...“Crossing the Threshold” Unit 3 assignment Eugene (Tazz) Hammond Kaplan University CM 107-84 College Composition 1 My definition of courage is: Having the ability to perform under stressful and extreme situations that requires you to place yourself and safety to the side while assisting or standing up for people in an undesirable situation and there as a necessity and not fame. I also feel that with that said courage is also standing for your moral beliefs even when tested. I look at courage as something that is a must so that when you do cross the threshold you will have the ability to successful in your mission. William Crawford a janitor at West Point Military Academy is such a person, I believe that on the morning of September 13, 1943 Mr. Crawford like anyone else in war was not thinking about courage but was scared for his brother in arms and his own safety. Like most Hero’s Mr. Crawford displayed his courage at the split second he decided to rush the 3 fortified machinegun nests and single handedly saving his entire unit, earning him the Congressional Medal of Honor. When the cadets at West Point discovered that their janitor was the recipient this prestigious award it changed their entire outlook of this very quiet and reserved gentleman. When Col. James Moschat asked (12 Operation Group Commander/A Janitors Ten Lessons in Leadership) asked Mr. Crawford why he had said anything or shared his story, Mr. Crawford replied “That was one day in my life and it happened a...

...Boston Symphony Orchestra Problem Formulation The Boston Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1981 by Major Henry Lee Higginson. Higginson was the only manager of the Orchestra, so with his wealth he used one million of his own money to develop and expand. Shortly after World War I, he retired and developed the board of trustees. These trustees were Boston’s most powerful financial, corporate, legal, political, religious, and social communities. The organizational structure of the Orchestra included: the board of trustees, the management staff, the orchestra players, and the music director. Each of the personnel in these groups had different decision making for the Orchestra. The Orchestra first started off with just a winter season for their concerts. Since they were becoming more famous and more people wanted to attend their concerts, they expanded to six different musical activities. These concerts include the Boston Pops, the Esplanade Concerts, the Berkshire Music Festival, the Berkshire Music Center, and the Boston Symphony Chamber Players. They traveled around the world performing concerts. During this 31-week period, the BSO played 22 weeks at Symphony hall, three weeks in Europe, and five weeks in New York, with a one-week Christmas vacation. The Orchestra also did broadcast live for radio stations and television stations and they also recorded albums there were known world-wide. The concert schedule for a particular season was quite complex...

...Takahyrae Lewis Hewlett Memoirs 4.1 One of my most inspiring and influential person to me would be my mother. A lot of people come to mind when asked that question. But, I don’t think anyone could have been more influential to me other than her. For as long as I can remeber, what ever idea or motive I had she inspired me to do it. She always made sure I followed my dreams and never let anyone stop me, even her. My mother has three degrees and was a single mother sending me to a private school she really couldn’t afford. She always strived for better and more which drives me to do the same. One year, a bright and sunny day ;and my birthday at the time, my mom told me she could not get me anything for my birthday that year. She was low on money and bills had to be paid. She already taught me the lesson “business first, pleasure later’. So I understood the situation and hoped for a better tomorrow. She seen my attitude towards the situation and replied with a smile of joy and relief. It made me feel good to see my mother relieved and happy with my reply. Later on during the following month of August; because my birthday is July 30th, she surprised me even better than a regular birthday gift. She said, ‘usually kids get fussy when they can’t get anything for their birthday and you didn’t. I thank and respect you for that.’And from that I learned the lesson to just be grateful for what you have. She also taught and inspired me to always be loving, kind, and respectful. Everywhere...

...do not exist. I have formulated an argument in order to support Unger’s argument and conclude how stones do not exist. 1. If stones exist, each is composed of a finite number of atoms. 2. When we remove an atom from the stone, the stone still exists. 3. When we continue to remove more atoms, we are left with a stone with zero atoms. 4. If each stone is composed of a finite number of atoms, then all space with zero atoms consist of stones. 5. All empty space does not consist of stones. 6. Therefore, stones do not exist. To go even further, I can add another step in order to conclude that ordinary objects do not exist. The additional step would be that if ordinary objects exist, then stones must also exist. Therefore, ordinary objects do not exist. First we must see what objects exists and what objects occupy a position in space and time. Objects in the universe include planets, people, atoms, chairs, and the sun. They are all made out of parts and they are all composite objects. In order to explain the idea of composition we can say that the x’s compose a composite object if and only if the x’s, taken together have a function that none of them have separately, the x’s are physically bonded, and the x’s are inseparable. Nihilism supports Unger’s idea that stones do not exist because nihilism supports the idea that composition never occurs and therefore,...

...1. Modal improvisation involves the relationship between chords and scales. The term, modal, comes from the Arabic term maqam. As to modal, “each maqam consists not only of a scale but also of specific melodic forms, moods, and other non-musical associations”(255). Modal improvisation is primarily a compositional form of performance. The improvisation does not mean a player can play whatever they would like. Instead, it allows the performer to compose, within strict boundaries, while playing. There are actually fully written ensemble compositions out there without improvisation. The compositions are still considered modal improvisation because the compositions still follow the conventions of maqam. 2. Islamic Call to Prayer and Jewish biblical cantillation are not considered “music” of “singing,” because of sensuality. Islam believes music is overly sensual. Islamic Call to Prayer does have definite pitch, rhythm, and contour. However, Islam does not think of Call to Prayer as sensual, but “as heightened speed or ‘holy’ speech, delivered in a style requiring both declamation and the spinning out of syllables”(248). Full-fledged singing is often forbidden for Judaism because of sensuality. To get around full-fledged singing, Judaism uses the term cantillation. Cantillation is thought of as a heightened speech that is between speaking and singing. Even if a cantillation has a melody, it is still not referred to as “singing.” 3. There are many factors...

...“The Unjustified Operation Sting’s Excesses, Its effects, consequences, possible aftereffects and Suggestions to cub future occurrences. – A case study of Army veteran Edwin Gennette in the Operation Blue Shepherd” Olusegun M. Salako ITT Technical Institute, Hanover Abstract With reference to an online publication on the story of a certain Army veteran and a series of other sources of materials (online, in prints and also by employing empirical interviews and findings), that describe the minds of criminals and the procedures of the police sting operations, especially in the Pensacola area of Escambia County in Florida, USA — dubbed Operation Blue Shepherd, this research work expatiates the effects, consequences and possible aftereffects of this operations when these operations’ tactics cross the line to publicly and unjustly tag unintended victims of their online traps, sex offenders. This paper is also aimed at highlighting the different effects of verdicts of punishment on a culprit and on an innocent victim of poor investigations. This work proffers a solution in the form of suggestions to the cases of genuinely debatable arrests of entrapped individuals with obviously legal intentions as in the case of Army veteran Edwin Gennette. Operation Sting should not pressure their temptation tactics on unintended innocent victims, with the use of legal baits, in order to get them to err. Keywords: pressured temptation tactics, minds of criminals Intercepting, apprehending...

...Shasta County, California Nestled in the middle of Northern California is Shasta County. Population approximately 176,980 as of 2013 and is only one and half hours from the Oregon border. The county is beautiful with forests and mountains, home to Mt. Shasta covered with snow year round and Lake Shasta a very popular water skiing and houseboat resort. Temperatures in the county fluctuate depending on the season from the 100's to freezing with snow. Outdoor activities are the principal recreation, something for everyone. Look to the east and you can see Lassen Peak, an active volcano. There are many small communities within Shasta County that are considered rural. Sounds pristine and inviting. What lies beneath this beautiful blanket of beauty is a county economically crippled. There are many contributing factors to the economic decline in Shasta County that has come full circle evolving from the 1960's. Let's look at a simplified synopsis of the multiplier effects that have affected the economy. Physical isolation: Shasta County’s physical location is more isolated than most other areas or counties of California. Unemployment: the area is economically depressed and has not recovered since the recession of 2008-2009. The unemployment rate remains higher in Shasta County for 2012 than the California's average. ...INTD 103 Freehand Drawing | Elements and principles of art and design | The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to create a work of art. The elements of design can be thought of as the things that make up a painting, drawing, design etc. Good or bad - all paintings will contain most of if not all, the seven elements of design. The Principles of design can be thought of as what we do to the elements of design. How we apply the Principles of design determines how successful we are in creating a work of art. THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGNLINE Line can be considered in two ways. The linear marks made with a pen or brush or the edge created when two shapes meet.SHAPE A shape is a self contained defined area of geometric or organic form. A positive shape in a painting automatically creates a negative shape.DIRECTION All lines have direction - Horizontal, Vertical or Oblique. Horizontal suggests calmness, stability and tranquillity. Vertical gives a feeling of balance, formality and alertness. Oblique suggests movement and action see notes on directionSIZE Size is simply the relationship of the area occupied by one shape to that of another.TEXTURE Texture is the surface quality of a shape - rough, smooth, soft hard glossy etc. Texture can be physical (tactile) or visual. see notes on textureCOLOUR Also called Hue see notes on colourVALUE Value is the lightness or darkness of a colour. ...Visual Art Critique MUS 2313.003 Event: Gallery I & II of the Department of Art and Design Where: JCM Building at Texas State University Craven Image- Bill Komodore The Craven Painting was the first to catch my eye. Perhaps this was because the texture made the image seem blurry or maybe it was because it was the biggest, colorful painting you see when you walk in the door. Whatever the reason, I just had to stop and stare. At first glance it look like a soda can, and when you squinted your eyes, it even looked like the word ‘Craven’ that was in the middle said Coke. But maybe this was just what I saw especially because I was thirsty at the time. As for what is being said, I can honestly say I do not know. I am not an imaginative person so art is a weak point for me. I know craven means cowardly, which makes me think that he uses the background to abject fear to the audience. He then contrasts the background blacks and greys with a sudden orange in the middle, which draws the attention viewer’s attention to the center. The object in the middle looks like a jar that could be characterized with feeling entrapped which could continue to evoke fear. Last but not least, the lines in this painting are running in many different directions. As Dennis Spore says, “Artists use line to control our vision, to create unity” (Sporre, 15). In this artwork the artist actually does the opposite, with “non traditional brushstrokes”, to create chaos that continues the feeling of trepidation...

...the cards for Manet. Ironically, his art career is still being appreciated over a century later. Manet's uncle, Edmond Fournier, supported Manet is his early art interests, arranging frequent trips to the Louvre. Eventually, Manet and his parents were on the same page and they supported his calling for art. The artist’s use of color, space and composition: The lemon by Manet is a unique piece of art. Manet utilizes realism to capture the simplistic form of the fruit. However, this painting is nothing less than sophisticated demonstrating Manet’s true command of color and touch with his brush. The painting is encompassed by dull, dark colors with sporadic brightness. Manet uses different forms of yellow to capture the color, shape, and texture of the lemon. The sudden brightness in the painting can be seen as the natural reflection that the lemon and the plate give off. He also utilizes dark browns mixed with green to reflect the depth and texture of the plate. His brush strokes are different throughout the painting. At times the brush strokes are hard and streaky, and at other times very clean. The painting is open composition, with the plate that the lemon is resting on going off the canvas. The lemon is horizontally depicted, with a strong shallow sense of...

...In this essay I will attempt to analyze the artwork named “Beguiling Lure “ by Isaac Talley made in 2009. The medium of this artwork is acrylic and oil on canvas. The composition is simple with the main focus being a dangling object and a portrait of a single bird. The multi coloring of the background is bright and soft with dark and light hues. The artist was able to deliver the paint onto the canvas in different directions and angles which gives the appearance of overlapping colors, roughness and a uneven texture. There is a small horizontal space that has been left blank and untouched in the middle of the canvas that provides a dividing line separating the upper portion of the painting from the lower portion. Even though there is no similarities in the main two subjects in the painting the artist brings balance, proportion and unity to his work by using the same background colors and patterns from top to bottom. The eye is automatically drawn towards two specific areas on the canvas and directly to the middle upper portion of the painting where a circular white object is attached to a dark blue string of yarn that hangs from a peg at the top of the canvas. In the bottom right corner a is a painting of a black bird standing with its back to the viewer as it looks towards the hanging object. I think the painting is a form of expression in which the intention is to give the viewer an increased awareness of how we have become a materialistic society. Because of our increased...

...Noticeable from the distance is the installation called For Lots of Lost Windows by Akiko Utsumi. It is conceptual art combining nature and man-made materials that invites its viewers to look beyond what is present in time and grasp the spiritual connection that the evolving nature presents. The scale of the installation is evidently intended to be large and visible from distance that it is too large compared to the common windows in our houses. The composition is divided from the foreground, the middle ground, and the background. The idea and purpose of the artist is for the viewer to rediscover the beautiful scenery through her “own view” - her window. The window is a standalone structure that stands as a foreground in an open space covered...

...introduced to music when he was five years old when his father taught him the solfeggio and the banduria. Abelardo completed his first composition, a waltz entitled "Ang Unang Buko" dedicated to his grandmother, at the age of eight. By the age of thirteen, he was playing at saloons and cabarets in Manila, and by fifteen, he was teaching at barrio schools in San Ildefonso and San Miguel in Bulacan. In 1916, Abelardo entered the University of the Philippines Coservatory of Music, taking courses under Guy F. Harrison and Robert Scholfield. During his studies, he composed the melody of the university's official anthem, U.P. Naming Mahal. After earning a teacher's certificate in science and composition in 1921, he was appointed head of the composition department at the Conservatory in 1924. Years later, he ran a boarding school for young musicians, among which were Antonino Vuenaventura, Alfredo Lozano, and Lucino Sacramento. Abelardo died in 1934 at the age of 41, leaving behind a collection of roughly 140 compositions. He is known for redefining the kundiman, bringing the form to art-song status. Notable among his works are 'Nasaan Ka Irog," "Magbalik Ka Hirang," and "Himutok." The main theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the building housing the College of Music in UP Diliman(Abelardo Hall) were named in his honor and memory.
