Augusta Ada Byron was born in London on December 10, 1815 and died in Marylebone on November 27, 1852. Augusta Ada Byron goes by Ada Byron, Ada King (her married name), and The Countess of Lovelace because her husband William King inherited a noble title. Ada King’s home life was not the best. Her mother was Lady Anne Isabella Milbanke Byron, and her father was a famous poet named Lord George Gordon Byron. Her parents split up only a few months after she was born. It made it hard on her mother having to provide for both of them on one income. Her father moved out of the country when him and Ms. Byron split up. She was tutored for most of her childhood by several people. Some of her tutors, friends, and teachers were Miss Lamont, William Frend, Dr. William King, Mary Somerville,Miss Arabella Lawrence, and Augustus de Morgan. Miss Lamont was Ada’s tutor when she was around the age of six. She was more than likely replaced because her favorite subject was geography and not math whenever Miss Lamont was her tutor. Ada’s mom was furious that her favorite subject was not math at the time. Next, William Frend was another tutor of Ada’s. He also tutored Ada’s mother in math. Coincidentally, one of Ada’s other tutors was Dr. William King, and her husband was also named William King. Dr. King started tutoring Ada in 1892 but he then quit tutoring her because he felt he was not as interested in math as much as he should be. One of the many other people that tutored Ada was Miss Arabella Lawrence. She was hired by Ada’s mother to try and change her view, but she did not believe that she would able to change her. Augustus de Morgan helped extend Ada’s knowledge by teaching her advanced math, and he was a professor at the University of London. Mary Somerville was one of Ada’s friends and helped her get a better understanding of math. Ada and Charles met through Mary Somerville; Mary and Ada studied some of Charles’ findings together. Ada’s most significant contribution to math was translating Menabreas’s Notions sur la machine analitique de Charles Babbage. In 1842 she translated the memoir to english. She also figured out a way for the analytical engine to be programmed and that it was able to be programmed. The memoir was originally written by Menabrea and it was written about Charles Babbage’s analytical engine. She not only translated the memoir, but she also added many comments to the translation after it was suggested by Babbage to do so. She did all of that at the young age of 28. Her comments stated how different codes were able to be used and created for the device. The codes she was able to create and use made it possible for the device not only to be able to read numbers, but letters and symbols also. She is thought to be the first computer programmer ever by many people across the globe. Another reason she was given that title was because of the fact her findings and theory proves that commands can keep going over and over again, and it is the same theory that is used in computer programming today. The theory is nowadays called looping.
