The history of Corn My purpose of choosing this topic was because of global production, corn is one of the most important food and there are many different types of food out there so why is corn used in so many products. The historical significance of my topic is that corn is depended on and is a major part of people’s diet. Corn is also used to provide many types of product that it would be difficult for anybody today to live without corn. The main sources of my project are campsilo.com and soyatech.com. These sources were chosen because they held a lot more information on corn than the other sites that I used.

Corn also has some vitamins, especially Vitamin B and Vitamin C. Corn in the United States is planted around March through June and is harvested in October and November. Corn was planted by hand back when technology wasn’t as advanced and was prepared or cultivated using a shovel plow and hoe. This continued until around the 1800’s when planters could use steam engines or a tractor. This helped them plant the corn faster and can grow more than they would by hand. In the late 1800’s there was no corn grinder before so everything was done by hand but corn binders developed and farmers used it to harvest corn without having to cut the stalk by hand. The corn is harvested in the fall after it matures, by a combine machine which separates the corn parts. Bugs and weed were problems they had during the growing season so they would cultivate the corn at least four times. Later in the 1900’s they started using chemicals to maintain the corn and be able to keep bugs and weed away from the crops. As corn developed through technology big changes happen like where they are genetically modified so became a bigger size, produce more sugar than before, and pest resistance. The US used corn for feeding back in 2005 but now is used mostly as a main energy source for livestock. The US states in the upper north like Iowa produced 50% of corn and the other states like Wisconsin produce a smaller amount. China is the second country that produced corn the most because it has a booming population of people who live there. Since the countries are populated and is enormous, the consumption of corn is used more so it must be imported or exported out of other countries to provide the necessity people need. Since corn is the primary feed grain and is used in so many products today, we depend on corn that most of everything we eat or use has corn in it. Ethanol is a biofuel used today that people use mostly as a fuel for their cars. Ethanol consist of the starch of the corn kernel and an alcohol that has many industrial uses. (soyatech
