We get a flood of information every day, whether it’s from parents, school, or social media. Therefore when we encounter a painting, such as the Mona Lisa, all of that information we absorbed comes to the forefront of our mind. Information about the painter, the painting itself, the techniques, the story behind it, etc.… “Yet when an image is presented as a work of art, the way people look at it is affected by a whole series of learned assumptions about art”

For example when learning about the Renaissance Leonardo Da Vinci’s name will pop up, and eventually his painting, Mona Lisa. So when visiting the Louvre and seeing Mona Lisa in person, there’s a sense of familiarity, because so much information concerning it has already been digested. Another example is Van Gogh’s last painting Wheatfield with Crows. It is the last painting that Van Gogh produced. This information can influence a person’s opinion of that piece. It could be perceived as one of his greatest works because it was his last. Perhaps one way to conquer this is to not forget everything we’re told, but use that to our advantage and be more critical of the artwork. In today’s world many things are mass produced; clothes, books, toys, and paintings. In some cases it can have unpleasant consequences, such as cars having to be recalled due to life threatening defects, which are sometimes caused by poor assembly lines.
