...Akhilaa Akurathi Heritage dress 1 Spirit of ornamentation. “The real ornament of a women is her character and purity”- Mahatma Gandhi Thru the history many great emperors led their empires through war and peace. But now it is women’s turn. Many great empresses, princess, queens have ornamented history. Through the golden ages of art, years of war women have changed the history of ornamenting themselves in various ways like beading, surface ornamentation and jewelry. Through the ages women is know for her purity and character which is real ornament for her to wear. Basing on this I had chosen Beading/ surface ornamentation as my component of clothing. My main focus is on surface ornamentation which started out in ancient Egyptian (3000-300B.C) as beaded collars and sheath dress, again it appeared in byzantine era (A.D 300-1450) with heavy ornamentation of precious stones around the front neck and hems which was similar to that of decorating the surface from Egyptian era. Surface Decoration first appeared as beaded collars in 4th Dynasty in the old kingdom of Egypt wore by both men and women for decorative and symbolic purpose. The evidence of using beads for surface decoration can be seen in the pictures of the Tutankhamen tomb. From that age, the skill of beading work was developed and used in ornaments and later on clothes like the beaded sheath dress. They strung beads together into wide, fan shaped necklaces called beaded collars. The collar was a favorite ornament...

...ways to create something you can treasure for years to come. Not sure where to start? Begin your quilting journey by reading these fun and easy tips. Invest some time into your first quilt by planning ahead. Before you start your first stitch, you should have a basic idea of what you want your first quilt to look like. Buying a couple of quilting books with pre-planned quilting patterns is the easiest way to make a great quilt with a beginner's skillset. Many free quilt patterns are also available online, if you're on a budget. Invest in some fabrics that make your heart sing, as well as some beautiful appliques. First time quilters will want a finished product in their hands before they can actually finish it. The best way to combat this is by investing some money into making a stunning quilt. Start with some beautiful patches, favorite fabrics, and cute appliques. If you don't use them in this quilt, you'll use them in the next one. Bleed test and prewash. Some cotton fabrics, especially in bright red and purple, might bleed. When in doubt, do the bleed test - soak a small fabric cutout in warm soapy water for 30 minutes. When prewashing your quilting fabrics, fill the washing machine with cool water and mild laundry detergent; let the fabrics soak for about 20 minutes before rinsing. Quilting fabrics need special care when they are in the laundry. You want your quilt to look fresh, right? Consider buying a quilt kit, or joining a quilting bee. Both can be sources...

...bodices. However, the design team still gets a fair amount of requests for the strapless gowns. The gowns design is difficult to get perfectly right. Every bride is unique. The perfect wedding dress has to suit her body, her personality and her wedding. When the bride comes in initially, she gives us ideas and pictures of what she wants. Dozens of sketches are drawn before we come to the final design. However, regardless of what she thinks she wants, sometimes the bride surprises both herself and us by choosing something different than what she originally thought she wanted. A bride just knows when she sees the right dress. Call it woman’s intuition. After the structure is determined, the design team along with the bride, searches for the appliques and beading they wish to add. This process is specialized exclusively towards the bride since these details are the ones that ultimately give the dress its unique personality. After looking through hundreds (and trust me there are hundreds), the bride is normally able to narrow it down to a few that she MUST have. And together with the design team, the...

...College of Tourism – Varna Cultural Heritage of the Thracians [pic] Written by: Tsvetan 2010 Bulgarian treasures Once upon a time the Thracians inhabited Bulgarian lands. Millennia after, their ancient and mysterious culture revealed its true magnificence. In the last few decades a number of significant collections of Thracian treasures have been discovered in present-day Bulgaria, providing much of our present knowledge of ancient Thrace. Golden mask of a Thracian king Bulgaria’s ancient Thracian heritage was thrust into the spotlight in 2004 with a number of key archaeological discoveries in the so-called Valley of the Thracian Kings. A team of Bulgarian archaeologists, led by Professor Georgi Kitov, discovered a 2400-year old golden mask in the tomb of an ancient Thracian king on August 19. The mask bears the image of a human face and is made of 500 grams of solid gold. The discovery was made near the town of Shipka, in the heart of the Stara Planina Mountain. Dozens of Thracian mounds are spread throughout this region, which archaeologists have called ‘the Bulgarian valley of the kings,’ a reference to the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, which is home to the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs. “The unique mask looks even better than the famous image of King Agamemnon, the Greek anti-hero described by Homer in the Iliad,” Kitov said after making the discovery. “This is the first Thracian mask of solid...

...provided her with a stubbornness that would ensure that some of her most famous designs were manufactured. Although she was highly respected by her female colleagues, the male works on site would often fear an encounter with her, knowing that they were likely to lose. Her belief in her designs and the ability of the workers around her resulted in some of the most revolutionary forms in ceramics production. The conical range was further developed to include tea and tableware; it was launched in September 1929. A BIZARRE WORLD Clarice’s continued drive to produce even more fantastic patterns saw the creation of the Appliqué range. Introduced in April 1930it was to become the second most expensive range to produce, owning to a combination of factors including the creative process, the amount of decoration and the quality and cost of the colours used. The original leaflet for Appliqué featured just two patterns, Lucerne and Lugano, but Clarice’s prolific ability to design new patterns meant that by 1932. At the time, the range failed to meet with the same public approval experienced with the earlier patterns; by the end of the year it was all but phased out. At the same exhibition Clarice unveiled her most daring ceramic creations, the five Age of Jazz figures. These were intended as a table ornaments to place before the popular ‘wireless’ whilst listening to the latest Jazz. They were a marketing dream and featured heavily throughout the press with pictures of Clarice Painting them heading...

...Opening paragraph Background In modern times, a quilt is generally thought of as a decorative bed covering. However, the term actually originates from the sewing method. Quilting is the act of stitching through three layers of material, generally a top, a middle filler layer of down, flax or wool, and then a bottom layer. Stitching the layers to hold them together provides more insulation and warmth (History). ”One of the most universal fabric arts is quilting.” (Bonnice) In addition to providing a layer of warmth for beds, quilts were also hung over windows and doorways to help keep out the cold weather (Johnson). At first, the stitching on quilts was just a rough tying together of the material. (Lewis, p 2). The tufted quilt is tied in enough places to keep the filling from shifting and bunching (History) This method was not extremely durable, and since European women were already practiced embroiders, they began to use those techniques on quilts as well, to hold the filler materials in place better. (Lewis, p 2) Like other household goods, quilts were brough by the colonists when they came to settle here in America. (Lews, p 10) The colonists only had the fabric material they brought with them to use. Quilts were functional items, as the women did not have time for the artistic traditions of quilting which they had learned in Europe (Johnson). As these household goods wore out, blankets were patched, and even combined with old cothes and other blankets as filler material...

...separate shoulder straps. Having theses separate shoulder straps allow the garment to be wrapped in different styles; women could wrap the cloth around different points of the body such as above or beneath their breasts. This dress could also function as a skirt, as women could wrap the cloth around their waist and wear it as a sheath skirt. Beyond the style and placement of the cloth, the ornamentation on/of the fabric seems to differentiate the women who wear these garments. Since there were little to no technologies during the Ancient Middle East, scholars seem to be uncertain and frankly surprised at the techniques they must have used to decorate these elaborate pieces. The designs of these sheath dresses include painted patterns, appliqués, leather, feathers, beadwork and woven designs. Possibly the most interesting piece of information I found seems to be that of the beaded net dresses. These dresses were found in the Tutankhamen tomb, among others. The intricate beadwork is evident of highly developed skills of those who made these dresses. These beaded net dresses give the illusion of patterns directly on the sheath dresses. However, these...

...Quilt of 1898. Powers began showing her quilts in 1886. She put her first quilt on display at a cotton fair in Athens. Powers never had intentions of parting with the quilt, but she ran into financial difficulties and sold the quilt for 5 dollars. The woman who purchase the quilt from Powers recorded the meaning of each picture and added in her own personal notes about the quilt. The quilt was later put on display at the Smithsonian Institution. Information about the second quilt is still unclear. One account suggests that it was commissioned by the wives of faculty members of Atlanta University, who had seen the first quilt at the Cotton States Exhibition in Atlanta in 1895. Powers quilts were hand and machine stitched, they were through applique and piecework. They both tell a story, and had religious meanings behind them. Years later after Powers learned to read and write, she sent a letter to prominent Keokuk, Iowa woman. The letter shared information about Power’s life as a slave, and talked about another quilt called the Lord’s Supper Quilt. It is not clear if that quilt ever resurfaced or exist today. In 2009, Powers was inducted into the Georgia Women of Achievement Hall of Fame. In October 2010, there were a series of events in Athens, Georgia, around the theme "Hands That Can Do: A Centennial Celebration of Harriet Powers." The events included a quilt exhibit, storytelling, a gospel concert, a symposium, a commemorative church service, and visit to the Powers grave site...
