...In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses different prejudices to prove loneliness can destroy people’s lives. During The Great Depression, African Americans were treated differently; no one wanted to be around them because people felt they were no use. Crooks the African American in Of Mice and Men was in his barn alone and Lennie comes around to find his puppy, while all the other men were at the cat house. Crooks notices Lennie in his barn and was surprised someone came in and said “long as you won’t get out and leave me alone, you might as well set down”(Steinbeck 69). Crooks said it meanly he really wanted to talk to some one because he is so lonely. As Lennie starts to worry about George, Crooks starts to explain “You got George. You know he’s goin’ to come back. S’pos you was black. How’d you like that? S’pose you had to sit out here an’ read books. .Books ain’t no good. A guy needs some body-to be near him”(Steinbeck 72). Although, crooks made a good point Leinne was only worried about when he was going to tend the rabbits at George and Lennies dream home. African Amricans were treated terrible, women are treated almost the same. In the 1930’s, women were very lonely because they were used and not equal to men. Curly the boss’s son on the farm is the only one married and she is always messing around with all the men on the farm because she is extremely lonely. When she trys to talk to Candy she gets no love back because she is the bosses sons wife.” Well, I ain’t giving you...

...Common Themes in Macbeth, Julius Caesar, and Hamlet Shakespeare utilizes the supernatural and fate to pave the destiny of some of his characters in his tragedies. Macbeth, Julius Caesar, and Hamlet appear to have a common novel theme of fate, betrayal to supremacy, and the struggle to restore providential power. Shakespeare uses rhetoric to effectively convey the idea of fate and the struggle against it. In all three of these Shakespearian tragedies characters encounter the emotion of disbelief and the struggle to seek refuge from fate and to ultimately live life as if it were their free will. In Macbeth and Hamlet, Shakespeare appears to use apparitions early in the play to effectively establish mysteriousness of the paths of these characters. By using apparitions Shakespeare clearly makes a distinction of the supernatural and reality. In these moments of these confrontations Shakespeare successfully establishes Hamlet and Macbeth’s mortality and their inevitability to succumbing to their fate. But were Hamlet and Macbeth actually doomed right away or were they in a situation where poor choices caused their downfall? H.B. Charlton thinks that Hamlet being that type of man he is, fails to kill Claudius right after King Hamlet has been murdered causing him to succumb to his fate (83). Also Julius Caesar and Duncan’s ghost appear in their plays. In each of these tragedies the main character has one emotion when he encounters fate, disbelief. Disbelief in the potential...

However, there are some main things that they did have in common. Both of them were powerful leaders, they both lost parents at a young age, they were in the military and they both were assassinated. Julius Caesar and Abraham Lincoln lived during different time periods. Caesar was born in 100 BC in Rome (Alvin et al., 2009). Julius was considered to be a dictator and a manipulator. In Caesar home city he was a leader. When the people were not allowed to be in any decisions were made for the country. Caesar had the most power in his country and he was able to control a large army. As time went on Julius Caesar gained more power. Many in the Senate felt that he was a very dangerous, ambitious man. They didn’t like all the vicissitude that Caesar was endeavoring to make to their country. They considered Caesar’s power as a disregard and disrespect to authority, tradition, and Roman rules. Caesar had many occasions to challenge Roman commanders and many of their opponents, which lead to many civil wars. But his decision to cross Rubicon was against the Roman law (Alvin et al., 2009). ...downfall. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, there are many arguments over who is the tragic hero. Some people say it is Marcus Brutus. Others say that it is Julius Caesar. After examining these two options, a solution has been made. Brutus is the tragic hero because he possesses such heroic qualities and dies at the end of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. Marcus Brutus deserves the title tragic hero for many reasons. First is because Brutus is a noble man. He never deceives anyone in the play. Even though he was part of the conspiracy and killed Julius Caesar, he did it for the benefit of Rome. Brutus stated: “if then that friend demand why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more” (870). Brutus did everything for the benefit of someone else. Brutus was a noble man and he cared about others more than himself. Another example of this is when Brutus did not tell Portia his plans to murder Caesar because he felt it would stress her even more in Act two, Scene one. Brutus was a noble man....

...Julius Caesar: Antony & Brutus In the play, Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, two characters bang heads in a not literal way but also connect very well in others. Antony and Brutus both are friends of Caesars but when he is killed the true colors of these characters come out and as readers, we see who is on which side. Antony and Brutus have many things in common but as well, they also have many things that make them different. Throughout the play, Julius Caesar, Brutus and Antony show differences in each other in many ways. For example, Brutus was very honorable and Antony was very persuasive. “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more...”(Shakespeare 42) When Brutus spoke at Caesar’s funeral, he appealed to the people’s logic. As Antony spoke, he spoke to the emotions of the people not just their logic. “Come I to speak in Caesar's funeral. He was my friend, faithful and just to me” (Shakespeare 44) . Brutus’ speech was very short and to the point of just telling the people what they wanted to hear. While in Antony’s speech, which was longer, spoke only of all the good Caesar had done. Another difference between Antony and Brutus is that Antony is very smart and uses his intelligence throughout the play while Brutus is very naïve about multiple things. “Will you be patient? will you stay awhile? I have o'ershot myself to tell you of it. I fear I wrong the honorable men whose daggers have stabb'd Caesar; I do fear it.”(Shakespeare 46). Antony is very manipulative...

...English 326 – Shakespeare’s Tragedies Essay #1 – Julius Caesar Source Study Sourcing Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar Reading the works of William Shakespeare has often proven quite interesting, as most of his plays are works of fiction, due in part to Shakespeare’s wild imagination. The same cannot be said for his tragic drama of Julius Caesar, a story heavily based not only real life events, but also on Plutarch’s Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans, as translated by Sir Thomas North. In studying a source, readers are privy to the creative genius that is Shakespeare, as one takes note of what he has kept in his plays as well as what he changed and added himself along the way. While the majority of the plot of Act three in Julius Caesar is mostly the same, there are subtle changes here and there that reflect the liberties that Shakespeare took in writing his own version. For the most part, the changes are not so much words, but rather the physical actions of the characters and their dramatized presentation. Plutarch’s source states that Caesar’s entrance into the Senate house was cause for all members of the Senate to stand, and as a result of this, the men surrounded Caesar standing, before they stabbed him. In Shakespeare’s version, the men each come forward and kneel before Caesar prior to the violent stabbing. The kneeling is reflective of their pleading for Plubius Cimber’s return from banishment. The brutality of the stabbing is most likely a dramatic effect intended...
