As the viewing stands are being built outside the Capitol for the upcoming inauguration, three dozen security agencies are preparing themselves for the possibility of many protesters to make themselves present as President-Elect Donald Trump is sworn into Office. As of December 27th, 2016, the National Park Service has had 23 permit requests of land to hold events for and against Donald Trump. There has been lots of division and tension surrounding the election and has security agencies on extra alert. Michael Chertoff, who was the the former secretary of HomeLand Security during George W. First, from the government level of free speech and what is approved, and with the policies of the universities.The university did state that students, “reserves the right to specify time, manner and place for the exercise of these freedoms, guided by factors that include safety, the rights of others and the normal functioning of the university.” Their posters being taken down and actions toward stopping the flag burning is justified, given the policy that they have. I agree that people have the right to protest against Donald Trump, hold up their signs, and even burn the flag. To me, it’s very disrespectful, time wasting, and unclassy, but they do have the right. However, and this goes back to my statement in my first journal entry, when the physical safety of the people comes into hand, shouldn’t that be where the line is drawn? It’s their own fault, but if they get injured attempting to burn the flag, was it really worth what you were trying to protest? Bears game at Minnesota, two protesters of the Dakota Access Pipeline were arrested after climbing to the rafters and hanging a banner saying, “Divest.#NoDAPL.” Also on the banner was the logo for U.S. Bank, which has a 20 year naming rights deal on the facility. Karl Mayo and Sen Holiday were arrested as a result and a spokeswoman stated on their behalf, “The action came at the end of a month's worth of planning intended to put pressure on the Minneapolis-based bank to fully divest from Energy Transfer Partners, the Dallas-based company funding construction of the pipeline.” As the story begins to develop, it will be interesting to see if the protestors take full responsibility of their actions and accept their punishment or if they will use their Civil Rights and Amendments to back up their cause. Given how many laws they broke I guarantee that they will be punished to a certain degree. It’s another cause about protesting and what can protect their right to do so.
