Athletes careers can be short. There is a small window of time for you to be a “pro” athlete. Most athletes begin their career at a young age. Most don’t get much more than a high school degree before going pro. Some end up with less than that. Without a college education, these days, getting a job is difficult, especially a job that could support a family and keep up house payments for a

College Athletics

...College Athlete Compensation: Primary Research Review Phillip Richard Cross Oakland University Rochester, MI Abstract This primary research paper explores the topic of college athletics, and if student athletes receive fair compensation for their sporting services. As to how this question was answered, it was conducted with two separate interviews. One of them was with Ben Anderson, my former varsity basketball coach, and also Matt Okaiye, a close friend who plays college football at Michigan State. The main findings of this research was that college athletes receive a great deal of fair compensation, as scholarships and publicity are the primary focus to why. For athletic scholarships, we see that the student athletes receive numerous amnesties and benefits that compensate them extremely well. Publicity is the same way, as the athletes have a large amount of attention on them which leads to economic and compensated value. This research will ultimately lead to the final project which will be on the argument that college athletes should not be paid. College Athlete Compensation The notion of paying college athletes has been an ongoing debate for decades. With college sports continuing to gain popularity and revenue increasing for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), people have questioned whether college athletes should be benefited beyond their athletic scholarships. The question is, do college athletes receive fair enough compensation for their services...

Steroids

...‘Roiding Up a Good Paper Steroids have been a problem in sports for over 50 years now, and show slim signs of stopping. Sure, you do not hear about them as much, but it does not mean that it is not happening. Athletes are striving to be the best of the best, and the athletic effects the drug shows are overwhelming, but the negative consequences surely outweigh the positives. The paragraph above is just a little taste of what an introductory statement may look like. A research paper on steroids would have a more in-depth, fact spilling introduction. Clearly the topic chosen is steroids and their negative effects. But to be more specific, I would like to find these effects for the Major League of Baseball (MLB). I chose this because I do NOT want to bore everyone, including myself, by writing two papers on accounting and the topic has always been very interesting to me. I am a huge sports fanatic and steroids are problems that arise in professional sports somewhat frequently. People always say, “Everyone knows of the negative side effects of steroids,” but if that is the case, then why do people still take them? The process of a research paper can be lengthy and sometimes stressful, but can be shortened if a proper approach is taken. The obvious start is research. Look up ESPN articles and blogs and other books where steroids are the main topic of discussion and weed out the ones that support your view and have reliable information. Doing this may be tough with...

By Margaret Anne Rich A Research Project Proposal Submitted to the Graduate School of Northwestern State University of Louisiana In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Science in Health and Human Performance With concentration in Sport Administration April 2013 Abstract The purpose of this study is to determine if college athletes that are predisposed to heart defects develop a heart defect during their athletic career. The researcher will conduct a causal comparative study to prove that college athletes that are predisposed to heart defects develop one during their athletic career. The study will examine college athletes that are predisposed to heart defects and do not realize they are at risk for possible development of a heart defect during their athletic career. Knowing an athlete’s family and medical history could help prevent a great deal of possible health conditions. Athletes have a higher risk of developing a higher risk if they are predisposed. There are athletes that do not realize that they are predisposed to heart defects and that they could develop one. Bo Knew Football and Baseball, and He Didn’t Major in Either One of Them.

...become a professional athlete, most of them have a favorite athlete that they idolize. When children are very young it is important to encourage them to dream, and to pursue their passions. But there comes a time when it is not in the child’s best interest to mislead them into thinking they actually have a chance at becoming a pro athlete. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (2013), only 2% of college athletes are talented enough to play at the professional level. Logically thinking, this means that 98% of student athletes should be preparing themselves in college with a back-up plan for life after collegiate sports, right? Unfortunately, this is not the case. In fact, some people actually support the idea that student athletes should be able to major in the sport they play, and not study for a major that would be more beneficial to them in life. Student athletes that enter college directly after high school lack life experience, and they need guidance when making such decisions that will impact their life so dramatically. It is in these times when we should push students to their limits in order to make them grow to be the best they can be, not let them take the path of least resistance and settle for mediocrity. Allowing student athletes to choose their sport as a major may be the obvious choice for some, but doing so would actually hurt them instead of benefitting them. If we truly care about the futures of student athletes we will encourage them...

Deceitfulness of Division 1 Ncaa Athletic Regulations

...listener to agree with me no matter what angle I decided to go with. Thesis: Taxes on individuals making over $250,000 should be increased so that the middle and lower class can pay less and relieve that burden from them, besides the upper class has a surplus of funds that they never use so it’s not the end of the world for them to pay a bit more. My second topic is “Should regulations regarding payment of college athletes be changed?” This is a very popular topic among college students and sports analysis. I choose this topics because this is truly something I believe should go into effect. College athletes are exploited for their talents, everyone says they are getting a free education, but in reality most athletes are not in school for academics, there in school in hopes of playing professional sports. Thesis, “regulations should be changed regarding payment of college athletes, due to the fact that the university is making big money off the players, the players are putting their careers in jeopardy from career ending injuries, and lastly it would give the student athletes an added incentive to stay in school longer.” The final topic I choose to write about is “Should sex offenders laws be changed?” This topic affects anyone with family friends or children. This is a very sensitive topic that I as a father have a great deal of interest in. Sex offender laws are not strict enough for my liking. Thesis, Sex offenders laws should be changed, so that they increase visibility allowing...

...Academic Motivation of College Athletes & the Influence of Athletic Scholarships Abstract The purpose of this research was to examine whether scholarship play a role in academic success by identifying the motivation of the students toward their classes and the influences of being an athlete. The identification was investigated using surveys and interviews. Most college athletes made it clear that their motivation academically comes from their concern about a successful future. A successful future in this place is having a good job, earn good money and have a successful business. As if they were to fail in sports, they would still be able to make a good life with their records in academic fields. So their first priority is a good academic status. The results also identified how being an athlete could hurt them academically. Introduction I decided to do this research because I’m interested in getting a scholarship to play basketball and I would like to know how things work and could possibly affect my academic performances at that point. Scholarship athletes are expected to work hard and dedicate more time than the walk-in or try-out players because they need to maintain their good performance to keep their scholarships. I’m studying in Thailand as a 10th grader. I started playing basketball a couple years ago. At first I was just playing for fun and exercise, but since I was asked to join my varsity team, I started to like the game more. My love to game developed...

His reasons for this seem, on the surface, quite selfish. He desires to be the father of an Olympic champion and he thinks if his son becomes a boxing world champion there will be enough money for all of the family to live on. For Venus, that sport is gymnastics where Tony wants Venus to achieve Olympic status. For Romeo, the sport is boxing where Tony wants Romeo to achieve a high profile career leading to a world championship. Yes. Mainly for financial reward it seems. ...Abstract: The proposed research is designed to distinguish an answer to the argument that college sports participation takes away from the student’s academic performance. While several studies show that sports participation causes children to do worse in school then those that are not participating in sports, it is unclear if this affiliation is a result of negative academics from the child, or due to the impact of the sports on the kids minds and ability to participate in school. The general focus of this study is on how athletes and non-athlete’s grade are during the school year. The study will examine the effects of sports participation on many different measures of their academic performance. Participants (N-40) will be sent an online...

...give them lots of benefits. For them sports are a healthy, fun and beneficial way to stay in shape, meet new friends and pass the after-school hours. One of the biggest problems of student athletes is maintaining their study habits in the right track and this research will help the readers to evaluate the study habits of young people who engage themselves in these kinds of activities. Essay On Job Shadowing

...For my career development research project I decided to shadow Candice Jackson (College of Charleston Women’s Basketball Head Coach), Amanda Taylor (Athletic Trainer for Women’s Basketball at the College of Charleston), and Marc Pronto (Strength and Conditioning Coach for both Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams at the College of Charleston). I selected job shadowing because it is a very useful activity that allows a person to explore a career that they are interested in by spending time with a professional working in that field. It provided me more insight rather than just reading a job description or even asking an employee to describe what they do. While job shadowing, I was able to ask questions and experience the trials, triumphs, and normal day-to-day activities that Marc Pronto, Candice Jackson, and Amanda Taylor might experience while working in their jobs. I was able to experience how the professional approaches the job, the necessary social cooperation, standard operating procedures, and the tools that I need in order to perform the job successfully. Normally, job shadowing usually lasts only a day, but in...

Why Athletes Should Be Paid

...December 2014 Should College Athletes Be Paid? College sports is one of America’s biggest industries. It is an industry that brings in almost 4 billion dollars every year to the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). The NCAA is not the only one profiting from this large industry. TV networks like ESPN and CBS, retailers, and of course universities make millions each year because of the work of college athletes. It seems that everyone is profiting off the college sports industry except for the ones who are actually performing. College athletes are not being compensated for their hard work and diligence in this highly profitable market industry. While some college athletes get scholarships, which are renewed each year depending on the athlete’s performance and usefulness to the team, that is still not enough to meet the needs of the athletes. Also these college athletes cannot profit off their marketability and their name. College athletes are not allowed to receive anything of monetary value in exchanged for autographs or memorabilia. Every year, thousands of student athletes across America sign the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Form 08-3a, the “Student-Athlete” form, waiving their right to receive payment for the use of their name and image (Infante et al). However, retailers and college universities make millions off these athletes with university apparel with the athlete’s number on the merchandise. College athletes also bring a lot of interest...

Concussion Awareness

...Concussion Awareness Among Athletes The packed stadium all holds their breath. Everyone except the player who is about to catch the ball sees what is going to happen. Then just like that it happens, the loud collision of two bodies slamming into each other, helmet to helmet. The player who just tried to catch the ball drops it on impact and now lays motionless on the field. He gets up with help and walks slowly off to his sideline. This athlete has just suffered what professionals in the medical field call a concussion. This article will be taking a deeper look into what happens to a players brain during a concussion, signs of a concussion, and what rising athletes can do to prevent these concussions. Concussions have been an ongoing controversy as of late in the world of sports and it comes with good reason. Though concussions are most prevalent in football, they are common across the entire sports spectrum. A concussion occurs when the head is hit directly or indirectly, causing a chemical disturbance within the brain that can have immediate consequences. An estimated 1.6 to 3.8 million concussions occur each year (CDC 2012). The numbers will always be very broad when it comes to concussions because so many athletes refuse to take themselves out of their games and a majority of the time they neglect to report any concussion symptoms to a trainer or coach. Lets take a look at some of the factors that contribute to athletes neglecting their concussions. A university study...

Concussions in Sports

...head and brain injuries suffered by athletes. A concussion is “a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall, or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull” ("Concussion - WebMD: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention"). The major problem regarding concussions is that they are not visible to the human eye. Concussions occur all the way from Pop Warner leagues as a child to the professional leagues. My friend has played football his whole life. Unfortunately, he has been plagued by concussions ever since he started to play the sport. He is a prime example of an ordinary kid who plays a sport he loves, but has altered his future forever. Commissioners are actively trying to reduce the number of head injuries that occur while playing. However, the main problem regarding head injuries in sports is that players tend to rush back to their respective sports, without proper testing and treatment. This results in athletes risking their playing careers, a life filled with long-term head complications, and eventually putting their lives in danger. As an injured athlete, there comes a point where you have to ask yourself, is rushing back to the game really worth a lifetime filled with head injuries and complications? So what do team doctors need to do differently when treating head injuries? Junior Seau and Sidney Crosby are just two out of thousands of professional athletes who have endured brain injuries throughout...
