Atticus believes Mrs. Dubose is an example of true courage in the novel. Although, she represents the darkness of the town in its bigotry and racism, she is courageous because of her perseverance to her beliefs whatever they may be. Although they are two polar opposites, Atticus has great respect for her. Mrs. Dubose had been taking morphine as a painkiller, prescribed by doctors, for years. Before she died, she wanted to get rid of the drug, so that she would die "beholden to nothing and nobody". As an old and sick woman, she had every right for take the drug to live the few months left in peace. Examples Of Atticus Showing Courage In To Kill A Mockingbird

...Sebastian.E English Essay #1 There are many ways of showing courage. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” Atticus Finch describes courage as “when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what”. Courage is a very good attribute but sadly many lack it. It is challenging to find people who actually have courage and don’t just say they do to get attention and affirmation from others. For most people courage is just pretending to be something that they are not. Notwithstanding there are courageous people out there that show courage in the face of trial, turmoil and pain. In the following essay I will be talking about Atticus’s interpretation of courage and which characters in the book...

Atticus Finch Courageous Analysis

...In this paper I am typing right now I will explain to you why I believe Atticus Finch is courageous. You see courage isn’t this noble and dangerous and fantastic thing. You can be courageous just by playing a simple game against someone better than you. It could be standing up for someone even if it means getting pushed into your locker that's crowded because you're not organized. That was a little to specific. What is courageous? Well Atticus’s definition of courage is knowing you're licked before you begin, and beginning anyways. In the book in chapter 10 Atticus has to shoot a rabid dog. Atticus knows this is not courageous and he tells the kids that. It is at this time he defines courage. And he doesn’t try to say it was courageous because...

...Definition Essay 06 September 2012 Definition Essay The key principals of heroism are courage, selflessness and a lasting impact. To some people that can mean a person admired for their achievements, to others it could be a renowned warrior. A hero to me is someone who shows great courage and puts others before themself but expects nothing in return. It is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as a mythical or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability. Often heroes are portrayed as male figures in films and stories usually depicting warrior- like traits. Some dilute heroism when they attribute it to celebrities, giving them hero recognition when in reality they’re job is to entertain. Some illustrious political figures are also admired for their stature, sometimes being thought of as heroes. Many religions hold mere men as demigods or magnates. All of these fail the true definition of heroism in my eyes. Heroes can be described as someone who is able to resist fear. An individual who does a courageous act doesn’t necessarily have to affect society as a whole but can definitely change the lives of those involved. They’re putting themselves at risk, or using their resources purely to help someone else in need. These people may not get media attention, or be praised by hundreds of people, but they have certainly made a lasting impression on people’s lives. A hero, in Greek Mythology or folklore, was originally described as a demigod...

...------------------------------------------------- Courage ------------------------------------------------- Throughout his life Churchill exhibited great personal bravery - much of it bordering on a death wish. His was not however pure unthinking courage - his physical acts of bravery: whether to inspire his troops on the Western Front on 1916, seeking to further his reputation in the Malakand valley in 1897 or by Victoria Cross hunting at Diamond Hill in 1900 - where all designed to achieve something. ------------------------------------------------- Rarer than physical bravery is moral courage. Churchill's determination to do the right thing and his belief that he was doing the right thing was unbreakable. As a young man he always believed that he would die young (his father died age 43) and this may explain his near recklessness and physical bravery in early years. After passing the age his father reached, Churchill's in built self-belief that he was destined for great things continued to fuel his moral determination. This meant he was able to take the tough (if still painful) decisions necessary to win the war - for example his order to sink the French fleet at Oran after the French sued for peace with the Nazis and refused alternative options to scuttle or sail to neutral waters. War is painful and tough - the leader has to be able to cope with this reality. ------------------------------------------------- Examples ------------------------------------------------- ...

Policemen and women are never there for us, they don’t work in our best interest, and they are never there when we need them. These are just some of the negative and ignorant comments made about our public safety members. Although, every once and while, there is an incident reminding us of just how important they really are to us. In this case, the example was made out of the young NYPD Officer Artur Kasprzak. He was only 28 years old when he passed away a few weeks ago. Like a true hero would, Officer Kasprzak went down with bravery and courage. Artur was miraculously able to save six members of a family, including two men, ages 69 and 31. He was also able to rescue three women, ages 31, 56 and 68 and a 15-month-old boy unharmed up into his attic before the rapidly rising water was able to reach it. In doing so, he was able to save everybody else’s life but his own. His life was taken by the storm shortly after saving the lives of 12 others. Officer Artur Kasprzak died in the basement of his home on Doty Avenue in Staten Island around 7 p.m. In the eye of the storm, Officer Artur Kasprzak went out risking his life for the well-being of others. His story reminds us to be thankful for our public safety, and this here shall be missed...

The True Definition of Courage

...Matthew Breske Professor McIntire English 1213-MW1 01 December 2012 The True Definition of Courage After reading the poem "Dulce Et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen, I realized, based on my own personal combat experiences and the combat experiences of Owen, the only word that could possibly describe the poem was courage. Throughout my time in the military, I have been instructed that courage is one of the fourteen leadership traits. Traits are qualities of thoughts and actions, which, if demonstrated in daily activities, help warriors earn the respect, confidence, and loyal cooperation of fellow warriors. There are two different kinds of courage. Moral courage is having the inner strength to stand up for what is right and to accept blame when something is your fault. The second is physical courage, which means that you can continue to function effectively when there is physical danger present. No matter the specific type of courage, both allow the warrior to remain calm and continue with the mission while recognizing fear, which is precisely what the young infantryman demonstrated in the poem and what Owen, personally demonstrated in combat during World War I. Growing up in the country as I did, I tend to think I was pretty much the same as other young boys that spent their lives in the country. I went hunting, fishing, watched war movies, listened to stories of World War II and Vietnam from my grandfather and father, ran through the woods while playing war with the neighborhood...

...Jorge 10/03/2013 How’s your Hero? What is your definition of a hero? Someone you look up to? Someone that does heroic acts? Or just someone that is fictional? These are the questions to consider when trying to define a hero. People today have their own unique definition of a hero as we do not live in ancient times. In ancient times heroes were suppose to be of divine ancestries, who were endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for their bold exploits, and who were favored by the gods. According to Merriam-Webster today, a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities. Throughout history tall tales have been told of ancient heroes like Hercules, Beowulf, and Moses of how they helped their people overcome difficulties in their society. Although most of these ancient heroes are fictional, many may be regarded as great and heroic in literature. In the last 300 years or so there have been influential that have change the world or contributed to make the world a better place, and therefore earning the right to be called heroes in their society. Many tend to look up and define as a hero who they think are worthy of such a title. Parents may be consider as such as they always support and do their outmost to help their children succeed. This is the case in “The Train from Hate” were the mother consoles her son while teaching him a valuable lesson about after being kicked out of the train. ...Figure or Devil’s Puppet? After reading The Scarlet Letter, I would definitely recommend it to any female because of the significant number of themes that are relevant in today’s society. One of the themes in this novel includes the role that women play in society and how it has changed over the years. In the period that this book takes place, women play a lesser role in society than men. Since this time, women have developed their own voice in society similar to the main character Hester Prynne. Hester is a strong independent female and we could learn from her courage. Hester Prynne is forced by the Puritan people to wear a letter A on her chest, which symbolizes the sin of adultery that she has committed. The local citizens were not fond of Hester due to her independence and confidence. Even though she is reminded about her sin every day by wearing the letter A, she wears the symbol to show the strength and courage she has for her daughter Pearl and for herself. Hester takes the responsibility of the sin she that she has committed even though Reverend Dimmesdale is partially to blame. Reverend Dimmesdale speaking to Hester Prynne says, "I charge thee to speak out the name of thy fellow-sinner and fellow-sufferer! Be not silent from any mistaken pity and tenderness for him; for, believe me, Hester, though he were to step down from a high place, and stand there beside thee, on thy pedestal of shame, yet better were it so, than to hide a guilty heart through life” (Hawthorne...

Courage of the American Soldier

...Courage of the American Soldier Courage of the American Soldier What comes to mind when you hear the word courage? Bravery, fear, or may be…nothing at all. To me when I hear the word courage or even courageous I think of the American Soldier. Courage can often be hard to define and or even harder to demonstrate. As an American Soldier of the United States Army we live by seven Army Values, which I believe are all equally important. The seven values that I am speaking of are Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and the seventh value "Personal Courage". Personal Courage as defined by the Army is to face fear, danger or adversity which I believe is the same as being courageous. In my 24 years of service, I have encountered numerous situations that have required me and other Soldiers to be courageous on several occasions. To be courageous does not mean you have to be heroic or do something grand, it can be small things. Examples I retain are having to leave home and face an unknown enemy and not even know if you will return. This is what makes the American Soldier a person of great courage. Every Soldier has been raised by their parents with a different set of moral values and beliefs which can affect what they find "courageous". But to me, being courageous professionally is to know what your duty is in relation to yourself, the Army and the people you...

...throughout the plantation, while I did some other work.Soon, however, I saw a movement in the bush at a short distance away. I was alarmed. I ran up to my uncle to draw this attention, but he was hardly interested in what I said. He kept on working. Shortly afterwards, my uncle himself observed the movement in the bush. Yet, he showed no signs of fear, and his composure dispelled my anxieties. He warned me to be careful, and picked up an axe that had been lying on the ground. He gave his knife to me. He moved slowly and cautiously towards the bush, ready for any attack. To our horror, a huge tiger soon emerged from the bush. My uncle was prepared to face it, to escape seemed impossible. The tiger too seemed to be fully aware of the strength and courage of its adversary. It paused several times while advancing towards my uncle. Then, all of a sudden, it sprang on my uncle, but his agility enabled him to escape the sharp claws of the brute with the slightest injury. Now with the axe still in his firm grip, my uncle struck the tigers face again and again, until it was bleeding profusely. The length of the handle of the axe...

To Kill a Mockingbird

...Life is a constant battle between right and wrong, and what comes in between is fear. It is either constantly limiting people, resulting in some cowardice acts by the jury and Aunt Alexandra, or it is motivating them to do the honorable thing like Atticus and Jem. A single fear can greatly impact not only one’s life but an entire community and this is seen through the weakness or bravery of many of the characters in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, demonstrating that our reputations are built on the way we handle our fears. To begin with, fears are meant to be overcome, but Harper Lee shows us a number of characters, like the jury and Alexandra, that succumbed to them instead, and in turn, they influenced many of Maycomb's townspeople to do the same. After being presented with bullet-proof evidence and Tom Robinson's convincing testimony, the unlawful jury took Mayella's side in the verdict because they were afraid of being labelled as "nigger-lovers". This idea was repeated by Atticus in chapter 23 when he advises Jem, "So far, nothing in your life has interfered with your reasoning process. Those are twelve reasonable men in everyday life, Tom's jury, but you saw something come between them and reason." (233) While Jem has never feared equality between races, the jury has because in the eyes of Maycomb, they would be betraying the white race. To avoid the endless knocks at their doors by white people questioning their loyalty, they decide to uphold the ridiculous assumption...
