Day 14:
''Wake up!" shouted a guard.
"Get ready'' his fellow said, ''it's nearly time.''
Lucius was already up. He listened around and heard the agitated warrior from his right yell at the now approaching guards, "shut yer holes, I'm tryin' to sleep.'' From his voice Lucius gathered that that man was in fact the infamous Lutatius. The guards chose not to reply by words to his disrespect but instead unlocked his cell and gave him 5 lashes, Lutatius could be heard breathing heavily and letting out grunts instead of the loud screams which he was clearly holding back.
"I'm up, I'm up now quit yer yelling, im tryin' to keep a clear head. All I ask is that yeh fetch me when it's time to eat coz I'm bloody stravin' '' exclaimed Uriah. A guard sniggered while the other had an angry expression on his face full of contempt ''watch yourself and show your superiors some respect or it'll be the whip for you as well" roared that guard.
''Ok we're all up but why did you wake us up now its only dawn you know!'' said a voice Lucius hadn’t heard before it was deep. "Because we can'' replied a guard.
As a few hours went by the guard chose it was an appropriate time to take the imprisoned warriors to the kitchen; when the time came the warriors felt a little joy that they got to get the first pick of the food instead of the slaves and gladiators getting the majority and the rest only getting the left over's that even dogs might think twice about. As they marched in single file with their hands cuffed and feet chained together, the unknown voice from before whispered in Lucius' ear and said ''listen Spartan, I don’t know who you are and you don’t need to know who I am but I'm the one known as the boar of the east, give me your food and ill consider gutting you last'', Lucius stopped abruptly the lead guard unknowingly strolled on while the three warriors walking in front of Lucius tripped slightly and turned around, as did Lucius, he faced the boar who was a tall-muscular-dark skinned man with no hair and said to him ''and I've been referred to as the ghost of Sparta…'', straight away murmurs occurred between the warriors and the guard at the back whom had been listening intensively all this time had a look of slight awe on his face while the boar's face simply looked shock stricken. The guard who had the lead seemed to have noticed and returned back to the queue, he was the angrier one of the two guards who also seemed to have heard the conversation came shouting '' why have you all stopped?- ghost or no ghost a blade will go through you like any other man, now get moving you scum.'' They continued to march past the halls and now they began to hear the sound of the cheering mobs in their seats in the coliseum anticipating the arrival of the warriors and the event which has yet to come. The smells of the cooking food was strong which meant the kitchens were nearby however this was not good as the food carried with it a certain stench which would unblock the worst noses, even the guards in the halls whom were attired in the legions' leathery-red uniform had a queasy look on their face which the seven warriors knew was only caused by the smell.

''SLOP'', sighed an unknown warrior ''great.''
Lucius grinned ''yes that is the best description…this is what we receive after being handpicked by Zeus to fight to become the new god of war''
''A BOWL OF HARD-SOGGY RICE AND SOME BREAD AS HARD AS WOOD, YOU’VE GOTTA BE JOKIN' RIGHT'' Roared Uriah.
''Keep your voice down or you'll get nothing'' said the angry guard.
All the warriors were complaining though as the guard sat on their tables with bowls of fruits; a piece of chicken, and an ox' leg. And yet they had to eat otherwise they will have no energy for the upcoming fight, this could be Lucius' last meal and he was disgusted by it, he looked around to see all the warriors slurping down their slop as quickly as possible then looked back at his bowl and started staring at it for what seemed like ages until the boar who sat opposite him said ''sorry 'bout before, you gonna eat that sir?'' Lucius looked up and asked ''sir?'', the boar replied ''yes I was under yer command at the battle o' the Byzantines yeh know.'' ''Oh'' he replied. ''Are you gonna eat that rice or what? I'll give you my bread fer it?'', Lucius pushed his bowl towards the boar and took the bread of him then realised how hungry he had been and stared to eat his bread. By now the guards and the warriors were listening carefully to the conversation but were all trying to hide that fact so kept eating but much slower than before. ''So…why'd you leave?'' Lucius hesitated to reply but said ''I quit.'' ''Now why would yeh' be doin' that?''; ''Why?''; ''How come!?'' interrupted Uriah, Lutatius, and the boar all at once. Lucius didn’t reply. The crowd of eavesdroppers realised that he didn’t want to continue to talk about the subject any longer so they kept quiet.
Afterwards, a long silence was set in place creating tension and awkwardness between the warriors and the guards until the angrier one stood up rubbing his hands together in eagerness and said ''we'll be moving soon so be prepared, the gods only have a limited amount of patience you know'' he laughed to himself while the other guard who seemed to have been out of this world added as if he had just come back and is now surprised ''right, 'course…of to the arena we go.''

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter deals with the foundation and general overview of the research undertaken. It consists of the background of the study, the research questions, the aims of the study, the significance of the study, the research method, the data source, the data collecting and analyzing techniques, the clarification of key terms and the organization of the paper. 1.1 Background Human language is human’s potential as a mean of intentional communication (Yule, 1996: 20). People use language to communicate with each other. Thus, the use of language plays a very important role in people’s communication. There are various languages in this world and those languages are used by people in different nations and ethnics. Different languages used by people in different places and communities are defined as language varieties (Hudson, as cited in Wardhaugh, 1992: 21). People not only need to communicate with other people in one nation or ethnic who use the same language, but they also need to communicate with other people in other nations or ethnics who use different languages. Understanding people’s languages in the language varieties is the way to make a good communication. Therefore, a good understanding is required by people whose languages are different, in order to make a successful communication. 1 There are many ways that can be used to understand different languages and one of them is translation. Translation is the process of rendering the meaning of a text...

English 115 Assignment 1

...Vontesch Barnes “On Becoming a Writer” Strayer University – English 115 Assignment 1 “On Becoming a Writer” Russell Baker “On Becoming a Writer” conveyed how he had a dream to become a writer. The main point that I took from this passage was that things happen unexpectantly. If you have a dream entertain it, because you never know where your pursuit will lead you. Russell looked at writing as something that was done by only the rich. He never imagined that becoming a writer could be a career that he could potentially get paid from. What I took from this was that he treated writing as a hobby or something liked he liked to do. Although writing was Russell’s dream, he still only thought of it as an Interest until he met Mr. Fleagle. It seemed that even though he had not been taught by Mr. Fleagle, he already had a preset judgement of how he was going to be. “He was said to be stuffy, dull, and hopelessly out of date. To me he looked to be sixty or seventy and prim to a fault”. One point I got from this was that the answers to life’s mysteries, even your dreams may come in a form you wouldn’t expect. Russell didn’t like English, the assignments or writing papers for the class in general. After some time in Mr. Fleagle’s class he was given an assignment called “What I did on My Summer Vacation”. This is the assignment that eventually lead him to discover his passion for writing. Instead he wrote a paper titled “The Art of Eating Spaghetti”. Russell pulled from a past...

Autoethnography

...English class by far was my least liked class in all my middle school and high school education and never would I have thought that what I once disliked as a student would be of such importance to my future career. Being able to write, read, and understand, simply becomes the basics to learning and getting through college, and I, myself am still acquiring the necessary skills to become a better writer. In fact, one of the goals I plan to accomplish through my college education is to become a better writer. I can read and understand what I am reading pretty good but when it comes to writing I feel like I still lack some skills and expertise, and certainly being able to write will be of great value to my future career. Writing allows us to communicate our ideas, our beliefs, our understanding of a subject, and our dreams. Through this process one can inform, persuade, express, entertain, and explain, and this is why I believe writing is so important, especially when you have dedicated yourself to a life-long learning experience. School and from my experiences in writing I can say I’ve had but minimal training, just the basics. Never have I ever written something for fun or for my own good, every time I write it’s for a grade, not for my own pleasure nor for a greater purpose than just a grade, and surely this has to change. Ever sense I have become extremely interested in learning more about the world around me, understanding what is happening and why its happening, has made me...

This I Believe: Loud Music Causes Hearing Loss in Teens

...Logan Nelson Pd.2a Mrs. Downey 5/5/14 English 9 This I believe :Loud music causes hearing loss in teens IPods and MP3s are very important to teens today. We listen to them while we get dressed and on our way to school. We try to sneak our ear buds in during class; we listen after school, while doing our homework, and before bed. IPods and MP3 players have become an important part of the daily schedule, but what teens don't realize is those same devices that entertain us for hours each and every day can be a serious source of hearing loss Most teenagers believe that listening to music for long periods of time is perfectly fine. According to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) teens should not listen to music for more than one hour every day at a reasonable volume. The reasonable volume for music is 75 decibels witch is about 70% of an IPods volume capacity according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information The effects of frequently listening to loud music include permanent hearing loss. The hair cells in the ear – irreplaceable cells that send electrical impulses to the brain – can die from sustained abuse. After going to a rock concert or listening to a lot of loud music, you might hear a soft ringing in your ears called tinnitus. This is an indication of acoustic trauma that over time could result in hearing loss if precautions aren't taken. Many people think that hearing loss is hereditary but “acoustic trauma produced by exposure to loud sounds” is...

...Children and Technology Erica Groves February 20, 2016 English Composition Devry University Does handing our children a phone or a tablet at a restaurant seem harmful? This day and age it might seem normal, or as a way to distract our children. This is an issue that is not ok if it’s not monitored by the parents. Our children are not learning or engaged in what’s going on around them if this is not monitored. I’m not for making use of tablets, cell phones, games, as a distraction or to even occupy our kids. You are the parent and should want to interact with them, spend time making memories. There are heavy opinions about the use of cell phones or tablets. I’m going to tell you about the consequences of giving these things to our children when not being used as a learning tool or monitored by parents. “Newer generations are growing up with this technology, and while it does have its benefits, primarily in education and access to information, it can also be detrimental to children during a very important time of growth. Too much computer use can affect children's physiological and psychological health as well as social skills.” (2008) Negative effects from Computers on Children. Having children as younger than 8 years old on a tablet for periods throughout the day might do more harm than good. These devices have them glued to the screen while riding in a car, or out in public, even at home. It takes away the social part of going out and meeting new people. They see...

Expectations of Literary Masterpieces

...requirement as a reasonable excuse to take this class. There are many preconceived notions around the study of literary masterpieces, and some people have a hard time pushing past the bitter memories of stuffy high school English teachers and 30 page book reports on Crime and Punishment to be worked on over summer vacation. I am lucky enough to have had a wonderful experience with the classics, and my expectations for ENG/106 come from a place of fondness, respect, and genuine awe. With that being said, there is more to understanding literary masterpieces than simply enjoying a good read; one should also recognize the preconceived notions that often come with the subject, as well as have an understanding of why literary masterpieces are important and how they influence modern society. My Experiences and Expectations My experience with literary masterpieces began at age seven when I first read Charlotte’s Web. While that may not be considered a literary masterpiece, it did open my eyes to many amazing elements of literature. Firstly, I was struck by how powerfully I felt for the characters, and how easily I was drawn into their stories to the point in which I laughed when they laughed, worried when they worried, and wept when they wept. This paper thing had drawn emotion from me. A person wrote this story long before I was born, about...

...Experience Paper Nicholas Georgeson University of Phoenix HIS/120 Christina Winn May 17, 2013 Immigration Experience Paper This is the beginning of what is bound to be an extensive journey. Between the poor state of the economy and the growing oppression of the Italian government I have had enough. There are rumors throughout the town about America, it sounds amazing. We are able to be free and make something of ourselves. This is the chance our family has been waiting for. They say that people in this land are able to not only be free but can choose a religion of their choice. The families in the area have been feuding of the Lutheran/catholic sides for too long. I want to move and be free to choose for myself. We are poor and have only the availability of steerage tickets. There were horrid rumors about these spots on the boat. They all ended up being true. We had no eating places, only salt water to wash and drink with. People were crammed into places that no human should have to live in. We were constantly worried about any of the sick on the boat and constantly saw death all around us. The trip felt like it would never end. I had the luxury of seeing the people above us in the other classes as I was boarding. They had enough room to fit five people in one part of their room. They had nice living and dining arrangements and we constantly pampered throughout the trip. We were left to fend for ourselves until the ship landed. The whole trip we had to entertain ourselves...

...This paper will address two examples for music, art, architecture, philosophy, and literature for the Enlightenment and Romantic periods. Each item will show the impact it had on the society today. ART Enlightenment Period Jean-Pierre Houel’s picture The Taking of the Bastille showed a great historic event. The painting showed the Bastille, which was symbolic of France’s royal authority figure, destroyed in the French Revolution. It conveyed the emotion and importance of that particular event. The painting, Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson, created by Jean-Marc Nattier was important piece of art. The painting was indicative of the Enlightenment school of thought because it showed a scholarly, well-dressed man reading a book. Romantic Age Joseph M Turner’s The Chancel and Crossing of Tintern abbey, looking toward the East Window was inspired to paint the Tintern Abbey after visiting the site. The abbey was popular to many Romantics. It inspired the famous poem Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tinten Abbey. The painting itself show the smallness of man, wilderness of nature, and unstoppable power that reclaimed The Tinten Abbey’s edifice. Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, by Caspar David Friedrich was a quintessential Romantic painting. It displayed infinite potential and possibility of man and the mysterious grandeur of nature. The painting also...
