The architectural style of homes has evolved drastically with the advancement of human needs and skills. During the precolonial era, homes fulfilled the basic need for shelter and protection from the natural world. These traditional vernacular, or folk, homes where fashioned from local and readily available materials such as wood and thatching material. Visually these homes where very rudimentary and, provided very basic accommodations for the family’s needs. Early colonization introduced more European concepts to housing design known as the Hall and Parlor Cottage. During this period, settlers where learning new ways of producing heat. These homes where constructed from stone or wood. The gabled roofs are sloped at the sides in a parallel …show more content…
The visual design of these homes offer symmetry through side gable roofing and a centered front door. The modernized revision of these traditional styles enriches the practicality of the home to fit the needs of today’s society. For example, these homes usually have additions such as garages and carports to accommodate the growing need to commute. Based on growing societal demands, a modernized Cape Cod style home would be ideal for my family. The Cape Cod style underwent a major revival in the mid-20th century. The aesthetic appeal of this home is ideal for my family because it is detached from other homes, provides, more space, and expansion opportunities. The traditional aspects of the fireplace and symmetrical placement of the multiple windows is alluring. The windows provide a lot of natural lighting, and the wood burning fireplace would provide alternate means of heating the home. This would save my family a nice amount of money in utility expenses. Finally, having two boys, my families need for space outweighs our interest in aesthetic value. The Cape Cod offers multiple stories in the home, allowing more space for each person. Generally, homes of this style also offer yard

Obama Returns to Washington After Summer Vacation

...Obama returns to Washington after summer vacation WASHINGTON (AP) — Vacation over, President Barack Obama returned to the White House late Sunday after a weeklong getaway to the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard. Before returning, the president squeezed in one final round of golf, his sixth of the vacation, before boarding Air Force One on Cape Cod, Mass., for the trip home with his wife, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha. His golf foursome at Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown included World Bank President Jim Kim, New York lawyer and Obama fundraiser Eunu Chun, and aide Mike Brush, the White House said. Obama was on the picturesque island for all or part of nine days, spending most of it out of public view. He spoke out publicly just once, making a statement against violence in Egypt that left scores of people dead. National security adviser Susan Rice was on the island with the president, giving him regular updates on Egypt and other world affairs, the White House said. The political upheaval in that Middle Eastern country is one of several issues Obama will have to contend with in the coming weeks. Also competing for his attention will be negotiations with congressional Republicans to get a new spending plan in place by the Sept. 30 end of the federal budget year or risk a government shutdown, and to increase the government's borrowing authority. Obama has a private meeting Monday with various financial regulators to discuss ongoing efforts to strengthen...

In May 1607, 105 men arrived in Jamestown to establish the first permanent English settlement in North America. While the individuals in both settlements were English, the they were different in many important ways. To fully appreciate our Pilgrim heritage, it is important to understand the differences between Plymouth and Jamestown. This essay identifies major differences and explains how these differences affected the settlements during the first few decades of their arrival. 2. Automation Consulting Services

...Executive Summary Automation Consulting Services (ASC) has experienced rapid and tremendous growth, resulting in several issues and problems within the company. Founders are worried the company is out of control due to the increasing business practice conflict, inconsistency in entrepreneur spirit and increase in office expenses. Thus they are considering documenting a long-term company strategy, monitoring office costs and centralizing the control in order to address these problems. The purposes of this report are to: · Identify and analyze the issues raised from current operating offices. · Provide recommendations to address the problems and concerns that have been raised. To address the issues that have been raised, it is recommended that ASC: · Establish a long-term strategy to convey company goals, promote a unified entrepreneur spirit, and prevent future business practice conflicts, while maintaining the current level of autonomy assigned to office partners. · Implement a new pricing policy where the price is determined by the estimated expense plus a 20% markup. This helps eliminate the current practice of cross-subsidizing, provides partners with incentives in cost control, and helps offices shift from operating as revenue centres to profit centres. · Incorporate client based evaluations into the annual bonus system for partners, encouraging them to expand the client base through acquisition of new clients while maintaining current client relationships...

...talk about Raleigh but it isn’t really true, is it?” The Korean man nodded, the way you do when you’re a foreigner and understand that someone has finished a sentence. He wasn’t the owner, just a helper who’d stepped in from the back, and it was clear he had no idea what she was saying. “My sister and I are visiting from out of town,” the woman said, a little louder now, and again the man nodded. “I’d love to stay awhile longer and explore, but my home, well, one of my homes is on the garden tour, so I’ve got to get back to Williamsburg.” I was eleven years old, yet still the statement seemed strange to me. If she’d hoped to impress the Korean, the woman had obviously wasted her breath, so who was this information for? “My home, well, one of my homes”; by the end of the day my mother and I had repeated this line no less than fifty times. The garden tour was unimportant, but the first part of her sentence brought us great pleasure. There was, as indicated by the comma, a pause between the words “home” and “well,” a brief moment in which she’d decided, Oh, why not? The following word— “one”—had blown from her mouth as if propelled by a gentle breeze, and this was the difficult part. You had to get it just right or else the sentence lost its power. Falling somewhere between a...

Kurt Vonnegut Literary Research Paper

...Ganelle Curry Professor Meredyth Puller English 102-12 February 27, 2013 Literary Research Paper This literary research paper is based on the book Welcome to the Monkey House: A Collection of Short Works by Kurt Vonnegut. Welcome to the Monkey House: A Collection of Short Works consists of 25 short stories most of which had previously appeared in magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly, Ladies Home Journal, Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine, Collier’s Magazine, Saturday Evening Post, The New York Times, Esquire, Venture, and Cosmopolitan. The title story appeared in Playboy magazine the same year the collection was released. Eleven of the stories were reprinted from Vonnegut’s 1961 short story collection Canary in a Cat House (Vonnegut). This paper will focus on four futuristic science fiction stories from the collection. These stories, “Welcome to the Monkey House”, “Harrison Bergeron”, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”, and “Unready to Wear” all share a dystopian science fiction theme. Science and technology are supposed to make the world a better place, but instead, Vonnegut concludes they only create a new set of problems (Farrell, “Science and Technology in the Works of Kurt Vonnegut”). Television is often a target of satire in much of his fiction from the 1950’s. He describes it as desensitizing and numbing while deceiving the masses (Werlock). Vonnegut uses satire and pessimism throughout these dystopian stories. Satire is a special form of literature...

...collection of information from children online, a lucrative practice that the social-networking behemoth clearly would not like to give up. Yet the FTC, though sharply criticized by an advertising industry unhappy with the proposed changes, says that current laws meant to shield children on the Internet have fallen way behind advancing technology. Entities, ranging from large corporations to obscure apps to roving data collectors, gather up children's personal information, photographs, and even their physical location. Antiquated laws requiring parental permission for such things are easily circumvented by cookies that document children's online movements the way birds devoured the crumbs of bread that Hansel and Gretel hoped would guide them back home. For besieged parents, the FTC's proposed...

Critical Analysis of the Namesake

...confusion of its main character, a confusion which itself has become a bit of a cliché. The conventional wisdom about first generation Asian Americans is that an awareness of two cultures is a kind of curse which makes them unable to understand who they "really" are, as if identity were nothing more than cultural identification. Read with an understanding of the significance of the Gogol story, however, the novel is much more clearly an elucidation of the causes and meaning of that confusion, which comes not only from having a multiple cultural identity, but from some of the ways in which people in modern American society tend to view identity. In particular, the allusions to Gogol, along with the motif of naming and Lahiri's own unique literary style, seem to suggest that some of the characters' unnecessary unhappiness arises from the tendency to...
