...In the “Boy at the window” by Richard Wilbur the theme is feelings others pain. Three elements that are identified in the poem are imagery similes and personification. The poem opens up with a young child staring out of a window with pity for a snowman that was left out in the cold. Who had no one to take care of him! He felt if you were loved you should be taken care of. The poem explains how the child felt and he could even cry for that when the poet claims that the small boy wept when he saw the wind blow towards the snow man. Personification is the attribution of a human nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions The language element of personification is identified when the writer says that the “the pale faced figure with bitumen eyes return him such a God- forsaken stare” and that the snowman wasn’t contented and he did not have wish to enter in the house as he moved to look at the youngster cry is also personification. However, the snowman is content with being out in the cold snow but, doesn’t have a desire to be inside because he would melt (die). The snowman can only live in his world, yet he is still moved when the little boy cries. “The man of snow is, nonetheless, content, having no wish to go inside and die”. “Still, he is moved to see the youngster cry”. Both the little boy and the snowman show similarity of pity for each other’s life and at the same time showing the same similarity of misunderstanding each other’s lives, which has made the...

...I selected Boy at the window by Richard Wilbur. The author of this poem said he wrote the poem after seeing how distressed his five-year- old son was about the snowman they had built. This poem starts by using a depressing and somber tone from the overly dramatic perspective of a young boy. The poem is told by an omniscient outside perspective. The poet starts by describing the outdoor aspect of the snowman’s situation as being a lonely and terrifying experience as seen in lines three and four of the first stanza. “The small boy weeps to hear the wind prepare/A night of gnashing’s and enormous moan.” (Clugston,2010). It is apparent that, to this boy, this is a huge frightening storm blowing in and threatening his poor snowman. Furthermore, the use of personification and metaphors are used to describe the prediction of the storm’s violent behavior as gnashing and moaning, both are which human qualities that can sometimes express pain and anger. Specifically, gnashing paints an image of something being grinded up through extreme impact, almost like a tornado’s behavior. The poem also gives a description of the snowman’s facial expression as seen by the young boy, showing a desperation and betrayal. This poem gives a touching depth to the fear that the boy grasps and represents the emotional transfer to the snowman in the boy’s mind. The use of personification is showing when the author describes the snowman’s face “the pale faced figure with bitumen eyes”. I found this part really...

...Running Head: Boy at the Window Boy at the Window ENG 125: Introduction to Literature Instructor: Sarah MacDonald April, 15 2012 Running Head: Boy at the Window Boy at the Window In “Boy at the Window”, Richard Wilbur uses examples of contrast, personification and allegory in order to convey a message about the fate of childhood innocence. Wilbur tries to tell the reader that the innocence felt by children is doomed from the start to succumb to the forces of experience. Contrast is the strongest literary device utilized in “Boy at the Window”, with the numerous examples serving to drive home the loss of innocence and set a tone for the whole poem. Wilbur juxtaposes the bitter cold outside with the warmth inside the home where the child resides; while the child looks at the snowman’s predicament from his own perspective, the more experienced snowman knows that he would be doomed were he to enter the warm house. This leads into a contrast between the worldly snowman, who understands the necessary division between his position and the boy’s, and the young child who feels only sympathy. Ice and water form another example of contrast; “Though frozen water is his [the snowman’s] element”, the snowman cries single tears of melted water out of sympathy for the young’s boy’s sorrow. What the boy desires, for the snowman to be inside the warmth rather than out in the cold, cannot be. A second group of contrasting images is the difference between loneliness and company. Much...

...place in the north of England at Huddersfield. Here we’re introduced to a few people, amongst these the main character, the boy. This boy is living with his foster mom Eileen. One day the boy starts working as a window cleaner. Dedicated he shows up every day ready for work. Despite not being too bright, the kid is still trustworthy and is given the “privilege” of collecting money for his boss Phil. ...the old man’s testimony came into the question. In this play, the second piece of evidence that shows reasonable doubt is the old man’s testimony. An old man lived right underneath the room where the murder took place. He heard loud noises at 12:10 from upstairs. It sounded like a fight to him and he heard the boy say, “I’m gonna kill you.” He heard a body fall a second later, and he saw the boy run out of the apartment. The old man called the police and they found a knife in the father’s chest. The old man states that he took 15 seconds to get out of bed and see the boy run down the stairs. However, juror 8 proves that the old man’s timing was off because it is impossible for an old man, who carries two canes, to walk and see the boy run out of the building in 15 seconds. Also, the jurors prove that the old man would have never seen the boy run down the stairs and out of the apartment because there was very little light. The jurors were convinced that the old woman’s witness account would prove more reasonable doubt. Examining the woman’s eyewitness account, the jurors began to find discrepancies in the evidence. She lived down the street from the boy and knew him all of his life. On the...

...1B The short story ”Sports Leader” by Jane Rogers is about a sixteen-year-old boy who cannot go to college to do his Sports Leadership, because he hasn’t passed his exams. Therefore, his foster mother, Eileen, finds him a job working for a window cleaner named Phil. Part of the boy’s job is to collect the money for the window cleaning by going from door to door. In one of the houses a boy from school, Martin, lives. When Martin finds out how much the boy collects by the end of the night, he decides one evening to pass the boy up and steal the bag with the money. The following day Phil and the boy go to Martin’s house, but he denies stealing the money, and his mother defends him as well. The next day Phil is advised to let the boy go, which he ends up doing. The story ends with the boy fantasizing about becoming a Sports Leader. 2B In the short story, the reader doesn’t know the boy’s real name - he just goes by “the boy”. This could indicate that the boy is a somewhat anonymous kind of person. He is someone who no one really notices, and who no one really cares about. We don’t know why he is in foster care, but he refers to his real parents home as something that “was”, so he might have lost his parents. The boy is presented as a person with very little intellect. He is not good at math, which makes people around him impatient. He doesn’t really understand why he can’t go to college, and he is surprised that the other kids are going. The fact that he is not able to attend...

...According to the Free Dictionary (2012), poetry is defined as “A verbal composition designed to convey experiences, ideas, or emotions in a vivid and imaginative way, characterized by the use of language chosen for its sound and suggestive power and by the use of literary techniques such as meter, metaphor, and rhyme”. The tone of a poem exposes the approach of the author that he or she wishes the intended audience to capture. These feelings may be of happiness and joy, anguish and sorrow, or simply a comical approach. Oftentimes, foreshadowing and personification lead to a very vivid image being revealed as the author attempts to invoke a certain feeling in the intended audience. Thus, the tone is set, and as in the short poem entitled Boy at the Window (Wilbur, 1952), one can feel the anguish of both the parent and the child as the snowman cries. As the author begins to foreshadow the poem, hints of what’s to come are being revealed to keep the attention of his or reader. The reader may feel one way at this point, but often that reader may change his or her mind at a later point as the events of the story being told unfold. “Seeing the snowman standing all alone” (Wilbur, 1952) evokes to this reader of a wintry afternoon that a child has spent outdoors happily playing in the snow, creating a snowman that implies happy holidays right around the corner. The reader can nearly feel the warmth from the fireplace, and see the gaily decorated homes and a bright red cardinal sitting atop...

...poet is feeling sad or has lost someone. Wind and Window Flower by Robert Frost and When We Two Parted by Lord Byron are two poems that express this type of love. In the poem Wind and Window Flower by Robert Frost the poet talks about unrequited love rather than sorrowful. The poem explores not being able to be with someone and losing them forever. The word “Breeze” and “Flower” are repeated many times throughout the poem and this emphasizes the fact that the people cannot be together. Lines 3-4 explain, who, and what the flower and breeze are. “She a window flower;/And he a winter breeze.” Because the reader knows that the flower is the girl and the breeze a boy the use of repetition on these two words emphasizes the...

... a young preteen boy in the dreary neighborhood of Dublin in the late nineteenth century narrates his ongoing infatuation for his best friend's sister and the mystique of Araby; the exotic bazaar. With the boy's great expectations and a quest for love comes the revelation of disenchantment and a loss of innocence. The many symbols of Araby paint a rich picture of meaning. "North Richmond Street being blind", is a real street that is a dead end which symbolizes the boys hopelessness as to be going no where.(91) Being blind also foreshadows being blinded by the light. The light vs. dark symbolism is prevalent throughout the boy's quest. “The street light from the kitchen windows had filled the areas”.(91) The dark, blind street also represents as a symbol for Ireland. So here the light becomes a symbol for the country’s future. The boys neighborhood is dark and "brown" drawing attention to the plainness and dreariness of Dublin. (91)He also uses brown to describe the figure of his crush. The "bicycle pump", rusting in the backyard is the decay of Roman Catholicism.(91) The dead priest's home lingers a restraint on the boy. The priest is a symbol of Roman Catholicism in Ireland, and the description of the room where he died reveals, "Air, musty from having been long enclosed, hung in all the rooms, and the waste room behind the kitchen was littered with old useless papers." (91) The stagnant air symbolizes the strong Catholic presence that represses the boys desires. "I imagined...
