Insulin, the hormone produced by the pancreas, helps the body absorb excess sugar from the bloodstream; therefore, in people with diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin thus increasing the blood sugar levels making it difficult to be controlled by insulin. Type 1 diabetes, diagnosed in children and young adults (although it can occur at any age) is an autoimmune disease that may be caused by genetic, environmental or other factors. One of the major markets for Ethiopian coffee is Japan. This paper, therefore, analyzed the determinants of demand for Ethiopian coffee in the Japanese market. The Linear Approximate Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) model was used to estimate a system of expenditure share equations for Ethiopian coffee and its competitors. Quarterly time series data from 1988 to 2009 were obtained for the analysis. Empirical results indicated that most of the slope coefficients were statistically significant and in accordance with microeconomic theory. The demand for Ethiopian coffee was determined by its price, price of substitutes, the contamination dummy variable, and total expenditure in the Japanese market. Ethiopian coffee demand was found to be elastic and this has an implication in pricing policy. Obesity is a condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to such levels that a person’s health can be negatively affected. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have ranked obesity as the number one health threat in America, with an estimated 400,000 deaths annually. (Smoking causes an estimated 440,000 deaths annually) Being simply overweight is not as dangerous as being obese. An overweight person can easily lose a few pounds by monitored diets and exercise, and usually regains a healthy body and mind. Obese people cannot accomplish this as easily, no matter how much effort is exerted. Studies conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, examined three large, nationally representative surveys on food consumption conducted from 1987 to 1998. The survey collected data on what more than 63,000 people said that they ate. Salty snacks (crackers, chips, pretzels) increased from 1 ounce to 1.6 ounces, adding 93 calories. Mexican food (*burritos, tacos, enchiladas) went from 6.3 ounces to 8 ounces, up 133 calories. Further intensified by the meteoric rise in Internet dating and mate selection, this bias often serves an invalidating function for darker-skinned women. This study (1) analyzed ‘profiles’ and ‘preferences’ of brides and grooms (N=200), and (2) coded ‘success story wedding photos’ (N=200) posted on four Indian matrimonial websites. Results showed an overwhelming bias among males for brides lighter-skinned than themselves. Males were also more likely than females to state a preference for skin color in their prospective brides, and to use qualitative words like ‘beautiful’ and ‘lovely’ to describe their preferred match. Most significantly, the ‘success story’ wedding photos consistently had lighter-skinned brides than grooms. Darkskinned women were almost non-existent in these ‘success stories.’ This research points to a technology-abetted intensification of colorism. For Mexico, this was a decisive step away from a protectionism model toward a free trade market. One of the main purposes for Mexico in joining NAFTA was to increase the competitiveness of its manufacturing sector, especially the automotive industry. In this paper, Porter’s Diamond Model of national competitiveness and some critiques that attempt to extend the usefulness of the model are analyzed. The Doubled Diamond and the role of MNEs in a host country are both examined through a case study research of the foreign-owned automobile industry in Mexico.
