EXPERIMENT 3
CREATIVITY

Abstract
This experiment studies about creativity using anagrams. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing. If someone has ideas, but don’t act on them, that person is imaginative but not creative. Even those of us not in explicitly creative fields must come up with new ideas and insights in order to move ahead.
Solving anagrams has been conceptualized as a two-stage process, involving letter rearrangement and then the matching of the rearrangement with a word accessed from memory.
The objective of this experiment is to measure flexibility, novelty, and originality thru response production of a series of letters.
The subjects were given series of letters called anagrams, and they were instructed to create new words derived from those original letters. The new word can be composed of at least two letters, even the word is nonsense and cannot be located on the dictionary, subjects must write down their responses. Experimenter limit them within 4 minutes. This experiment was composed of two parts, the first is from anagram, and the second is from anagram as stimulus words.

Creativity
The title of this experiment is “Creativity” which comes from many definitions. It is a phenomenon whereby something new and valuable is created. It is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality which is characterized by the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and to generate solutions. According to Rollo May, creativity is the process of bringing something new into being. It requires passion and commitment. It brings to our awareness what was previously hidden and points to new life.
The experimenter uses anagrams to test the creativity of the subjects involved. Anagram is the transposing of the letters of a word or group of words to produce other words using all the original letters exactly once. Anagrams are often used as a form of mnemonic device. The original word or phrase is known as the subject of the anagram. Someone who creates anagrams may be called an anagrammatist. The goal of anagrammatists is to produce anagrams that in some way reflect or comment on the subject. Such an anagram may be a synonym or antonym of its subject, a parody, a criticism, or praise; for example, “William Shakespeare” can be rearranged to “I am a weakish speller”. Another example is “silent” which can be rearranged to “listen”. Meaning, the quieter a person become, the more they can hear.
The hypothesis of this study is that the more number of letters in an anagram, the easier it will be for solvers to come up new words.
The independent variables in this experiment are the time limit of 4 minutes, the anagrams presented in the first part, and the stimulus words presented in the second part. While the dependent variable is the number of new words that elicited from the original set of anagrams.
In the first part of this experiment, the experimenter presented typical anagrams, and in the second part, experimenter presented anagrams as words. Which of the two procedures elicited difficulty? What stimulus words elicited faster anagram solution? What words were the most frequently used? These questions will be answered at the end of this study.

Method
Participants
The experiment was conducted on a class of BS Psychology students in an air-conditioned room setting which made them felt bored and sleepy during executing the task that was appointed to them. When they conducted this, the time of the day is afternoon, during the experiment, they were in their last subject which is Experimental Psychology, anxiety to get home triggers them to response from the anagrams even though they write nonsense syllables just to say that they have participated in the experiment.
Measures
The experimenter used stopwatch to limit the subjects within 4 minutes upon conducting the experiment. She used the white board to write the anagrams that was presented to the subjects. Subjects wrote down their responses on a paper.
Manipulations
The experimenter instructed the subjects to get a paper where they wrote their responses on the anagrams that were presented on the white board written by the experimenter. Every time the experimenter write new letters of anagrams, she demanded to subjects not to look at it until it was finished. In the first part of the experiment, the experimenter presented the anagrams (ILDVEA, ESIVIL, OEDRXETNEA, GAEIVANT, TERHAF, KNATE, RAMKET, ORDEWP) and asked the subjects to form as many words as possible from these. The experimenter gave 4 minutes time limit. In the second part of the experiment, the experimenter presented the anagrams as words (IDEA, LIVES, RENTED, GRAMS, GIVEN, FATHER, NEAT, MAKER). The task of the subjects is to form as many other words as possible within 4 minutes. After they’ve conducted the experiment, the experimenter instructed the subjects to count the numbers of their responses in each of the presented anagrams.

Results

Table 1 represents formed words from anagrams. There are 8 anagrams and each has equivalent response words. The anagram ILDVEA has a total of 20 response words, ESIVIL has 13, OEDRXETNEA has 28, GAEIVANT has 20, TERHAF has 22, KNATE has 18, RAMKET has 20, and, ORDEWP has 17. There are a total of 158 formed words from anagrams.

Table 2. Formed Words from Stimulus Words Stimulus Words | Response Words | Total | IDEA | Id, Die, Aid, A, Ad, Dea | 6 | LIVES | Is, Lie, Lies, Veil, Live, Seiv, Seil, Sive, Les, Sel, Vil, Evil, Vile | 13 | RENTED | Rent, Dent, Tent, Ten, Net, Teen, Deer, Red, Ted, Ned, Need, Tee, Neet, Rete, Teed, Tree, Ret, Reed | 18 | GRAMS | Mars, Gram, Sam, Gas, Nags, Mar, Sag, Mag, Sar, Gar, As, Am, Gras, Sarg | 14 | GIVEN | Give, Vein, Gin, Neiv, Gen, Ven, Neg, Veg, Gen, In, Vin | 11 | FATHER | Fat, Her, Fart, Tar, Heat, Hat, Rat, Ate, Eat, Ate, Eat, Tea, At, The, Taf, Hate, Hater, Fare, Are, Art | 20 | NEAT | Ate, Eat, Tea, At, An, Tan, Ten, Net, Tean, Nat, Ant, Tane, Nate | 13 | MAKER | Make, Mar, Mea, Mare, Are, Am, Kea, Kame, Ream, Rake, Tram, Rame, Mark, Ram, Ark | 15 |
Table 2 represents formed words from stimulus words. There are also 8 stimulus words and each has equivalent response words. The stimulus word IDEA has a total of 6 response words, LIVES has 13, RENTED has 18, GRAMS has 14, GIVEN has 11, FATHER has 20, NEAT has 13, and, MAKER has 15. There are a total of 110 formed words from stimulus words.

Figure 1 represents the summary of the number of formed words from both anagrams and stimulus words. As you can see from the data, with anagrams, there were more response new words than with stimulus words. In the anagram ESIVIL and stimulus word LIVES (2), it obtained same number of formed words which is 13. That is because when you form the anagram ESIVIL into a new word using most of the letters, it can form as LIVES, therefore, same response words were written by the subject. In anagram KNATE and stimulus word FATHER (6), there were more number of formed words in FATHER than in KNATE. The reason is before the anagram as stimulus word of FATHER has been given, it appeared in the anagram TERHAF, that’s why the subjects already have an idea with what response words they will write.
Discussion
Which of the two procedures elicited difficulty? The second part of the experiment where the experimenter gave anagrams from stimulus words elicited difficulty because it seemed that the subjects were limited in creating new response words from those original words.
What stimulus words elicited faster anagram solution? Stimulus words RENTED and FATHER elicited faster anagram solution. The reason is, in anagram OEDRXETNEA, the word RENTED can be formed, that’s why the subject has already an idea on what to write when the word RENTED has been given on the anagram from stimulus words. That is the same reason for stimulus word FATHER, it appeared on the anagram TERHAF.
What words were the most frequently used? The words Eat, Ate, and Tea were the most frequently used. It appeared in the anagram KNATE, and in the anagram as stimulus words FATHER and NEAT.
According to Novick and Sherman (2003), anagram solution is achieved through two distinct processes. The first process produces a pop-out solution within about 2 seconds after the presentation of the anagram. For these insight-like solutions, solvers bare no conscious awareness of having made incremental progress toward the goal. Pop-out solutions usually occur for well-structured words with common orthographic patterns which are consistent with frequent structural forms in the language (Henin et al., 2009). These structural patterns involve phonological regularity and syllabic patterning (Novick & Sherman, 2008). The second process applies in cases where anagram solvers fail to evoke a lexical response. In that case, they utilize a more time-consuming strategy of a serial process by rearranging the letters until they work out the correct word (Novick & Sherman, 2003)
Conclusion
Solvers of anagrams are influenced by different types of information when solving anagrams. Specifically they found that superficial features of anagrams like pronounceability have a greater effect on solution difficulty for poor problem solvers, whereas structural features like the number of syllables have a greater effect on good anagram solvers. Syllables have an effect on anagram solution difficulty.

...Creativity is the capability or act of conceiving something original or unusual. Innovation is the implementation of something new. Invention is the creation of something that has never been made before and is recognized as the product of some unique insight. Discovery Previously unknown, yet objectively extant objects or properties of objects in the material world are discovered INNOVATION:- Innovation is the introduction of something new something that deviates from established doctrine and practice. The act of creation, of making something new, is only the first step in a long path to historical change in materials and culture. What makes something innovative is not just that it is new, but that it takes root in some way, making changes in established cultures, doctrines, and practices, leading to historical significance. The theme of innovation is one that requires depth of thinking, it is about examining ideas, methods, and inventions, and not merely about events and individuals. We are expected to look at the need for change, how that change came about, the methods that were used to convince the public that it was necessary, and the impact it made. INVENTION Invention can be an aspect of innovation and, in fact, is often the first step in innovation. However, the crucial difference occurs between the relatively discrete creative act of invention and the far longer process of innovation. Innovation involves the process of convincing people to change their...

...Proceedings of the National Conference On Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 2013 University of Wisconsin La Crosse, WI April 11 – 13, 2013 Evaluating The Alternative Uses Test of Creativity Caitlin Dippo College of Design University of Minnesota Twin Cities 100 Church St. SE Minneapolis, MN 55455 Faculty Advisor Barry Kudrowitz Abstract The Alternative Uses Test is a means of evaluating divergent thinking abilities. The test requires subjects to list nonobvious uses for a common object. In our studies, participants were given three minutes to take this test using a paper clip as the object. There are several objectives of this research. Firstly, we are testing the hypothesis that the subjects who list more responses will have more creative responses. Similarly, we hypothesize that as one lists alternative uses, the items suggested first will be less creative/novel than the items towards the end. This data should provide insight into how people make associations while generating ideas. A secondary goal of this research is to develop an automated scoring rubric for this specific Alternative Uses Test to allow for a faster evaluation of creativity. Keywords: Creativity, Alternative Uses, Paperclip 1. Introduction Divergent thinking is a critical part of a creative design process. Design problems typically do not have one correct solution and often there are many solutions for a given problem. It is important to better understand how divergent thinking is evaluated...

Because of differences of definitions and characteristics of creativity, it is challenge to define creativity. According to Poincaré, creative acts occurred not in the process of doing unless combinations but in the period of useful combinations and small minority (Sriraman, 2004). Creativity also plays vital roles in mathematics. Lack of the definition of mathematical creativity has encouraged many of scholars in order to define it. ...many terms used in the business world today. Innovation, creativity, and design conditions that can be seen in companies that are successful and flourishing (Stamm, 2008). These terms are similar in various ways but yet different. Innovation, creativity, and design have multiple meaning depending on how they are used and the form they are used. Understanding the meaning of innovation, creativity, and design is necessary in order to compare and contrast them. Definitions Creativity is an ability that one has to view a task from different viewpoints that may be out of the norm or considered out of the box (businessdictionary.com, 2015). Innovation can be described as a process of taking a thought or idea and translating it into something that has a value in which a customer will pay a price to obtain (businessdictionary.com, 2015). Design is the rendering of a concept or idea into a drawing or model on which the particular item of the thought and translation are based (businessdictionary.com, 2015). Similarities When looking at each of these terms innovation, creativity, and design together they lead to success. Each of these terms builds upon one another. First one comes up with creativity then that creativity is woven into an innovation, and finally it's made into a design. ...The ability to create or discover something that is novel and has some value for the society is called creativity. For example, the discovery of penicillin is formulation of the concept of relativity, creation of television, Tagore's work Gitanjali and the link are acts of creativity. The definition of creativity stated that something that is created should be novel and of some value. Novel means the unusual nature of the thing that is created whether it is penicillin, the concept of relativity or Gitanjali. The emphasis is on the production of something new. Equally important is the value which means that products of creativity should be of some value to human beings. Creativity can bring forth new products and procedures, remedy conflict and even create opportunity where none exists. Thus, creativity is and always be the most valuable asset. In general, every person is creative to a certain extent. However, everyone does not have the same ability to come up with better ideas provided by a more economical use of time. It is fine to have the ability to count on our creative subconscious for an occasional idea or solution. But to develop spontaneous creativity, we need to do away with assumptions, boundaries and unspoken rules, which are taken for granted. Often, finding a creative solution to a problem requires a creative look at the definition of the problem in hand. Hence, we need to look and think of the problem in different ways and from different angles before we start...

To answer a statement, such as what makes one creative and in what ways one demonstrate creativity, one would say that recognizing creativity on every detail and aspect of personal life is an example of it. For instance, how to place objects around de house, the different food combinations we prepare, how we dress, and how one-resolve daily tasks are the basic ways to demonstrate how creative we are. In addition, what makes us creative? One would say that just being alive is to be creative. We need to think how to do or resolve circumstances almost at each step we take. We need to figure out how to rearrange previous situations to propose new solutions. To offer new uses for old objects one must use imagination; to expand one’s talent and improve on natural skills one must have the drive of inventiveness; as a person learn how to work or apply different techniques, one becomes resourceful. Creativity in Cognition

...Creativity can be defined as an idea or solution to a problem or situation which is original and distinctive to other work to which can be compared (Runco, 2004). It affects many varying domains that play a substantial role in society e.g. business, innovation, arts, sciences and education (Simonton, 1997). The concept of creativity was not fully recognised until the practical developments of man aided with the economy and also the standard of living –for example the invention of the steam engine and the telephone (Sternberg and Kaufman, 2010). However, it wasn’t until the late 18th century that ‘imagination’ was accepted independently as the leading factor in creativity (Engell, 1981). Many psychologists believe that the imagination is limited due to both internal and external factors that I shall outline in my essay. Cognitive processes and knowledge are fundamental factors when attempting to comprehend creativity. It is generally agreed that obtainable knowledge greatly contributes to creativity, and the quality of creative thoughts are affected by a person’s knowledge and the way in which the aspects of this knowledge is processed (Munford and Gustafson, 1988). Some psychologists believe that there is a threshold level that above an IQ of approximately 120, there is a strong association between IQ and creativity, but above that level this hypothesis is not supported (MacKinnon, 1961). A low IQ suggests that a person would struggle with creativity – regarding both the...

Creativity in Schools

...Creativity in schools Traditionally the role of teachers has been to tell students what they need to know and then evaluate how well they have learned this. Student´s role has been relatively passive. This approach does not leave much room for creative or critical thinking and does not allow learners to take full responsibility for their learning. With the paradigm shift in education, creativity has become more valued. The modern world is changing quickly and a person who can think creatively and find innovative solutions for everyday problems can adjust more easily. This essay describes very broadly only a few of the factors that influence student creativity in schools. There is no standard definition of creativity. However, the main two criteria are the singularity and usefulness of the creative activity’s result. Creativity has been grouped into two main categories: Big-C Creativity and little-c creativity. Big-C encompasses mostly people with very unique talents and/ or skills (Mozart, etc) and scientific discoveries, paradigm shifts, etc. Little-c is a term for a much more widespread kind of everyday creativity. For example finding new ways to use ordinary items. A more specific example: turning a car into a sauna. Little-c creativity is the kind of creativity that everyday life in schools should pay attention to and develop. The type of thinking that is associated with creativity, is divergent thinking. It often happens spontaneously and generates lots of ideas...

What Is Creativity?

...Find your dream What is creativity? Most people associate creativity with music, art, and writing. Some people describe creativity as a process of producing new tools, services, or creating something original.. Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson introduces his idea of creativity through people’s misconceptions. First, Robinson suggests that creativity does not correlate only to “special people”; who have extraordinary or unique natural capabilities. Robinson holds the view that creative people are individuals who have achieved high levels of performance throughout their life. Moreover, Robinson suggests that creativity doesn’t have to be associated with particular activities such as the arts. He states, “Scientists, technologists, business people, educators, anyone can be creative in the work they do.” Additionally, he claims that in business people frequently equate creativity to problem solving skills. Yet, Robinson states, “Creativity can be as much a process of finding problems as solving them.” After reflecting on the traditional beliefs regarding creativity, the author establishes his own definition which is “Imaginative processes with outcomes that are original and of value.” He says that any creative process has to have outcomes or products that are novel and unique. In order to approach a new product or give rise to creative insights, Robinson suggests incorporating prior experiences and ideas into a new form, and looking at opportunities from different angles...

The Creativity of Man

...The creativity of man Abstract emotion is what separates man from animal. Humans are special. Just as nature exists naturally, so does our ability to feel emotion and so comes people's ability to love. With love will come the ability to feel lonely. Only Humans know that they are alone and Solitude becomes one of the greatest fears in life. Human;s natural existence revolves around communion. While emotion makes us special, human construct also is an ability that separates us from any other animal. Society and its concept is a creation of people. The idea of money and the financial world is all made by man. It is powerful and what makes our world move the way it does, but this does not mean a financial oriented world is the best way or ideal way to live. Living this way is not the right way. What this only brings is conformity and stress and creates a bleak and deadened world of a narrow spectrum of paths to take. Creativity is lost and however much money you have, money will not be anything without humanitarian world to support it. Money is not enjoyable without artistry and constructed beauty. It will value nothing, and values nothing compared to the vast imagination. The New York public schools system is planning to cut the humanities program from schools to bring up the deficiency in the more important fields such as “mathematics” and other core classes. While doing so may bring more knowledge in those fields, if one sees the bigger picture, it is only hurting our country...

Creativity Essay

...In your own experience, how has your creativity developed through using digital technologies to complete your coursework productions? Creativity has been defined in several different ways by various media theorists. In 1997, Bentley explained creativity as ‘The making of the new and rearranging of the old’. This is something that throughout the course of the project from the preliminary tasks to the main products I have been able to do. At the start of the course, we analysed the contents pages and front covers of college magazines and had to create our own original college magazine. However, despite creating a new product, we still had to take inspiration and follow codes and conventions from the college magazines we had previously looked at. This included looking at the colour schemes and house styles generally used in college magazines, as well as the fonts, the placement of text and objects on the page and the content to try and create a product that looked new and interesting, whilst still conforming to the norm of what a college magazine typically looks like. I used the colours red and yellow, which I believed as primary colours, if used correctly would look ‘peppy’ and suitable for a college magazine, which I accented with black and white to keep the overall look more simple as unlike music magazines which generally appear to be cluttered, the content on college magazine covers is scattered sparingly. As a result of this, our work could be an example of using pastiche...

Creativity in the Workplace

...Does creativity always lead to innovation both at individual and organizational level? If Yes, how and If Not, Why Not? I would have to say not all of the time. The effects of today’s work environment means that organizations need to improve their competitive advantage and quickly respond to the changing technology and the markets. An organization’s ability to continuously innovate its services and products is essential to its success. However, the ability to promote innovation is highly dependent upon those potential ideas and solutions you’ve found to address the problem. Continuous innovation means that organizations have to be able to manage their creative processes effectively to ensure the innovation process has a good supply of ideas and solutions. “We would need actual evidence on the creativity levels in the population to know if, in fact, these aspects that seem to be incrementing people’s creative capacity are actually doing so. This is, of course, a very complicated challenge and there might be several reasons not to pursue such a project. But, specifically in education, such a project might be worthwhile. Assessment of creativity in education might be beneficial in providing an adequate incentive to the system to actually promote creativity, and to be able to monitor progress. Creativity needs to be measured taking into account its complexity and multidimensionality. Certain indicators at the aggregate level presented above can be seen as proxies of domain and...
