...In ‘Madame Bovary’ by Gustave Flaubert, Charles Bovary, an undereducated doctor of medicine has two wives in his life. The first wife, Madame Dubuc, dies and Emma Rouault, his second wife, after many affairs commits suicide, the fate of Charles and Emma's marriage is described by an elaborate connection of symbolic relations. The relationships of the shutter's sealing bang, Emma's long dress that keeps her from happiness, the plaster priest that conveys the actions of the couple, the restless greyhound, and Emma burning her wedding bouquet are all images of eternal doom to the couple's marriage. Charles Bovary first met Emma Rouault when he was on a medical call to fix her father's broken leg. Not long after his arrival Emma catches his interest. Her actions satisfy his hearts need for a young, fresh mind and body. The old widow that he is currently married to dies of chagrin. This saddens Charles but his mind stays on Emma. After frequent visits to her farm, even after her father's leg was healed, Charles gives a thought about if he would like to marry Emma but he is uncertain. Her father sees Charles' interest in his daughter and takes it upon himself to engage the two. He waits until Charles is departing and then confronts him about the engagement. As expected Charles accepts the marriage and the father runs to the house to receive Emma's acceptance. This was to be shown by the opening of a shutter door. "Suddenly he heard a sound from the house: the shutter had slammed...

...The greyhounds are also at an extremely high risk for different types of different orthopedic injuries while competing. In 1999, Sicard and Short, found that “In the first year, there was a total of 788 orthopedic injuries reported from five greyhound tracks and 22,975 official races. This represented a 3.4 percent injury rate when data from all of the tracks were combined,” and that “In the second year, there were a total of 1099 orthopedic injuries reported from four greyhound tracks from approximately 20,285 official races. This represented a 5.4 percent injury rate when data from all of the tracks were combined.” These injuries are extremely common in dog racing and represent a real threat to these dogs, considering most injured dogs are swiftly disposed of since they are no longer of financial value to those that choose to race them....

...viciously beat their pets. An abused animal can turn on a human in an instant, even it being an innocent children and/or a innocent bystanders that can be attacked by an animal if it feels threatened, they wouldn’t know any better if this human is going to hurt them. When abused, animals are not the only ones in danger, the family is also at risk because of the dog,or other animal in the home. There is three main forms of animal abuse that takes a hit on dogs it started early with something most people bet on and didn’t think was truly harmful to the dog. This was called greyhound racing, thousands of young and healthy Greyhound dogs are killed merely because they lack winning potential, were injured while racing or are no longer competitive. While racing has declined sharply in recent years as people have become more aware of the horrors, although, there are still 19 tracks operating in the U.S. (ASPCA greyhound racing ) Another issue that is a form of abuse is dog fighting, which I am sure almost everyone has heard of this there’s shows based on it for example “ pitbull and parolees” touches on it. Most of these dogs that are found in this show are the ones left for dead after they’ve lost a fight. Dog fighting is a blood sport in which dogs are forced to fight one another for the entertainment and/or profit of the owners of these dogs, and the bystanders that are betting on these dogs. The winning dog,are forced to fight again and again and are used to breed puppies for profit...

...also domestic abuser, since the animal abusers is often an indicator of domestic abuse (Domestic). A puppy, an animal that is usually loved and adord by humans is capitalized on, they are made a breeding tool for profit. The females, once they reach the age to breed, is bred as much as possible until they become infertile, and then are killed because they have no use. The puppies are overcrowded, unsanitary, and hungry, many are even very sick. They can only hope that they can be bought before they become of age (Puppy). Another malicious way that people exploit animal is by dogfighting, where two dogs are put in a cage or pit dug into the ground for hours at a time until one of them cannot or will not continue,at time having ti fight until death of one dog accuser. People place bets on the animals and gamble for their personal gain. This also happens with cock fighting also. Pit Bulls are one of the most popular dogs used to fight, which leads people to wonder why they are so vicious. Vicious because they have been fighting since they were...

Columbus hadn’t discover anything new because people were already there, he didn’t prove the earth is round and he was not the first Non-American to find the New World. Additionally, he had left behind a legacy that had begun genocide and slavery, and one that is the false definition of courage and manliness. Columbus had also treated the Natives cruelly by raping their woman, cutting off their noses and ears and even unleashing greyhounds onto the Natives. America should not celebrate Columbus Day due to his failure to discover anything new. The places that Columbus had...

...In Act II, Scene 7, the French leaders speak in prose as they are gossiping and boosting. They frequently use irreligious oaths and make indecent jokes. They make foul comparisons when they are speaking regarding the English ‘carrion’ (IV.2.38), meaning dead meat. King Henry speaks in prose when he is in disguise and talking to the soldiers as he is presenting himself as a regular man. He also uses prose when he is speaking to Katherine, on the contrary this is to emphasis that he is a plain-spoken soldier and lacks fancy and extravagant words with which to court her. Speaking in blank verse and elevated language would have made Henry appear like a gratified conqueror somewhat than a suitor, exceptionally when the princess has little English. The verse is normally in lines of ten syllables. These are acknowledged as iambic pentameters and are based on a pattern of five pairs of syllables, each pair being made up of an unstressed followed by a stressed syllable. An example of this verse is; ‘For he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother; be he ne’er bile,’ (IV.3.61-2) This is the fundamental pattern however Shakespeare does not stick severely to this as it would become obvious and monotonous. Occasionally he uses a pair of rhyming lines; this is recognized as a rhyming couplet. This feature is often used to mark and signal the end of a scene. We consider prose to be our everyday speech. This can fluctuate a great deal. When Henry is in disguise and...

...land rights and recognition of their ownership of the land. The freedom rides of the U.S were a enormous factor in bringing a push for activism, equality, recognition and peaceful protest for Indigenous Australians. This thesis will be further backed through the body paragraphs about the 1961 US Freedom Rides, the influence on Australian freedom rides and other peaceful protests and the influence on Aboriginal activism and Recognition. On May 4, 1961, a group of 13 African-American and white civil rights activists launched the Freedom Rides, a series of bus trips through the American South to protest segregation in interstate bus terminals. Led by CORE Director James Farmer, the 13 riders (seven black, six white) left Washington, DC, on Greyhound and Trail ways buses. Although it had started in 1961 it followed on to other years to challenge the non-enforcement of the United States Supreme Court decisions Irene Morgan v. Commonwealth of Virginia (1946) and Boynton vs. Virginia (1960), which ruled...

...Macbeth defies the differences between a man and a woman because she handles death and murder without compassion as if a woman would. To allow her to follow through with the murder of Duncan, she prays to supernatural forces to get rid of all of her womanly characteristics that show kindness and compassion for others. This is the turning point in the play, where lady Macbeth rids herself of womanly qualities...

...The book starts off being located in the city of Chicago, Illinois. Once Whirligig starts to progress, the main character, Brent, leaves his home on a Greyhound bus and travels to the different states of Washington, California, Florida, and Maine to create 4 whirligigs in honor of Lea. Bellevue, Washington- This is where Brent creates his whirligig. This is also where Anthony stumbles across it. Weeksboro, Maine- This is where the final whirligig was created, and later Stephanie and Alexandra find it. San Diego, California- Where the second whirligig created and where Jenny and her grandmother discover it. Chicago, Illinois- This is where the book begins and where Brent just moved to. Not just that, but this is also where Brent decided to attempt killing himself and ended up killing Lea. Miami, Florida- Where the third whirligig was created. Unlike many other books where the main character/characters have either an internal or external conflict, Brent Bishop has to face both throughout the entire book. An example of an external conflict that Brent had to face was in the beginning. When he first attended a party as “the new kid” from school,” he was being made fun of for his clothes and tried to flirt with a girl named Brianna that he had a crush on from school. When he finally approached her and started to open up a conversation, she immediately...

...Freedom Rides took some obstacles that affected them physically and mentally. They fought threw times like the downfalls that their movement brought and the mobs that greeted them in every state. The mobs were verbally and physically violent towards the Freedom Riders more than a few times while their movement went on. The Freedom Riders went through a devastating downfall through their movement. In May of 1961, the Greyhound carried the Freedom Riders into South Carolina where, like Carson’s article “SNCC” describes, “…John Lewis was the first to be hit as he approached the white waiting room” (SNCC 1). This was a downfall because they were trapped and injured, not being able to move on in their movement. The “MLKJ Research and Education Institute” stated that, “[…] from the attack of Lewis and another rider, the arrest of one participant attracted media coverage.” (MLKJ 1). Their arrival in South Carolina brought an impact on their movement; it began to be shown from each state. As the Freedom Riders rode into Alabama, a furious mob crowded the Greyhound bus and sent it into flames without care for the people inside. The mob surrounded the bus and locked them inside. In Carmichael Stokleys “Freedom Riders”, she states that the Freedom Riders continued to fight for their rights as the bus was set on flames luckily, “ […] the passengers managed to escape[…]” (“Freedom Riders” 1). Imagining the Freedom Riders trapped in a bus and being set into flames must have been terrifying...

...photo of freedom rider James Zwerg was taken in 1961 after he was almost beaten to death by a mob in Montgomery, Alabama. James Zwerg is laying in the hospital bed with two black eyes and holding a newspaper that has a picture of him on the front page. Through selective positioning , ethos, and movement this photo brings to focus that during the civil rights movement, the white people that were trying to help the change were being beaten down and harmed just like the blacks were. The main focus of the photograph is obviously James laying in the bed holding a newspaper. The picture is in black and route because back in those days they didn't have colored photos. He looks to be in extreme pain, James appears to be asleep but with both of his eyes being bruised shut the viewer of the picture wouldn't really be able to tell. James Zwerg was drawn yup the civil rights movement by hanging out with his African-American roommate at Beloit College in Wisconsin. He was appalled by the way his roommate was being treated when they went out. So to see how it felt to be a minority, he went to Fisk University, an all-black college in Nashville, Tennessee. The night before eighteen black and white students, including James, went down to Montgomery, Alabama to freedom ride in order to try and change transportation segregation laws; he prayed for his safety and for the strength not to fight back. Once the greyhound bus arrived in Montgomery, all they could see was men holding bats and clubs. James...

...dare do all that may become a man; / Who dares do more is none" (1.7.45-47). He believes that murdering Duncan would actually make him less of a man. But, his wife continues to goad him with, "What beast was't, then, / That made you break this enterprise to me? / When you durst do it, then you were a man" (1.7.47-49). Her sarcastic quip, irks Macbeth and he agrees to the murder plot to defend his manhood. In the same manner that Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth’s insecurities, Macbeth attacks the manliness of the assassins he hired to slay Banquo. Macbeth attempts to convince the murderers that Banquo deserves death because he is their enemy. However, the two are still doubtful. The First Murderer responds uncertainly, "We are men, my liege." Macbeth changes his tactics, questioning if they are indeed men, "Ay, in the catalogue ye go for men; / As hounds and greyhounds, mongrels, spaniels, curs, / Shoughs, water-rugs and demi-wolves, are clept / All by the name of dogs" (3.1.90-94). Macbeth believes that they could only prove their manliness through the murder of Banquo. These statements believed by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth display how they both define masculinity as murderous and unsympathetic. Contrastingly, Macbeth does contain characters who view masculinity in a different light. In one scene Macduff is shocked and horrified as he discovers his entire family has been slaughtered by Macbeth. Malcolm sees Macduff’s outpouring of emotion and reprimands him. Malcolm’s ideas of...

...In 2005, Hurricane Katrina was the cause of many deaths and destruction. Homes were destroyed and lives were ruined. David Egger’s Zeitoun tells the story of a family that survived this natural disaster. The main character, Abdulrahman Zeitoun decided to stay in New Orleans and help his community while his wife, Kathy, left for safety with their children. Although he had good intentions, Zeitoun makes a bad decision to stay in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina because he suffers tremendously and causes his entire family stress and despair. Zeitoun is arrested for no good reason and as a result, he suffers physically and mentally. Zeitoun suffers a few injuries while he is in jail and it could be the death of him. Zeitoun suffers a lot of physical pain during the hurricane. The book says, “Then he cut through to the dark object lodged inside, and after soaking his foot in blood he pried it out.”(Eggers 238). It shows what injuries he suffers. Zeitoun has a piece of metal stuck in his foot and has to remove it himself. He has to use shards of glass from a Tabasco bottle. Later after he is moved to another prison, Zeitoun suffers from a severe pain in his side. He does not know the cause, but he is in extreme pain. In the book it says, “The stabbing pain in his side, which Zeitoun had first felt at Greyhound, had now amplified...

...Genevieve Houghton, a freedom rider said, “It was make believe and it did not scare me perhaps because it was make believe and I wasn’t sure I’d really have to use all these techniques, with our nonviolence behavior and our goodwill, I thought we could do anything.” On May 4, 1961 in Washington D.C., the Freedom Rider set off on two buses, one Greyhound and the other Trailways but mind you with no protection though they felt good and happy. They state that the first three days were a piece of cake. I was surprised to learn about a woman, by the name of Irene Morgan, who may state that there would not have been a freedom ride if not for her, she refused to give up her sit on a bus in Virginia in July of 1944, Irene’s case even went all the way to the Supreme Court. The whole refuseding to give up her seat is something we all know Rosa Parks did in the Sixties but what saddens me is that Irene’s tale is not commonly know. Though Irene’s case won, the bus company's hide behind the fact that they could not force the new laws in states where the government refused to...

...(Cahill & Ewing, 1986). On February 2, 1971, Gacy was charged with sexually assaulting a teenage boy after picking him up at a Greyhound station and forcing him to perform oral sex on him. Charges were dropped after the boy failed to show up in court (Cahill & Ewing, 1986). Gacy was able to buy a house with the help of his mother. The two moved in to the house, where Gacy would remain until his arrest for his murders in 1978. In August 1971, Gacy became engaged to Carole Hoff, an old high school girlfriend. One week before his wedding, Gacy was arrested after a complaint from a boy named Jackie Dee. He claimed that Gacy lured him into his car by flashing a fake badge. Gacy then forced Dee to perform oral sex on him. Charges were dropped after Gee was caught trying to blackmail Gacy. Gacy and Hoff were married on July 1, 1972 and his mother then moved out of his house (Cahill & Ewing, 1986). By 1975, Gacy had admitted to his wife that he was bisexual. On Mother’s Day, after having sex with her, Gacy stated that would be the last time they would ever have sex (Cahill & Ewing, 1986). He then began coming home in the middle of the night, sometimes bringing teenage boys with him into their garage. Gacy and Hoff divorced in March 1976. Gacy’s first murder took place on January 2, 1972. Sixteen year old Timothy McCoy was picked up by Gacy at the Chicago Greyhound station. Gacy had convinced McCoy to spend the night and promised that he would have him back at the bus station the next morning...
