...Explore the presentation of Myrtle, Daisy and Cecilia Myrtle is presented as a woman that is made to look a little bit cheap, and a woman who is from a lower class to those of Daisy, Tom and Gatsby. We can see this clearly as she lives in the valley of ashes. This is almost an automatic contrast to Daisy who lives in West egg. As an egg has just been born, and is full of a future, whereas ashes are something that remains from a thing that used to live, but will never be anything again. Something that Daisy, Myrtle and Cecilia all have in common is that they’re all materialistic. Daisy is won over by a pearl necklace, Myrtle overcrowds her apartment with “tapestries furniture” and Cecilia “switches dresses three times before going down to dinner”. However this also presents them as materialistic in three different ways. Daisy is a woman in the 1920’s who has been given more rights; however she doesn't know what to do with them. She still feels as if she needs protection, and looking after, which is why she chose Tom over Jay Gatsby. Myrtle just wants affection. She looks for love in objects because she wants to feel that love. This is why she is seen to be so happy when Tom gets her a dog – which is nothing compared to daisy’s pearls, however is a symbol of a rich man’s love to her. Cecilia put her money into her clothes because her appearance is everything. She goes to college and comes back to amount to nothing, moping and smoking round the house. And so she chooses her dresses...

...While there was a national movement to exclude Asian immigrants from all parts of American life, the Santa Clara Valley serves as a microcosm for understanding the racial climate detailed in Cecilia Tsu’s Garden of the World: Asian Immigrants and the Making of Agriculture in California’s Santa Clara Valley. White farmers idealized their valley as an Eden with orchards and white farmers picking fruit. This image did not include asian immigrants though. Tsu explains, “leasing land to Chinese for berry culture as acceptable precisely because the work involved was so tedious and labor intensive.” The White farmers clearly desired to maintain their place in their idyllic valley, yet the reality of the matter was California was becoming increasingly diverse. Out of fear of their image they exclude Asian immigrants from certain forms of labor. While Asian immigrants worked toward the American Dream in the Santa Clara Valley of owning and...

...A Scientific Biography of Cecilia Payne: Women in Astronomy When someone mentions some of the famous astronomers, what we always hear are names like Isaac Newton, Edwin Hubble or Harlow Shapely. However, there was actually one name among the 20th century astronomers that did occasionally come up, separated itself from the mainstream, and broke down the major barriers of sciences. That is the name of Cecilia Payne, who succeeded in working with the astrophysics of stellar composition. Born in Wendover, England in 1900, Cecilia developed an interest in astronomy when she was at the age of five after witnessing a meteor in the sky. In the year 1919, Cecilia won a scholarship to enter the Newham College at Cambridge, however, with the intention to study botany at first. The attraction of astronomy didn’t dominate her life until she had a chance to attend Sir Arthur Eddington’s lecture on Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. Cecilia was so enthusiastic that after the lecture, she was able to “write out virtually verbatim what she had heard, later checking it as correct against a printed version”(Wayman 1.27). And it was the same enthusiasm that made her give up botany and turn towards astronomy. However, her career of astronomy wasn’t a smooth sailing at all time. Not only that women were not granted degrees at Cambridge at the time when Cecilia completed her studies, Cecilia also had experienced a feeling of discrimination especially when one of her professors...

...this assertion? (pages 50-52) In Ian McEwan’s novel ‘Atonement’, each character has been given a different style of language and voicing, which gives the reader a more in depth understanding of the character traits, allowing a larger window for empathy throughout the novel. McEwan has woven in different language features to help us grasp the character and to assist our understanding of the key events in the novel. When listening to Paul Marshall, Cecilia becomes unobservant and her thoughts trail off. She begins to assess his suitability to wed her, thinking of marrying Paul Marshall gives Cecilia a “pleasant sinking sensation”, the sibilance used here adds to the seductive voice Cecilia possesses in the first section of the novel, as we discover later in part one she is a sexual character; her relationship with Robbie is formed by sexual misunderstandings and experimentation. She depicts a marriage to Paul Marshall as being “deliciously self-destructive” and “almost erotic”. McEwan has quickly given us crucial information about Cecilia through use of voice, allowing the reader to understand Cecilia’s naïve attitude towards sex; using sexual language to describe a man “so unfathomably stupid”. As Cecilia’s mind continues to wander, she is brought to fond memories of her childhood with Leon; immediately the sexual tone to Cecilia’s voice is lost, her language becomes illustrative and anecdotic. It describes the “lost tribe” that is her Victorian family, who had “wandered peevishly”...

...literally based on Cecilia Fitzpatrick’s husband’s secret. Cecilia is the person I chose to do my Facebook visual on because she is the woman behind the whole story; she ties into almost every event and is one of the main characters. Cecilia is a mom of three, forty-two years old, married to John-Paul Fitzpatrick and works as a part-time Tupperware Consultant; and under the Information section of her Facebook page she states all those facts about herself. The first chapter of the book, Cecilia finds a letter in the attic saying to open in the event of her husband’s death and she is put into a dilemma because of her curiosity. Instead of opening the letter right away, she asks herself what her friends would do in this situation and she decides that she should wait on opening it. Her friends obviously impact her life in a positive way and if you look in the friends section on her Facebook page they are placed there including her husband, John-Paul, who wrote the letter. The reason Cecilia was in the attic is also part...

...ENG4Ud October 7, 14 Ian McEwan - Atonement Everything we do or have done is affected by the challenges we face. Whether they are good or bad or if they are from someone in our lives or if it is a conflict we have to face, these things will be what challenge us to push us harder for our dreams to come true. Having dreams are a good thing with Briony, hers where to be a famous writer, and this all started with the play she wanted to through for her brother Leon. Also conflict plays a pretty big roll with Briony, especially what had happen to her cousin Lola and Paul Marshall. The last one that impacted the message to Briony was wither her sister Cecilia and Robbie, this was a big controversy about them never getting back together. No matter who you are, you will always be faced with challenges whether they are good or bad, there are always obstacles you have to face and move forward with them. Briony dream is to be a famous writer; even though she is only 13 years old she already knows her dreams and her vision for it. She wants to put this play The Tail of Arabella on for her big brother Leon because she is excited that he is coming home form London. Briony was hardly to know it then, but tis was the project’s highest point of fulfillment. Nothing came near it for satisfaction; all else was dreams and frustrations (McEwan 18). This quote is imported to the point where Briony never really knew that her dreams would come true. She was so happy for this play to happen but...

...Atonement Analysis Essay Briony Tallis was a 13-year-old girl who wanted to be a writer. She is bossy, noisy, and a control freak. She was the youngest of three. She has an older sister Cecilia and an older brother Leon. Robbie is the gardener who she has a crush on. Lola is her cousin with the twin brothers who is from out of town. Briony in many instances misinterprets mostly everything and these misunderstanding ruined the life of people she cares the most about. Briony was a very noisy, sneaky and conniving. After finding Cecilia and Robbie playing in the backyard, she became very cautious of their relationship. Briony had read the letter that Robbie asked her to give to Cecilia. Briony tried to convince Robbie to save her if she had drowned. Briony did not tell the truth about what really happened. Briony caught her sister and Robbie in the office having sex, and she became real upset. She thought that Robbie was hurting her and he also was a sex maniac. When her cousin Lola was raped by who she know was (Paul Marshall) she automatically accused Robbie. Briony betrayed her sister by getting the letter that was written by Robbie and gave it to the investigators. Forcing him to stay in jail or go into the army destroyed Robbie life and medical career. Years later Cecilia became a nurse. Briony was in nursing training school. During this time she wrote lots of drafts to the movie. After five years Briony wanted to tell the truth to the family. Briony attended Lola...

...Emily’s sister – Hermione – is going through a divorce and is spending time in Paris with her lover. Later, we find out that the marriage of Robbie’s parents – Grace and Ernest Turner – is also unsuccessful: Robbie’s father has left the family when Robbie is six years old without any explanation and has never been heard from. The central relationship the novel follows – that between Cecilia and Robbie – is filled with as much passion as with confusion and despair: internal factors, their insurmountable emotions, and external factors, their stark class discrepancy, seem to draw the characters both near and apart until their end. In the course of the novel, other relationships also suffer detrimental effects: Lola fails to properly follow her motherly duties with her brothers which alienates them from her; she also comes across as domineering over Briony in her desire to play Arabella which pulls them apart; Jack Tallis renounces his love and support for Robbie after the latter is accused; and, most importantly, as a result of her part in Robbie’s disastrous fate Briony grows estranged from her sister Cecilia and her family. The novel’s preoccupation with human relations that undergo tragic transformations is indicative of its theme of human bonding and its exploration of the hindrances to its successful completion. The argument in this paper studies the fragility of human relationships as an overarching theme in the...

...is an attention seeking, self-absorbed, meddling child whose series of incorrect observations come to wreck Cecilia and Robbie’s lives. We are introduced to Briony Tallis at the very start of the novel, when she is preparing for cousins from the North to arrive and her older brother Leon and his friend Paul Marshall’s return, so that she can perform her play ‘The Trials of Arabella’. From this we can note that Briony is an imaginative child but we also learn that she is attention seeking because she had also designed “posters, programmes and tickets’ after learning the news that her cousins would be visiting, rather than welcoming ‘Leon with another one of her stories’, this show us that Briony wants to impress her family and show that she is more than just a child. We can see that Briony is quite intelligent as she managed to write a play that ‘intended to inspire not laughter, but terror, relief, and instruction’ which for a child aged 13 is impressive. The reason the narrator, who we later discover is Briony, included that information about the play was because it was foreshadowing the events that followed Briony’s life. Briony would witness and inflict ‘Terror’ by misobserving Robbie and Cecilia’s actions, which would later lead to Robbie being forced to join the Army, Briony then writes of ‘relief’ as Robbie and Cecilia are reunited and finally Robbie and Cecilia give Briony a set of ‘instructions’ so that they can finally be together. McEwan writes this so that reader...

And only in a story could you enter these different minds and show how they had an equal value? Do her actions bear this out? 3. What kind of a person is Emily Tallis? Why does McEwan decide not to have Jack Tallis make an appearance in the story? Who, if anyone, is the moral authority in this family? What is the parents’ relationship to Robbie Turner, and why does Emily pursue his conviction with such single-mindedness? 4. What happens between Robbie and Cecilia at the fountain? What symbolic role does Uncle Clem’s precious vase play in the novel? Is it significant that the vase is glued together by Cecilia, and broken finally during the war by Betty as she readies the house to accept evacuees? 5. Having read Robbie’s note to Cecilia, Briony thinks about its implications for her new idea of herself as a writer: No more princesses! . . . ...Cecilia was born in Rome around the 3rd Century. She was of a patrician family. She was often sought after to be obtained in marriage, but she declined, as God would be her only spouse. She loved music. Her parents arranged for her to marry a Roman man named Valerian. She obeyed, but was loyal to her promise of virginity to God. God converted Valerian himself, leading him away from the falsehoods of the pagan religion into the loving arms of God. Valerian soon converted his brother as well. Cecilia, Valerian, and Tiburtius spent their wealth on the Christians cast aside by Pagans. They also spent a good amount of their time burying martyrs. The prefect of Rome, Almachius, heard of these acts and ordered Valerian and Tibertius to sacrifice to Jupiter. The man who led them to the statue questioned them at such a horrible moment. Tiberius answered him. Maximus soon went on to proclaim his intentions of becoming a Christian, Cecilia in turn had Maximus prepare for Baptism. Maximus greatly admired Tiburtius and Valerian as they were beheaded in the name of their faith. Almachius heard this, and had Maximus tortured, but he died looking at heaven with joy. St. Cecilia would soon come next, but she calmly expressed how wrong their actions were, that the fact pagans worshiped idols of stone and marble. 400 Christians were baptized...

...In episode 5, there is a forest fire that has been impacting the community. At first, this was supposed to be something that was easily contained. However, the dry and windy conditions have made the situation more extreme (with the lingering smoke posing as a health risk). As a result, an advisory has been issues for everyone to stay indoors unless outside travel is absolutely necessary. For the hospital, this means that they are facing an increasing number of patients being admitted secondary to the effects of smoke inhalation. Once the staff is able to effectively, deal with the current influx of patients, the hospital is inundated with another round of patients being admitted through the emergency room. This is placing pressure on the hospital staff, as they have to work longer hours and are often frustrated by these issues. To make matters worse, the administration has announced that they will require everyone to work additional hours (with no overtime pay). This has angered many people, who believe that their timing is poor given the challenges they are facing. To make matters worse there is infighting between the staff about the availability of more beds (from patients who are constantly overwhelming the facility). This is creating a problem for staff members who feel as if they are not receiving the necessary assistance (“Neighborhood News,” 2012). In the case of the senior center, everyone has been reporting negative effects from the smoke inhalation include the...
