...Dogs versus Cats: Which Makes a Better Pet? Vicki Fournier COM/155 November 13, 2011 Genevieve Fraser Dogs vs. Cats: Which Makes a Better Pet? There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Some people say they are dog people, some people say they are cat people, and some people say they are both. Beyond the pros and cons, the decision to what makes a better pet often comes down to a person’s lifestyle, expectations, or in certain circumstances a person’s needs. Remember “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” (Hungerford, 1878) Both dogs and cats are common domesticated pets. Dogs have been domesticated for 14,000 years and cats for 7,000 (Cats vs Dogs, n.d.). It appears in my research that most people that were asked this question “which makes a better pet, a dog or a cat” replied with the answer “dogs,” but if dogs are the better pet then why is it that there are 96.3 million homes that own cats and only 77.5 million homes that own dogs. The scientists at Oxford University released a study that claims dogs are smarter than cats and The London Daily Telegraph has reported dogs have been named as more social animals and therefore have bigger brains than the “alone loving cat” (Gatton Star, 2010, p.11). Here is something to think about: have you ever heard of a cat running full speed into a glass door? Sure a dog is a “man’s best friend” and is always there by your side, he can catch a ball in his mouth, and he knows exactly...

...Dogs are much better friends to the average person than cats could ever be. Cats and dogs both make a good pets depending on the individuals life style. The dog is a lot more social with their owner than a cat is with their owner. Dogs love to please their owner in all kinds of ways, and cats just wants to be pleased by their owner. Dogs can be train much faster and easier than a cat could be trained. Many people have a pet at home. The typical house pet is ether a cat or a dog, and some times people have both cats and dogs. I believe that a cat is a better choose if a person lives in an apartment because cats get patty train much faster, as wall as they don’t need that much space. I also believe that the dogs are more suited for a person that has a house because most dogs need to get out and exercise and play. If a person is looking for there first pet they need to consider their living situation, before choosing between a cat and a dog. Dogs are much more social with people than cats are. Dogs either want to be petted or play with you, such as playing fetch or tug-a-war. If dogs aren’t playing with you they are most likely laying close by if not even in your lad, depending on the size of the dog. On the other hand cats are most likely in the other room sleeping because they typical want to be left alone or get upset by load noises, and people that they don’t know. You may only see them two or three times a day, unless you go looking for them. All dogs want to do is to...

...Why cats are better than dogs Many people today own a pet or some sort, but the most popular are dogs and cats. Everyone has their own particular reason for their choice of pet, but I prefer cats over dogs because cats are more independent than dogs. Firstly you never have to worry about trying to fit in 2 or 3 walks every day because with cats you don’t need that. For example, if you were tired or sick and you had a dog, you would still need to walk him/her. Or, it would cost money to hire someone else to walk your dog and it is a headache to arrange. Lastly you could put down enough food and drink and the cat would eat and drink when hungry or thirsty. A dog, on the other hand wouldn’t be able to regulate how much it should eat. Also a cat can go to the bathroom in a litter box, but a dog would need someone to take it out on a walk in order to go to the bathroom. Secondly cats are much quieter pets than dogs especially during times when you want to sleep or relax. For example; let’s say an individual has a tiring day of work and wants to relax. They finally get comfortable when their dog hears a sound outside or sees another dog and starts barking uncontrollably whereas cats keep any moods they have to themselves. Cats do not feel a need to share their opinions with everyone around them. They keep quiet and do not bother with meowing at strangers. When friends arrive at your home, a dog goes into frenzy, barking, leaping and pawing at the newcomer. While the dog does everything...

...Dogs Make the Best Pets Dogs come in all shapes and sizes. From tea cup size to giant size, from long hair to short hair and even hairless. With all the different breeds of dogs there is a variety of behavior and personalities and a variety of looks. But with all this variety there is one thing that stays constant – the love and companionship a dog gives. Regardless of the type of dog you chose your little furry friend will become your best friend, your family and if you let them will become part of your heart. There is no other animal that would make a better pet than a dog, no other pet provides more unconditional love and affection, and provides more social interaction and companionship than a dog. A dog expresses love and affection in so many ways, from the affectionate licks on our face, the intimate wagging of their tails, to their hugs when you come home. I cannot think of another species in the universe other than a dog that is capable of expressing their unconditional love and unwavering loyalty. When you think of a pet the two obvious choices that come to mind are a dog or a cat. Some people may try to argue that a cat is a better pet, but a cat does not greet you at the door like a dog, nor is a cat as affectionate as a dog. A cat is more independent than a dog, they tend to come around when they need something where a dog actually identifies with their owners mood. My dog can actually sense my mood and react accordingly; when I am sick or sad my dogs lie...

...92 16 July 2014 “Fixing”: What is Not Broken Nearly four to five million dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States. Overpopulation in the dog and cat community has dropped drastically from twenty to thirty years ago, but still many lives of innocent animals are being taken away every day at animal shelters. Many see it as inhumane; however, some see it as their just animals. In Riverside County the euthanasia rate of dogs and cats continues to rise even with new shelters, more workers, better operating hours, and more space. It will take more than just public awareness to stop the killing of innocent healthy animals, spay and neuter programs is what will make that change. Imagine what could happen if the County of Riverside passed a law forcing people to spay and neuter your pet. It would save so many innocent animals lives. Consequently, there has to be a change in Riverside County, all dogs and cats should be spayed or neutered to stop animal over population and the increasing rate of animal euthanasia in Riverside County. To begin with, spaying and neutering your pet will more than just decrease the dog and cat overpopulation but it will save the lives of animals that do not have enough “time” in the shelter to receive a second chance at life. In Riverside County at the Ramona Humane Society, in only one month out of the 600 dogs and cats that came through the shelter, 467 dogs were put to sleep. How can a society allow this to keep going? How many more animals...

...Should Kill Shelter’s be Banned? Kill shelter’s are shelters that kill dogs and cats if they have a disability or if no one want’s to adopt them. Kill shelters should be abolished because of the increase of them being constructed and the amount of animals being killed each year without them having a chance at living happily with a family. Kill shelters kill more than 90% of their animals. Nearly 16,000 dogs and 12,000 cats die in one kill shelter. There are numerous reasons as to why they kill these animals, one of them being that they can’t find a home and have no “hope” for adoption. A majority of their animals have disabilities or diseases, which is another reason why they are killed. It shows that these shelters don’t care much for...

Meta Key Words: Dog cancer, Cat cancer, Oncology for pets, Pet Oncology Cancer Treatment for your Pet or Companion Animal A cancer diagnosis may be an unfortunate aspect of living with pets or companion animals that many of us have to face, especially as our cats and dogs get on in years. And, while many dog and cat cancers are benign or require minimal treatment, many can be very invasive and ultimately terminal. A cancer diagnosis used to be equivocal with a death sentence for many pets as little as a decade or two ago. Thankfully, the field of veterinary oncology has come a long way over those last couple of decades. Where once the only humane course of action for many cancer diagnoses was euthanasia, now veterinary oncologists are able to treat cancer and send it into full remission. And, if full remission isn’t possible, many other treatments that provide for a longer life and good quality of life exist. Veterinary Oncology...

...Liberty Humane Shelter is a vital and important addition to the community of Hinesville, Georgia. Every year, in the United States alone, more than five million stray animals are admitted into animal shelters, and sadly, of that number, five out of ten are destroyed from lack of adoption. Many areas such as Georgia, Arizona, and New York contribute significantly to these statistics. Liberty Humane Shelter is one the major animal shelters for the Hinesville area, recorded receiving approximately 30 dogs and cats each day, and 10,000 animals each year. More than four of these animals are euthanized daily, simply because the facility does not have adequate accommodations for the growing population of strays. But Liberty Humane Shelter has committed to making a change for the better to these statistics. Since 2012, the shelter has adopted out 218 cats and 325 dogs. As a “no kill” shelter which takes in animals from multiple rescues, the public, as well as the local humane society, Liberty Humane Shelter understands that animals do not deserve to die simply because they have no home. Equipped with two caged cat rooms for kittens, grown cats and one non caged room for recreation, five spacious dog rooms, and a well equipped clinic, LHS can provide a true haven to animals, both short term and long term. Every animal that is taken in is given the best medical attention available, and automatically spayed or neutered. Each animal also receives a full round of vaccinations and is implanted...

...Professor : Susan Houts Room: 225 Why cats are better companions than dogs We all know that common saying that ‘’A dog is a man’s best friend.” Even though that saying may contain some truth, but dogs are not the only animal friend whose companionship people enjoy, including myself. For many people, a cat is their best friend. Despite what dog lovers may believe, cats make excellent house pets as they are good companions. They are civilized members of the household, and they are easy to care for. In the first place, people enjoy the companionship of cats. Many cats are affectionate, and that goes for my cat fluffy. They will snuggle up with you and ask to be petted, or scratched under the chin. Who can resist a purring cat? If they are not feeling affectionate, cat are generally quite playful. They love to chase balls and feathers, or just about anything that dangling from a string. They especaially enjoy playing when their owners are participating in the game. Contrary to popular opinoin, cats can be trained to avoid unwanted behaviors or perform tricks. They are smart and adjust to variety of situatuions. In addition to being such great companions, cats are civilized members of the household. Unlike dogs, cats do not bark or make loud noise. Most cats don’t even meow very often. They generally lead a quite existence. Cats often do not not have ‘’accident’’. The cats mothers train their kittens to use the litter box, and most cases the cats will use it without fail from that...

Bounding onto the clean carpet, he rolls onto his furry back and invites me to rub his silky stomach. Dogs are my absolute favorite pets. Sighing about the broken baby gate, i pick him up and plop him on the cushion of grass outside. Hercules, my dog, runs around me in circles. When he gets tired, we go back inside and he snuggles with me. In contrast, the cat sits in the corner by its litter box, hissing. That testy, sullen cat never lets me snuggle her. Clearly, dogs are preferable to cats due to their playfulness, cuteness, and willingness to snuggle. Dogs...

...animals suffering on the streets and in animal shelters. As people continue to not place an I.D. tag or a microchip on their pet, they are contributing to the homeless animal population. When people don’t spay or neuter their pet, the animal homelessness population rises. As people fail to consider the needs of an animal when they’re purchasing one, the risk of abandoning them increases. Animal homelessness is a continuous problem in the United States and needs to be solved. Though animals are suffering on the streets and in animal shelters, people continue to buy their pets from breeders and puppy mills. “Nationally, only 20% of the dogs and cats in homes are adopted from animal shelters” (One At A Time). As more U.S. citizens choose breeder-bred animals, the demand for breeders and puppy mills increase. Animals in puppy mills suffer from cruelty and health problems such as blindness, deafness, heart disease, and kidney diseases. As more animals are bred, the greater the animal homelessness rate grows. As breeders and puppy mills continue to breed more animals, they make it harder for a homeless animal to find a home. When a person fails to place an I.D. tag on their pet, or a microchip, it makes it easier for runaway pets to get lost and end...
