Applying The Principle Of Double Effect.

“But what about cases where an action aims at a good end that is achieved only through what is, according to natural law, evil? For example, in order to preserve my life (a basic good according to natural law), I must kill my attacker. Since killing violates the basic good of life, I seemingly violated the natural law at the same time I was obeying it. The “principle of double effect” has been developed by natural law theorists to resolve such dilemmas. In brief, the principle states that, in the attempt to bring about a good end, it is morally permissible that a foreseen yet unintended evil result occurs (Simon, 127).”

This quote essentially means that a double effect is acting as a double standard, and while double standards are usually not considered fair/just/appropriate, in this case of natural law, it is permissible. This is because that even though an …show more content…
live saving) good. The good of life saving, in this case, out weighs the evil being committed, of killing the attacker. The “principle of double effect” resolves these ethical/moral issues by stating that in the attempt to bring about a good end, it is morally permissible that an unintended, yet evil, result occurs. I however pose the argument that the ‘principle of double effect’, where natural law theorists’ purpose an evil/unethical act(s) can occur if a good end result comes about, is not universal and is more subjective, than equally applying to any given situation. I believe that background information on a given scenario, to see if the “principle of double effect” is appropriate, is essential in making a determination if the good end result does in fact out weigh the unintended evil. For example, possibly somebody does not value their life or see

Principle of Finance Acc311

...ACCT311 UNIT 3IP Balls and Bats, Inc. purchased equipment on January 1, 2005, at a cost of $100,000. The estimated useful life is 4 years with a salvage value of $10,000. Complete the following tasks for this assignment: 1. Prepare two different depreciation schedules for the equipment—one using the double-declining balance method, and the other using the straight-line method. (Round to the nearest dollar). 2. Determine which method would result in the greatest net income for the year ending December 31, 2005. 3. How would taxes affect management’s choice between these two methods for the financial statements? 1. Let’s begin with straight-line depreciation since the double-declining balance is based upon it. But there’s an important disclaimer here: let’s assume that we know the salvage value at the end, so it reduces the depreciable amount by $10,000. More frequently the business finance problems assume no salvage value because it’s so hard to foresee. Then tooling is depreciated over its Expected life? And any salvage value simply comes back in the last Year. And another disclaimer: the IRS has a half-year convention for equipment put in place but since I am using the full-year in this problem, we’ll ignore that too. STRAIGHT-LINE DEPRECIATION Depreciation expense = Acquisition cost - residual value Estimated useful life in years Depreciation expense per year 22,500 = 100,000 - 10,000 = 90,000 $90,000 over 4 years, which gives 25% per year? Salvage value= $10...

The Effects of Population Density and Noise Paper The first line of strategy is to do what an individual can do to minimize the noise pollution he or she can control in their environment. For instance, if an individual lives next to a noisy freeway or airport, he or she can invest in double panel windows in their home (cite). The double panel windows action server two purposes, one purpose is keep the noise out and the purpose is keep the hot sun and cold winter out (cite). For example in the home individual can control noise pollution by their home by turn off television when not been watched and radio and stereo at low volume. Another strategy to minimize or reduce noise pollution is to try to minimize noises directly from the source. In the workplace...

How to Right a Term Paper

...How to Write a Term Paper I. Choosing a Topic: For this paper you get to choose your topic, so pick something that interests you. Once you have decided what you want to write about in general terms, refine that general idea to a specific topic for your paper. Keep in mind that you have a maximum of 12 pages of text to work with, so your topic is going to have to be pretty narrow in its focus. Also bear in mind that this is a research project, not a high school report; it should center around a thesis that you will prove in your paper. Example: I am interested in World War II, but I’m pretty sure that I can’t cover six years of global warfare in fifteen pages of text. Let’s see...I’m more interested in the War in Europe than in the Pacific, so that narrows that down some, but I need something tighter. I like airplanes, so something about the air war would be interesting, and there was this documentary on the History Channel about the Battle of Britain last month...but even the Battle of Britain is too big for twelve pages. Right, have to narrow it down some more here...do a little preliminary research and reading. Ah, here it is: the German Air Force started out trying to destroy the Royal Air Force by bombing RAF airfields, but then switched to targeting British cities. This decision cost them the battle, because it let the RAF rebuild its fighter strength and shoot down enough German bombers to force the Germans to call off the offensive. Wait a minute. ...

...Advanced Corporate Finance: Guidelines for In-class Presentations and Term Papers 1. Grading The information in the handouts is not very clear and does not include the case, so here some more precision about the grading rules: Everybody should do a writeup for the Wrigley Capital Structure Case. If you only do the case the final exam will count for 70% and the case writeup for 30% of the final grade. In case you want to improve your grade you should think about handing in a term paper or making an in-class presentation. If you do this the case writeup as well as the term paper or presentation will count for 25% of the final grade and the final exam will be reduced to 50%. 2. In-class Presentations The fundamentals: Approximate size: 10-15 powerpoint slides Approximate duration: 15 min Presentation date: will be assigned by me depending on the content Maximum group size: 4 class participants Presentations are optional Not everybody will be able to participate in a presentation, Purpose of the in class presentation: The presentations are intended to summarize academic research on a given issue. The presentation should not only be factually correct and complete but the topic should be well presented. The class should be able to easily understand and follow the argumentation.
