...Max Lisch English 1A August 26, 2015 Diagnostic Essay Should community college im plement a professional dress code for their students? Implementing a professional dress code would have a detrimental effect on the learning environment at community college. Freedom of expression is an important part of a student’s life. Many students feel confined by the strict rules and regulations already imposed at community colleges, and greater confinement of their personalities could lead to resentment of the institution. Students and educators cannot have a positive relationship if students feel oppressed by overly zealous regulations. Furthermore, many forms of cultural dress could be regarded as nonprofessional forcing students to distance themselves...

...Spring is coming, which means we are entering the season of the regulation of how much skin girls around the country are allowed to bare. Dress codes, while usually regulating boys' slovenliness, tend to police girls for how much of their bodies are visible. Anyone who's ever painted or stood in a room surrounded by Kara Walker silhouettes can tell you that white space is defining and when we talk about dress codes, girls' skin is the white space we've all been trained to ignore in these discussions. And, while everyone is in theory affected by dress codes, girls and LGTBQ youth are disproportionately affected by them. Challenging schools to align unexamined, traditional dress codes to contemporary values is a tangible place to start if you're interested in teaching kids to live in a diverse, tolerant society. Of course, many parents are not interested. When it comes to girls, skimpy and skin-baring clothes are often the primary issue. Kids know that many words, like "unladylike," are code for "slutty." Other words that are frequently used include "distracting" and "unprofessional." Many teachers worry that girls' skin will "so addle boys' brains that they will be unable to concentrate." Boys, and apparently in Iowa, adult men who can now legally fire "irresistible" women, we are told, simply cannot concentrate in this environment. So, what exactly is wrong with saying girls are "distracting"? I mean, everyone know this, right? •Who gets to be distracted? And, whose distraction...

...Classical Argument Position ENGL 123 Public School-uniform: Decision hanging by a thread Today’s youth face a different learning environment that was not as prevalent in years past. Peer in on any one of the more than 98,500 schools, and notice the difference. Public schools have morphed into more of a hangout and social hour-type atmosphere, as well as become the new “red carpet” to display the latest fashion trends. That is not all. Reported cases of drug and alcohol use, weapons brought into school, and violence and bullying have drastically increased over the years, and not just in the high schools either, but in all grade levels. As each of these problems take a seat at the head of the class, quality education breaks for recess. Although the factors attributing to the recent increases in these issues are many, one viable solution to mitigate some of the problems is for all public schools to require their students wear uniforms. Many advocates for this initiative, me included, strongly believe that mandating the wear of uniforms will reduce the alarming numbers for violent behavior and bullying, as well as alleviate any socio-economical barriers that currently exist; therefore, they will become the catalyst which brings the focus back to education within the classroom. For those parents who oppose the idea of uniforms, and who believe that mandating their child wear a uniform while attending public schools violates the First Amendment and stifles their child’s...

...It is quite peculiar for public schools to adopt the idea of a modified dress code or uniforms; but schools such as Clearwater High School are paving the way for this sudden change in dress code. In 2013, Countryside High School proposed the idea of adopting uniforms for the upcoming school year. However, this proposal was rejected my majority of all Countryside High School parents. Now for the year 2014-2015 the faculty and staff at Countryside have passed the modified dress code without the consent of its students or parents. This new modified dress code consists of: Polo’s only blue jeans, no hoodies, and no dresses. The new dress code should be withdrawn; it negatively affects students and parents, not just the staff. Also, the problems...

...There are many codes in the world but one code hits close to home. The well-known dreaded code that most of the world has experienced in schools. Styles come and go, and with each mind comes a passionate fashion sense, mostly of the female student body, so it has become highly noticeably that high school policies have become stricter towards the feminine majority compared to the masculine counterpart. Some schools go as far as assigning uniforms, which completely disrespect the personality or gender of that student. Enforced by stereotypes, stigmas, and sexualization, dress codes have stripped the youth of the world their own creation towards clothing since the 90s and continue to do so in force. Articles such as “The problem with Dress Codes” by Meg Besaw publish by the Odyssey Acknowledges the hardships of clothing and how girls who shop for themselves are always trying to buy clothes that adhere to the policies of their local school. Besaw stated that “Clothes don’t always stay that way you bought them.” Although you may buy clothes that fit the standard of the code, there is always the possibility over time it gets ruined, stretched, or created to something more to their taste or sense of style. Therefore, it is never sure that all clothing will stay inside the restrictive bounds of what a school expects....

...Why Students Should Have a Dress Code Anthony L Link Baker College Why Students Should Have a Dress Code In schools across the world, students are permitted to wear certain types of clothing, or even have a school uniform that they are designated to wear on certain days, although for most public schools, this is not the case. For many public schools, students are allowed to wear certain clothing that expresses their opinions, views or likes and dislikes, although there are certain restrictions in this type of dress as well. School systems have been getting lax with what they are allowing in schools, and it may be hurting, helping, or even distracting students’ progress within the schools. Dress codes should be followed and enforced in order to provide a proper learning environment to students, so they can get the most out of their learning experience. Many schools have dress codes that adhere to when the school itself was founded, although certain professors and school officials have their own interpretation of the dress code. Many people wonder what exactly a dress code is. A dress code adheres to the standards that the establishment sees fit to promote and the values it was founded on (Evans, 2008). Although people have different views on what exactly a dress code should follow, be it business casual, street casual, or a type of uniform, there should be a standard of dress that everyone should follow as to keep people from being distracted or distraught from the...

...Should School Dress Codes Be Enforced? Troy Gibson Research and Writing- English 215 Fall Quarter Major Paper B Final Exam December 18, 2008 Instructor: Danny L. Daily Over the last decade or so the topic of school dress codes has been the center of attention here in America. The main question asked is, Should school dress codes be enforced? Especially in public schools in the U.S. There are some positive and negative factors surrounding the concerns of school dress codes being enforced. Some opponents against school dress codes include, students, parents and faculty members, which argue certain factors that enforcing the dress code is, a violation of students rights, of freedom of expression, second, it can put a financial burden on students families who live below the poverty line, third, some claim it is just a temporary relief to school violence, fourth it adds an additional tax on parents who already pay taxes on free public schooling, and fifth, some say that enforcing the dress code is to difficult in public schools. On the other hand, those who are proponents of the dress code add that by enforcing this policy, it will help eliminate violence, identify outsiders who do not belong there, improve a student attendance, eliminate students from being peer pressured in buying designer clothing and foster a students discipline as well as lessen the social and economic boundaries between students in school. With all of these...

I believe each year students dress more inappropriately to school, and do not follow their set dress code. With schools having set uniforms, bulling would decrease, and it is said that academics rise, violence reduces, it is a money saver for parents, and better prepares the student for the work force in the future. Also when a school has a uniform it helps the community look more appealing to those looking to buy a home there. Problem Statement Uniforms should be set in schools starting from kindergarten and go until the twelfth grade. Each year students break dress code, but it seems to be getting out of control. Students are dressing inappropriately for school and causing unnecessary attention to themselves, in the wrong way. This problem begins in the beginning of the school year and continues on until the end of the school year. With a set uniform it will not only affect the students, but it will affect the schools as well. Set uniforms will help the schools, because it will be one less worry the school has to think about. Uniforms will affect the...

...Uniforms in Public Schools Marla Downey Axia College of University of Phoenix COM 120 Effective Persuasive Writing Dr. Carla Lane February 21, 2007 Uniforms in Public Schools Think back to the age of adolescence, was there ever a comment made by other children on the way one dressed or did some teasing occur regarding the lack of current style? Was there an issue of being prejudged or stereotyped by others, including school faculty, based on the clothing one chose to wear? That was then, now remember how it felt. Times have changed and economic status plays such an important role in everyone’s lives, image how children of today feel. Social economics is a hard issue for adults to deal with and yet children are forced to deal with it on a daily basis in schools with their classmates, friends, and even their teachers. What solutions can be offered to change this bias for all children, regardless of age, race, and social status? One suggestion is to put school dress codes in place which would require school uniforms. School uniforms should be mandated in public schools because our children’s self esteem and education should not be determined by the clothes they wear. There is a nationwide campaign for the use of uniforms and the efforts are “gaining momentum”, states Susan Thomas (1994, p. 44). School systems are challenged with many issues, one being “ways to reduce competition over designer labels” (Thomas, 1994, p. 44). It is safe to say that both opponents...

...promote discipline in students? Many people think so and are pushing the issue and requiring schools to enforce it. I couldn’t agree more with wearing school uniforms. I feel students should have to wear uniforms, however, even though there are several advantages and disadvantages on this controversy, I believe it is definitely beneficial for students and their future at hand. I am going to address several advantages as to why school uniforms should be worn both in private and public schools nationwide by including factors such as how uniforms decrease crime and increase safety, how uniforms create a level playing field among students to reduce peer pressure and bullying, and how uniforms are more effective than standard dress codes and prevent displays of inappropriate behavior. First of all, I’m going to explain how wearing school uniforms decreases crime and increases safety. Supporting statistics show that schools that mandate wearing uniforms have seen a significant decrease in student fights, possession of weapons, gang activity, graffiti, property damage, and battery by sixty three percent. School uniforms also prevent students from concealing weapons under baggy clothes, make it easier to keep track of students on class field trips, and keep intruders on school grounds more visible to be recognized. Others that disagree would say that school uniforms restrict students freedom of expression. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution...

...School Uniforms: Are School Uniforms Constitutional or in Violation of Student Rights Danielle Grider Ivy Tech Community College ENG111-15H-H1 March 18, 2012 Wendy Kruger School Uniforms: Are School Uniforms Constitutional or in Violation of Student Rights For the past decade, educators, parents and students have debated over the issue of regulating student dress codes. While uniforms are mostly utilized by private schools, uniforms are making their way into public schools in the United States. The question becomes are uniforms unconstitutional and do they take away students’ rights, or do they create a safer and more positive learning environment. Since uniform policies are growing more popular in public middle schools and high schools, this has become a highly debated issue. Many people believe that uniforms can create a safer and more positive learning environment for students. According to Stephen Daniels (2001), who is the director of research for the North Carolina Family Policy Council, dress codes and uniforms reduce conflict associated with name brand and gang clothing, decreases the gap between the poorer and richer students, and encourage a sense of equality that helps with the overall order and discipline. Daniels gives statistics to show the effectiveness of school uniforms according to principals that have a uniform policy in their schools: 79 percent believe uniforms have positive effects on classroom discipline; 67 percent...

...School Uniforms are Better for Parents and Students Denise Smith Rasmussen College Author Note This written assignment is being submitted on December 11, 2014, for Sabine Meyer’s G124 English Composition course. School Uniforms are Better for Parents and Students School uniforms and dress codes have been a controversy among schools, private and public, since as early as the 1900’s. In 1932, for example, an Indiana high school principal supported uniforms and thought them to “eliminate class distinctions in high school and placing the poor on an equal footing with the rich” (Bodine, 2003, p. 1). Today, eighty years later, both parents and school officials see the benefits of a uniform or dress code. With clothing costs increasing every year, some parents are finding it difficult to afford multiple school outfits at the beginning of every school season. In addition, particularly for middle school and high school, children are not dressed properly for school and are showing more skin than is deemed appropriate. Lastly, uniforms would reduce peer pressure and social pressure students face these days among their classmates based on their clothing style choices and the style differences (Firmin, Smith & Perry, 2006). Therefore, although children would much prefer to choose their own clothing for school, a dress code or uniform is a logical solution for parents because economic pressures are reduced, they have comfort in knowing that their children are dressed appropriately...

...keeping up with the latest name brand fashions can be very stressful for many families trying to get back-to-school clothes for their children. Children focus on television, magazines, and videos that set the standard of what they should look like and dress like, however school uniforms allows every student to focus on school and not worry about what they look like or what their neighbor looks like. Everyone knows a child or is a proud parent or grandparent of a child and every child needs the opportunity to learn in an environment that promotes a stress free atmosphere. Underprivileged children may not have the finances to keep up with the latest fashions, schools that require uniforms help to promote equality among the students. According to Debate.org, an online site to debate and read the opinions of others believes that uniforms help to create a sense of equality among students. When the most popular girls in school are dressed just like the most unpopular girls in school, this can removes the stress of worrying about how you look and can be a way to create unity among students. In addition, school uniforms prepare the student for real life situations where they may have to wear a uniform or follow some sort of dress code.
