Course Description:

This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the structure, function and disorders of the human body. Topics include an overview of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems, as well as a discussion of tissues and special senses. A three- hour lab session is required each week.

Prerequisites: SCI-103; SCI-104

Objectives:

1. To provide basic understanding and working knowledge of the human body. 2. To develop writing and critical thinking. 3. To become familiar with essential concepts including structure and functional level of organization and homeostasis. 4. To recognize the gross and microscopic anatomy of the tissues and organs and also demonstrate how different tissue types interact to create organs. 5. To develop observational skills and logical thought patterns. 6. To use anatomical terms fluently when describing different tissues and organs. 7. To examine the biomechanics and gross anatomy of the muscular system. 8. To describe the significance of the nerve impulse in making rapid adjustments for maintaining homeostasis and to learn how nervous system detects changes in the environment, select a course of action, and responds to the changes.

Reference Books (recommended):

1. Study Guide for Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, 10th edition, by C.M. Seiger

2. A Guide to Anatomy and Physiology Lab, by T.G. Rust.

The textbook and study guide will be on reserve in the Learning Resource Center (LRC), for use only inside the LRC.

Teaching Procedure: There will be one, two hour and forty-five minute discussion each week. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the discussion and ask questions at any time during lecture or laboratory period. If needed, I may lecture in the lab.

Academic Policies

1. Attendance Expectations: Because of the importance of class participation in this course, attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to come on time and remain until the end of the class. Three tardiness will be equal to one absent. Students who are absent from a number of classes are usually unable to contribute to discussion in those classes; such students may therefore, expect their class participation grades to be negatively affected by the absences. Missing more than 3 lectures or 1 laboratory without sufficient reason will reduce your grade.

2. Assignments and class participation: Unless otherwise specified, students are expected to have read the assigned chapter before the class(es) in which it is to be discussed, so that they can participate actively in the course.

3. Testing: Five take home exams will be given during the semester. These exams will test only new material since the last hour exam. There will be a cumulative final exam during the final exam period (this exam will cover the entire material). There also will be weekly quizzes, which will be given at the beginning of each laboratory session. In addition, laboratory report questions are collected and graded. Students are expected to confirm test and final exam dates before making vacation plans. (If you are late, you will miss the quiz. If you miss more than 2 lab quizzes, you will be asked to drop the course.)

4. Make Up Policy: Missed quizzes can not be made up. Makeup exams will be given only with a written excuse from your physician, provided that Dr. Gaskin is notified of your absence due to severe illness before the time of the exam. Only 1 make-up test per student, per semester.

5. Counseling: Students experiencing academic difficulty are encouraged to make an appointment with the instructor outside class time to determine and correct the problem.

6. Grading: Sixty percent of the final grade is based on the five tests (100 points each) and the final exam (200 points). Twenty percent of the grade is based on the average of weekly laboratory quizzes. Twenty percent of the grade is based on class participation. Each student must receive a passing grade for laboratory in order to receive a passing grade for the course. The final grade is calculated using the following formula:

Calculation of Final Grade: 60 % Lecture Tests and Final Exam 20 % Laboratory Quizzes 20% Class participation

Numerical-letter equivalents:

95 -100 = A 90 - 95 = A- 87 - 89 = B+ 84 - 86 = B 80 - 83 = B- 77 - 79 = C+ 74 - 76 = C 70 - 73 = C- 67 - 69 = D+ 64 - 66 = D- 60 - 64 = D Below 60 = F

Incomplete (I) Grade: Students who has made satisfactory progress in a course and has not completed most of the course work but, for reason beyond the student’s control, has not completed a significant course requirement such as final exam or final paper, he/she may receive an incomplete. An, “I”, will not be granted to a student who has not made satisfactory progress in a course as determined by the mid-term grade, quality of completed course assignments and attendance records. Students receiving an “I” must submit all work necessary to complete the course by the end of the ninth week of the following semester (excluding summer) in order to receive a grade for that course. Requests for extensions will be considered after the deadline has passed, at which time the “I” grade will convert to an “F” grade. Under no circumstances can an “I” grade be changed to a “W” grade.

Policy on Dishonesty: The following are the possible causes for dismissal:

1. Attempting to present the work which is not his/her own.
2. Cheating on exams.
3. Plagiarizing or aiding and abetting another student in such attempt.

Students are encouraged to work and study together. However, they are expected to do their own lab reports. No credit will be given to identical work turned in by more than one student.

Withdrawal: Students who choose not to remain in class are responsible to fill up the proper withdrawal forms. Students who don’t officially withdraw will receive a grade of “F” in the course.

Steps to Promoting Positive Classroom Atmosphere

1. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes.

2. Students are expected to be in class on time.

3. Students are expected to remain in class for the entire instructional period.

5. Students are expected to come to class free of alcohol and/or drugs.

6. Students are expected to be respectful of opposing opinions.

7. Students are expected to not interrupt a faculty member or other students when they are speaking.

8. Students are expected to address student specific concerns prior to or after the instructional period.

9. Students are expected to use respectful language throughout the instructional period.

10. Students are expected to receive the faculty’s permission prior to using cell phones, laptops, or other electronic equipment.

11. Item 25 of the Student Code of Conduct states: “Discipline in the Class: Disrupting the classroom is a violation of the College’s Student Code of Conduct. Such Conduct shall include, but not limited to cell phone use, text messaging, speaking without permission, eating food in the classroom, and not following the directions of the instructor. A faculty member has the right to remove a disruptive student from class, pending a review of the situation by the Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Judicial Affairs.”

LAB GUIDE Anatomy & Physiology I SCI 20-201

Room 3-403 Spring 2010

Students should bring the following materials to each laboratory session:
Lab manual, unlined paper (for sketches or drawings), a notebook for taking notes, pencils, eraser, and any related handouts.

The lab exercise should be read. The lab will be open for self-studying and reviewing. (no lab instructor will be present). For access to the lab and microscopes (if locked) see the Science Department Lab Coordinator.

Lab Quizzes:
Lab quizzes will be given at the beginning of each laboratory session. These quizzes will cover only the previous week’s lab work. The quizzes will begin promptly at 12:30 and if you are late for lab you will miss part or all of the quiz. Missed lab quizzes cannot be made up.

Microscopes:
Individual microscopes can be found in the cabinet in the corner of the room, next to the windows. Put your coats, bags, and other personal belongings not necessary for the lab under your lab table and not on the lab tables.

To Replace Microscopes:
1. Wind cord around the microscopes, beneath the stage.
2. Put lowest power objective lens (4x or 10x) in place.
3. Remove slide from microscope. Stage should be dry and clean.
4. Carry it with two hands, and place it in the microscope cabinet in the numbered cubicle (which matches the number on the microscope).
5. If a microscope does not work, tell your instructor, or the lab assistant, or put a note on it indicating what you think is wrong with it.

Laboratory Materials:
1. Prepared slides and materials should be returned to correct locations. slides in the numbered (1-20) slide boxes should be kept in the order listed in each box. If you wish to look at slides outside of class, you must sign out a slide box (there is a sign-out sheet on the cabinet door).
2. Glass slides, cover slips, dissection tools, breakers, test tubes, etc. should be cleaned, dried, and returned to correct location. Also wipe off the surface of the table with a paper towel so that the table will be clean for the next class.
3. Garbage should be put in the wastebasket. Broken glass and other sharp garbage should be put in a specially marked container.
4. Please replace the lab stool beneath the lab table.
5. Please leave the lab neat and clean.

SAFETY:

1. Eating, drinking and smoking are not permitted in the laboratories.
2. Children are not allowed in the lab.

Failure to follow any of these instructions will result in deduction of points from Laboratory Report scores.
