamare told the truth to Theo, it would only cause distress in Theo since he and Mamare were leaving for the U.S soon. Finally, the ultimate example of a good lie was towards the end of the movie. In the line for security, Mamare quickly told that Theo from that point forth was to be “Mamare.” In Mamare’s mind, Theo gave him life after switching...

...Good Stewardship Today Means a Brighter Future Good stewardship over the limited resources that have been entrusted to us today can have a long-lasting impact. Not only is it important for someone to be able to recognize when they have poor financial habits, it is even more important to educate someone to achieve financial freedom. It’s easy to follow our inclination toward acquiring “stuff.” However, when we are obsessed with stuff, we miss what’s really important and end up struggling financially and emotionally. Financial bondage is a serious problem that is easy to get into; getting out is much harder. First, children and young adults should be taught at a young age to manage their finances. I believe young adults (including Dalat students)...

...AN EXAMPLE OF HOW TO WRITE AN ESSAY What is the difference between a low-context culture and a high-context culture? Give an example of a country that is an example of each type, and provide evidence for your answer. ANSWER E. Hall has suggested the concept of high and low context as a way of understanding different cultural orientations. In a low-context culture, messages are explicit; words carry most of the information in communication. In a high-context culture, less information is contained in the verbal part of a message. Much more information resides in the context of communication, including the background, associations, and basic values of the communicators. In general, high-context cultures function with much less legal paperwork than is deemed essential in low-context cultures. Japan, Saudi Arabia, and other high-context cultures place a great deal of emphasis on a person's values and position or place in society. In such cultures, a business loan is more likely to be based on who you are than on formal analysis of pro forma financial documents. In a lowcontext culture such as the United States, Switzerland, or Germany, deals are made with much less information about the character, the back-ground, and the values of the participants. Much more reliance is placed on the words and numbers in the loan application. In a high-context culture, a person's word is his or her bond. There is less need to anticipate contingencies and provide for external legal sanctions because...

...Ms. St. Clair p.2-C14089 Important Reading Skills The essay “Good Readers and Good Writers” written by Vladimir Nabokov was written to convince others that a great reader incorporates art and imagination to comprehend the written word in an intellectual way. He works with rhetorical questions and allusions to question the reader and to offer a better understanding of why it is important to create original ideas from stories for their readers. Without the use of allusions and rhetorical questions, Nabakov’s approach would be less effective for without the use of these styles, the reader would perhaps feel “lectured to” instead of instead being drawn into and involved into the points Nabakov is making. Vladimir Nabokov states his idea on how...

...Previous Good Conduct Essay Question: Describe your feelings towards an important character in one text. Explain, giving detailed reasons, why you felt this way. In the short story Previous Good Conduct, written by author Ruth Thomas, the protagonist stands out particularly; that is the character of the mother left at home to look after the children. She is portrayed as a woman who holds very peculiar views and her actions and thoughts are quite unreasonable. There are three important parts to the short story that are relative to the protagonist. These are: the first few sentences that show her initial attitude to life, the flashbacks that show her negative views towards her children and lastly the way in which she convinces herself of the reasoning behind her actions. In the first part of the short story, Previous Good Conduct, the protagonist’s attitude towards life seems very blasé. She is also painted as a person that deals with her emotions by hurting others, such as her nearly four year old son Bobby. She seems blasé because in the first few sentences, her living area is described as very untidy and it seems unrealistic that a mother would ignore the mess and her children. It is untidy because there were ‘cornflakes crunching under her slippers’, ‘a trickle of milk running down the leg of the highchair’, and a ‘nappy resting where she had dropped it’. The protagonist doesn’t seem to be doing anything during this time, other than surveying the scene. The reader first...

...Essay on “A Good Night’s Sleep” You know the feeling. You went to bed three hours ago, and yet you have not fallen asleep. Panic is starting to take control of your mind and the darkness seems like a never-ending struggle. It feels as if you are being choked. It all starts out as tiny, red dots. In the beginning they are nothing but dots. When you notice how harmless they are, they start forming patterns. Suddenly they are everywhere. Among all the red dots monsters start appearing. Your biggest fear is approaching you and there is nothing you can do to stop the horror. A skinny arm of an abandoned child reaches out to touch you and in that very moment – you awake. You are all sweaty and frightened. You know, you have not been sleeping nor been awake. You have been drifting off to sleep and started hallucinating. Just as George Lockhart from the story you have just read. “A Good Night’s Sleep” is a Scottish short story written by Brian McCabe and published in 1993. The story takes place in a tenement building in Edinburgh. The place of action is on the third floor where George Lockhart, the main character, lives. I think the social environment is middleclass. The people living in the building are at all ages and appearances. The story being told from an apartment creates a sense of claustrophobia, which does not get any less when you are told about the noises from the street. The short story is being told from a third person omniscient narrative. It seems as a very reliable...

... Two thirds of american adults are currently overweight. That’s millions and millions of people who are at a greater risk of health effects such as heart disease or type 2 diabetes. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death killing over 500,000 people in one year. There is obviously something that has to be done about America’s problem with overweight or obese conditions. Dieting and exercise can be hard for many people who are busy or just to lazy; this is where diet pills come in. Could they be the perfect solution for America’s weight problem? Pills and medication for dieting are fairly new. In the 1950’s and 60’s, people took pills to reduce appetite such as amphetamines. These worked fairly well because why eat if you aren't hungry? More drugs used until about the mid-1990’s were fenphen and dexfenfluramine. These drugs helped people struggling with weight shed the pounds easier and worked well for most people. The down side was that sometimes these drugs caused paranoia (amphetamines) or heart valve disease (fenphen and dexfenfluramine). Most weight-loss drugs work by altering metabolism, changing appetites of the user, or, just simply, burning the fat. The FDA (Federal Drug Administration) has started to monitor the use of weight loss drugs as they become more and more popular. They have approved some and put limits on how long many can be taken safely. There is now a new problem arising for weight loss drugs, are they safe, or not? Many people...

...“No Snitch” does No Good Sitting across the desk from me was a police investigator who had tears welled up in his eyes. He didn’t know what to do because he was working a case in which a child was sexually abused, but neither parent was cooperating with investigators. My heart sank. Because without witnesses, there was no telling if and when the abuse might stop. I’d like to tell you that this situation happened to me only once as a prosecutor, but sadly, that feeling of disappointment and despair was all too familiar. I had many cases where the only thing standing between a criminal and a conviction was an uncooperative witness. There was the murder of a 19-year-old college student who was the victim of a drive by shooting. Right car, wrong person....

...Every Good Boy Many people struggle with finding your identity and finding that one thing that you supposedly have a talent for. That is one of the themes David Nicholls presents in the short story Every Good Boy, which is about a young man who gets pressured by his family to find his talent. One day his father comes home and he has brought a big piano with him. His intentions with the piano, is that the boy is going to play it. The father keeps telling him, that everybody has a talent, and with a sister who is a gifted and influential majorette and an older brother, who can dismantle things, there gets developed expectations for him. So he starts taking piano-lessons with Mrs Chin, who lives across the streets. He practice very Thursday for an hour, but there still isn’t any improvement, and Mrs Chin is about to give up, and gets more and more frustrated with him. She keeps telling him that he will be the death of her and that her head is about to burst. One day while playing “The entertainer” by Scott Joplin, Mrs Chin dies and the boy begins to clean up, so it doesn’t seem as he was there when she died. He can’t endure the thought that everybody is going to know that he killed her with his terrible piano playing. It appears clearly that the author presents the theme by showing how the narrator struggles with finding his identity, and with all the pressure around him, it makes it even harder. It’s a typical situation for human beings, to be at a place in life where...

...What makes a good leader? Leadership development Ever since we started Impact Factory, lo these many years ago, we have struggled with the whole notion of leadership development or leadership training. Indeed, we have resisted writing about it in much detail because the subject is so subjective. Are leaders born or made? Can you use management leadership training to give leadership skills to someone who isn't leadership material? How is it done? Given that we're being asked to create a lot more leadership programmes of late, we decided we'd take a hard look at just what makes a good leader. Even of you don't think of yourself as a leader, you will have areas in your life where other people look to you for leadership. So here are some essentials...

...The strong and powerful leader, Odysseus, was he really a good leader to his crew? Or did he ultimately lead to all his men's fait of death? Along Odysseus and the crews journey back home to Ithaca, their was many obstacles put fourth ahead of them. But these obstacles would have not been put in place if Odysseus would have not made Poseidon mad in the first place. Due to Odysseus's conflict the crew had to suffer and pay the consequences, because he only cared about himself, and when It came to times where the crew needed his help, he choose to not help them so that he could move farther along. With this being said Odysseus was not a strong leader and ultimately contributed to the destruction of his own men. For example, in the story Charybdis/sirens, Odysseus chose to face Charybdis and sacrifice six of his best men, while being taken away by Charybdis they shouted out to Odysseus for his help, but he did nothing, he did not even make an attempt to help them. He just moved along with the journey. A good leader would have at least tried to help save his crew members from being taken away to their death but he did not. In another part of the story called Island of Aeolia, Odysseus receives help from a god and is gifted with a bag of wind which would lead them back to...
