The Process of Blood Flow through the Heart

The main idea of this description is to show how the blood travels through the heart. A simple heartbeat is a very complex process anatomically. Describing how our body gets its blood supply through the plumbing of the heart is what will be covered in this description. The main job of the heart is to provide blood supply to our body. Even the heart itself is an organ so the heart itself needs blood to work. Deoxygenated (without oxygen) blood comes from the body goes through the chambers of the heart and gets oxygenated (with oxygen) through the lungs; then gets distributed to the rest of the body. There are four chambers of the heart: The Left and Right Atrium and the Left and Right Ventricles. These chambers act like containers to hold a certain amount of volume in order to continue pushing the blood to the valves of the heart. The sequence of blood flow happen simultaneously as the heart contracts and relaxes; knowing the normal process of blood flow can help distinguish what can go wrong in any patient. Deoxygenated blood (blood with no oxygen) comes from the Superior and Inferior Vena Cava and empties into the Right Atrium (RA) of the heart.
2. From the RA the blood empties into the Tricuspid Valve.
3. Then from the Tricuspid Valve, the blood empties to the Right Ventricle (RV).
4. From the RV, the blood goes through the Pulmonic Valve to the Pulmonic Artery.
5. The blood travels to the Lungs to get oxygenated then to the Pulmonary veins.
6. Oxygenated blood from the Pulmonary veins empties to the Left Atrium (LA).
7. From the LA, blood goes through the Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve.
8. Then empties to the Left Ventricle (LV) then to the Aortic Valve to distribute blood supply to the body.
