El Paso Museum of History On May 3, 2015 I visited the Museum of History in El Paso Texas located in downtown area. The tour begins before entering the building there five about a ninety inch touch screen TVs which you can use to explore virtually all around and every area of El Paso. I found those TVs really amazing since you can touch any artifact, person or building area and it gives you a brief history and pictures of it. It also gives you the opportunity to email yourself of or a friend or yourself about the items selected. Once entering the premises of the museum there you will sign in with the hostess were they will ask you for your name and zip code. No fee is required for the tour the entrance is free and only a small box for donations is at the main entrance. The hostess will give you a brief explanation of expect and what you may do or not do while during the tour. She will let you know that you may take pictures without flash and only certain labeled items may be touched. In the first floor to the room to the left of the entrance there is not much variety of artifacts. In my tour there was a display of India (mid-eastern) culture which included home styles, wedding outfits, statues of their culture believes and pictures of the buildings in that country. The following room in the first floor there was a display of the E.P.F.D. which included outdated equipment used in 1900s of fire hydrants and fire trucks. The also had a actual 1920s fire truck and a replica of a more modern fire truck in which I was able to climb in and get a more less experience of how it is inside one of the modern trucks. Clothing, equipment, old school fire hydrants and fire hoses were also in display in this room. The third room is for souvenirs they consist of a wide variety of cultures the prices are not bad at all. The second level of the building there is a display of all El Paso culture and our military base Fort Bliss. Once you walk in you will see a short military display and time line about the military in Fort Bliss in El Paso, followed by the El Paso Chihuahitas and El Segundo Barrio culture. In display you will see artifacts of people that have lived in the areas; cabinets, handmade blankets, toys and pictures and more pictures of families that reside from these areas in El Paso. They will have a variety of maps of El Paso in walls and in the floor. One thing that I found attractive was a TV time line from the 1490s to the 2000s. In the middle of the room there is a screen with t a rotating control which explains to you the expansion of the Spanish in America and how El Paso Texas was founded. It is impressive to see the whole story in a couple of minutes and see the map conversion of how El Paso has grown. Next in the second room you will find a room full of artifacts that people from the past century used to cultivate and grow foods. You will find a wooden wagon and other artifacts used to convert water into wine. In the next room still in the second level (third room) here is where you will find more information about politics. There is also a machine cotton gin that was used in production of cotton wool. A variety of artillery is found in this room all the way from clothing to shot guns and hand guns. Also you will find cattle equipment that was used in our agriculture and a few artifacts used by our blacksmiths from the 1800s-1900s. The fourth room is all about the revolution from the Spanish and Mexico. It includes some artifacts and artillery equipment used as well as modern technology that was invented and used during that time for example the electric air fan and the type writer. Even though El Paso was considered a small town from its beginning I believe it is still growing and will continue to grow regardless of the years in the future. I hope that this museum will also grow and display more cultural artifacts and keep bringing more ancient displays. I mean the displays are good but some of these I can still find in my grandparents’ house or in goodwill stores. I think El Paso is very rich in culture and we can do better with our museum I am not saying it is not a good museum but I think we should have more artifacts in display not only a few. Another idea I had in order to save money and become more industrialized is that I noticed that there is multiple museums that are segregated in the downtown area. I think that they should be consolidated into one big museum that would save the city thousands of dollars in expenses and there would be wide variety of displays instead of one small one.

...more relaxing than I thought it would have been. Living in New York City, I was able to go to an art museum every weekend. Look at the different paintings on the wall and feel a different emotion for each. If was funny how an 18x24 painting could make me feel so different about certain things. All a painting is and ever will be, and lines and different stroke one a white canvas if you break it down bit by bit. But together those line and strokes make something beautiful. When I moved from New York I thought I would have to give up that passion for a whole year. I, personally knew that I could do it but then I would be bored on my weekends, something I didn’t want to happen ever especially since I felt I was moving to the middle of nowhere. But I was mistaken when I found out that El Paso had an art museum. That was very shocking news to me, I know not everywhere has an art museum or a museum at all. Recently I was able to visit, I know it’s not good to compare two things together all the time, of course the El Paso art museum isn’t, The Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Whitney Museum of American Art but it was better than I would have ever expected it to be. The El Paso Museum of Art or EPMA, as many call it officially opened to the public in 1959. Though it wasn’t accredited until 1972 and is the only accredited art museum within a 250 mile radius. On the outside of the museum you are welcomed with a statue of a man on a horse or a cowboy, with a gun in his hand. Though I was...

El Paso Museum of Art

...EL Paso Museum of History This was my first time at the El Paso Museum of History and I found it really interesting. To begin, at the entrance of the museum there are some digital huge touch screens that have a map that guide you to the major areas in our city of El Paso. Then I went straight to the second floor because the first floor was not available at that time. On the second floor we found items from Fort Bliss. The exhibitions were mainly objects from the military with a lot of history behind them. There were many things that people used in the past like clothes, furniture, objects to fight in wars etc. There were also many ID cards from the past years, which are very different from today’s identification cards. There were some medical objects used in the past which I found very interesting because it let us understand how technology is advanced in this days. Also the museum had some part of exhibition of the “Segundo barrio” in El Paso. There was a lot of history behind the Segundo barrio and many interesting facts to learn about our past history. In my personal point of view, the museum of history was even better than the art museum. I found this museum very interesting because you are able to know how the things worked in our past. When observing at the historical items you can notice how things have changed and how was life different in those years than how it is in the present. For example we saw some surgical kits and medicine used by our past generations. Looking...

Reflective Essay: A Career As A Teaching Assistant

...My interest in becoming a teaching assistant for the Sociology and Anthropology department stems from my experiences with TAs as an undergraduate student. I had a variety of TAs with different methods of working with students. Unfortunately, there were several TAs across various departments that where never available to students, or that where completely ineffectual when they were available. For students who lacked the social and cultural capital to confidently interact with professors, TAs are a vital presence. When students are unable to communicate with a TA, they lose an important resource. Having been in a position where I have learned the importance of TA advocacy for undergraduate students, I know that I can become a strong champion...

Calamity Jane

...Charlotte Cannary. Martha was the oldest of six children; she had two brothers and three sisters. Martha Jane received no formal education, but was considered literate. When Martha Jane was 13 her father decided to re-locate the family to Virginia City, Montana, by way of wagon train that was heading from Missouri to Montana. The wagon train took the Overland Trail, taking approximately five months to reach Virginia City, Montana. According to information on the Lakewood Public Library site the trek was often daunting. “Many times in crossing the mountains, the conditions of the trail were so bad that we frequently had to lower the wagons over ledges by hand with ropes, for they were so rough and rugged that horses were of no use” (Women in History 2010). Along with this they had to ford streams because many streams were noted for quicksand meaning horses could be lost along the way if they weren’t careful. Martha Jane spent most of her time with the men on the wagon train hunting. In her autobiography Martha Jane states “In fact I was at all times with the men when there was excitement and adventures to be had.”(Burk, M. cir. 1900). Charlotte Cannary, Martha Jane’s mother, helped supplement the family income by taking in washing from nearby mining camps. Charlotte Cannary died along the Overland Trail because of an ailment called washtub pneumonia. This was a common ailment to those women who took in laundry from the nearby mining camps, as washtub pneumonia was used to describe a...

...usuario. Architecture in Texas

...Timeline of Architecture in Texas BY: SM Early settlers brought to Texas their cultural values and traditions. These values and historical civilization features were reflected through the settlers’ survived architectural achievements. Texas architecture compromises diverse structures and legacy from the Spanish colonies to the European expenditures to the Anglo pioneers’ log cabins. The architecture of Texas through the centuries has indeed outlined the cultural history and gave the state a unique Texan identity. Texas architecture can be organized into six periods: Indian, Spanish colonial-Mexican, Republic-antebellum, Victorian, and Early twentieth century Modern [1]. The earliest Indian-Native American, nomadic or Indigenous people were divided to several tribes. The Coahuiltecan and Karankawan lived in the coast of south Texas and the Trans-Nueces, were not organized did not have permanent habitations. Jumanos and Patarabueyes lived in Trans Peco, built homes from mud and sticks. The Apaches and the Comanches, relied on hunting for survival. So their culture was based on moving very often to various places in Texas. They used tepees for shelters, easy to assemble or disassemble for transportation. The caddos lived In Northeast Texas, an agricultural people. They assembled round, thatched shelters, and mounds. Some of their shelters were about 50 feet in diameter. The Pueblo tribe used animal skin or fur and adobe to build their abodes. They made the adobes...

Theater

...PHILIPPINE THEATER Theater in the Philippines is as varied as the cultural traditions and the historical influences that shaped it through the centuries. The dramatic forms that flourished and continue to flourish among the different peoples of the archipelago include: the indigenous theater, mainly Malay in character, which is seen in rituals, mimetic dances, and mimetic customs; the plays with Spanish influence, among which are the komedya, the sinakulo, the playlets, the sarswela, and the drama; and the theater with Anglo-American influence, which encompasses bodabil and the plays in English, and the modern or original plays by Fihpinos, which employ representational and presentational styles drawn from contemporary modern theater, or revitalize traditional forms from within or outside the country. The Indigenous Theater The rituals, dances, and customs which are still performed with urgency and vitality by the different cultural communities that comprise about five percent of the country’s population are held or performed, together or separately, on the occasions of a person’s birth, baptism, circumcision, initial menstruation, courtship, wedding, sickness, and death; or for the celebration of tribal activities, like hunting, fishing, rice planting and harvesting, and going to war. In most rituals, a native priest/priestess, variously called mandadawak, catalonan, bayok, or babalyan, goes into a trance as the spirit he/she is calling upon possesses him/her. While entranced...
