Based on area and population, Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world. In Europe it is commonly known as an attractive travel destination and former immigration country. Over four million Europeans immigrated into Brazil since the first Portuguese colonisation in the 16th century until the Second World War. Since the 1980s the circumstances have changed the other way round. It is estimated, that since then over three million Brazilians emigrated into the United States as well as Europe and Japan.

Nonetheless, due to the growing economy of the last decade, Brazil has changed again into an immigration country. Although Brazil is the ninth largest national economy of the world, social inequality is at its peak. In 2005 the richest 10% of the population earned 48% of the national income, whilst over 40 million Brazilians had less than 2 dollars a day to live (Central Intelligence Agency (CIA): CIA-Worldfactbook, https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/ the-world-factbook/geos/br.html.).
Consequently, many young and well-educated Brazilians see no professional future in Brazil and hence emigrate.
However, nearly half of the population is under 20 years of age, making it a country with a very strong industrial sector and large agricultural production. Moreover Brazil is estimated having the richest natural resources in the world (IBGE).

Short History

Brazil is the only Latin-American country, which entirely adopted Portuguese culture und language. Due to excavations it is believed that indigenous people have lived in Brazil since 10.000 years. However, Portugal began colonisation in 1532 and since 1549 it belonged to the Portuguese kingdom. In 1822 Pedro I (Son of Portuguese King João VI.) declared Brazil’s independence and appointed himself to be the king. Due to a revolt of the national army in 1889 the monarchy ended and a republic was proclaimed. In 2003 Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva became the first Brazilian president to have a working class background. Due to the fact, that he combined conservative financial policy with ambitious poverty eradication, he was able to recover his country financially after the 1997 Asian financial crisis. In 2011 Dilma Rousseff was elected the first female president.

Culture of Brazil

The cultural diversity of Brazil can be traced back to its history of immigration. Since 1500 immigrants of different parts of Europe have shaped Brazilian’s society. Yet, African slaves, who were brought into the country as working forces, decisively influenced Brazilian culture. Nonetheless, a new harmonising culture developed under these different influences, creating a multicultural and multiethnic society. In spite of that every third in four Brazilians is roman-catholic.

The website “kwintessential.co.uk” gives very helpful information on understanding business etiquette in Brazil. The following is a short extract of the website (http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/resources/global-etiquette/brazil-country-profile.html):

.” Brazilians prefer face-to-face meetings to written communication as it allows them to know the person with whom they are doing business.
. The individual they deal with is more important than the company.
. Since this is a group culture, it is important that you do not do anything to embarrass a Brazilian.
. The person making the criticism also loses face, as they have disobeyed an unwritten rule.
. Communication is often informal and does not rely on strict rules of protocol. Anyone who feels they have something to say will generally add their opinion.
. It is considered acceptable to interrupt someone who is speaking.

Business Negotiation

. Wait for your Brazilian colleagues to raise the business subject. Never rush the relationship- building time.
. Often the people you negotiate with will not have decision-making authority.
. Use local lawyers and accountants for negotiations. Brazilians resent an outside legal presence.
. Brazilian business is hierarchical. Decisions are made by the highest-ranking person.
. Brazilians negotiate with people not companies. Do not change your negotiating team or you may have to start over from the beginning.

Business Meeting Etiquette

. Business appointments are required and can often be scheduled on short notice; however, it is best to make them 2 to 3 weeks in advance.
. In Sao Paulo and Brasilia it is important to arrive on time for meetings. In Rio de Janeiro and other cities it is acceptable to arrive a few minutes late for a meeting.
. Do not appear impatient if you are kept waiting. Brazilians see time as something outside their control and the demands of relationships takes precedence over adhering to a strict schedule.
. Meetings are generally rather informal.
. Expect to be interrupted while you are speaking or making a presentation.”

Compare ‘fat taxes’ and other alternatives that can be used address the problem. Which one would you recommend? Why? Answer Based on the article “Stick and carrots”, there are certain factors from economic and social aspects that have caused the individual behavior to shift towards the consumption of unhealthy foods and unhealthy lifestyles. From the economic perspective, the article “stick and carrots” has given the theory of rational consumption theory which states that as individuals incomes grow, the range and volume of commodities each of us will consume is growing meanwhile. Thus, the expenditures on general goods increases alongside the increasing of our incomes. That is one of the reasons that nowadays general individuals may have more chances to gain fat (as food is one of the general consumption) by purchasing more food, especially cheap and tasty junk food. Moreover, the improving of technology within the food proceeding may also resulted in a fall in the price of food, as well as the availability of a wide variety of cheap foods. Importance of Hosting the World Cup

...Importance of hosting the World Cup Ever since its conception in 1930, the World Cup was mainly hosted in the American and European countries. However, Africa and Asia won the 2002 and 2010 bids respectively, while Brazil hosted the 2014 tournament. Countries spend millions bidding for the world cup and hosting the event in the name of it being an investment and an opportunity to boost a nation’s profile. However, this expectation is not always the case because the returns accruing from the intended ‘economic boost’ are far outweighed by the costs. Host states have to substantially alter its budget to fund the event and the costly preparations at the expense of national issues. The sporting tournament is expected to accrue a number of benefits to a host country's economy, including an influx of tourism, creation of employment, improved infrastructure and a higher global profile. A country does gain from hosting the tournament, but not as much as anticipated. Consider South Africa, for instance, which hosted the 2010 World Cup. At the time, the state had a number of national issues to resolve such as poverty, crime and drugs. Instead, $ 4.1 billion was refocused from its priorities towards a short term sporting event at the expense of creating employment, facilitating education, funding sustainable infrastructure and mitigating social problems. In preparation for the 2010 sporting tournament, South Africa bore the costs of upgrading and constructing its facilities in conformity...

PRODUCT The fruit, commonly known as açaí berry, is a small, round, black-purple drupe about 1 inch (25 mm) in circumference, similar in appearance to a grape, but smaller and with less pulp and produced in branched panicles of 500 to 900 fruits. In the general Brazilian consumer market, açaí is sold as frozen pulp, juice, or an ingredient in various products from beverages, including grain alcohol, smoothies, foods, cosmetics and supplements. In Brazil, it is commonly eaten as Açaí na tigela (acai in the bowl). Information taken from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%C3%A7a%C3%AD_palm DRIVERS OF CHOICE The reason for choosing the acai product for import into the Australian market, are: 1- Australians generally care about health and has an interest in natural products. 2- The climate of Australia is hot, making the product suitable for the Australian market. 3- Acai is an original product of Brazil, which makes it interesting and new to the Australian public. Tech Profile

...A TECHNOLOGICAL/INFRASTRUCTURE PROFILE Brazil is the both the world’s 5th largest land mass and its 5th largest country in terms of population. Despite its 198.7 million citizens, Brazil’s vast geographical size makes it only the 193rd most densely populated country in the world. Covering this massive landscape are approximately one-third of the world’s remaining rainforests. According to a 2007 study by National Geographic, the rainforests of Brazil are being cleared at a rate of almost 1% per year. Much of the deforestation in Brazil can be attributed to land clearing for commercial, speculative or infrastructure purposes. Whilst deforestation in Brazil is certainly a pressing environmental issue, it has also been highly correlated with the rise in the country’s economic health. The flattening of rainforests has led to an increase in pastureland that has seen the agricultural industry boom over the last 20 years. Deforestation has other economic implications for Brazil. As Western countries are placing ever greater value on forest ‘services’ – climate moderation and biodiversity preservation –it’s possible that protection of Brazil’s rainforests will be sold on the open market in the near future. In terms of basic infrastructure Brazil is experiencing rapid growth and ranks well compared to its South American peers. Brazil still has a ways to go to compete with first world nations. According to WorldBank, 98.7% of the Brazilian population has access to electricity...

The country I selected is Brazil. I chose to research data sets for the economic concern, Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In this report I will discuss the relationship between GDP and Brazil’s economy and trends in data sets, which are supported with statistical evidence.   The Federative Republic of Brazil, commonly known as Brazil, is the largest country in South America and the world's fifth largest country by geographical area and by population. With over 190 million people it is the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world and the only one in the Americas. There are only two countries in South America that Brazils borders do not touch, Ecuador and Chile. “Its current Constitution defines Brazil as a Federal Republic,” (Wikipedia, 2011). According to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank (2011), the Brazilian economy is the world's fastest growing ranking as the eighth largest economy at market exchange rates and the seventh largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). Its current GDP (PPP) per capita is $10,200, putting Brazil in the 64th position according to World Bank data. Less than a decade ago, ACCIONA was one of Spain’s leading construction companies and was actively diversifying and seeking business opportunities worldwide. In the last year, and after divesting Endesa in 2009, ACCIONA has culminated the transformation into a company that is a pioneer in development and sustainability, and a global leader in the development, production and management of renewable energy, water and infrastructure with the minimum environmental impact.
