...English 1010 29 October 2011 Is Food Fit to Eat? With all the recent news about tainted food and related deaths, are people defying death with every meal they eat? Considering only the United States (US) population of over 312 million people eating three meals a day, almost one billion meals are eaten in this country every day. Each person who consumes food is a potential victim of food poisoning. In the US, there are two agencies that oversee the safety of food production and processing: the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gets involved in food safety when a contamination outbreak occurs. According to the CDC, there are an estimated 76 million cases of food poisoning annually. Within those reported cases, 5,000 cases result in the victim’s death and 325,000 people require hospitalization. Compared to the hundreds of millions of meals consumed in the US each year, reported deaths from food poisoning are relatively low, especially considering that deaths caused by automobile accidents in the US have averaged over 35,000 annually for the past ten years. The government regulatory agencies cannot prevent or control every source of food contamination prior to consumption, even with a larger budget. According to Sherri McGarry, a senior advisor in the FDA’s Office of Foods, “The food chain is very complex. There are many steps, and the more steps there are...

...English 1010 has been a very interesting journey for me. Throughout my journey, I experienced frustration, stress, and long nights in the computer lab. English 1010 have not only made me a better writer, but it has also improved my creativity in my writing. My writing has improved tremendously since the first day of class. I am satisfied with the grade I earned although; I feel I could have done a lot better on to receive a higher grade. I believe my grade should be a B. According to the English 1010 syllabus I feel that my grade should be a B because I improved since my first paper, I participate in class conversations, and I have decent attendance. At the very beginning of the English 1010 Course, my writing style wasn’t too good. I noticed...

...Catherine Edwards Ledbetter English 1010 8 September 2015 When I was about 17 years old my friends and I would go to this place we call “The Clift’s”. It had the best and chilliest people I have ever met. Everyone had the best vibes. It was the most peaceful place I’ve ever been. We used to do rebellious things behind the curtain of trees. The best part: The warm beautiful lake that I got to dive into for hours. The Clift’s has always been a place where I felt free. When we would go to the Clift’s my friends and I would all go pile in the hot car and drive around and eventually would come to the conclusion that we should just go to the Clift’s, like we always did. There were always new people to meet, and they all felt the same way I did about my special place. They all had positive vibes and were all pretty cool. The forest was the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. It was bright, green, and deep. As I walked through the forest the trees would touch me, and the branches that had fallen would crack under my feet. One of the reasons why I went there as a teenager was to experience things that I wasn’t able to do in the outside world it felt like. I could smoke as I pleased. Most people just smoked cigarettes and marijuana, some did other drugs but that’s all I really wanted to do. Drinking was always fun, too. It gave me a sense of adventure and made me feel as I could party forever. Drinking and smoking gave me the ability to be hyper and dance, and made me feel...

...English 1010 6 June 2015 A New Life Humans are like tea bags. You do not know your own strength until you get into hot water. Growing up I always had it made. I had the security and support of my family plus financial support. I did not understand the true meaning of responsibility until maybe late last year when I found out I was pregnant. That day changed my life. I sat inside Starbucks and reflected on my life up to that point. I knew from that day on; that if I plan on keeping the baby I had to prepare myself mentally, physically, and financially. Late last summer I was feeling a bit discourage about life and where I was headed. I had no plans or goals set for myself. I was also feeling a bit depressed that I did not know what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I wanted to get back into school as a start to get me out of my dark clouds, but my living situation at the time did not permit me to do so. I knew God had a plan for me though because I felt his presence the most around that time in my life. He spoke to me through the people I was around and books I read at the time. I believe he was mentally preparing me for what was coming. My boyfriend and I also became closer around that time as well and talking to him helped me tremendously with my future plans on what I wanted to do. I was feeling a little better about myself now that I had written down some goals. Soon after, I find out that I am pregnant. Emotionally, I feel numb. By this time, I am still not in school...

...Austin Carey 09/20/15 Eng 1010 Blah Blah Blah!!!!!! Have you ever been in that awkward situation where someone is talking to you, and all you hear is blah blah blah blah? Growing up having a friend from a different culture there was a lot of things going on that I couldn’t understand at a younger age. I meet my friend Johnathan at age of 5. We hung out together, ate together, went to school together pretty much did everything together, so it was almost like we were the same person. Even though me and my friend was like one we had a lot of difference. One of the biggest difference between us was he was part Spanish but you couldn’t tell by the complication of his skin color. I can remember the first day I went in his house, that day I was so nervous and had all eyes on me but all I could hear was blah blah blah. I was standing in my friend’s living room, with a gigantic grin on my face. Thinking to myself how funny his mom sounds, I bursted out a full goofy laugh. As the tears rolled down from my eyes from laughing so hard. I heard a distinct change in the tone of his mom's voice. Instantly Johnathan gets my attention and lets me know his mom is really upset right now. Me not knowing that there was different language I felt confused on why she would be so upset. My friend took me to his room, once we got in his room he explained to me that his mom didn’t speak English. Not knowing how disrespectful...

...Katie Fuller English 1010 Ms. Wardell 18 September 2015 How Alcohol Has Influenced My Literacy Not everyone really remembers how or when they learned to read and write. In fact, most people do not. I am one of those people that do not. So, this is not so much a story of “how” as much as it is a story of some recollections of my journey through literacy as a whole. From my first big kid book, to learning a new language, and everything in between. Not all of these recollections are necessarily positive ones, though. My father had a lot of negative influence on me when I was younger, and I believe he is the reason I am still not the greatest student. Once when I was in first grade, my class was taking our weekly spelling test. None of the words were particularly difficult, considering we were only in first grade. In fact, I specifically remember the word “pie” being one of the words. For whatever reason, though, I could not seem to keep up with my teacher as she called out the words. She would call out a word, and before I could finish writing, she had already called out the next, and the next, and the next. Eventually, being the cry baby I am, I started sobbing uncontrollably because I was sure I was going to fail. In the middle of the test! Once she realized I was crying, she turns to me and asks, “What’s wrong?” I felt way too embarrassed to tell her and the whole class that I could not keep up with them, so I ended up blurting out, “I just miss my dad.” My dad had been...

...1998(2), 18-23 APPROACHES TO DIGLOSSIA IN THE CLASSROOM: THE MIDDLE WAY David Deterding INTRODUCTION The concept of diglossia was developed by Ferguson (1959). It describes a situation where two languages or language varieties occur side by side in a community, and each has a clear range of functions. One of these varieties, the Hvariety (standing for 'High'), is adopted as the standard variety and is used in official situations, such as government broadcasts, religious services, and teaching; and the other, the L-variety (for 'Low'), is used in informal situations, such as local markets and conversations between friends. The focus of this article is to discuss how the concept of diglossia might be appropriate to describe the Singapore English-speaking community, and to consider what approaches can be adopted by teachers towards the use of the L-variety in schools. Examples of diglossia that have been widely quoted are: the Arabic community, where each region has its own colloquial variety, but classical Arabic is still taught in schools and is regarded by many as “more beautiful” and therefore more appropriate for written texts; the Swiss-German community, where all children learn Standard German in schools, and most books and newspapers are in Standard German, but the people continue to use the local Swiss-German dialect on an everyday basis; the Tamil community, where the language taught in classrooms and used in literature is sharply different from the colloquial variety...

...OLD ENGLISH LITERATURE DURING THE DARK AGES ABSTRACT This period extends from about 450 to 1066 A.D. The sources of Old English literature, as we know it, are rooted in their Teutonic origins and were evolved by the spirit that drove the times. In addition to reflecting the violence of the age, however, Old English literature also provides insight into the hearts and souls of a culture that had a strong attachment to nature; where loyalty and honor were more important than life. And for a culture that did not believe in the immortality of the human soul. Beowulf is the oldest and longest known poem of the Old English period. The passionate struggle between Beowulf and the sea monster Grendel is a reflection of the struggle between man and the forces of nature. INTRODUCTION The Medieval Times encompass one of the most turbulent periods in the History of England and scatter the Medieval History books and other historical documents. Middle Ages embraced two quite different periods of literary history, the Old English (or Anglo-Saxon) and the Middle English, sharply divided from each other by the Norman duke William´s conquest of the island in 1066. Both English culture and the English language changed radically in the years following this event, and English literature was given a new spirit. (The Norton Anthology of English Literature) Old English was the West Germanic language spoken in the area now known as England between the 5th and 11th centuries. Anglo-Saxon...

...English 1020-L22 November 3, 2013 Cultural Analysis-“From Silence to Words: Writing as Struggle” “From Silence to Words: Writing as Struggle” is an essay written by Min-Zhan Lu, in which she describes the effects, both positive and negative, she experienced while trying to obtain somewhat of a balance, between the learning techniques and language forced on to her and her sisters by their parents, and the education and language taught and enforced by their country, China. Lu describes the emotional strain, confusion, and the political persecution she experienced, beginning at the young, tender age of four years old, the year after the Communist Revolution of 1949. For many years, the only memories Lu had were of the many hardships she faced during the years of getting her education, which made it difficult to recall the benefits of her education. While writing this essay, Lu was forced to reflect over these particular years of her life and the effects it had on her, both good and bad. She finally realized that as hard as it was to endure these hardships, personal benefits resulted from these difficult times as well. Lu explains her revelation by stating, “My understanding of my education was so dominated by memories of confusion and frustration that I was unable to reflect on what I could have gained from it” (148). One of the benefits Lu gained was growth, in both her reading and writing skills, by persevering through the confusion and frustration during that time. ...

...ADVANTAGES OF THE TRIBUNAL SPEED-tribunal cases are highly regarded and most times initially attended to in court, and are frequently arranged on, within a day or two. They are constantly defined on how long can a person wait before their case can be heard and decided upon so that the person do not have to be going back and forth. COST-in the tribunal system cost are quite reasonable as fined can be divided into halves so that the defendant do not have to pay the whole sum of money. and sometimes one can always represent themselves without the aid of authorised officials. INFORMALITY-it is a bit different from law courts as in law courts wigs and gowns are worn but in this system judiciary dresses as normal everyday worker so it does not create an intimidating atmosphere for people without legal advisors. flexibility SPECIALISATION-tribunal members have all got a speciality in a specific subject area, and through sitting on tribunals are able to build up depth of knowledge of that area that judges in ordinary court could not hope to match. RELIEF WORK OVERLOAD FROM COURT-it reduces the number of cases sent to the main court as they deal with also important cases and the courts are not overloaded. AWARENESS OF POLICY-the tribunal members because of their expertise are likely to understand the policy behind legislation in their area, and often have large discretionary power in their to use. PRIVACY-members of the tribunal most times meets in privacy so that they do not...
