...CO2520: Module 3 Developingg Effective Human Communication Skills Developing Effective Human Communication Skills Example 1: Mr. Gentry, Thank you for the opportunity to interview with you. I was very impressed with the company mission and the package that is associated with the hired position. I appreciate your time to meet with me and look forward to hearing from you soon. When will I be hired? Sincerely, Bennie Yako Analysis Ending this very professional and to the point letter with when will I be hired seems pushy and may come across as overconfidence. Instead Bennie could have ended the letter with I appreciate your time and I look forward to the opportunity to speak to you further about this position. The positive side of this appreciation letter is that he mentioned details like appreciating the company mission and employee incentives, this shows the employer that he was well engaged in the interview. I believe this writing style could have been written more professionally, should be in a business letter format (address and contact information for both parties at the top, date etc.). Example 2: I failed my exam because I locked my keys in my car and couldn’t get my textbook until well after midnight so I couldn’t study. Analysis If it were true that he locked his keys in his car and couldn’t get his textbook until midnight it has no relevance to him failing his exam. As a student one must take responsibility for his/her schoolwork. Waiting...

Breadboard II. 8051 microcontroller III. 4x4 Hex keypad IV. 7 – segment display V. Keil program software VI. 5 volt power supply VII. 330 ohm resistor pack VIII. 1 resistor (8.2K ohm) Progress Update Although our circuit is not built, we have made progress. We have to order a part in order for the project to work. We have to order the 4x4 hex keypad. Once the keypad arrives, we can wire it to our breadboard or the trainer. In order for this project to work, we must make sure that our circuit chips have power (VCC) and are grounded. After that is done, we will take our 33pF capacitors and connect them to our 11.0592MHz oscillator, which is connected to XTAL1 and XTAL2 on the 8051 trainer. We will then tie R1 – R4 and C1 – C4 on our hex keypad to ports 1.0 through 1.7 together on the 8051. Ports 0.0 – 0.7 on the 8051 will have a 330 ohm resistor pack connected to the 7 segment display. We will then have our 10uF capacitor tied together with the 8.2k ohm resistor, which should be connected to our reset. Test Plan To troubleshoot the circuit, we first must know how it is supposed to work. If the keypad is not working, we must check all connections and we can use a logic probe to see if we are getting an output at certain pins. We can also use the logic probe if our 7 – segment display is not lighting up or not...

...1. How you communicate? 2. Why you communicate in a certain way? 3. Your communication strengths? 4. Your communication weaknesses? 5. What you want to learn? My Communication Style From an infant I’ve learned how to communicate. We all communicate in different ways to achieve different results of feedback. I communicate in many different forms such as hand gestures, eye to eye contact, and nonverbal gestures with my eyes, such as raising an eyebrow or facial expressions. My tone or facial expressions show how I want to articulate my words. I communicate in different ways according to the receiver and the message I am trying to get across. From watching motivational speakers I imitate certain styles from them related to similar situations in my life. I am a very verbal person. I’m not afraid to express how I feel. I know how to adapt to different conversational situations. I hear what I want to hear sometimes. I always have to get the last word in any conversation. I assume a person knows what I am talking about sometimes dealing with certain situations. I want to learn how to understand what exactly a person is trying to tell me. I want to learn how to not allow certain things people say to me to get under my skin. I want to learn what my fiancé is trying to tell me sometimes through certain gestures or unspoken words. I want to learn how to read between the lines when dealing with the opposite sex. I want to learn how to make sure a person understands me...

...During the 1700s elocution was considered an art form, and a formal discipline. Elocution encompasses a number of important principles, articulation, inflection, accent, voice, and gesture. The study of this topic seems to me, to be very important. Humans in general need to convey the meaning behind their message. Without this course of study and its effects on our modern world we as a species might not be as advanced as we are. Imagine one of our nation’s speakers approaches a podium in a foreign country. He is not dressed in proper attire. He gives his speech about how trade between our nations could benefit us both. Unfortunately he is slouched over and doesn’t move or gesture to convey the feelings and motives behind his speech. He delivers the speech without the correct intonation and volume. He doesn’t use effective wording and a rich tone of voice. I imagine witnessing this would be a catastrophe for any relations between two foreign nations. Without the study of behaviorism and the methods of elocution, we would still be living in hovels, and most likely living in fear of the people around us. My point of view about the interpretive studies or (humanism) would have to start with Classical Greek and Hellenistic Humanism. The classical period in Greece, and the Greek-influenced period that directly followed, was the wellspring for philosophy and art in Western Civilization. It featured: * Human-centered sculpture and painting, in an increasingly natural and realistic...

With the assumptions orienting toward behavior they believed that the “aim of communication research was to describe, predict, and explain human behavior with the ultimate goal of discovering universal laws that apply across situations and contexts. I think the social science contemporary approach to communication is being used in these theories. A lot of the studies that are being done were based on the mental and social health of the people. Elderly people’s minds do a lot of changing in their life times and it is extremely usual for them to go up and down on a scale. The study points out that elderly people have to deal with long term issues with sicknesses and condition. The social sciences are academic disciplines concerned with the study of the social life of human groups and individuals including anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology, history, social studies, and sociology. I believe that Social Science approached was used to communicate in this abstract because the different studies were based on either the husband or the wife. ...CO2520 Difference Between Smart & Intelligent For many people, there is no difference between smart and intelligent, because the words seem to be interchangeable. However, there is a difference between the meanings and use of these words. Smart can be applied to learned inferences, such as making smart business or emotional decisions. Smart is an earned status. When we study and learn, we become smarter in the subject matter. Book smart or street smart, we have to put effort into becoming smarter. Intelligence, on the other hand, is something with which you are born. Your IQ is a measurement of your intelligence, and doesn’t change because it is a measure of your ability to learn. This can apply to terms we chronically associate with intelligence, like math, or it can apply to your ability to learn negotiation of emotional issues. In either case, it is inherent, and it simply stems from your genetic makeup. Smart can also be applied to sarcasm. We have ‘smart alec’ answers, or we can be ‘smart’ when answering a question or talking in a conversation. We don’t apply intelligent to the idea of being sarcastic. Intelligent is used as a higher level of measured intellect. We give a higher compliment when we tell someone they are intelligent, versus when we tell them that they are smart. Intelligence is directly related to our own degree of sophisticated knowledge. Smart can also be applied to describe appearance. If you...

...Carlos Meza CO2520 17999412 Unit 6 assignment 2: Relationship, communication, and society I reject the idea that one must conform to external influences because there is pressure from all around to do one thing or another. When someone pushes for me to try to change to fit their idea of who I should be, my first instinct is to forcibly reject it and fit my own guides of what I should do. Though there are times when I have to conform to receive the outcome I desire. My choices are my own and I own them and make them mine. In the situation I am thinking of, I was being influenced to stop seeing my wife because she wasn’t the kind of person others thought I should be with. With that I changed the situation but not in the way one may think. Instead of changing to the extent of leaving her while we were dating I changed it so she would be my future wife. This was done both because I wanted to be with her but also to give the world the flying finger and say no I will not conform because I want this. With this choice, I benefited immensely because of how much I love her and her me, and yet with it I don’t know that I benefited from it at all because of the choices I already choose. I make my own selection of choices instead of going “against” or “with” what people say. So in some instances I do follow the “norms” but others I go against them because I make my own choices and depending on the circumstances will go with or against it. If I had it to be done again I would do it...

It’s what makes us who we are, whether we are black, white, Hispanic, Jewish, and gay. “When you enrolled in college, you were most likely required to provide a piece of identification, such as a birth certificate, passport, or driver’s license. Identity is tied closely to identification; it refers to who you are and the specific characteristics that make you different from other individuals. In communication studies, identity includes not only who you are but also the social categories you identify yourself with and the categories that others identify with you.” Alberts (2013). The three identities developments through communication are reflected appraisal, social comparisons, and self-fulfilling prophecies. Reflected appraisal is a primary influence on identity development. It’s the self-image on how others view them. It’s also known as the “looking-glass self” Alberts (2013), it’s the self-image that others reflect back to you. When we are born our identity starts, we don’t have a sense of self yet, our parents talk to us and we learned to respond and figure out who we are. Parents that have a nice happy...

...Communicating, Perceiving, and Understanding By Kwasi Amaning (05781582) Communicating, Perceiving, and Understanding By Kwasi Amaning (05781582) This chapter talks about communication as it relates to perception. Perception is the processes of selection, organization, and interpretation of the information that is collected through our senses like what we see, hear, taste, smell, and touch. Selection is choosing which sensory information to focus on when communicating, Organization is the way by which one recognizes what sensory input represents are in communication, and Interpretation is the act of assigning meaning to sensory information during communication. In the picture presented, when you first look at it you will notice two people a man and a woman learning. If you look further you will see that it looks like the woman is teaching the man and show him something in the book. Now the physical factors in this case that will affect their communicating will be visual acuity, sense of smile and hearing acuity. Visual acuity in the sense that it is a woman teaching a man if she is no his mother or sister and she happens to be a friends from let’s say school, he might be attracted to her and the will distract him from paying attention to whatever she is teaching him and it will affect their communication. Sense of smile could also play a big factor if in the same scenario and she happen to be smiling good he will be distracted by the smile and he will not...

...July 31, 2014 Communicating in Close Relationship Please take the time out of your busy day and sit down for a good hour. Jot down some of the things that you have experience well in your relationship and some things that need improvement. Now, you ask why I should do this. Well, it is simple; you need a map of how you want to improve your skills. Try not to focus on the negative feedback that you encounter, but rather on the things you can improve on and how you can become more aware of them when you are interacting in close proximity. Take for example the chart list below. These of are some of the things I saw in myself. Good Traits | Needs Improvement | Listening | Not able to express clearly in words | Sensitive to my partner feelings (can relate) | Temperament | A desire to help my partner (wanting to solve) | Take over & fix myself | Did not talk much | Did not use correct vocabulary | Now, see the improvements – take a look at before and where I am today. (Same heading from the previous chart.) Patience | Language & culture differences | Able to separate my emotions and thoughts | Becoming more selective of who & whom I share | Chose the surroundings (Setting) | Knowing the place and time for holding conversation | Selective on the vocabulary words being use & with | Learning more – education- expanding outwardly | Did not talk too much & listen with open mind | Choosing what I listen & provide advice | With the...

...Linear Model: The linear model shows a sender transmitting messages to a receiver. Once they are finished it is assumed the roles are reversed and the sender becomes the receiver and the receiver becomes the sender. In 1949, two engineers added noise to the equation to show its effect on communication. Interactive Model: The interactive model adds the variable of dual roles. In this model, it assumes that the parties involved in the communication can be senders and receivers. A big part of this model is the field of experience and feedback. Feedback is a method of sending a message to indicate what they are getting from the conversation. Field of experience is another factor that will dictate how two people communicate. For example: An engineer will speak differently to other engineers as opposed to customers who would not understand the technical aspects. Transactional Models: Transactional models add the dimension of constant communication between 2 or more parties. Instead of depicting senders/receivers as fulfilling one role at a time, this model portrays them as filling both roles at the same time. Even if you are not the speaker, body language and responses (or even lack of responses) is a form of communication. Books Model: The books model adds outside influences such as societal forces, culture and context. When two or more people are communicating, factors such as the culture or the context of the discussion will change the messages dramatically...

...UNIT 4 ASSIGNMENT 2 Verbal and Nonverbal Communication Ethics Statement People have the uncanny knack of communicating something even if they didn’t intend to do it. It’s the way that the way our body moves is able to tell the real story, sometimes though what we physically say is not re enforced by our body language. Most people who take the time to study your disposition enough are able to gather more information about you than if they just listened to you. I know I have to be careful that I’m not meaning one thing but say another. What people hear and what is actually said is sometimes very different. If we’re not careful we can all have unethical behavior that demeans others. For example, if you speak in a patronizing vocal tone, if you scream at the less powerful, or if you touch people inappropriately, you are engaging in unethical nonverbal communication. Similarly, if you respond to others' communication in a way that misrepresents how you actually feel, you are being unethical. Thus if you laugh at a racist joke even though you dislike it, your behavior is unethical both because it degrades others, and because it misrepresents your true reaction to the joke. Nonverbal behaviors reflect your real attitudes, beliefs, and feelings. Without being aware of it we could be using our nonverbal behavior to intimidate, coerce, or even silence someone. Always try to remember that you are just as responsible for your nonverbal communication as you are for your verbal communication...

...Syeda M Tazim CO2520 Unit 4 Assignment 1 Identifying Written Communication Style 1. What issues have you found in the written examples that violate the professional and ethical standards of communication? a. In the first example Bennie Yakos adds, “When will I be hired?” to the end of the letter. I don’t think that’s a very smart idea. Being that she is the one trying to get hired it’s never smart to be so forward and blunt with an employer. Surely the Ms. Yakos means nothing bad about it, but she shouldn’t have asked. Example 3 is just an excuse from someone. The writer wants the reader to feel sympathy for them. Using the excuse that they left their keys in the car and that’s why the writer couldn’t study. In the last example the writer is using instrumental and regulatory communication. The person is giving them directions and information on what needs to be done. 2. What were the positive aspects that you have discovered while analyzing both the project initiation email and an appreciation note? b. In the appreciation note the writer was thankful for the opportunity to be interviewed and wanted to show that by writing and an appreciation note. In hopes of maybe it helping her in the hiring decision. The fact that it’s a project initiation in a positive aspect. He is letting everyone know what they need to bring and expect at the meeting. 3. Analyze both the written axamples and identify the different writing styles used. What according to you...
