English Vocabulary Analysis

Writing an essay is not as much about the end product as it is the journey to get there. You may possess the most expansive vocabulary, but the one variable that shows through your writing is time. Time is the one factor that shows improvement, effort, and persistence. Without time, the journey would not exist. Step one in the journey is throwing ideas on to paper. Throwing refers to the chaos of that first step. In my case, the throwing of ideas was evident in the lack of cohesion and argument. This action of throwing is only able to happen if the topic is of meaning to the writer. The topic I chose, the benefits of immersion programs to help learn a language, is something I am very passionate about. I've been lucky enough to experience it …show more content…
This seemed daunting at the time, however I knew it had to happen. Unlike my first attempt, I had wrote an outline on the back of my first draft. I kept in tact what I new to be true about essays, intro, support, conclusion, and created room for an argument and counterargument. In setting up this outline, with the guidance I received after meeting with my teacher, I was able to realize how to approach this a second time. To start, I removed my "argument" (In order to acquire a new language, one must be willing to experience a language and culture behind it). I replaced it with, "A less costly alternative to language immersion is necessary to provide students an opportunity to improve speaking a second language". At the time, this resolved the confusion by clearly stating what I was going to contrast while arguing the expense being a problem. At this stage, the structure had to change. I started by separating the two topics in the evidence section of my essay. In addition, I removed all evidence and paragraphs that showed the negative impact of just learning in school. I also tried to cut down on the usage of narratives that was prevalent in my first draft. I also deleted, "To conclude, the methods most conducive to learning a new language are those that mimic the process one would follow as if learning ho to speak from birth. It only makes sense that we find common ground between …show more content…
Unlike my first draft, I made clear that the alternative was immersion. I felt as if my essay was beginning to come together. I knew that there was still a long way to go, but when submitting this draft I felt as if I put in utmost

Etymological Analysis of Modern English Vocabulary

...1 ETYMOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF MODERN ENGLISH VOCABULARY The modern English vocabulary falls into two main sets: native words and borrowings. Native words belong to the original English word-stock and are known from the earliest Old English manuscripts. It is customary to subdivide native words into those of the Indo-European stock and those of the common Germanic origin. The former have cognates in the vocabularies of all or most Indo-European languages, whereas the latter have cognates only in Germanic languages, but not in Romance, Slavonic or other languages of the Indo-European family. Several linguists are inclined to the opinion that there exist specifically English words which have no cognates in other languages and constitute the English proper element of the vocabulary. The degree of assimilation depends upon the length of period during which the word has been used in the receiving language, upon its importance for communication purpose and its frequency. Oral borrowings due to personal contacts are assimilated more completely and more rapidly than literary borrowings, i.e. borrowings through written speech. Loan words according to the degree of assimilation fall into three groups: a) completely assimilated loan words, b) partially assimilated loan words, c) unassimilated loan words or barbarisms. The group of partially assimilated words may be subdivided depending on the aspect that remains unaltered, i.e. according to whether the word retains features of spelling, pronunciation...

Your Use of Language Sends Out Lots of Little Messages, Not Only Just About Your Level of Education and Where You Come from, but How You Would Like to Be Perceived.

...from, but how you would like to be perceived. The use of language one uses sends out messages of how the speaker wants to be perceived by others or to the speaker him/herself. People can rapidly change their language depending on situation and context, in the public eye one will choose their language to create an identity or sell a point of view toward how they would like to be perceived. Language can be a determiner of your level of education or a locational marker but these ‘common traits’ are usually quite generalized and will change depending whether an individual is trying to achieve an overt or covert prestige within a group or greater public. Many Australians who have come from overseas speak in an ethnolect; the variety of English these people speak that promotes maintaining or increasing social distance and stresses common bonds, experiences and knowledge between the speakers. It is a way for these migrants to keep their accent and embrace their culture because this is how they would like to be perceived by their cultural groups and how the migrant themself wants to be perceived. A good example of this is the ethnolect variety “wogspeak” (term coined by Jane Warren) which is spoken mainly by ethnic groups of Lebanese and European. Jane Warren states that “Language plays an essential role in the development and expression of such bicultural identities..”. What this is saying is these ethnic groups feel the need to express both their Australian identity but also their...

Teaching Vocabulary

...Chapter Two 8 Teaching Vocabulary 8 Textbook analysis……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….....................20 CONCLUSION ...22 INTRODUCTION It seems almost impossible to overstate the power of words; they literally have changed and will continue to change the course of world history. Perhaps the greatest tools we can give students for succeeding, not only in their education but more generally in life, is a large, rich vocabulary and the skills for using those words. Our ability to function in today’s complex social and economic world is mightily affected by our language skills and word knowledge. Words are the primary building blocks of effective communication. Although gestures and facial expressions work well in face-to-face communication, words carry the weight of meaning when people are removed from each other in distance and time. The linguist David Wilkins summed up the importance of vocabulary in this way:”Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”. His view is echoed from a course book (Dellar H and Hocking D, Innovations, LTP):”If you spend most of your time studying grammar, your English will not improve very much. You will see most improvement if you learn more words and expressions. You can say very little with grammar, but you can say almost anything with words!” The aim of the current term paper is to learn more about Vocabulary Teaching and to analyze...

Distinctive performance will be organised in particular Chinese festivals. After completion of the first phase, the Resort is expected to serve 12 million guests during the first six months. As expected, the guests will be local citizens and residents in the neighbouring provinces. Gradually, the Resort plans to attract customers from the entire nation, as well as tourists from countries in the vicinity, such as South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan. The management budgets at 40 million guests per year, until the completion of the second phase. The management anticipates a similar customer profile in the target market segment. That is, families with young children are the primary targets. Secondarily, the Resort aims at young couples, tourists, and youth...

Comparing Reading Programs

...African-American (AA) and English Language Learners (ELL) students are groups that traditionally suffer in standard reading and English classrooms. A 1965 Harlem study cited by William Labov (Labov, Can reading failure be reversed pg. 40, laay ) contrasts two groups of students: one group that is not affiliated with street culture and one group that is. The findings are startling. AA students that did not associate with “street” groups on average read two grade-levels below students. This figure is alarming but nonetheless, two grade-levels can be remediated with the right intervention. However, the group that associated with “street” groups persisted to stall at an average plateau of a 4.9 grade reading level. A plateau indicates a systemic failure to address the underlying issue of instruction. The times have changed but the fact that AA and ELL youth are not being served has remained constant. One would (like to) believe that non-responsive students are wholly neglected, however, often times it is not a negligence in intervention, but a lack of appropriate reading curriculum/tools that creates the dire situation that underperforming students are in. AA and ELL students pose an educational challenge because they already possess language structures that vary from standard academic English in grammar, phonics, and cultural experience. The Ann Arbor decision reaffirms that although different, African American Vernacular (AAVE), is not mangled or fragmented Standard Academic English (SAE). According...

Extensive Reading

...Making Use of English Subtitled K-Pop MV in Exploring Students’ Extensive Reading Comprehension YUNINGSIH Telkom University, Indonesia yuningsihlegiman@gmail.com ABSTRACT Studies on captions and subtitles in EFL learning gave positive effects on comprehension and vocabulary acquisition (Chung, 1996, Neurnan & Koskinen, 1992; Price, 1983; Vanderplank, 1988, 1993). Using song in ELT was highly impressive and motivating (Murphey, 1992; Lied, 2000). This study was designed to investigate the use of English-subtitled K-Pop MV in exploring students’ extensive reading ability. In this case study, five students, four girls and one boy, were selected. To collect the data, document analysis and an in-depth interview were conducted. The findings showed in comprehending the song, the students’ interpretations were still shallow and relying heavily on summary of narrative with very low-level inference. Meanwhile in vocabulary acquisition, it helped their better understanding wider range vocabulary, either in English or Korean. In addition, using K-Pop for learning English was more interesting and enjoyable, it is also motivating. Overall, using English-subtitle on K-Pop can be used as an alternative way to enliven extensive reading. Keywords: Subtitle, comprehension, extensive reading, interpretation, inference. INTRODUCTION The Korean wave—”hallyu” in Korean—refers to a surge in the international visibility of Korean culture, beginning in East Asia in the 1990s and continuing...

Vocabulary Development in Efl Learners

...Bibliography on Vocabulary Development in EFL Learners Supatranut Singhanuwananon 5506040111 Vocabulary Development in EFL Learners: Optimizing Lexical Competence Vocabulary teaching and learning in English language teaching (ELT) had been long considered unimportant until the light started to gleam gradually on the field in the 1980s to the 1990s (Nation, 2011; Henriksen, 1999). It has become widely known that slow vocabulary development blocks learners’ ability to comprehend L2 content through reading and listening (August, Carlo, Dressler, and Snow, 2005). Studies also show that because EFL learners have very much fewer productive vocabulary than receptive vocabulary, they often encounter difficulties in language production (Zhong, 2011). As an EFL learner myself, I have experienced such problems as well. Oftentimes, my vocabulary limitations interfere with my communication in L2. Therefore, it kindles my personal interest in studies of L2 vocabulary development. Because vocabulary has become one of the key elements in ELT and ELL, through decades, many research have been conducted to identify how vocabulary is learned and developed, and what factors that impede or boost learners’ lexical competence. Hence, this study attempts to respond to the research questions as follow: 1. What are existing vocabulary learning strategies that EFL learners use? 2. What are factors that affect vocabulary development in EFL learners? 3. What are effective vocabulary learning strategies...

Textbook Evaluation

...Introduction The learners and teachers of English and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) textbooks are three major inter-related elements in the process of present day education. Hutchinson, 1994 cited in (Evaluating an EFL textbook - A new English Course) states that, “The textbook is an almost universal element of ELT teaching”. Therefore, a textbook can be mentioned as a useful instrument which serves as a guide or an instructional manual for studying a particular subject. Against the common belief that students are the key in this direction, many scholars hold the view that textbooks are the heart of education with regard to the fact that both teachers and students are to a large extent dependent on the books (Sarem, S. N., Hamidi, H., Mahmoudie, R., 2013).Therefore, it is clear that a textbook facilitates the teaching and learning process and thus, is helpful both for the teacher and the students. Textbooks are compiled and developed because they are the most convenient means of providing the structure that the teaching-learning system requires. Textbooks are a good solution to overcome the weaknesses in teaching materials. Ansary and Babaii (2002) cited in (An Evaluation of English Language Textbook 'Say it in English' for first year intermediate Grade in South Arabia, 2012) state that, “Although the textbook is not the only tool for the teaching and learning process, it is still of a significant impact for achieving the language learning objectives...

The Importance Of Literacy In Learning

...Stephen Krashen, a greater competence in vocabulary and spelling carries out an easier comprehension of reading (S. Krashen 441). Secondly, S. H. Moghadama, Z. Zainalb and M. Ghaderpour refer to vocabulary as “one of the best predictors of reading ability” (Moghadama, Zainalb, and Ghaderpour 555). As it is explained at the beginning of this section, one of the aims of learning a new language is to understand what you listen or you read, hence, it is so important knowing as much vocabulary as it is possible. The less vocabulary you know, the more unintelligible results communication (D. August 50). According to the mentioned studies, vocabulary develops an essential function during the learning process not only in the semantic field but also in the grammar field (Alqahtani...
