Human Rights Issues- Genocide and Forcing Children

Have you ever been forced into doing something you don’t really want to do? Maybe your parents “force” you to do your homework or clean your room, but what if it was something damaging? What if you were forced to kill of an entire race or species? Ender Wiggin had to do just that at only eleven years of age. Orson Scott Card’s novel Ender’s Game demonstrates forcing children to go into wars and genocide, which have been issues in many other countries. Card presents genocide and forcing children to fight in wars through the character Ender; an eleven-year-old boy who is imposed into fighting and wiping out the whole bugger species. Card writes, “‘… You won every battle, and today you finally fought them at their home world, where the queen was, all the queens from all their colonies, they all were there and you destroyed them completely…’”(297). In this conversation, Ender realizes that it wasn’t a game, and all of the attacks he enforced were real. He actually committed genocide, something he clearly did not want to do. Another example is, “ ‘Of course we tricked you into it. That’s the whole point,’ said Graff. ‘It had to be a trick or you couldn’t have done it… But somebody with that much compassion could never be the killer we needed. Could never go into battle willing to win at all costs. If you knew, you couldn’t do it…’”(Card 298). With this detail, it shows that this was not Ender’s choice and that he did not want to harm anyone. Graff tricked Ender into doing this because deep down everyone knew that Ender could not really do it. However, a child had to lead the battle. “ ‘And it had to be a child, Ender,’ said Mazer. ‘You were faster than me. Better than me. I was too old and cautious. Any decent person who knows what warfare is can never go into battle with a whole heart. But you didn’t know. We mad sure you didn’t know. You were reckless and brilliant and young. It’s what you were born for.’”(Card 298). Graff and Mazer knew that they had to find a young, fresh mind, but with no emotion, so they could not tell him. As you can see, Ender clearly does not support genocide; however other people have different opinions, as genocide was a big issue in Germany. Adolf Hitler was the leader of the Nazi party and he was the man behind the idea of kill off all of the Jews. According to, “The Holocaust” Hitler’s ‘Final Solution’ started under cover of the war where more and more Jews were killed in concentration camps in Poland. They tried to keep it a secret but ultimately failed as eyewitnesses reported to governments. For example, “Though the Nazis tried to keep operation of camps secret, the scale of the killing made this virtually impossible. Eyewitnesses brought reports of Nazi atrocities in Poland to the Allied governments, who were harshly criticized after the war for their failure to respond, or to publicize news of the mass slaughter. This lack of action was likely mostly due to the Allied focus on winning the war at hand, but was also a result of the general incomprehension with which news of the Holocaust was met and the denial and disbelief that such atrocities could be occurring on such a scale.”(The Holocaust). This was probably the worst part of it all because Hitler was lying to his people and hiding the fact that he was executing genocide. Hitler also believed that future of Nazi Germany was in the children. The Hitler Youth movement was created in the 1920’s where children between 10-18 years old were forced to join. The Hitler Youth catered for 10 to 18 year olds. There were separate organizations for boys and girls. The task of the boys’ section was to prepare the boys for military service. For girls, the organization prepared them for motherhood.
Forcing children into the military is not just an issue Germany. Children’s fighting in the militia is an issue for war-torn countries like Columbia, Africa, the Middle East, and south Asia. According to Ann O’Neill, “Some children are kidnapped from their schools or their beds, some are recruited after seeing their parents slaughtered, some may even choose to join the militias as their best hope for survival.” There are many different ways that children end up in the army, but most of them are required and have no choice. They are also mistreated badly as all of them get brainwashed, trained, and drugged before they are sent out to battle. It is also reported that, “The journey from boy or girl to killing machine follows a horrifying route of indoctrination, including being forced to execute friends and family.”(CNN). Children have the right to choose what they want and should never have to be forced to kill anyone.
From these examples, we can see that genocide and mistreating children have been problems all over the world including, Germany, Africa, Columbia, and Middle East. When you are being “forced” to eat your veggies or clean your room it is not nearly as bad as being forced to participating in the military and killing an entire species. The next time I’m required to do my homework and eat my veggies, I think I will just do it.

Ender's Game Analysis

...‘“Hollywood’s biggest box office bomb of 2013”’ (Variety.com) is commonly associated with the release of the Ender’s Game movie. While not a bad movie in any sense, the movie lacked an engaged fanbase that other sci-fi series like Hunger Games and Twilight have. Compared to the book, the movie leaves out details such as Demosthenes and Locke, Peter’s rise in political power, and Ender’s voyage to the bugger home world. In the book, Ender starts his journey off at Battle School. After a few years of training and commanding an army there, he’s moved to Command School to participate in simulated battles against the buggers. He later finds out that he was not playing simulations and that the battles he commanded were real. Then, he and Valentine...

The fear leads the people and allows them to grow stronger as well as to defeat their enemy in time. Ender's Game Literary Analysis

...Ender’s Game takes the story of the child soldier and sets it in a futuristic and dystopian society with mixed success in some areas as well as failure in others. The style and realism were interesting aspects to critique because rather than this being a memoir, it is a fictional representation that may have been fun to read, but without examination, it would be easy to miss how the book does not always stay true to the issues facing real child soldiers. Speaking to the style dimension, the book’s plot is well written and the characters are developed throughout the story line to make us genuinely care for them. However, the conversations between characters appear forced and unnatural. Reflecting on the realism of the piece, it does accurately address some of the symptoms that a child soldiers would experience with PTSD and erratic mood changes. For example, Ender wakes up biting on his first and had PTSD influenced dreams about killing Bonzo, even though he thinks the boy was just sent home after the fight....

Ender's Game Leadership Analysis

...Orson Scott Card’s science fiction novel, Ender’s Game, demonstrates the different techniques of leaders. Valentine and Peter, Ender’s siblings, all showed promise for the dire need of a commander, a leader, but rejected from the program. Ender’s birth was an attempt to find someone that possessed qualities from both, in between too much compassion and too much aggression. Despite the rejection from the government, Peter and Valentine gained a leadership role through a different route, expressing the difference of each of their methods and thoughts. Ender, in the six years on Earth, was constantly tormented by Peter. The abandonment from the government after losing his mentor, caused Peter to be aggressive towards Ender. Peter saw Ender as...

Ender's Game Movie Vs Book Analysis

...Imagine a situation as if you were put in a small dark box and you are trying to escape, but no one is willing to help you. This was the exact situation that Ender was placed in. The book and the movie, Ender's Game, are about a boy named Ender who was “born” to save the world. Ender was isolated throughout his life to make him mentally stronger. At the end of the story, he destroys the whole alien race and saves the world. While the book and the movie have a similar story, the book is much better than the movie because the book conveys the story with more depth. There are many crucial elements in Ender’s Game that are needed for the story to be good. One theme that is important in the story is that the end justifies the means. This is...

Ender's Game Analysis

...Sometimes school does not seem important and other things in my life start to matter more. For my “work in progress” paper, I chose my Ender’s Game analysis. Connecting with books is usually easy for me but when it is an assignment I suddenly become less motivated to connect. I turned this paper in at least a week late and put minimal effort into it. I remember having a lot of other classwork and focusing on that. When I realized that it was late, I shrugged my shoulders and said that it would get done eventually. After turning it in I had a feeling of dread because I knew that I would have a bad feeling receiving my grade instead of a good one. After looking it over, I tried to find ways to make it better. I looked for ways that the reader could better connect with Ender and have an understanding of the book. I corrected convention errors and did my best to make this the paper it was...

Manipulation and Deception in Ender's Game

...Independent Reading Project Analysis Paper: Manipulation and Deception in Ender’s Game 2 major and reoccurring themes throughout Ender’s Game is manipulation and deception. Much of this novel is about how adults manipulate Ender into fulfilling their needs. They trick him, lie to him, and tell him just enough so that he can defeat the buggers. Ender pretty much sums this up when he says, “I've spent my life as someone's pawn" (Pg. 97). On one hand, it seems wrong to lie to and cheat a kid. On the other hand, the adults manipulate him to ensure the survival of the human race. Besides the manipulative relationship between the adults and Ender, there are a number of other relationships full of manipulation: Peter manipulates Valentine, Peter and Valentine manipulate the world, and Ender manipulates many other kids throughout the book. Manipulation may sounds negative, but it gets the job done. Deception can involve being tricked by others, or tricking one's self. In Ender’s Game, trickery and false promises are parts of both games and deadly conflicts. Deception can be used to hurt or protect, depending on the intention of the deceptor. In Ender's Game, deception plays many roles. The main use of deception is the adults versus the children. Early on in the novel, it is clear that Ender already realizes adults lie when the subject of the monitor being removed is discussed. The adults are also deceptive when they remove the monitor and allow Ender to think he was not accepted into...

Ender's Game Rhetorical Analysis

...In her essay “Winning and Losing in Ender’s Game”, for Ender’s World, Hilari Bell expresses that Ender wasn’t successful because he was so great, but because of the friendships and alliances he made based purely on empathy: “True strength comes not from being the best- which Ender was- but from the alliances, teamwork, friendship… and the losers” (83).These friends are the squadron leaders who help him in defeating the buggers. They were the people he trusted, the out castes, but they came together, and in that time they began to know and understand each other. Ender was able to use his friends to battle and be victorious in each of the simulations. Mazar showed them a replay of the most recent battle, and Ender realized that they resembled...
