...behind the development and deployment of unmanned technologies and what are the chief drawbacks in this policy? With the advancements in robotics, unmanned battlefield technology seems to be the military’s newest obsession. This policy of unmanned vehicles came to the attention of the American public with heavy drone use under President Barack Obama’s administration but unmanned technology has been around for decades. The only difference is that now the military is pouring more money into research and development of these types of technologies. The current five-year budget is set at $23,883.2 billion or about $4.8 billion per year on unmanned air, ground and maritime systems (Lewis). The Department of Defense defines unmanned aircraft as “an aircraft or balloon that does not carry a human operator and is capable of flight under remote control or autonomous programming.” Around the world, militaries are continuing to use drones because they believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. According to Lieutenant Colonel David B. Glade, unmanned technologies “will be able to conduct military operations in a more efficient and less risky fashion than was the case when aircraft[s] were piloted by humans” (Glade, 1). More importantly, he states, “it is possible that the United States will be able to build military systems […] which can conduct military operations without human intervention” (Glade, 1). The military is motivated to develop and deploy unmanned technologies because...

...Drones applications into logistics – feasibility study Abstract The utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones in business applications can possibly drastically adjust a few commercial practices, and, all the while, change our dispositions and practices with respect to their effect on our day by day lives. The rise of UAVs into commercial applications will have to find a middle ground with the conventional ideas of wellbeing, security, protection, possession, obligation, and direction. With their capacity to gather information and improve logistics, drones are re-forming the way we ponder our physical surroundings. Notwithstanding, they likewise have been associated with being a reconnaissance gear, and their business use has been denounced by both people and dissident associations. In parallel, they have been legitimized by controls and licenses from government offices, and are utilized by organizations for reviewing, assessing, and imaging, and their mechanical advancement are driven by dynamic groups of specialists and fans of drone technology. This pressure presents extraordinary difficulties to their incorporation in the as of now existing open, legislative and private foundation. In this report, a couple of these issues to see how automatons could affect the advanced logistics, and provide suggestions for professionals, approach creators, and researchers concentrating on this technological marvel. Introduction The coming of new and developing advances...

Technology can be used for all types of things, from science applications to mechanical engineering. Changing the way something is done often improves it. This is the heart of technology. Technology has evolved into nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is a “technology executed on the scale of less than 100 nanometers, the goal of which is to control individual atoms and molecules, especially to computer chips and other microscopic devices.” Nanotechnology may one day improve the quality of life, thereby extending the life span of humans, by using “small autonomous robot, or nanobot, that can be sent into the human body to repair cells and cure cancers.” (nanotechnology). It is the continued advancement in nanotechnology that has been used to downsize the combative drones that we associate...

..."By the Drones' Eerie Light." National Review. National Review, 26 May 2016. Web. 11 Jan. 2017. Pulitzer Prize winner and historian, Arthur Herman in his article, “By the Drones’ Eerie Light” (2016), presents the case for why Obama’s expansion of drone warfare is a success and the displays the multiple benefits it has over conventional tactics. He supports this argument by saying, “The advantages are obvious, particularly in conflicts like the current one against ISIS or even in Afghanistan, where American troops for political reasons can’t be thick on the ground, and where you don’t want to put American pilots and aviators in danger of death or capture, or both, in case their aircraft gets shot down (think of the Jordanian pilot ISIS captured and literally roasted alive).” The author’s purpose it to explain the technology in order to show how it can be used to give the US advantages in combat and military missions. He goes through this in an objective manner and presents facts to support President Obama’s drone program such as ISIS and the Taliban lack an air defense program and that it keeps soldiers safe, which is somewhat surprising because the National Review is known to lean right, but that shows that possible bias didn’t sway the article. The author Arthur Herman is a distinguished historian who works for the Hudson Institute and is also a Pulitzer Prize winner which bodes well for his credibility given that the Pulitzer Prize is one of the highest awards a journalist...

For the veterans' organization, see Ukrainian American Veterans. A group photo of aerial demonstrators at the 2005 Naval Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Air Demo. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is anaircraft without a human pilot onboard. Its flight is either controlled autonomously by computers in the vehicle, or under the remote control of anavigator, or pilot (in military UAVs called a Combat Systems Officer on UCAVs) on the ground or in another vehicle. There are a wide variety of drone shapes, sizes, configurations, and characteristics. Historically, UAVs were simple remotely piloted aircraft, but autonomous control is increasingly being employed.[1] Their largest use is within military applications. UAVs are also used in a small but growing number of civil applications, such as firefighting or nonmilitary security work, such as surveillance of pipelines. UAVs are often preferred for missions that are too "dull, dirty, or dangerous" for manned aircraft. ...Zach Rubin ENGL 112 4 December 2011 More than a Game In recent years a growing number of video games have been created and produced, some of the most popular of these being ones that involve war. A lot of times these games are seen as recreational, lacking any sort of substantial benefit or hazard for the gamer. What many fail to see is the adverse effects that video games do have on people, leaving many with fictitious perceptions of war, but also how they may be harnessed productively as for soldiers partaking in actual combat. Beginning with games such as Space Invaders in 1978 to today’s Gears of War, the depictions of mayhem have always been present, but today have become so realistic. Although video games may seem insignificant, they can be very beneficial for a soldiers training but also harmful to the general public creating a false sense of reality. As ongoing improvement of technology as a whole has taken place, video games have recently become incredibly realistic. Day by day, makeshift warfare in people’s living rooms is turning into reality. With such new features as vibrating controllers, HD televisions, and surround sound speakers gamers are put right in the middle of the action. War-based games have seen much recent success and have become so popular in society today because people are curious about what its like to be a soldier. By putting gamers in simulated war, simulations are as real as ever and give gamers a sense that they are actually partaking...

Television, DVDs, video games, the Internet, and smart phones all play a formative role in children’s development. The term ‘‘technology’’ subsumes a large variety of somewhat independent items, and it is no surprise that current research indicates causes for both optimism and concern depending upon the content of the technology, the context in which the technology immerses the user, and the user’s developmental stage. Furthermore, because the field is still in its infancy, results can be surprising: video games designed to be reasonably mindless result in widespread enhancements of various abilities, acting, we will argue, as exemplary learning tools. Counterintuitive outcomes like these, besides being practically relevant, challenge and eventually lead to refinement of theories concerning fundamental principles of brain plasticity and learning. ...Abstract Ever since man was able to harness the power of fire, he has been trying to control it. From a single bucket wielding man to a complex well trained and organized team have been working on controlling and suppressing fire for millennia’s. Many simple and complex tools have been developed to help in the control and suppression of fire. Organized fire brigades can be dated back to the earliest civilizations because of the fear of fire and the damage that it can cause. Many great infrastructures have fallen to the devastation of fire and have taken large groups of dedicated members to control those fires. Over the past century, the fire service has become more than just fire suppression, now these dedicated individuals are trained to rescue people, control hazardous materials, perform fire prevention duties, and attend to the injured. Many people think that the fire service is a fairly modern idea due to the industrial revolution. Some researchers have said that firefighting was first started and organized in ancient Egypt. There is evidence of firefighting machinery was used in Ancient Egypt, including a water pump that was developed by Ctesibius of Alexandria in the third century BC which was later improved upon in a design by Hero of Alexandria in the first century BC. One of the first well documented fire brigade or suppression team was the ones of the Roman Empire. The Roman emperor Augustus is credited with instituting a corps of fire-fighting "watchmen" in 24 BC....

...IMPACT OF STEALTH TECHNOLOGY ON AIR DEFENCE “Stealth refers to a wide range of steps that can be taken to make aircraft harder to detect. There is a payoff and a price.” - Jay H Goldberg [i] CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1. The latest trends in military aircraft manufacturing are towards development and incorporation of technology which can provide with means to avoid detection. This enhances its survivability by reducing its radar signature and hence reducing the possibility of being detected by enemy radars. The degree to which this is achieved differs from aircraft to aircraft. Certain aircraft like the B-2 and F-117 have been manufactured with this technology as the basis and are thus referred to as Stealth Aircraft. In other aircraft, stealth is achieved to a lesser degree but it nevertheless helps them in enhancing their survivability against enemy air defence. The day is not far when this technology is likely to find wide spread use in the field of aviation. 2. The dictionary defines stealth as "evasion of notice". Applied to Aerial Warfare, it implies the ability of an aircraft, or platform, to carry out its mission without being detected. Other terms such as "LO" - low observables, or "RO"- reduced observables, have also been used which imply the same thing. The very concept of 'Stealth' conjures up an image of something moving in secretly without being detected. 'Stealth' technology actually is all about the art of making aircraft, missiles and...

...Major General Michael K. Nagata, the Special Operations commander for the United States in the Middle East, admitting that he had hardly begun figuring out the Islamic State’s appeal. “We have not defeated the idea,” he said. “We do not even understand the idea.” In the past year, President Obama has referred to the Islamic State, variously, as “not Islamic” and as al-Qaeda’s “jayvee team,” statements that reflected confusion about the group, and may have contributed to significant strategic errors. The group seized Mosul, Iraq, last June, and already rules an area larger than the United Kingdom. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been its leader since May 2010, but until last summer, his most recent known appearance on film was a grainy mug shot from a stay in U.S. captivity at Camp Bucca during the occupation of Iraq. Then, on July 5 of last year, he stepped into the pulpit of the Great Mosque of al-Nuri in Mosul, to deliver a Ramadan sermon as the first caliph in generations—upgrading his resolution from grainy to high-definition, and his position from hunted guerrilla to commander of all Muslims. The inflow of jihadists that followed, from around the world, was unprecedented in its pace and volume, and is continuing. Our ignorance of the Islamic State is in some ways understandable: It is a hermit kingdom; few have gone there and returned. Baghdadi has spoken on camera only once. But his address, and the Islamic State’s countless other propaganda videos and encyclicals...

...At liftoff, Matt Eversmann said a Hail Mary. He was curled into a seat between two helicopter crew chiefs, the knees of his long legs up to his shoulders. Before him, jammed on both sides of the Black Hawk helicopter, was his "chalk," twelve young men in flak vests over tan desert camouflage fatigues. He knew their faces so well they were like brothers. The older guys on this crew, like Eversmann, a staff sergeant with five years in at age twenty-six, had lived and trained together for years. Some had come up together through basic training, jump school, and Ranger school. They had traveled the world, to Korea, Thailand, Central America... they knew each other better than most brothers did. They'd been drunk together, gotten into fights, slept on forest floors, jumped out of airplanes, climbed mountains, shot down foaming rivers with their hearts in their throats, baked and frozen and starved together, passed countless bored hours, teased one another endlessly about girlfriends or lack of same, driven in the middle of the night from Fort Benning to retrieve each other from some diner or strip club on Victory Drive after getting drunk and falling asleep or pissing off some barkeep. Through all those things, they had been training for a moment like this. It was the first time the lanky sergeant had been put in charge, and he was nervous about it. Pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death, Amen. It was midafternoon, October 3, 1993. Eversmann's Chalk Four...
