Athletic Trainer Observation

During the presentation by Nick Williams I was informed about many things. One thing that I was very surprised by was that all athletic trainers have to obtain a master’s degree. An athletic training student could get a bachelor’s degree in something different as long as they earned a master’s degree. I did not realize how much education athletic trainers needed to obtain before becoming licensed.
This presentation made me realize that I was mostly wrong about what athletic trainers do. Athletic trainer’s main job is to prevent and rehabilitate sports related injuries. I always thought they designed work out plans and helped people in gyms. I was wrong. I learned from this power point that athletic trainers are much more in-depth than

Com 101 Persuation

...Kyle Budde COM 101-002 Paper #1: Three Persuasion principles Netflix wins again One of the many avenues of persuasion comes from reciprocation when someone does or gives you something and then you feel a need to return the favor. I fell victim to this when I was a freshman in college. While in high school, my parents utilized a standard cable package with no need of buying any premium cable channels. This was the norm to me. However, as I was exposed to dorm life, I quickly realized that some of the shows on Netflix were actually very intriguing. My dorm roommate made an account and I found myself surfing through Netflix rather than flipping through channels. Everything was customized to him: because he watched Iron Man, the website suggested he watch Black Knight. There was no thinking involved, which impressed me. One night while doing homework I saw an ad for “Free Netflix for a month” I clicked on the bright red, flashing ad and signed up instantly to stream shows from my own Netflix account for free. However, in the last paragraph of the subscription sign up page, there was a paragraph describing how the company would start to charge me for the service after the first month. I told myself as I inputted my credit card information that I will not be paying for this and I will cancel within the month. As the free month rolled around, I only watched two movies, and I realized that it was time to cancel, as paying for a subscription would not be feasible since I hardly...

Proposal

...To: William “Bill” Hayes, Athletic Director From: Ronnisha Wilson, Head White Team Cheerleading Coach Date: February 17, 2010 Subject: Cheerleading Practice Facility and Injury Assessment Solution Proposal I am writing to propose that a cheerleading specific facility be built and an athletic trainer be hired specifically for cheerleading. The cheerleading program at WSSU rarely has a safe place to practice and there is rarely an athletic trainer present at the practices. About 95% of our athletes’ injuries have occurred with no athletic trainer present. If another sport has practice during our scheduled practice time, our athletes have to practice in the lobby or outdoors. Cheerleading has become more and more dangerous over the years. It is a contact sport with gymnastics put into stunts and pyramids, and requires tossing athletes into the air. Cheerleading is the cause of catastrophic injuries among high school and college athletes. Being a year round sport adds to the danger of the sport; putting extra demands on the body due to no resting period. Injuries are going to happen, but there are measures the university must take to minimize the amount and severity of injuries from every sport. Many safety guidelines have been suggested by the NCAA, Sports Digest, ACCAA and many others. Some suggestions include: * Cheerleaders should have a medical exam before being allowed to practice. * Cheerleaders should be trained by qualified coaches with safety certifications...

Athletic Training

...Kiara Willis English IV Mrs. Lynn Black December 9, 2014 Athletic Training Athletic trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians. Athletic trainers help prevent and treat injuries that are typically caused by athletic involvement. (Live Strong 1) Athletic training first emerged during the 20th century at the Olympic Games. After football surfaced as a national sport in the United States, many realized the need for these trainers to be present at the games. (Live Strong 1) In the 1930’s athletic trainers tried to form a national organization (National Athletic Trainers’ Association), however it disappeared during the 1940’s during World War 2. It was not until the 1950s when the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) was brought back. In 1989, the National Board of Certification emerged as a certified program for athletic trainers. (Live Strong 1) Finally, athletic training as a professional health career first emerged in 1990, when the American Medical Association deemed it an “allied health profession”. In order to understand Athletic Training, one must consider educational requirements, equipment, and the safety procedures. By the 1990s the curriculum for athletic trainers began to emerge. My Personal Philosophy

...younger. Every field of study has their own personal philosophy. The one I would like to live by and use to help me get through my career successfully, is the Athletic Trainer philosophy. According to nata.org, “Athletic trainers (ATs) are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians. The services provided by ATs comprise prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.” An athletic trainer is mainly working around the sports scene, but there are some who also work with the military branches, government service, industrial setting, and a couple of TV shows like the biggest loser and wrestling. In my opinion the two significant questions a person should ask themselves about a particular career are why you want to be what you want to be and what excites me about that career. Coming into college I was a big sports type of guy. I played multiple sports in high school and enjoyed being around it. Also, I am a caring person so helping others is a big deal in my life and how I grew up. I was taught to always help others if you are capable of doing so. Being able to help someone and at the same time being around something I really love, sports, made me chose to be an athletic trainer. To me the most exciting part about being an athletic trainer is helping a person overcome an injury to get back to...

Concussionmangement

...all sports and recreational injures are head injuries. They also say that patients younger than 20 are more likely to suffer a sport relate head injury. Concussions are becoming better recognized in sports injuries. Successful management of concussions in sports is essential to reduce long-term harmful outcomes (Aubry 6-11, Giola 14). This paper will focus on effective steps in a concussion management system and organizational commitment for youth sports. There are three goals that are considered in concussion management. The first goal is to safeguard the student athlete; brain injuries are the highest attention level. The second goal is to expedite recovery to sports and normal activities and the third goal is to decrease the athletic program’s risk and accountability. To address the need to establish operative concussion management in sports, ten systematic steps and commitments will be discussed (Lovell, Giola 14). Saunders 2 The first step relates to pre-injury knowledge and preparation. This is a basic understanding of the injury, its evaluation and treatment. The second step addresses the pre-season baseline testing. Base Line testing by properly trained professionals should be conducted for neuropsychological function, postural stability/ balance and pre-injury symptoms to serve as comparison with post-injury evaluation. Obtaining...
