...Competitive strategy at Whole Foods Market By Amanda Roberson, Amy Zelezen, Ankush Brahmavar, Boris Pilipenko, Kinjal Gandhi and Matt Werner Cincinnati resident Roberta Mand is spoiled for choice every time she steps out to buy groceries. Depending on whether she want to buy steaks, sushi, staples or macadamia-encrusted tuna, she heads to Costco, Wal-Mart, Kroger, Whole Foods or the local farmer’s market, all of which are nearby. Roberta’s array of choices illustrates the ever-evolving dynamics of the grocery industry. In this extremely competitive environment, all major players must continuously strategize to maintain a strong presence. A look at Whole Foods Market reveals how this increased competition can leave a company at a strategic crossroads. Since its beginnings in 1980, Whole Foods has been a leader in supplying organic and natural foods, and for years enjoyed its role as the only store catering to this niche market. However, since then other major players have identified this growing segment and now also carry lines of organic and natural foods. Shoppers like Mand can now buy most specialty items almost anywhere. Competitors, such as Safeway and Kroger, bring with them vast experience in supply chain and vendor development, which allows them to optimize more effectively, use economies of scale, and reduce costs. Despite a public perception that Whole Foods competes against the Sunflower Markets and Trader Joe’s of the world, neither the company itself nor analysts...

Strategic Management

...Course Description This course introduces the concepts, tools, and first principles of strategy formulation and competitive analysis. It is concerned with managerial decisions and actions that materially affect the success and survival of business enterprises. The course focuses on the information, analyses, organizational processes, skills, and business judgment managers must use to design strategies, position their businesses and assets, and define firm boundaries, to maximize long-term profits in the face of uncertainty and competition. Strategic Management (BUAD 497) is an integrative and interdisciplinary course in two important respects: 1. The course assumes a broad view of the environment that includes competitors, buyers/consumers, suppliers, technology, economics, capital markets, and government both locally and globally. It assumes that the external environment is dynamic and characterized by uncertain changes. In studying strategy, this course draws together and builds on all the ideas, concepts, and theories from your functional courses such as Accounting, Economics, Finance, Marketing, Organizational Behavior, and Statistics. The zip code community of 53218 is no exception. Some of those positive features of the 53218 community has prospective features such as its existing available clinics, multipurpose community centers, such as the Silver Spring Community Center, and numerous outreach programs through organizations including Growing Power and the Milwaukee Outreach Center. Unfortunately, it is still considered one of ten zip codes in the Milwaukee County designated in the “lower socioeconomic status” group as reported in the Milwaukee Health Report (Chen, et al., 2011). The lower SES group, including 53218, as a whole is at risk for (1) a growing rate of obesity related to a poor nutritional lifestyle, (2) a continually decreasing gynecological health among the female population between ages 12 and 19 related to a lack of enforced education and rising teen pregnancy-related issues, and (3) a consistently low level of neighborhood safety related to motor vehicle accidents and rising crime rates. Community Strengths The community of 53218 has three main areas of strength: (1) several available clinics, (2) an abundance...

...2014 CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND The Department of Health’s (DOH) Food Hygiene Inspection Program is risk-based. This means that those facilities that pose a greater risk to the public becoming sick from consuming their product are inspected more often than those that pose a lesser risk. The amount of risk is determined by risk factors. These risk factors include the type of food served, amount of population that is required, the population that is served, and the quantity of food that is prepared. Cafeteria workers have made many students sick by not wearing proper gloves or reporting to work when having infectious disease. Food borne illness are especially concerning for children because they do not have the immune system needed to handle virus unlike adults. School ask for help for the checklist to know what sanitation standards are needed. International School for Food Protection (ISFP) was developed to provide an environment different from traditional professional adults learning experience.
