How Can We Create a Shared World in Our Class Room?

As Instructor Erde wrote this question on the board I looked around the classroom and noticed that just about everyone in the room comes from different cultural backgrounds. At this point I wondered what I could learn from each one of my classmates about their culture. The way I feel that we can create a shared world in our classroom is that everyone can make a dish of their favorite food from their cultural background and then tell the class how this dish became part of their culture.
This is would be my shared piece: My name is Diann. I am African-American and I’m from a small southern town in Virginia named South Hill. Today I will tell you how chitterlings became a favorite dish amongst the African American people. Chitterlings are one of my favorite foods. They are also pronounced chitlins. Chitterlings are the small intestines of a pig. This dish is traditionally made during the holiday seasons. Chitterlings became a popular dish for the African-American people during the slavery era. The slave owners would feed their slaves in the cheapest way. In December when the pigs was slaughtered the slave owners would keep the prime meat of the pig and the remains would be given to the slaves. The part of the pig that the slaves would get was the ears, feet, fatback, snout and the intestines. Chitterlings take a while to cook and clean and yes they do stink while they are cooking unless you put an onion or potato in the pot to take away the smell. I must say when they’re done, they’re good! I’m very thankful to my ancestors for keeping Chitterlings a traditional dish among the African American
