Biblical Creation Vs Babylonian Creation

The Biblical creation account pays more attention to details: seven days. Specific organisms being created on what days. This definitive sense of time contributes to a sense of more defined and concreteness about the story. In contrast to this, the Mesopotamian myths seem to possess more of an abstract and comparatively unclear account of creation. For instance, in The Babylonian Creation, there is no sense of determinate time in the story. It says, “Days on days, years on years passed…”. With this indefinite sense of time, it is difficult to analyze the chronological series of events, following the linear approach to time humans have adopted. In addition to this, Biblical creation is strictly monotheistic, while practically all other Mesopotamian

What is the Documentary Theory? The Documentary Source Theory states the belief that Torah was not written by Moses, but rather, four independent authors. (Ch. 1 Pg. 21 ) 2. Give the “contributions” Spinoza and Astruc made to this theory. Spinoza developed a "higher criticism" of the Bible to analyze its contents internally, rather than through the text, which is tagged "lower criticism". (Ch.1 Pg. 21) 3. How does Davis refute this theory? Because it takes everything God made as a farse considering there is scientific evidence to back up this theory 4. Give several examples of external evidences for Mosaic authorship? The external evidences are contained with in the Torah, which contains references to Mosaic authorship. Exod. 17 :14; 24:4; 34:27; Num. 33:1, 2; Deut. 31:9. Numerous references :n the New Testament also allude to Mosaic authorship, and many are direct quotes from Christ Him- self. For example, Jesus asked the Sadducees, "Have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God...

...Bible Among the Myths Malcom College English 093 Ms. Smith 01/23/2012 Introduction The book is an analysis of the Biblical view of the world and compares it other works in the Ancient Near East of that time with the development of the Bible. This is done by an in-depth analysis of the underlying beliefs inherent in mythology and the Biblical text. Of primary significance is the author's portrayal of the Biblical insistence on monotheism and divine transcendence compared to the polytheistic underpinnings of mythology. The author compares the ethically based Biblical view of the divine/human relationship with the ritualistic and magical view of that relationship found in mythology. With these and other comparisons (and with due consideration given to the various similarities between Israel and her neighbors), the author gives an excellent overview of the subject matter of the thought. In The Bible Among the Myths,Oswalt takes the conversation further by illuminating the fact that Israel's faith couldn’t have simply evolved out of nowhere. Oswalt shows that the surrounding Ancient Near East cultures had a worldview known as Continuity. This view maintained that all things that exist are a part of each other (such as the gods, nature, and humanity), the existence of polytheism, that the gods could be manipulated through nature and natural artifacts(which was the point of idol worship), the significance of magic, the obsession with fertility which led to sexual...

Professor of Theology

...claimed that George H. Pember further elaborated the theory in his work (Earth’s Earliest Ages) in 1876, and the theory was finally popularized in the footnotes of the Scofield Reference Bible beginning in 1917. Today, it is said that only pinheads and nitwits of dubious scholastic background maintain a belief in the “Gap Theory”. If, as it is today asserted, the theory can only be traced back to Dr. Chalmers, then the statement of its reason for introduction should not be discounted. On the other hand, if the theory antedates both Dr. Chalmers and any uniformitarian geologist, then it should and indeed must be investigated by any serious student of scripture to determine why such a Gap exist. Mark E. Howerter, in his work “Creation VS Evolution: The Gap Theory Explained”, follows the now accepted view when he wrote: Uninformed Christians have propagated two theories that have tried to reconcile the Bible with evolution. They have done this because from kindergarten through graduate school it is taught that evolution is a proven scientific fact. Christians have swallowed this hook, line and sinker. They have tried to get God out of a bind, so to speak, because the Bible is in direct contradiction with the theory of evolution. People who take the Bible seriously and literally have introduced two theories to explain how the Bible and evolution can be reconciled. These theories are commonly known as the Gap Theory and the Day-Age Theory. Again, the above statement...
