Others never even smoked but are prone to the same illnesses as the smokers. Recent studies show that there is an intense need for effective smoking cessation programs on campus. Among all smokers, the prevalence by age is highest among college-age people (ages 18-24). The annual prevalence of tobacco use among all smokers since 1990 has remained virtually unchanged, meaning that other age groups are decreasing tobacco use, while college students are smoking at a greater rate. Tobacco causes disease and premature death in nonsmoking as well as smoking adults. In the United States, secondhand smoke is thought to cause about 46,000 heart disease deaths each year. Of all smokers, one in three will die prematurely from tobacco use. One step colleges and universities can take to reduce smoking among students is by making campuses smoke-free. Purpose and Scope The goal of this report...

...Historical Context Tobacco one of the major leading causes of preventable and premature death, accounting for an estimated 443,000 American deaths in the United States each year or one out of every five deaths. These deaths are due to preventable conditions such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, and lung diseases including emphysema, pneumonia, and chronic airway obstruction. No other risky, self-indulgent addictive behaviors directly endanger bystanders as much as cigarette smoking or tobacco use endangers nonsmokers through secondhand tobacco smoke or inhaled environmental tobacco smoke (Oriona, 2009). According to the Center for Disease Control nearly 24.6% high school students have used at least some type of tobacco product. More than 80% of adult smokers begin smoking by 18 years of age with 99% of first use by 26 years of age. In...

...Argument Essay In the fall of 2007, the University of Mississippi adopted the “Tobacco Use Policy”. This policy was designed to limit the use of tobacco products on the Ole Miss campus to “designated tobacco-use areas.” It became evident over time that the policy was not effective and added to the growing concerns on campus over continuing exposure to second hand smoke. This led to discussions between students and faculty and staff alike about becoming a smoke free campus. In the early fall of 2011, the Vice Chancellor’s Office for Student Affairs began to solicit feedback from various constituencies on campus to determine whether or not there was broad support for such an effort. During the following fall semester, a proposal for a smoke-free campus received support from the Provost’s Office, the Academic Deans, all 14 departments within the Division of Student Affairs, The Executive Director of the Alumni Association, the ASB Senate, and the ASB President. In the spring of 2012, the proposal received support from the Faculty Senate and the Staff Council. During the spring semester, the ASB Senate passed a formal resolution supporting the implementation of a Smoke-Free Policy on the Ole Miss campus. With such campus wide support evident, Chancellor Dan Jones asked Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Larry Ridgeway to call together a “Smoke-Free Campus Policy Implementation Committee”. The committee convened for the first time on May 7, 2012 and met regularly throughout that...

...Resident Association Date: September 28, 2015 ------------------------------------------------- Re: Implementing Smoke-free environment The purpose of this memorandum is to recommend the implementation of a smoke-free living environment at the Rialto-Capitol Condominium. As you know, last year the Tower Grand was the latest residency opened here at The Beacon and the first to be a smoke-free living environment on campus grounds. Second hand smoke is harmful and hazardous to the health of the general public. It is the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke exhaled by smokers (1). The U.S. has attempted to reduce the use of tobacco by eliminating its use in public places, including bars, restaurants and parks. However, one of the main places people are exposed to secondhand smoke is in the home. Therefore, in order to reduce the involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke for non-smoking residents, I recommend the implementation of a smoke-free environment in the building. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, the chances of developing lung cancer increase 20 – 30% when living with a smoker(2). Since June 2012, New Jersey has had a smoke free law that prohibits smoking in indoor public areas and it’s also allowed communities to Enact local smoke-free laws (2). As a mini community ourselves here at The Beacon, banning the use of tobacco inside common and residential areas would benefit the majority of the residents living here. There are many families...

...Alcohol and Tobacco College is usually a time when people experiment with different substances, including alcohol and tobacco. Even though the Savannah State campus was ruled alcohol and tobacco free campus, you can still find cigarette buds on the grounds and liquor being consumed at parties on any given weekend. Though these substances can be used in moderation, they are still abused. Education about the negative effects of alcohol and tobacco use is the best way to combat this abuse. I chose to write this essay on chapter 8 because now that I am in college, I am beginning to see more and more people abusing these substances much more than I did in high school. With every puff of a cigarette you inhale 43 chemicals known to cause cancer. There are more than 4000 chemicals identified in tobacco smoke. Nicotine is the addictive quality in cigarettes. Carcinogens are the cancer causing substance. Fifty years ago, it was common to see children as young as twelve smoking. Even on television, smoking was advertised as being healthy. But recent years, the media, now knowing the harmful effects of smoking, is making an effort towards campaigning against it. Some long term effects of Nicotine include Coronary Heart Disease, Emphysema, chronic Bronchitis, and lung and other cancers. Alcohol is made by fermentation which is the chemical action of yeast on sugars. It is a depressant causing the nervous system to slow down. Driving under the influence of alcohol is a major issue in America...

...smoked their whole life and have chosen not to stop smoking. Smokers do not have the freedom to smoke in public places that they once had. The public smoking ban has been the center of debates, because smokers feel it is their right to smoke when and where they want. The non-smokers want to be able to go out and enjoy a smoke-free environment. Public Smoking Bans Public smoking has been a right the smoker has had for years. Only in recent years has the public smoking ban law been put in affect. It took many years of debating over the fact if smoking in public should be ban. Smoking is an individual choice, and it is an activity that is absolutely legal. However, some states have passed laws to prohibit the activity in public and in workplaces. This legislation has been the focus of many debates in statehouses and city-county councils throughout the country. The smoking bans forces a smoker to not be welcome to smoke freely in public. For years the non-smoker had to deal with going out to public places and having to deal with inhaling second-hand smoke and smelling like smoke. Non-smokers can now go out and enjoy a smoke-free environment. However, smokers feel like they should still have the freedom to smoke in public. Smokers do not realize that when they smoke in public it is not only their health that they are affecting. Second-hand smoke is very damaging on a non-smokers’...

...Dear, Ms. Downes I feel as though there is an issue with smoking on this campus, yes I know it is a person’s right to be able to do want they want freely. Yet what about others health besides their own. Yes they have been asked to smoke out in the parking lot, but not everyone feels like it applies to them causing those who don’t smoke to suffer. Plus the damage it does to the campus and environment around. The chemical make-up in cigarettes doesn’t just disappear it attaches to clothing and the tress around us. Trees are in important reason why we are able to breathe but then the plants are introduced to toxins from cigarettes. Those people that don’t pick up their cigarette butts cause pollution, because they don’t break down just get blown...

...Tobacco Smoke Identification How many times have you seen that people smoke around you? How many times have you seen that people go to buy tobaccos? How many times have you been involved in a mass of tobacco smoke? When you are involving in these situations, how do you feel about it? Currently a huge number of people in our world are addicted to tobaccos. Most of us know that smoking tobacco is harmful for our health. However, even though most people know that smoking tobacco is harmful fewer people acknowledge that the tobacco smoke can also hurt our health. Most people are told that the toxic chemicals are frequently found in cigarette while some of them may not know that these toxic chemicals are contained in cigarette smoke as well. “… Cigarette smoke is a complex mixture of chemicals. Some smoke components, such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and nitrogen oxides, are gases. Others, such as formaldehyde, acrolein, benzene, and certain N-nitrosamines, are volatile chemicals contained in the liquid- vapor portion of the smoke aerosol…” According to Cigarette Smoke Components and Disease by Jeffrey E. Harris, we can see that there are several toxic chemical elements contained in tobacco smoke such as Carbon Monxide, Hydrogen Cyanide and so on. Scientists have discovered that when one person...

...INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATIONS FIELD TRIP ASSIGNMENT Kevin Tetuan Kushal Patel, Ph.D., Associate Professor HCAP 2010 20 April 2015 In researching for this assignment I found that TSU has several areas lacking in the overall health promotion of its students. Simple things like educating its students and creative things like thinking out of the box and designing programs would help. While there are several options at the gym, track, and other facilities, there could be a more proactive and engaging approach. Every school has a student health services department and other schools seem to take advantage of this by offering more than the basic services. With that in mind, there are several barriers to all college students, especially traditional ones that are not actively addressed. They are risk factors to health in general. They include things like stress, money, and peer pressure. As HMO’s showed educating people on general health can make an impact on peoples behaviors, TSU could stand to do the same. A simple yet effective way to do this would be to have laminated nutrition facts attached to the healthy options in the cafeteria. A nutritionist could design several meals for throughout the week that would have all the calories one would need for that particular meal. It could even be a part of an overall health plan if a student decided to get that in depth. However, even just have an approved healthy meal option would educate and empower students to...

This crust is harmless, but hard water can be harmful to lime-hating plants (231). 2. ...Niko Antonas Dr. Janet Bean English Comp I 5/5/13 What Your Mother Was Afraid Of A Smokers World Imagine yourself walking out of class on a fall day, it is not too warm and it is not too cold, you could even say its perfect temperature. It’s a Friday and your feeling good, the sun beats down on your face and you see all of your friends standing around outside of the union doors. You approach them as they laugh and converse amongst themselves. When you finally get there they give you a warm greeting and you realize you are out of cigarettes. You proceed to ask for one and as your friend is pulling you out a cigarette he proceeds to talk trash and give you a hard time for not having any. As you put it to your mouth you realize you do not have a lighter. When you ask for a lighter, you get a specific response “Oh you want me to smoke it for you too?” As you light the cigarette, you begin to inhale and feel the thick, deliciously deadly smoke enter your lungs. You feel the burning sensation all over you. As you continue to ingest the horrible gas, you and your friends continue to talk and laugh. Then you slowly begin to realize that smoking is about more than just an addiction. It is about bringing your friends together. Smokers can identify themselves with other smokers and find similar interests; it’s like a sports team, except not nearly as healthy. In this essay I will allow readers to understand and identify that smokers are not just people they are complete strangers...
