...Now that the winter break has really kicked off you are hopefully looking at your past essays and wondering what would make them QUEUC ready. For your convenience I have compiled a few tips for you as you prepare and edit your essay for the January 5th, 2016 submission deadline. As you might know at QUEUC we have a 7-8 page requirement for submitting a paper. If you are like me and have an essay that is slightly under the 7-8 page requirement it may be time to review any notes that you had when drafting your essay. Was there another point you wanted to make but didn’t? Was there another source you could have cited and incorporated into your argument? Did you fully explore all the points of your argument? If you feel like you have nothing to add, take another look at your thesis and imagine counterpoints to it and address them in your paper while disproving them. Remember that a good thesis is arguable and you should be able to come up with a counterargument....

...Write a Critical Literary Analysis Essay When writing a literary analysis essay, your main objective is not to write a simple summary. Rather, your goal is to write an essay that discusses your interpretation and critique of the literature. There are a few general guidelines you should keep in mind when writing a literary analysis essay. Remember, there often is no right or wrong answer – what really matters is proving your thesis with evidence! One tip you should keep in mind while writing a literary analysis essay is that you should always write in the present tense and never in the past tense. For example, you might write “In George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm,’ the animals take over the farm and develop their own independent society” rather than “In George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm,’ the animals took over the farm and developed their own independent society.” Another tip is you should also avoid putting yourself into the literary analysis. This means you should write in the third person and never use the words “I” or “you.” There may be exceptions to this rule, however, depending upon your instructor. In fact, some will request a more informal literary analysis that will include the usage of these words. When in doubt, however, it is safer to use the third person. Since literary analysis essays are not meant to simply be a book review or summary of the book, you should not retell the story in your essay. Rather, you need to form a thesis about the piece of literature and then...

...BS When you begin to analyze a story, follow these steps in order to avoid confusion. 1. Read over the story several times One quick read — or even one thorough read — is never sufficient to analyzing a story. Because stories are rather short, you will be able to find time to read the story several times. Analyzing a story you only 'sort of know' will do you no good. Your analysis will be shoddy and it will come across through your writing (or presentation). 2. Discuss the story with a teacher or peer Once you have read the story sufficiently to understand it as best you can, it is helpful to discuss the story with another person. If this story was assigned in school, you will probably be discussing it in class, where you will have the guidance of a teacher and opinions of several other students. More brains are always better than one; consequently, open your mouth and ask your questions. Bring your analysis into the forefront of a conversation so that you can discuss ideas. You may discover that you have found a brilliant new way to view a story. Or, you may discover that your analysis is so far off track that you will need to re-read the story to understand what is truly occurring within. 3. Select a specific theme Stories, like novels, essays, and poems, can carry several themes. You must select one to focus on in your analysis. The beauty of analyzing a story is that it will not be overwrought with too much symbolism or too much plot. It should be fairly easy...

...language you would use to capture two potential values of an analysis of your own organization or of the organization you are considering as a focus for an analysis. The language that you can use to capture two potential values of analysis in an organization is called SWOT analysis. This is a strategic planning method that is used by most organizations to value the company. It captures the strengths, opportunities, limitations or weaknesses and threats. The organization that I am considering is Facebook. Facebook has several strengths and opportunities but it also has its reasonable share of weakness as well. Some of the strength being that it is a popular and most used social networking site that allows people to stay connected and business to get seen. It has a weakness though that a lot of people don’t like and could end up theoretically hurting the association because of privacy issues. Facebook is releasing a lot of the users’ information to businesses, which is good for the businesses, but the people do not like it. Directing a SWOT analysis can really help your business out when it comes to your strengths and weaknesses. 3. You might consider possible problems you currently perceive in the organization and describe how a cultural analysis would help you better identify solutions to these problems. Or you might reflect on current changes being considered or implemented and ways a cultural analysis would help in the process of change management. A cultural analysis could...

...------------------------------------------------- Case Analysis Guidelines & Checklist Overview: In many ways writing a short analysis paper (including recommendations and/or conclusions) is like writing an “action memo” or executive memo in business. The following sections go over how to organize and format your written work here in class and in the business world to be attractive to the reader and effective in getting your point across. Approach: * Read the entire case carefully before you actually begin to write the paper, and make careful notes (including your emotional reactions, which can be useful). Try to read the case once at least a few hours or a day earlier, and then again when you are writing the paper. This will give you time to reflect on the issues, and to think out effective recommendations before you actually have to articulate them. * Relate your analysis and recommendations as specifically as possible to concepts of the course as presented by the textbook, cases, materials on the course web site, articles, and the various guest speakers and class discussions This is where you show what you have learned and are able to apply. * Remember that you have to make careful selections of what is most important in a case, and then develop a coherent, logical way (including useful section titles) to present your arguments using the outline below. Although you may use the guidance questions to help call your attention to interesting phenomena...

...How to Conduct Target Market Analysis ShareThis Every successful business plan includes target market analysis because you have to know who your customer is before your business can succeed. The 6 steps below guide you through the process of conducting target market analysis so you can properly assess the market your company appeals to. Step 1: Identify Your Target Market When you identify your market, you ask yourself a series of questions about your potential customers. When you think about who will buy your product, decide on their: •age •gender •annual income •what they do for a living •what they do in their leisure time •whether are not they have children Then, get more specific to your product. Find out how many of your type of product they already own or tend to own and how often they replace the product. Step 2: Divide Your Markets Your target market may include several different segments in terms of: •demographics •geographic location •attitudes and beliefs •purchasing trends If this is the case, divide your target markets along these lines in order to reach them more effectively. Step 3: Conduct Market Research You can use printed information collected by the federal government at practically no cost including the U.S. Census or the annual Statistical Abstract of The United States, published by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Given the sheer volume of information in these publications, though...

...How to Approach a Case This is not the only approach that exists, but it’s a worthwhile one to try as you get started. 1. GETTING ORIENTED It’s useful to think of a case analysis as digging deeper and deeper into the layers of a case. 1. You start at the surface, Getting Oriented and examining the overall case landscape. 2. Then you begin to dig, Identifying Problems, as well as possible alternative solutions. 3. Digging deeper, Performing Analyses you identify information that exposes the issues, gather data, perform calculations that might provide insight. 4. Finally, you begin Action Planning to outline short-, medium-, and long-term well-defined steps. Typically, you’ll need to repeat this process multiple times, and as you do, you'll discover new analytical directions, evolving your assessment of the case and conclusion. a. Case Analysis Overview Analyzing a case is not just about digging. It’s also about climbing back out to examine what you’ve unearthed, deciding what it means, determining what to analyze next, and digging some more. Often your examination of information about a problem will change your idea of what the real problem is and about what to analyze next. The process is similar to when a detective investigating a crime shifts his or her opinion about the most likely suspect as more clues come to light. Gather your materials and tools. These include the case and any other related materials to supplement your reading...

Students study accounts of specific events in order to discover general principles that they can apply in other situations. Cases tend to fall into one of three categories that sometimes overlap: • • • Decision Cases describe a decision faced by the case protagonist. The student ultimately must choose among a finite set of distinct decision alternatives. Problem Cases require a student to diagnose a problem in a business case and to formulate possible solutions. Evaluation Cases illustrate a...
