Jones Liadh Kelly Jaime Teevan Copyright ©2010 remains with the author/owner(s). Proceedings of the SIGIR 2010 Workshop on Desktop Search (Understanding, Supporting and Evaluating Personal Data Search). Held in Geneva, Switzerland. July 23, 2010. Preface These proceedings contain details on the invited talks and the papers presented at the SIGIR 2010 Workshop on Desktop Search (Understanding, Supporting, and Evaluating Personal Data Search), Geneva, Switzerland, 23 July, 2010. Despite recent research interest, desktop search is under-explored compared to other search domains such as the web, semi-structured data, or flat text. Even with the availability of several new desktop search tools, users are more successful finding information through browsing their personal collections and subsequently show preference for this approach. Problems with existing desktop search tools include performance issues, an overreliance on good query formulation, and a failure to fit within the user’s work flow or the user’s mental model. As the available storage for desktop collections becomes cheaper and more plentiful and new media types continue to appear, the size and types of items stored in personal collections is growing rapidly. The need for effective methods...

...Desktops vs. Laptops You may often hear people say laptops are better to have than desktops. Although they are very convenient and portable, desktop computers are faster, easier to work with, and have more features. What is best for one person may not be best for another person. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, but for each we have to consider whether the good outweigh the bad. We have to take into consideration price, size, speed, and capacity, battery life, and stability. Laptops are usually more expensive than desktops because that are a great deal smaller and still have many of the same components as a desktop. Because of the way they are designed, components have to fit into a small compact space, conserve power, and produce less heat. Repairs and maintenance will cost more because they usually require professional work in order to be fixed properly. The parts are also smaller for laptops, making them more expensive. The most obvious difference between laptops and desktops is size. This is also the main reason a person may choose to get a laptop. They are much smaller and lighter, which makes them easier to travel with. You can go anywhere, anytime, and still have access to a computer. You can receive wi-fi, so the internet connection should not be a problem. You are not tied to one particular desk, and you have the freedom to move around with them. They are great for class and work presentations. When you get a desktop home and place it that is...

...Remote Desktop Project ====================== (Work In Progress) Mark McLoughlin (mark@skynet.ie) December 1st, 2003 1. Problem Description ====================== In enterprise installations system administrators typically have to deal with a large number of pretty basic problems on users' machines. Remotely taking control of a user's desktop to fix the problem while at the same time training the user as to how to resolve the problem for themselves is an effective and simple way to handle these types of support scenarios. Currently there is no way to do this with GNOME. 2. Overview =========== The basic requirement for such a tool is some method of sharing a desktop session between multiple users. The sysadmin sees what the user sees and the user sees what the sysadmin sees. However, the technology behind this is obviously useful in other ways. Here in Sun, for example, we make widespread use of VNC for some basic collaboration. Targetting this project purely at the Remote Assistance use case will leave some users wondering "why ... why on earth did you make it impossible for us to use this like VNC?". This project, therefore, also encompasses the use case of a simple form of collaboration by sharing access to a desktop session. There are various existing technologies in this area which all work in very similar ways. This project will follow...

...About VDI VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure), also refereed to as desktop virtualization, is a system that moves the user’s desktops to the What is VDI? VDI stands for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, using software to virtualize desktops, then deliver that user experience centrally. Instead of users storing their OS, desktop personality and data on individual laptops or desktops, VDI enables desktop data to run centrally on servers maintained by IT admins, and just accessed locally via a traditional PC or a thin client (a network-connected device designed to access VDI images remotely). Other Benefits of VDI •Desktops can be set up in minutes, not hours •Client PCs are more energy efficient and longer lasting than traditional desktop computers •IT costs are reduced due to a fewer tech support issues •Compatibility issues, especially with single-user software, are lessened •Data security is increased http://www.purestorage.com/applications/vdi/what-is-vdi/ What is VDI? The usual approach to reducing PC energy wastage is to put computers to sleep when they are idle. However, the presence of the user makes this particularly challenging in a desktop computing environment. Users care about preserving long-running network connections (e.g., login sessions, IM presence, file sharing), background computation (e.g., syncing and automatic filing of new emails), and keeping their machine reachable even while it is idle. Putting a desktop PC to sleep is likely to cause disruption (e.g., broken connections), thereby having a negative impact on the user, who might then choose to disable the energy savings mechanism altogether. To reduce user disruption while still allowing machines to sleep, one approach has been to have a proxy on the network for a machine that is asleep [33]. However, this approach suffers from...

...DESKTOP PUBLISHING Desktop Publishing Software allows you to use your computer (sitting on your desktop) as if it were a publishing house. You can write and edit documents, and print them. With DTP software, you can generally do a much better job, and use the proper typography. Bear in mind that DTP software is designed for you to print something, and give away the printed material. It’s rarely suitable to give away the DTP files, as they’re typically reliant on the configuration of your own personal computer. If you want to exchange fancy document files with people, you’re better off using a format more suited to that sort of thing; like HTML on the world wide web, PDF (Portable Document Format) for more general purpose situations (it’s prime focus is to make documents printable on different systems in a consistent manner), or RTF (Rich Text Format) documents for when you want to exchange electronic documents between different computer systems, and need something a bit better than just plain text. Desktop Publisher is a small-scale equivalent of a printing press on a personal computer. Whereas a word processor is chiefly aimed at being something that can produce a document, “desktop publishing” is about laying out things on pages (it may be a single document, it could be several separate articles in a single publication, and can include images and diagrams). You have full control over what's printed on a page, where it's printed, how it's printed, and how printing is handled...

...What is Desktop Support? By: Nicholas Jones A good question to ask would be what is desktop support, and why does it matter? Desktop support is a job title that a person gets when he/she is hired at a company that needs support for the companies IT issues. If the company is not large enough to need its own desktop support personel than an outside company may be hired to accept the workflow. Not everyone is a genius with computers and sometime require a little extra help to get things working again. This is where a desktop support role would be needed. Since a lot of the problems with machines thes days is because of user error a DS employee would basically be called to help fix the error that the user caused in the first place. If the problem is not user error it is also needed that the DS be knowledgable with the levels of escalation within the company so that the issue can be sent to the next level. It is also important that the DS documents the issues and problems fully so that the trouble shooting process will not have to be repeated. Most of the time the role of a DS is not a glamourous one, and really takes a calm and cool head to accomplish the job completely and tactfully. Users will call in and blame the DS for there mistake and expect and immediate fix. This can be a huge irritation, because the user is almost always at level employee, or the CEO that does not care about your feeling, and most deffinetley does not want to hear that this issue is there fault and...

...DOI: 10.1080/15305058.2012.690012 Writing Essays on a Laptop or a Desktop Computer: Does It Matter? Guangming Ling and Brent Bridgeman Educational Testing Service To explore the potential effect of computer type on the Test of English as a Foreign Language–Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) Writing Test, a sample of 444 international students was used. The students were randomly assigned to either a laptop or a desktop computer to write two TOEFL iBT practice essays in a simulated testing environment, followed by a survey of computer experience. The survey results suggested that the participants had extensive experience using computers, had more experience with laptops than with desktops, and preferred using the laptop computers to the desktop computers. The computer type (laptop or desktop computer) was found to have a negligible effect on essay performance (essay score, essay length, and writing speed). However, other factors, including gender, regional background, daily experience with laptop or desktop computers, preference for a particular pointing device, and previous TOEFL experience, were found to be significantly related to essay performance but did not interact with computer type. Keywords: computer type effects, desktop, e-rater, essay length, essay score, laptop, writing speed INTRODUCTION When large-scale computer-based testing began in the early 1990s, testing centers were equipped with standard desktop computers. At the time, this was the computer type most familiar...

...Desktop Solutions is a corporation that produces a broad line of printing and scanning systems. It has many branches including the St-Louis Branch. It is possible to see from the case that there are many issues arising from this branch. One key issue that needs investigation is delegation of duties. The equipment administrator has many important responsibilities to perform, and as well as having many, there are many that are not well defined. The Equipment administrator is responsible for the accuracy of inventory records, the timely resolution of equipment discrepancies that delayed orders. The EA is also responsible for maintaining the Non-revenue Report, which needed to be updated daily. Every month the EA was also responsible for taking physical inventory of all the equipment and to match this inventory to the Non-revenue Report. It is possible to see that this list of things are all intertwined and are very time consuming. After an audit, they were able to pinpoint that the accuracy of equipment reports was not precise, this something that should be changed. It is not always a good idea to have one person responsible for tasks that are intertwined, because mistakes are often made and never uncovered. The EA could in fact fudge the numbers when it came to physical inventory so that they matched the Non-revenue Report, and therefore he/she would make the company look better because there would be no lost inventory. Furthermore, we can see that having to update the Non-revenue...
